These kiinds of things should be included IN the book, not AFTER the release of the book. What a waste, and there is very vague evidence in the books of Albus's orientation at best. IT just shows that the author didn't do very good job of conveying whatever it is she wanted...

The comments on here are interesting but what surprises and truly delights me is number of young people (I assume most are) for whom this revelation was either not a shock or was simply accepted as interesting. I fully expected (and got) the childish and frankly nonsensical "ZOMG I like loved the series but now I like don't and like I was the biggest fan in my school and now I like hate JK and her faggy books" - these responses need to be taken from whence they come – ignorant, immature people of whatever age who have no real understanding of life's many facets. If your love / affection for another person happens to fit society and religion's constraints then bully for you but please don't project your lack of understanding onto those who, through no choice of their own, have experiences and feelings outside the average. JK is a secular saint, a modern day heroine who has done more to promote love, tolerance and diversity than dozens of her peers put together. She has also single handedly in one fell swoop strengthened gay rights around the world - after all who doesn't love Dumbledore. Her method was genius - I was admittedly disappointed that there were (apparently) no gay characters in her books but there was equally no animosity towards them. Everyone read and loved the books - then (innocently?) she lets it drop that arguably the most important and loved character apart from Harry was gay - amazing and so very encouraging. From the bottom of my heart JK, thank you. You have no idea how much it means to those of us who for too long have been living on the periphery of life. For a generation of children it means thinking about and approaching homosexual people in a different light because now every Harry Potter fan knows someone gay.

Someone asked if he ever found true love and Jo said 'Dumbledore's gay,' as a response and then said 'His true love was Grindelwald." Wow, I really don't believe all the anti comments. The real point is young Dumbledore loved and lost but ended up wiser and stronger for it. It was through this that he became the Dumbledore we have as a character in the books.

I just read the article about Dumbledore. Not surprising news. The way he was with Gellert. He was smitten by him; though it was very one-sided. How strange though that just this morning I was thinking about the teachers at Hogwarts; if they are married, or dating or whatever. Cool about Neville and Hannah, but what about Luna? I really loved her. My heart just went out to her. My eyes filled with tears when Harry, in book seven, went up to her room and saw how she painted their portraits and the words "friends" so many times. She's my kind-a girl, Luna.

Dumbledore being gay should not affect how people think about his character. When people thought he was straight, his supposed heterosexuality didn't define him. Now that we know he's gay, his homosexuality shouldn't either. Also, chommy, I thinkthat saying she has lost millions of fans is a bit of an overstatement. I would be extremely disappointed in the HP fandom if, even after reading these books promoting tolerance and diversity, that there are still that many bigots among us to write off the series based on her comment.

What surprises me is not that Dumbledore is gay (I had suspected this), but that his crush was Grindelwald. From the moment I read Elphias's memoriam, I had that it was he who Dumbledore liked. In any case, this revelation totally redeems Jo in my eyes for suing that Indian community; acceptance of homosexuals is, I think, one of the more important social issues we face today, and I'm thrilled that Jo has chosen Dumbledore, one of my favorite literary characters, to speak in defense of homosexuals and dispel many of the stereotypes surrounding them.

Wow, I can just read the fanfiction now. x__x When I saw the AOL headline about JK revealing which HP character is gay, I was like, O.O OMG. Not because I have anything at all against it, but just because I was surprised she'd actually have a gay character and say that. And then when I saw it was Dumbledore---well, I am surprised but on the other hand it makes sense and it's not a big deal at all. I'm 100% cool with it. But still, wow, after all these years we learn that there WAS a gay character. xD It's realistic, really. Also...YAY I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT PETUNIA WAS GONNA SAY!!! I knew it'd be SOMEthing like that. I read this in the other article last night and was gleefully shocked, but I was so tired at the time that when I woke up this morning I thought I'd imagined it. I'm really impressed at JKR's courage-- she's putting herself and her legacy out there. But she wants to see what happens: How the fans react to this will be a real test of whether her books have encouraged people to be accepting. I have to agree, I always imagined Dumbledore as just asexual. But I still prefer JKR's version over all the Dumbledore/Minerva speculation... now THAT would be weird. I love how she's still giving us stuff to get emotional over even after the last book's release. And oh, I can't WAIT to see whether Laura Mallory just EXPLODES...
