More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."
Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.
Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."
Stay tuned, more to come soon!
EDIT: Click HERE to see MuggleNet's Emerson Spartz discuss the news on At Large with Geraldo Rivera... and subsequently get parodied on Jimmy Kimmel.

Kadaj: It is a logical fallacy, and one of the best known ones (it's called the naturallistic fallacy or argumentum ad naturam; look it up on Wikipedia or Google). You can't jump from an observation of a natural fact to a moral imperative. The realm of natural facts doesn't even touch that of moral philosophy. You have to draw a strong, well-reason bridge between the two realms. Cerberus6000 did not do that--he made an observation about nature and then jumped immediately to a moral declaration; he failed to breach the is-ought problem, AKA Hume's Guillotine. Inform yourself on these things, and THEN we can have a rational discourse here.
andycaro nice way to put it!! its exactly how i feel about all of this!!
I don't think I can picture Dumbledore as gay either. It just doesn't fit how I see him. It's really nothing to do with me disliking gays, it's just how I see him. (It's like this: picture how you see... Ron say. Ron from the books, before you saw the movies. Now picture Rupert. It's at least a bit different right? It's like that for me.) Eventually I may be able to see him as gay, but for now that doesn't fit the persona for the Dumbledore I imagined. Thank you very much andycaro! I have a strong belief that you don't have to agree with who someone is/what they do, but you should still accept them. (Obviously this doesn't apply to molesters and such, but you get the picture.)
I sorta thought that it was cute when dumbledore mentioned that he hadn't blushed that much since Madam pomfrey complimented him on his earmuffs. but I guess that was meaningless. I'll never be able to read book 7 with the same view point as before.
omg!!!! that is so awesome that dumbledore is gay, i think its a notable thing that it is because it shows that the most wise and intelligent person can be gay!! and nevillle and hannah... how cute can u get!!!! and that was so sweet of what petunia was thinking!!!!!! =]
Oh for Gods sake, Dumbledore was gay,so what??? everyone who has a problem with it should get over it, accept it, and realise that this doesn't change Dumbledore in the slightest, he is the brilliant man he always was. Frankly ,any true Dumbledore fans should be grateful that we've found out something else about him! I can't believe all the discriminative, insulting comments that are here. DUMBLEDORE IS THE BEST HE TOTALLY ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!1
Tbc07: I understand where you are coming from. I feel the same way about polygamists. But, if you dont want harassment, dont post, and dont let Dumbledore being gay destroy your vision of him. Ok? Look, if anything, it really doesnt affect the series at all. What about all those people who are still devasted about it being Ron and hermione? she they stop admiring hermion and the books? no. Jkrowling didnt write this book for kids. Or adults. She wrote it for herself.
As a gay Christian (yes, I said it), I am constantly reminded the the Bible teaches us to love one another's differences. In Matthew 7, Jesus states "Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged and the measue with which you measure will be measured out of you...You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from you eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from you brother's eye." And while we're on the subject about what the Bible does and does not say, here are some items found in the Old Testament: Exodus 21 7-8 (Paraphrased): Allowing of a man to sell his daughter into slavery. Exodus 35 2 (Paraphrased): Calls for anyone working on the Saboth to be put to death. (We're probably all guilty of that one) Leviticus 11, 7 (Paraphrased): Touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. (MMM, so much for football players). Think about it. The Bible says a lot of things, many of which have been deemed a sign of Biblical times. The point is you can't just pick and choose which parts of the Bible you literally subscribe to. You either except the whole Bible as fact, or you except the Contextual Critical read of the Bible which looks at the time in which the Bible was writen. Further more, don't judge, love. Judging is God's job, not yours.
"Perhaps Dumbledore's sexuality is not relevant enough or appropriate enough to be put in the books, but is still relevant enough to be answered as a question." - I agree with this comment by Sonja earlier - It wasn't really important enough to be a central part of the books - what does it matter what Dumbledores sexuality is? - but I still like to find out all these little bits of information to add to what we know already. She can never answer every question, but the more she can, the more I want to know! Yes, it may be unnecessary, but I still love HP and I still want to know!I think a lot of people feel it would change the whole storyline because then 'Dumbledore obviously fancies Harry'. Why does he? Being gay doesn't make him a paedophile, and if he was straight he wouldn't be accused of fancying all female students, would he? If it's a problem, then that is a homophobic view. Ps. If this annoys Laura Mallory, JKR is more of a genius than we could have ever thought! hehe
I think Catie said it best an hour ago: "I don't see why people are wonderingg why Jo brought it up. Someone asked a question about Dumbledore's love life, and she answered it. She didn't just call a press conference and say HEY GUESS WHAT! DUMBLEDORE IS GAY!!! It's a bit like asking a male friend if they have a girlfriend, they say no, they're gay." In an ideal world, this is how most people would respond.
There is no way that dumbledore is gay..thats just not how i want to remember him by...Dumberwald? No thanks.
I fear I'vebeen out of the loop for too long. Who is this Laura Mallory?
laura mallory is the crazy as crap woman who tried (and is still trying) to get HP removed from school libraries because it is "evil and contains witchcraft"...she is a nutter
Laura Mallory is a georgia mother wh otried to ban hp albusmademecry. I would also like to compliment wondermus22 on hhis/her research on the subject. I tip my hat off to you.
Neville and a Hufflepuff? Someone, please, think of the children! Yes! Jo has just moved up on my favorite authors list for the saychness...
this has made my day...now if only she could tell us if Voldemort is a virgin!!!!! IS VOLDEMORT A VIRGIN?????????? I HOPE NOT!
Jo got asked a question, she answered it. Any more info just adds more to the amazing world of Harry Potter! Would you have preferred she hadn't answered the question? I sure wouldn't!
Oh my god Laura Mallory should die!! This is gonna be like christmas for her...oh god my english teacher if she fins out she wont like me read Harry Potter for my quarter project!! Erg she just barely agreed for me to do it too
gosh, I don't want to discuss the sex lives of ANY of the characters. Gay or hetero. None. Well, Jk Rowling did say that she takes it as an honor to be put with other prestigious authors that made the band books list. She would be in good company.
idk... Voldy and Bella.. what a mix!!
Remi, if she doesn't then you can accuse of bigotry!!! Ooooh I hope she does now... *Laughs maniacly*
I would also like to compliment wondermus22 on their amazing biblical research skills. Man, this is one more thing to add to the list of reasons why my crazy Laura-Mallory Wannabee aunt thinks I'm going to Hell for reading Harry Potter. Joy.
I wish I had a crazy laura mallory aunt. I would have someone I could insult daily!
Wow... just wow. You kno, looking back on the series, I'm surprised that she didn't include a gay character, well, I guess I'm not surprised anymore. Definitely unexpected.
dragon queen: you can have some of my crazy people to insult. I never get any work done, I have so many.
Remi, there's no way your teacher can not let you do your report on HP just because a character is gay. That's bigotry and discrimination. And Dragon Queen, you can have her!
Aww, thanks albusmademecry, ever since my cousin matured and stopped believing in santa clause, Ive been suffering from inulting withdrawl. Ive been WAY to nice...*shudders*
"My comment about the necessity of announcing that Dumbledore is gay isn't intended to be homophobic. It's a matter of narrative detail. Whether Dumbledore is straight or gay is an irrelevant detail that does nothing important for the narrative. I can't figure out why she'd even bring it up. Not everyone feels a need to know whether people are straight or gay. Can't they just be? Rowling's commentary on it feels merely titillating. I adore the books, but I find Rowling a little sloppy at times. (James Potter comes to mind.) " I see what you mean but you also must remember that this isn't mentioned in the books at all. She said it for the curious fans during an interview. It also doesn't matter that Neville married Hannah, that's why it's not in the book either.
SERIOUSLY, YOU SUCK JK. JUST BECAUSE THE SERIES HAS ENDED DOESNT MEAN YOU CAN F*** WITH CHARACTERS WE KNOW AND LOVE JUST FOR SH**S AND GIGGLES! I DONT EVEN HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST BEING GAY!!!!! ARGGGHHHHHH
SirKerrek -- I remember thinking, Wow, JKR has so many controversial themes going on in her books, I wonder why she doesn't approach homosexuality... I always figured that she thought it wouldn't be appropriate for children or something. Guess I was wrong there...
Dumbledore gay? Thats AMAZING!
This is like revealing that Dumbledore had chicken pox when he was 8. It's irrelevant to the plot and all the amazing things he's done with life. I agree that JK was asked a question and she should have answered it but it shouldn't change the story and it shouldn't change the character (as written). All this is just background info that's great for fanfic writers etc. The books stand alone.
Talkingeyebook: It wasn't brought up as a random comment, she was merely answering a fans question. And Grnd3lW4Ld I think your comment contradicts your belief that you have nothing against being gay.
and thanks lindsays ;P. I hate it when people post 'this is stupid, even though I have no problem with it'. Unless you give a good reson.
dragon queen: you can have either my hippie neighbor that tries to convert me to liberalism or my brother's friend that gets drunk and passes out on our couch. Your choice.
yes i cant wait till Monday!!
GRINDS UVE SAID IT ALL I SOOO AGREEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! eff this sh*t!! y th hell would she do thta?
Okay, Grindelwald, what do you mean?
Okay, so I've decided to overlook the information about Dumbledore, as I find it completely irrelevant to the series, and just move on to the Petunia news. I always hoped there was some good in her somewhere. I am curious whether Harry ever saw the Dursleys again though.
And lythe: I can see how you might feel it is irrelevant to the story, but surely it doesn't change anything? It doesn't contradict anything JK has written in the books, and, providing one doesn't have a problem with homosexuals, surely his sexuality doesn't affect their view of him?
definately the hippe :0
You have to be kidding me. No-one else had guessed Dumbledore was gay? It was so obvious for me in book seven I thought everyone else would at least have suspicions... -Laugh-
Yeah i had suspicon but now like everyones IMing me saying well look Dumbledore loved Harry and im like wow you idiots go away!!
I think Petunia chose status in society over her child rearing responsibilities because of her husband
darn I gotta go to some ones house. no matter, one of them is a harry potter fan and is not aware of dumbledore...*evil smile* cant wait to tell her! No matter! au revoir!
OMFG, ROWLING FOR THE WIN!! It really rocks my socks off that she included a gay character. Because I mean, come on, that many people, one of them HAD to be gay. Simple statistics. Much like Luna/Rolf, I'm going to put on my happy blinders and pretend that I didn't hear about Nev/Hannah. Luna/Neville forever!!
SCREWWW YOUUUU JJJKKKKKK ROWWWWLLING! IMA SEND A MIND ROCKET AT YOURE HEAD SO I CAN TAKE CONTROL OF YOURE BRAIN AND TAKE BACK THIS ENTIRE DARN THING!!!!!!
Okay guys, Grindelwald isn't upset because Dumbledore is gay. He's mad because he feels like JKR is messing with his view of who Dumbledore is.
I honestly had no idea! I was really surprised when I saw it on Mugglenet! Just another question, for people who find it a real problem: If JK suddenly said 'Oh, Dumbledores actually black' or 'he had ginger hair, not grey' would that be a problem? Would you say that ruined the books? Just wondering.
im sorry but the whole dumbledore thing is absolutely madd crazy nasty. at first i refused to believe it then i saw it on the news and i was like wtf??! no freaking way!!that is sooo messed up and hell yeah im not gona look at himthe same way again. he was so freaking close to harry and im sorry but that is just plain nasty...grindlewald? did dumbledork fight with him cuz he didnt share the same feelings?? im sorry but i dont like the whole idea of gay wizards..dumbledore was weird enough without this whole thing. he could have told harry atleast....he said he loved harry...this so soo gross. i hate jkr thats right i hate her,...she is just trying to expand her fanbase...first she marres neville and luna off to some no names and kills fred ans tonks and lupin...and snape..and now im just bloody pissed. there is no reason for it.
