More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

Hey Remi! *Waves* I'll stay up here for a bit, but maybe I'll open up another page and do two posts at once. :D I'm very curious about this topic.

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

Araminta, I know the kind of arguements you're talking about. ('People *chose* be gay!' 'My religion says it's wrong, so it must be.' Etc., etc.) Perhaps you have been looking in the wrong places and talking to the wrong people.

Posted by LemonDrops Oct 20th 2007

i'm worried now. I'm starting to think that with all those meetings in the office, when Harry left, Dumbledore was staring at his butt thinking, "Dang, I'd tap that".

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

I know an arguement against gays is that 'god' didnt make it that way, you know nature and stuff

Posted by cerberus6000 Oct 20th 2007

Araminta, how about this. humans were created, either through nature or God, to have one gender that is attracted to another. To be attracted to the other gender defies all laws of nature. The ability to create children is restricted to man and woman. Not man and man or woman and woman.

Posted by chommy Oct 20th 2007

@viaaurelia: Ah, yes. I see. Sorry. =D But I don't think you had to go WRONG! like that. ;)

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

I got to go to bed now. It was nice talking to you all... well, only the polite ones. :P Later.

Posted by fredgeorge1 Oct 20th 2007

WHHAAT??? That is ridiculous and completely pointless, why would she say that?? I agree that the readers should always decide for themselves, but there was absolutley no reason to make dmbledore gay!! and she said that its because "love can blind you" - but the fact they they were both geniuses and the only ones who could truly understand each other (which was the explaination in the book) was a perfectly good enough reason! This is extremely upsetting!!

Posted by bookwormoakes Oct 20th 2007

Why should it be so upsetting? It makes sense. And it's her book, she can do whatever the hell she wants.

Posted by ginnyroxharryssox Oct 20th 2007

harry potter is da best!!!!!!!! been reading hp since i was 7.....im now 14........jo u rock my sox........but wat was da point of making Dumbledore gay????????? i dont get it!!!!!!!! aw well it still rox!!!!!!!!!!! hp4lyf!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

Quiscalus: You don't know the sort of arguments I'm talking about. That's obvious given that you wouldn't know me from Jane down the street. Yes, I have encountered those arguments before; but I've seen countless others, as well, coming from literally dozens of different individuals, including prominent "experts." All of them have failed to stand to scrutiny. Cerberus6000 : That's called the naturallistic fallacy. (In short, an observation of a natural fact does not by itself equal an observation of a moral imperative.) Look it up on Wikipedia.

Posted by viki_hp_nerd Oct 20th 2007

omg, i never guessed! i always thought dumbledore and mcgonagall had a thing going...hehe

Posted by Seranikai Oct 20th 2007

Some of the comments here are disgusting. Just because Dumbledore is gay it doesn't make him a pedophile. It doesn't change his relationship with Harry at all.

Posted by the_kai Oct 20th 2007

What I don't understand is all this negative reaction. How does this change the character at all? So you didn't know he was gay to begin with; being gay doesn't change who he is. The only thing it changes is possibly the perceived relationship between him and Grindelwald, which, if anything, simply makes it make so much more sense. Oy.

Posted by AcidPops33 Oct 20th 2007

Wow there are going to be sooooooo many debates about this... on TV I mean. Obviously there are debates going on here right now! But I mean on all the talk shows, interviews, God it's going to be insane!

Posted by tbc07 Oct 20th 2007

I'm sorry in advance to anyone who may disagree with me: but this absolutely PISSES ME OFF!! I can not believe that J.K. would do something like this, claiming herself to be a Christian!! I don't want to argue with anyone, but I have lost all respect for this woman...she is an amazing writer, but this is going WAY too far over the limit! What would make her do this? She has turned me against my favorite character in the series...I don't know that I can ever read the books again without getting sick to my stomach as to what she has done...there was no reason for this, and she should never have said it...I hope that this was just a BIG, HORRIBLE joke of Rowling's, but if not, I have no more respect for her...absolutely stupid!! DUMBLEDORE IS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTT T GAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY YY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

actually its not in her book. And as the owner of my own mind, I choose not to accept the extra tidbits of information, even if they came from the author of the book. Wow, this has probably never happened before. I don't know that there has ever been such controversy about an author's perspective after the book was written.

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

Peopel seem to think just because he is gay, he was in love with every guy ever. THat is not the case. a hetero man is not in love with every girl he sees.

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Oct 20th 2007

Oh my god yes! i can see it now This week on like Good Morning America!! I'm deinatly gonna have to keep an eye out for that!! Yes dragon Queen i agree!!

Posted by Kadaj Oct 20th 2007

Cerberus6000 I heart yoou!!!! The Prince for the ULTIMATE win!!!!!!!

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

One of the biggest themes in the books is tolerance for those who are different. It's a shame that for most of you that lesson has not sank in. Many of you are acting exactly like typical mudblood-hating Slytherins.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

well yeah, but a lot of guys check out every girl they see. So, even if we didn't think of Dumbledore as checking out every girl he sees, when life git turned upside down and something completely unexpected happens, you start to say, hmm... what else didn't i bank on?

Posted by superfish31 Oct 20th 2007

I have to agree with what sirius_lee said about an hour ago... about how Jo might've just made it up. It would have been mentioned in the books cause I mean... this is a big thing! But no, she made refences of Dumbledore blushing when Madam Pomfry speaks to him. That dosn't lead to being gay at all. I think she made it up. =/

Posted by fredgeorge1 Oct 20th 2007

Yea this is definitely gonna cause an uproar.. i mean more than on fansites. There wasn't really a justified reason to do that, it doesnt really make sense

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Oct 20th 2007

Yeahh so well.. i personally think that this is gonna kill alot of Harry Potter fans and turn them away.. not like i mind or anything..

Posted by bookwormoakes Oct 20th 2007

Wow, you sound like a really smart, rational person tbc07. I just hope this news finally banishes all remaining Christian HP fans. "Oh lordy! Dum'dore ez a homosexual, that means this fictional character is goin' to hell! I best not sully my mind with such peculiarities!" You take yourself way too seriously if you think you and your religion negativly affects Harry Potter for the rest of us. As JKR said, these books are all about tolerance. Please keep your hate speech to yourself.

Posted by grintloverr Oct 20th 2007

OMG i was there! it was seriously the best day of my life haha and the crowd went wild when jkr said dumbledore was gay ughh jk is sooo nice and soo funny !

Posted by AcidPops33 Oct 20th 2007

This will definitely be huuuuuuuuuge.... Bigger than.... wait I'll think of something huge that happened.

Posted by tbc07 Oct 20th 2007

Just as I have lost respect for J.K., she has obviously lost all respect for her readers as well....ruining the series with this (for me at least, I know it's not ruined for everyone, and I wish that I could have your mindset, but I was raised in a Southern Baptist family, so being gay is like....BAD, BAD, BAD!!)

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

best example: for anyone 14-25, have yo ever checked out a 2 year old? thats how it is probably, only a bigger age difference.

Posted by jedimasterkelso Oct 20th 2007

Finally. Finally finally FINALLY!! A good, mainstream book, not about homosexuality, not even featuring homosexuality, but with a homosexual character. This is something I've been looking forward to for a while. I love JK! Only she could make such and influential character gay and now make a circus out of it in the book! God love her!!

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 20th 2007

still shocked....i might never get over this! but WHY did she make him gay??? i wish jo had a good reason!

Posted by malteselover Oct 20th 2007

Okay then..... I wonder if this is just to annoy the snot out of Laura Mallory. If it is, Jo is genius. If it isn't, Jo is still genius. Also this could be a way of Jo saying, "look, Dumbledore was gay, but he was still a good person." We all could learn to be more accepting of people regardless of who they love.

Posted by Kelsey06 Oct 20th 2007

omg Dumbledore is gay? That's like...omg the sky is yellow today and the sun is blue! This is just so random! From reading the canon, you never would guess it! Well then again there's the whole lemon drop/socks thing. I just don't know how I feel about this. I know they shouldn't but now every time I read it when Hermione says, "Dumbledore loved Harry," these awful pictures are going to crop up in my mind. EWWWWWWWWWWWW!

Posted by Sorsha Oct 20th 2007

Anybody that says children should not be allowed to read HP anymore because of Dumbledore's being gay is crazy! There may have been a few people that speculated about his orientation, however, not once in the books is there a gay scene!! JKR did NOT expose children to homosexuality, she simply stated a fact about a character that she was asked well after the publication!! Kid's could still read the books unaware of that fact like most of us were.

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

Kadaj: Why would you send Cerberus6000 a heart? His post was an illustration of one of the best known logical fallacies. If anything, you should be sending him your sympathy for embarrassing himself.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

okay, so now the hate speech is that all Christians are unejimicated bumkins. that's really great. you are spreading hate farther than I ever could, thank you. You want to get rid of all the Christians? So much for tolerance. I haven't said anything about HATING anybody myself, and everyone seems to hate me for hating! define paradox.

Posted by Kadaj Oct 20th 2007

Araminta: It is not a naturallistc fallacy, it is science through observation and analysis. That is the scientific method of thinking. Atleast Albus had no interest in Snape. He was kept pure and whole. She inadvertently made him the ultimate character, up until book 7 that is...

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Oct 20th 2007

Wow this post is getting like 4 coments per minute!!

Posted by Tjara Oct 20th 2007

Homophobia = the ultimate lulz generator.

Posted by andycaro Oct 20th 2007

I agree that peeps HAVE to consider how their comments are showing an intolerance like we have not seen since Fudge and Thickness were Ministers. I bet Cho is gay too... i wouldn't mind getting together with her:) I think those that are making the wide leap to pedophile should stop. by saying it, you are lending credit to it and that is like what Rita Skeeter did. Did we learn nothing in these last 17 years. Not just by reading about Harry's struggles, but living in our world!! If you accepted that "magic" could be real, then why does finding that one person in the world that makes you feel loved? AcidPops33, bdowdy, viaaurielia-- your comments are very thoughtful and real:) "ear, ear!!"

Posted by cindybower Oct 20th 2007

no wonder Dumbledore was always giving harry "private sessions". I still luv Dumbledore. He is/was a great character and him being gay is not gonna change my opinion of him.

Posted by AcidPops33 Oct 20th 2007

I just want to point out that I find it interesting that some of you are angry at JKR for saying this in front of kids, but not at Mugglenet to posting it on a site that is visited by the youngers. Just a thought.

Posted by tbc07 Oct 20th 2007

I do not hate gay people...I have friends that are gay, but I do NOT agree with their lifestyle...I don't have to agree with it, but I am not going to endorse it either...so much for you bookwormoakes...back off of me, please...I said I don't want to argue with anyone, so don't make me, please!! You are obviously the one who "hates" me and Christians...just because I am a Christian does not mean (in the words of albusmademecry) "unejimicated bumkins"....you are spreading hate farther than i ever have or ever will...I hate no one, I just don't agree with their lifestyle...so it is hard for me to accept that my favorite character from Harry Potter (for the last half of my life!) is now gay...I just can't accept it, and I never will, so please, please, please back off of me and stop trashing me, i really do not appreciate it.

Posted by superfish31 Oct 20th 2007

I agree, this is causing an uproar -.- I don't think I'll ever think of Dumbledore as gay (like I said before) and if J.K. is just kidding around.. which I hope she is.. then we'll hear about it soon.

Posted by fireking Oct 20th 2007

tbc07, i completly agree with you. (i dont have friends who are gay, though.) thank you for standing up for your belifs. i guess im kinda shocked

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

lol acidpops. very true, idk who is the youngest user here, but they probably know about gay people. besides how young are these children? 5?4?6? what?

Posted by Kadaj Oct 20th 2007

Yeah well, potter sites flow which ever the author does. The author talks about certain themes therefore the sites will include them. The series was never meant for children, what with Aberforth and Arianna in there, yet the author still chose to write it for the youngsters. That is where the story is lacking. It isn't being communicaed ata ahigher level where it should.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

JK rowling is probably giggling like a mad hatter right now. haha. And acid pops is right, about muggle net posting this on here. But what exactly can we do about it? Furthermore, what can we do about what Rowling said? Nothing, Discuss it I guess.

Posted by tbc07 Oct 20th 2007

Thanks fireking...i'm shocked too
