More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

Now we know what he saw in the mirror. Great, now i can't wear all my Dumbledore's Army Clothing in public, now that DA literally means gay, I hope this at least doesn't come out in muggle tv news, i think it will tho.

Lisa, I have a simple solution- don't read these type of postings, and allow us who want to to read them. She's doing the majority a favor, sorry you're not in the majority, but she's just trying to please.

Posted by Kaleygurl Oct 20th 2007

I can't believe Dumbledore is gay...that's just kinda depressing for me...I'd always secretly hoped for dumbledore/mcgonagall... And the Neville/Hanah thing...it's cute, I suppose, but I'm HUGE on Neville/Luna...

Posted by Celestial_Melody Oct 20th 2007

I'm sorry, but I don't understand why Dumbledore's being gay would have anything to do with his relationship with Harry, OR his choice of clothing, OR his candy preference, OR anything else. Many of the comments on here have been downright rude and I realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but flaming a certain lifestyle is unacceptable. And I--like many others here--feel that Dumbledore's greatness is in no way affected by his sexual orientation. He's a person, and a great person. And THAT is what we HP fans need to concentrate on. Finally, to end my rant *grins* I would like to add my vote to the "finding out more about relationships after DH" group. =) I like knowing about characters' happy or unhappy endings and if that means finding out that Dumbledore was gay, hooray! More information for fanfiction, that's all I can think.

Posted by Nosferatu Oct 20th 2007

... Oh no... J.K. shouldn't have said that. Firstly because I look at Dumbledore in a totally other way and everytime I think of him, I see him playing around naked with other man. It's disturbing. And I know...prejudice bla bla. And secondly...what do you think those Jesus-Fanatics are going to say? 'now she's is supporting the gay - god hates f...' and rubbish just like this. And anyway - this is one thing I really, really never wanted to know. ...

Posted by irishfanaticwhobelievessnapeisgood Oct 20th 2007

flyboy 30 - i totally agree with you! I think some people are going OTT about this cos lets face it, its the first big piece of news weve got in a long while in relation to the series. Dumbledore was gay, so what? He's still the legend he always was!!!!!

Posted by kooldude10694 Oct 20th 2007

I guess I accept it now! This is still the thing in the world that I least expected to happen, but Dumbledore's still the same, but this is information about a subject we never really saw happening in the books. If J.K. announced like Ron was gay, then I'd be freaking out. But I was freaking out about this too! At least he's not a pedophile! But I bet this was shocking for like everyone in the world! Talk about controversy! As much as I love J.K. and her work, it kinda seems like she was just saying this to bring attention, as TheQuiet said, to the books after the release of DH. But I know she wasn't. I'm still completely shocked, but I guess I am okay with it now. About Hannah and Neville, good, but i preffered Neville and Luna, becuase they were both different, in a good way. I'm glad that J.K. showed that Aunt Petunia really does love Harry and wants him to succeed. Good for her!

NARROWMINDED PEOPLE!!!!! GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND GET BACK INTO THE REAL WORLD! MAKING DUMBLEDORE GAY MADE THE BOOKS ALL THE MORE REAL FOR ME! AND IT HAS ABSOLUTLY NO PROBLEMS, NOW IN STEAD OF INSULTING JUST DUMBLEDORE [may you rest in peace] BUT YOUR INSULTING THE ENTIRE GAY COMUNITY! So if you are gay and feel offened about this please accept my appology on these "so called Harry Potter Fans." And thanks to anyone and everyone who is backing me up.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

okay, hold it. We "Jesus Fanatics" are right here. I didn't say anything about God hating fags. On stupid guy parades his family around a funeral and suddenly we are all like that to you?? Maybe prejudice goes both ways, eh?

Posted by chommy Oct 20th 2007

Great. Now my brothers and friends are making fun of me for liking a gay book. Now they're calling ME gay. =( This one news has ruined me.

Posted by Ditzy78 Oct 20th 2007

I feel that I was perhaps the only person pleased by this news. In my opion these books have always been about tolerance and that there had been no gay characters had always disappointed me. While her showing Dudley to be a homophobe in book five had made me realise that she herself was not homophobic. On this I felt she had not done enough. She has now made me feel truly comfortable with the books. I am really sad about how a lot of you seem to have taken this, I don't get how someone who has claimed to love these books and it's message of tolerance could be so intolerant now.

Posted by padfoot_prongs Oct 20th 2007

chommy what do you feel? is there anything about gay ppl in the book, trust me dont let them get to you ok?

Posted by TheTrio2AreHPGeeks Oct 20th 2007

I read the "Dumbledore Is Gay" thing on Yahoo!...I didn't believe it at first...I thought it was a rumour...but since MuggleNet posted it...I guess it's not a rumour...it is like Dumbledore to be open-minded, but if he wasn't straight, I think he'd be bi. But even though he's gay, I still respect Dumbledore. But still...it's such a shock...And NEVILLE MARRYING HANNAH ABBOTT?! WHAT THE BLOODY HECK IS UP WITH THAT?!?! I'm still a Neville/Luna shipper...grrrrrrr....

Posted by Dobbysgirl13 Oct 20th 2007

I am still shocked... I mean... DUMBLEODRE... Ya I thoguht Doge was strange but now that I thin k about it, ya, he is like totally gay.... but Dumbledore............... ............. that's just.. I wish i could have seen the directors face when he saw that note!!

Posted by arry6 Oct 20th 2007

Hey Harry8voldemort what are to 5 im shocked you know what who cares its not like she said he was a cerial killer!!!!!

Posted by Dumbledorelives Oct 20th 2007

I used "lifestyle" simply because I lacked a better term. I agree with lisamz. Jo is an amazing author. Her books are fantastic. However, my love for J.K Rowling has slowly declined, starting with her use of the word "girl" at the end of Deathly Hallows. That was pointless. It established no realism to the world, because not everyone uses profanity, and I can't picture Molly using it, of all people. What kind of example is that setting for children. The rest of the book wasn't clean of profanity either. Then, we get all of this other information that is not, like Tolkien's backstory, adding anything important to the world. It is giving the books more attention, and bringing up controversial matters that don't need to be argued about.

Posted by Tinkerbell0578 Oct 20th 2007

WHATTTT?

Posted by erolos Oct 20th 2007

Aww :( I was quite intrigued when I heard this, but some of the comments on here are a little depressing. Just to point out, I was a kid when I was reading these books, and I was also gay. Being a child doesn't make those issues irrelevant, and as others have said, heterosexuality has been widely portrayed in the books, so I don't understand people's assertions that the revelation is superfluous or "too much". Also, JK was answering a question here, she didn't just decide to out Dumbledore for her own amusement. I'd always been rather tickled by how reasonable and accepting Harry Potter fandom was, so it's odd that so many are uncomfortable with this. And I think it fits the character perfectly - his love life obviously became closed off to him after his heart was broken by Grindelwald, so he was the aesexual father-figure even more so. Anyway, I suppose a lot of the comments here have been positive, or perhaps more importantly, simply unconcerned. =)

Posted by Daniel_Radcliffe_Is_My_Husband Oct 20th 2007

Dumbledore is gay. Jo is God. BELIEVE IT!

Posted by chommy Oct 20th 2007

As I said before, I am kind of not happy with this news. This has totally changed how I see Dumbledore and, as other people said, I think JK has given us more information then we intended to get. If she kept this to herself, she wouldn't have lost so much fans. Now me, who is considered the biggest HP fan in my school, am not even sure if I like the series now.

Posted by dobby101 Oct 20th 2007

Laury Mallory'sroblem isn't with gay people, it's w/ witchcraft. She won't care about this.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

oh i still like the series. I'm not sure about the last one, I haven't read it yet, but I'm not denouncing the books.

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers Oct 20th 2007

Dumbledore is GAY???? Thats dumb. I am gonna start a website called "dumbledoreisnotgay.com"! Wow, I have no idea why she would do that!!

Posted by krazipinkmonkiz Oct 20th 2007

I always thought Neville would have ended up with Luna, what ever happened with her anyway?

Posted by istolethehorcrux Oct 20th 2007

This actually doesn't surprise me... I think it has something to do with the fact that Dumbledore in my head, always looked INCREDIBLY like an older Leonardo da Vinci, who was also gay, and actually shares MANY things in common with Dumbledore as it is... but interesting, nevertheless!

Posted by guitarrebelgrl Oct 20th 2007

Two words: purple robes. No but really, it's cool. I'd accept dumbledore anyway he was.

Posted by Daniel_Radcliffe_Is_My_Husband Oct 20th 2007

HarryPotterFreakers: Go ahead. Start that website. I'm sure it'll be successful. Though I'm 75% sure JKR will force it to be shut down, just like DUMBLEDOREISNOTDEAD.COM. And what you're saying is rude.

Posted by Quantummilkshake Oct 20th 2007

Wow, I never realilzed how many homophobics there are.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

i wonder how the other characters would react to this.

Posted by MissPadfootThePirate Oct 20th 2007

Awwwe. Dumbledore and Grindelwald is tragically adorable. =) Hmm. I wonder if Grindelwald was gay then too...haha. But I defintely cracked up when I first saw that. Hahaha. How amusing. =) Now I'll scream DUMBLEWALD! instead of DUMBLEDORE! out my car window at people. Haha.

Posted by Gryffindor_Rawr Oct 20th 2007

I'm shocked about Dumbledore. But I can't understand how people can just stop liking the series because he's gay! Surly this shows that it doesnt matter about your sexuality, you can be a great person no matter who you are?! Come on people - this doesnt change anything about the series!

Posted by hissing_riddle Oct 20th 2007

Well, wicked87, I honestly didn't see it coming is all. I guess JKR's just saying that she visualized Dumbledore as a homosexual and is only sharing her idea; she has not said that others have to share, so I think we can just come to our own conclusions about this wonderful character. :) I'm actually more worried about how this would affect others. (like I said, Mallory. ): )

Posted by harrypotterfan4ever Oct 20th 2007

shocked.................. .... I can't believe this. totally changes how I see dumbledore. I'm still in shock

Posted by redfreckles Oct 20th 2007

Well of course! that make absolutely no sense. Dumbledore gay!! ugh. why does everything have to be gay? it's turning into a big fad. it's ridiculous. before you hate on me- I have nothing against gays I'm in theatre I hang out with gay guys all the time. it just becomes extremely frustrating when you realize there are no free straight men out in the world. I'm just annoyed. grrr.

Posted by Goldernie Oct 20th 2007

I think shes loosing it a bit, or just doing it for the attention and controversy, to sell more books, also the way she killed all those people in the last book, just like that, with no story, i mean non-important characters can die like that, but not main chars like the twins. I thought about Dumbledore as never married because he's just too much of a geek to get a girl, he was sort of a hero, a rol-model, some one that didn't care about being exentric, dressing funny or what people say, i used to think that this was because of his superior intelligence, but, if he's gay Of course he doesn't care about people calling him gay! Why she had to ruin the most powerful character i bet she was thinking of da-vinci or somthin, i mean, lockhart gay? ok the twins gay? ok neville, snape, hagrid, percy, etc etc.. any of those would have been ok, but Dumbly, the one voldemort always feared etc etc.. i think of being brave, courageous, heroic, a guide for hp, a fathery figure for hp, a mentor, now hes just gay. Sorry to everybody, i though i wasnt homophobic, there are gay people in my family and all, i even like slash but this was just too much for me.

Posted by Dumbledorelives Oct 20th 2007

This doesn't change my enjoyment of the series. I'll still read the books over and over. It just causes me to take a second glance at the author. I don't know what I think now, because I know what J.K.R was trying to do, but I don't agree with it. Padfoot_prongs does bring up a good point in the part of his message that is not all caps (what's up with that?) He/She says "rest in peace" to Dumbledore. .......... He's not real. He can't "rest in peace", because he never died, because he never lived to start with. So he never existed to be gay. The only reason that this news should effect anyone is because it will change how some people (myself included) view Dumbledore when they read about him. He's still a fictional character, and isn't gay, or straight. He's words on a page, and a picture in people's imaginations. This doesn't make any statement for gays, or for straight people. If a real person who had influence on the population had said that they were gay, then that may be a big step for gays.

Posted by LovinLuna88 Oct 20th 2007

Wow, I never saw the Dumbledore thing coming, but good for him. Nothing can change my respect for him, I'm just glad that he had a chance to love somebody like that once. I am more surprised about Hannah and Neville, but I think that they are pretty well suited.

Posted by Kerri_S Oct 20th 2007

Dumbledore being gay doesn't bother me but I'd rather that he'd been attracted to/involved with a character on the good side and *not* Grindlewald :( I also have to say I don't think this quite feels right in terms of character, although this is JK's story and not anyone else's. It seems like the evidence from the books was far, far better for Lupin, Sirus, or Lupin/Sirius.

Posted by hissing_riddle Oct 20th 2007

Oh! And Grindelwald didn't die in 1945... Didn't he die in 1997...? Correct me if I'm wrong. And I almost forgot to comment on Neville and Hannah! ): Aw, I was hoping a bit for Neville and Luna...

Posted by Daniel_Radcliffe_Is_My_Husband Oct 20th 2007

DH REWRITING TIME!!! "Of course this is all in your head, Harry, but who can say it's not real?" said Dumbledore as the mist grew thicker. As Harry slowly faded back to the real world, Dumbledore called back to him. "One more thing, Harry. I was gay with Gellert Grindelwald." LATER DURING THE EPILOGUE..... The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well, except for the fact that Harry had named his middle child after a gay wizard. THE END

Posted by RosenGhost Oct 20th 2007

Being gay is not a bad thing. Lots of my friends are gay, I don't discriminate them. I also think that saying "That's so gay" is very rude.

Posted by animal_lover Oct 20th 2007

I kind of like the fact that Dumbledore is gay. I mean, there's no one else in the books who is, and this is kind of making the Harry Potter world seem more real... and it was kind of nice of JK Rowling to acknowledge gay people... I don't know how gay people are feeling when they read the dumbledore news, but I'm just guessing that they are happy about it. Anyways, if anyone were gay in the books I would say Dumbledore even if I hadn't heard this news... Grindledore lol

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

Okay, so the basic comments of this group are: #1: GAY!? EW! #2: HATER!! #1: AM NOT! #2: R 2!! #3: What about Luna, Neville?

Posted by ILuvHP4Ev3rr Oct 20th 2007

LOL! oh my gosh!! thats like, UNREAL!! i mean, i sometimes thought it, but i thought that was my fanfic brain speaking!! LOL WOW! and neville and hannah? hmm..well this was all slightly random

Posted by lisamz Oct 20th 2007

I love the books as much as any HP fan. I'm just really irritated that Rowling is conducting herself in this way. It's unbecoming to an author. I don't think great authors usually do what she's doing -- and by that I mean continuing to add details (trivial ones at that!) to finished works while on publicity whirlwinds. This is purely a matter of taste -- I come from a point of view that says 1) when a work is published, it's "done" and 2) once it's done, what the author thinks or knows doesn't matter anymore; the audience has to work with the details it has been given to find meaning. Jeez, did Melville go around on a reading tour explaining Ahab's psychology or whether Ishmael found himself a girlfriend? (Not that I think the HP series is in the same league as Moby Dick.)

Posted by Rowena_R Oct 20th 2007

Whaa....? ummmm....? If this was april fools day I'd be rofling but... It's... not... ppplllleeeeeeee aaaase pllleeeeeaaaseee no fanfictions!!!!

Posted by rob1007 Oct 20th 2007

uh wow dumbledore gay... odd but neville married hannah!

Posted by Dobbysgirl13 Oct 20th 2007

Man I can't wait for the next blicle on PiclePack!!!

Posted by jbloom09 Oct 20th 2007

Dang boo!!

Posted by Lilyputton Oct 20th 2007

OMG... No way. I totally didn't see this coming. In a way I can see this making sense, but it also changes the whole aspect of everything. Dumbledore is in a whole new light *shudders* As far and Neville/Hannah= awwwwwwwwww! So cute! Im glad Neville found love! And the Petunia thing, I kinda thought that was what it was all along.
