More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."
Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.
Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."
Stay tuned, more to come soon!
EDIT: Click HERE to see MuggleNet's Emerson Spartz discuss the news on At Large with Geraldo Rivera... and subsequently get parodied on Jimmy Kimmel.

GO DUMBLEDORE!!
intersting. know that i think about it, though, i never have thought of who dumbledore had loved previously. im a little schocked-but i still
i instantly love jk AND dumbledore infinitly more than ever before. with so many close-minded jerks in the world being homophobes, i love that jk decided to make such a beloved character gay. it teaches that it's not a big deal. and to anyone on here that is being anti-gay dumbedore and homophobic, suck it up. this is the 2000s and you can't keep thinking like that. its just wrong.
After reading the news i was ready to burn all my hp books, luckily i came here and began reading all of your comments, im begining to accept the whole Dumbly-as-da-vinci thing, (thank you for this amazing site that let us talk things trough with other muggles of the world ;) But i still think She should have said he was bi so we could think that he was simply "above" ordinary conventions like he was above so many other things, may be he was (above not bi), but he is considered gay becouse his last great love was a guy.
lisamz 2... She's on a book tour. That's what you do on booktours when you get asked questions, or more details are wanted. So she wasn't in the wrong at all. She's on a book tour. And personally, I'd still like to know more. Where's luna now? For example. So really. Get over Dumbledore being gay. It changes nothing about him or the series or anything. It's pretty cute actually.
Aw taht explains everything now... and i was so into the mcgonagal/dumby thing to!! oh well... the depressing thing now is that when i go to school everyones gonna say wow remi see another reason why harry potters gay... i must go think of comebacks!! Well yes i agree with Goldernie people should also just get over it! I bet now people are gonna start to hate Dumbledore cause he was gay... so how is everyone? Any cheesecakians??
"Rowena_R Whaa....? ummmm....? If this was april fools day I'd be rofling but... It's... not... ppplllleeeeeeee aaaase pllleeeeeaaaseee no fanfictions!!!!" I gotta agree, no fanfictions, please!
Okay, wait. She shouldn't have said that he was bi, because he wasn't. He was GAY. There is a difference. (Guys, the ignorance is beginning to kill me.) And, as stated above, GO DUMBLEDORE!!
DH REWRITING TIME!!! "Of course this is all in your head, Harry, but who can say it's not real?" said Dumbledore as the mist grew thicker. As Harry slowly faded back to the real world, Dumbledore called back to him. "One more thing, Harry. I was gay with Gellert Grindelwald." LATER DURING THE EPILOGUE..... The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well, except for the fact that Harry had named his middle child after a gay wizard. THE END
Ummmmmm. Okay. Did she specifically say the word "gay" cause I really don't know about this. Kind of ?:{?
Guitar person, you completely missed the point. It's about narrative integrity. And by the way, these are fictional characters so Luna isn't ANYWHERE now -- she's a character in a book.
I thought that there was a mcgonagal/dumbledore thing when I first started reading the books, but it didn't last long. I always just thought Dumbledore never fell in love. I don't think it matters that he's gay. And last night when she announced it? Everyone was cheering and clapping. I didn't see anyone who seemed mad about it. There may have been a few people. But the majority seemed happy about it. It probably got the loudest applause of all the questions asked.
it all comes down to : in order to truly have a tolerant society. We need to stop this obsession of telling or showing or sharing that someone whom was well respected for a particular thing/act/ability/...... was white/Christian/black/div orced/abused/rich/poor/st raight/liked country music and rap/ or was gay. Why do we continue to need to justify how someone was that had zero impact on how great they were. we need to get over this need to tie ourselves closer (via similarities) to people of greatness/famous/powerful /popular. That is the only real reason this is important to anyone. Those who like gays are all for it, and conversely those who dislike guys are not. And those who can look past it will always love the Albus we new in the book. I guarantee if we met 17 yr old Albus we most likely would not have liked him. it took the death of his sister and hatred of his brother to change him and get him on the path to be Headmaster! Just get over it and stop looking for useless connections. Why should we care..... if jesus is black or white. Lestat was gay too.
OMG! yes, i was there and i did not believe it at all!!! even though it came from her mouth!!
Can the book just end when its published. If she wanted to say this write another book. Or include it earlier. Something. Not this.
I STILL LOVE HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Simply amazing dr is my hubby!! how have you been?
I signed off last night to get some sleep, but I've gone back to read the posts in the 150's and 200's written by younger, more energetic people. DannyRob and Tony were using the Bible, and religion, respectively, to excuse homophobic beliefs and in DannyRob's case, claim that gays choose to be gay. It is not acceptable to use religion as a skirt to hide behind. Religion does not close the door to any debate! It's used as an excuse for various and contradictory things, and must be examined just as any other part of an argument. Mother Theresa claimed religion had her do good works; some members of al Qaida/Taliban claimed religion excused mass murder; Maria Trapp (Sound of Music) kept going after adversity because of her faith; Hitler murdered Jews citing his religion (yes, he was Christian). If you use "I believe gays are sinful because of (my religion-my Bible-my caste--my whatever)", you need to accept that you've brought your religion into the questioning mode. Catie--nice work showing your knowledge of Deuteronomy, etc. It was fair to tell DannyRob15 that if he expects people to abide by one thing in the Old Testament, it's all game.
Yes, 593hp, she said gay. She said, "I always thought of Dumbledore as gay." And then everyone started clapping and cheering. I don't think this really would have fit in into any of the books. It would have taken away from Harry's story. Maybe it would have fit into the last one, but obviously JKR didn't want it in there. I love how she's answering all these questions.
wowwww...i can honestly say i did not see tht coming..i cant really picture him being gay..
pjholland: agreed, him being gay does not diminish his greatness. if anything, he taught love and tolerance above hate and prejudice. That's the most important message in the book... yet some 'fans' here seem to have missed that message completely! And I can't help wonder how difficult it must've been to be gay in the 1860s!
...What's Laura Mallory going to say if she gets her paws on this information?XD Looks like Evanna's ship doesn't work out after all.):
I'm impressed with the stupidity displayed here. If you read the entire series, liked Dumbledore as a character, and suddenly think that there's something wrong with him, you missed the darn point. JKR mentioned that he was gay simply as a response to a question, she didn't make a big deal out of it. That's what's so wonderful about this, it shows that gay people (real or fictional) are normal people, they can do great things, and you shouldn't be changing your opinion of them after you learn of their sexuality.
Here are some ideas outside of the gay debate. Book 7 made it seem like as a teen Dumbledore shared some of Grindelwald's bad ideas, had reservations about others but accepted all of them anyway, unrealistically hoping for the best. That's precisely how many people newly in love act--they go along with things they shouldn't because they're blind. And they sometimes resent anything that takes time away from their love (like caring for Dumbledore's sister). I should have seen that D&G were in love! It also partly explains Dumbledore's delay in defeating Grindelwald. JKR is definitely a student of human nature. They say the quiet ones are--they're always listening and taking things in. (And in JKR's case, always reading.) When the HP series became popular, JKR seemed uncomfortable with publicity and crowds. I'm happy for us all that she's grown more accustomed to the limelight, even enjoying some banter with the audience!
Regardless of whether or not your agree with homosexuality or not. I ask all of you to please be respectful of your comments. As a gay individual, I am shocked and saddened by many of the comments I am seeing in response to this article. I am sure I am not the only gay person reading this either. We have to live with so much hatred in this world, it is hard to see it on a website that I support and love. Moderators, please help!
yeah viaaurelia! i can't picture that going to well in the late 1800s oh well im already getting people calling me saying wow remi see everyone in harry potter is gay! erg..those darn people who are misunderstood about harry potter...well yeah... so how is everyone?
HI REMI!! i was up last night talking with ppl..where was everyone?? how are you??
OMG!!! well now the bible lovers will b more pissed than ever and find more reasons to hate HP and ppl will take something dif of harry's relation to dumbledore i dont think dats fair and umm...well he's always been kinda unusual but i never wouldve thought this........ kinda shocked..... and well i feel this info is unneccessary....
Sonja, Dumbledore said the reason he delayed the deul with Grindelwald was because he was afraid that Grindelwald was more powerful than himself. Also, friends tend to overlook the flaws of their friends; you don't have to be in love to do that. Although JKR did say that Dumbledore liked Grindelwald, she didn't say that the feeling was mutual. I stand firm that JKR made it up after all the books were published; if she were trying to make a point about accepting gays, she would've put it in the books.
Hey honeydukes!! i was actually sickish i fell asleep at like 7:15 and i woke up this morning at 10ish...so im a little sick.. but i wouldve been at Carnige hall is i didnt have a math test and an italian test to do cause my dad wokrs a few blocks away in the city and well.. I MISSED THIS!! god... and now people (who misunderstand harry potter and who used to be my friends) are randomnly IMing me saying ha see there all gay and im like go go away its just dumbledore and i support dumbledore! yeah but now this whole thing is making me think do you think a bit deeper... you think dumbledore liked harry... actually no my friend is asking this question... erg now the thought is in my brain!! erg darn people!!
wondermus22: I agree with you. It's outrageous that these kinds of prejudice and hate against homosexuality still exist in 2007! And worse yet, in so called 'civilized' parts of the world! It's crazy that such medieval attitudes wormed their way into the 21st century! I therefore would like to call for tolerance and understanding, and I applaud all the gays of mugglenet who've stood up for their sexuality on this website!
I'm sorry, but i have trouble accepting that. No offense to anyone. I just have a heard time imagining him being gay. I'm going to stick to my old views. Ignorant, yes.
I was so happy about hearing Jo say Dumbledore is gay until I read all the comments here. The one that saddened me the most wasn't one that said homosexuality is wrong, it said something to the effect of "I don't want to believe Dumbledore was gay because he is strong and courageous so he couldn't be gay." That says more about how many people see homosexuality than the comments that its a sin or that it is disgusting. How sad.
Yes i agree with you all but now ive got to go!!
wow... I still need a bit of time for the Dumbledore tidbit to sink in... I never thought to even consider that possibility! but now that I have, there are instances in the books/#7 that make a little more sense. YAY DUMBLEDORE!!!
Albus Dumbledore is dead to me
Thanks viaaurelia1310. That means a lot! :)
Aberforth118, Dumbledore was killed at the end of book 6, so...
Quiscalus--you have a point about the 'more powerful'. If Grindelwald did not return Dumbledore's love, Dumbledore may have been even more vulnerable--it could be part of the power differential that Dumbledore might hesitate while dueling Grindelwald, and that it would take him time to work up the power and courage to do so. What is the greatest magic/power of all? Love. But love has the power to weaken us as well as strengthen us, and I believe that for a while it did just that to Dumbledore. Supporting Grindelwald's ideas, and then realizing what awful things he himself had done weakened Dumbledore.
Does it really matter what comes out about a character now? Obviously the books are awesome or you wouldn't have read them. Jo doesn't need to say anything for publicity. She never has before, and there obviously is no reason to now when she's worth 1 billion dollars. She has the HP world done in her head, and is giving out info when people ASK for it...this info wasn't randomly given out. Someone asked a question and she answered (like most normal people). So please go CHILL out. Dumbledore's gay, so deal. He's still an amazing character.
okay there aberforth... i hate that dumbledore part!!!!!!!!!!!! F*CKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! i love the petunia aprt and neville was okay...
I'm a tad shocked. This puts McGonagall/Dumbledore shippers out...
I screamed. My childhood was killed. Dumbledore is NOT supposed to have any sexuallity! He's a saint! He's a solitary saint! I don't believe it. Done. The End. I will refuse for the rest of my life.
wow...that's just....wow. *breathes* didn't see that one coming lol and neville and hannah? cute!!
I applaud your comment Wondermus22 and agree that it is hard to read such confusion in the comments. I think that D being gay is only natural. I mean, in the whole series, not one person was depicted as having a same-sex sexual orientation. How weird was that? I mean in all of Hogwarts, not one? If we believe that this world is "real" and one of our neighbors might be a "wizard" then it is only natural that the cross-section of wizards would represent our culture... there would be all kinds of peeps with many varied sexual orientations. However, Ab was charged for having sex with goats (if i caught the underline meaning of the charges he was found guilty for) but NO ONE freaked out!! I mean, i find having sex with animals more disturbing than sharing a connection with another human being. So, Dumbledore being gay? Yay!!
I knew it. The whole Grindlewald thing seemed fishy to me. Hope Dumbledore doesn't feel that wy twords anyone else!... I think the Neville/Hannah thing is so sweet. I also think it's a good thing Jo didn't bring this Dumdledore thing up in the books, though, It seems to be better answered just as a question. It will never change how I feel about Dumbledore, but it will be hard not to think about it when I'm reading the books! I love you Dumbledore, forever.
hey all, I think that dumb. has the right to be gay if jk wants him to...
I'm back! :D Soooo....wanna see my livejournal? There's new stuff, including the Swedish DH cover! deathlyh7212007 dot livejournal dot com
