More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

very true Quiscalus! I cant argue with that point! What ticks me off, is when they think it ruins dumbledore and the series....etc. Also, I like to debate. you cant deprive me of that!

Posted by JulietsCry23 Oct 20th 2007

I kinda had a feeling he was gay when he was rockin a purple velvet suit in one of the pensieve scenes...

Posted by harry8voldemort Oct 20th 2007

mmmmmmmmmmmm dark lord gay with old friend who would voldemort be gay with then? lucius? snape? any death eater?

Posted by toonidle Oct 20th 2007

Posted by augustbaby823 Oct 20th 2007

i was there and it was awesome!!! jo was sooooper nice!!

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

For those who say that this has "ruined" their opinions of the book, I could say that your comments have "ruined" my opinions of Mugglenet. Same reasoning right?

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 20th 2007

Hello all Im April and Im shocked.... Not that the series is ruined or anything like that but its still a shock:(

Posted by Kadaj Oct 20th 2007

The lamest thing is for someone to live 100 plus years without moving on with their life meeting other people due to unrequited love in their youth. Get on with your life man. And to think I thought Snape's obsession with Liliy was bad enough.

Posted by ohhthecheat Oct 20th 2007

Wow. I thought that we were all fans because of the complexity of Jo's characters. She has approached racism, sexism, ageism and many other social issues in her books. The series is wonderful because although it is a fantasy, it reflects real-world issues. Why would homosexuality not be included? Whether or not you feel homosexuality is "right" or "wrong," you must acknowledge that it exists in today and has for thousands of years. Furthermore, it has come to be more accepted today than ever, especially in Western Culture. If you're afraid of exposing kids to homosexuality, then you may as well put them under a box for their adolescent lives. Jo isn't writing about explicit sexuality acts. Homosexuality is a kind of love. Suddenly fans are in an uproar because Jo has included a real-world topic that many are uncomfortable with? What does this say about readers? They are able to deal with all types of fictional bigotry, but are unable to respect a character as a mentor, a teacher and a role model because of his sexual preference that was SO HIDDEN THROUGHOUT THE SERIES THAT MANY READERS WERE PREVIOUSLY UNAWARE? To all those who are now condemning the series and suggesting hiding it from children because of a homosexual protagonist, I suggest you reexamine your beliefs and open your eyes to the way the world is developing. Whether you love a man or a woman has no bearing on your goodness as a person. If the series is ruined for you now, good. These books are too good for a closed mind.

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

"Even if you're misguided enough to think that homosexuality is morally wrong..." Ummmm, people have different moral standards. Just because you believe that something, doesn't mean what everybody else believes is incorrect. Sometimes, people try so hard to be open-minded that they've become narrow-minded because they are *SO SURE* that their mind is open, and the way everybody else thinks is incorrect and narrow-minded. My statement may sound bizzare at first reading, but contemplate it. It makes sense.

Posted by MsSiriusBlack Oct 20th 2007

I hope JK reads these comments because there are just as many for her statement as against it , if not more. I hope she will retract what she has said to damage this character, but if not, it was her decision to make, I just thought she would care more about the series overall.

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

nice ohthechest. totally agree...*pokes other posts*

Posted by theboywholived_alexm Oct 20th 2007

Oh my lordy!!! I would have never guessed really. Now i can never look at Dumbledore the same way. I don't know if i like the idea of him being gay. It just doesn't suit him

Posted by Heiress_of_Insanity Oct 20th 2007

BTW, anyone who says Harry Potter should be taken off the shelves JUST because a character is gay, well buzz off! You have no right whatsoever to say JK Rowling should never again write a book just because she made a character gay. So? My brother is seven and he knows what homosexuality is! No child is 'too young' to find out about that. While they may not understand the concept, it's just like telling them they're adopted at the age of 2. My uncle is gay, and his partner is one of the nicest men I've ever met. If you don't support gay people, your problem. Dumbledore is dead. He can't go on 'I support the gays' walks anymore, OK? Harry could be gay and I wouldn't care. If he got together with Oliver Wood, or Neville, I'd be happy for him. Debunking a book just because a character is gay is a sign of immaturity, or faithlessness.

hi april! Guess wha? My doggie had puppies! : )

Posted by Daniel_Radcliffe_Is_My_Husband Oct 20th 2007

I love Jo. She is the best!

Posted by snuka Oct 20th 2007

What does it matter in a fictional character ? Sadly this will give more ammo to the "witchraft!" folks who already want to band HP books.

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 20th 2007

Really? How many, are they cute? Btw, Im scared of dogs, but puppies are good:)

Posted by wobby Oct 20th 2007

"Just think of the fan fic?" She's kidding, right? Where has she been? There have been slashfics about Grindy/Dumby since the day after DH came out. There've been Snapledore and even DD/Harry slashfics since...well, since FOREVER. Does she really think she's opening up some whole new world of fanfic potential here??

Posted by Kadaj Oct 20th 2007

I hope the Lord of The Rings Community will be willing to adopt me.

Posted by tiassa Oct 20th 2007

i actually had a passing thought during DH that he might be gay so im kind of proud of myself and happy that jk said that. I dont think this is out of the blue or that she just made this up. with all the prejudices that the books deals with i kind of wondered if that issue will ever come up. there are a lot of things that jk knew about her characters from the very start that never made it to the books. this is one of them. if you dont like it dont read the encyclopedia

Posted by Ranger Oct 20th 2007

I'm with Firebolt215 --I thought of Dumblddore as asexual too. But I consider that Christ-like--and I think of all people as asexual beings entering their Christhood. So---I won't let it spoil my view of the books...I think sexuality is pretty lame anyway and has nothing to do with Love human or divine.

Posted by harry8voldemort Oct 20th 2007

4 puppies they were born last night we think they're beagle daschund mix we cant tell now but there so cute

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 20th 2007

Posted by harry_potterdude Oct 20th 2007

wooooooooooooooooow, I did NOT see that Dumbledore thing comin........ And, even though she said Luna and Neville wouldn't hook up, I was so confidante, and the Petunia thing, it.... could have been more.....uhh.... heart-warming? like a hug or something, it would have made me almost cry

Posted by viaaurelia1310 Oct 20th 2007

Kadaj: who says he hasn't moved on? Just remember that being gay in Dumbledore's youth would've been quite difficult: he was 17 in 1860 or something, by the time being gay was halfway accepted in western society, it was at least 1960... so he'd be around 117. Dunno, just something to keep in mind.

Posted by tiassa Oct 20th 2007

I LOVE JO TOO!

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Oct 20th 2007

Awesome harry8voldy!! they sound adorable! Yeah viaaurelia... how old was dumbledore. He like died in 1996 right?

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

Viaaurelia, actually Dumbledore died at the age of 115 according the the Wizard of the Month (he was WoM for September).

Posted by harry8voldemort Oct 20th 2007

4 puppies we think they're beagle daschund mixes

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

Quiscalas: I feel entitled to say that a person is misguided if they label homosexuality as morally wrong. I've participated in numerous debates on the issue, and have carefully examined the opinions of prominent anti-gays. Not once have I come across a remotely sound argument against homosexuality; if there is one, anti-gays are mysteriously unable to articulate it.

Posted by viaaurelia1310 Oct 20th 2007

Quiscalus: really?? i remember Jo telling us he was 156, you can check HP Lexicon on that! That Wizard of the Month also said his year of death was 1996... though I am sure it was 1997! (end of 6th year is 1997!) so I'm not sure whether to believe the WoM!

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Oct 20th 2007

I wonder what Rita would do if she fond out that Dumbledore was gay... uh intersting though =/

Posted by Kadaj Oct 20th 2007

viaaurelia1310: I got the impression that he stayed pretty much single for the rest of his life. Why? Did he just not meet anyone else equal to him? On another note, the author 'thinks' Albus is gay. The author imagines that is how the character is, but there is no significant amount of evidence within the books to solidify that beleif. The author's 'peception' cannot be used as canon. Whatever is published has been left for us to interpret, and she has no control over how we judge things. She has now become a critic of her own work as much as any of the readers.

Posted by chommy Oct 20th 2007

@viaaurelia: End of 6th year is 1996, not 1997. =\

Posted by LadyEvelyn Oct 20th 2007

I found out on Good Morning America. Lol. I was thinking to myself, "I was wonder if they'll have anything on JKR's reading and a huge headline saying "Dumbledore is Gay" appeared. Yes, I was shocked, but not upset.

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

Araminta, the same can be said for the flip-side; there are many anti-gay [rights] people who have also examined both sides of the argument and concluded that homosexuality is morally wrong.

Posted by harry8voldemort Oct 20th 2007

let's see Grindelwald was a dark lord who waz gay... does that mean Voldemort was gay?

Posted by cerberus6000 Oct 20th 2007

Oh my gosh... Strike Dumbledore off of my favorite characters in a book. Snape up to the top! I would never have guessed... *shudders* Darn political correctness people, I can say I believe that being gay defies the laws of nature if I want to!

Posted by dolfinhawaii Oct 20th 2007

Voldemort was more likely to be gay i think. Anyway, just cuz JO wrote the books doesn't mean she knows everything.

Posted by rooon Oct 20th 2007

I knew it! Thanks lots foe the news!

Posted by AcidPops33 Oct 20th 2007

Hmm.. you know this is like the Dumbledore/World-Dominati on scenario we got from book 7. I would've never, ever in a million trillion years expect that Dumbledore used to be a Muggle-hater, but there it was. It shocked me, and it made me see him differently, but I still liked him. Of course, world domination is horribly evil and gayness is not (in my opinion), but that's basically how I feel right now. Basically I'm just caught off-guard.

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

Quiscalus: I'm well aware that the other side has reached its conclusion. The problem is that the conclusion doesn't stand: it rests on well known logical fallacies, distortions of the truth, and faith, which is a matter of personal opinion rather than objective fact. Until the other side can come up with sound, logical arguments, I have no choice but to reject its position.

Posted by Gamez613 Oct 20th 2007

ummmmmm..............wier d! Dumbledore's still my favorite character and hes still awesome but i think thats just unnecessary. soory Jo, u dont have my support in that decision.

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

Viaaurelia, I know, not too long ago I was reading up previous interviews with JKR and she did say Dumbledore was around 150 years old. I'm not too sure which is correct. (And this is one of the reason I don't interviews as cannon...)

Posted by viaaurelia1310 Oct 20th 2007

chommy: Wrong! In CoS, Nick's 500th Death Day Party, he died in 1492. Therefore: Halloween in second year was 1992. Therefore second year starts in september 1992, end in 1993. 3rd year: 1993-1994, 4th year: 1994-1995, 5th year: 1995-1996, 6th year: 1996-1997. Dumbledore died in 1997. Oh, and Kadaj: err... the author writes the story, not the readers!

Posted by jedi_anegram Oct 20th 2007

Since this is so far down, I doubt anyone will see this. But I really don't think she should have said anything. As a writer, you should let you readers draw their own conclusions to the story. I never really got that DD was gay in the books. I thought he was just an old man who had a very different relationship with Grindewald, like an unhealthy obsession. No one that I know of was even asking if DD was gay or not. Hopefully this doesn't hurt her sales (not that it will matter much to her now), but I thought this was an odd thing to have in what started out as children's books. She just really shouldn't have said anything. You never tell your readers what to think (I am a writer as well).

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Oct 20th 2007

ACID!!! YOUR HERE!!! move down one post were all there well except for a whole lot of people...but hey im here!!

Posted by rooon Oct 20th 2007

I meant for. JKR does know everything about hp. She's the only one who does. she invented it.
