More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

HEY CHEESECAKIANS! if any are here anyways

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

it would definitely be a problem if Dumbledore was black or had ginger hair....IF she told us after she released the books. That would be so dumb. I have a mental image of Dumbledore now, and I would disregard those comments, not because i hate black people or ginger haired people. And I don't know about you, but Dumbledore's beard made him who he was to me.

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Oct 20th 2007

hey quirrel!! were discusing how jk kinda meesed up harry potter...

Posted by ginnypotter719 Oct 20th 2007

Posted by AcidPops33 Oct 20th 2007

Yea I think we're all feeling a little attacked by this now, not because of the gayness, but just because it was sprung on us. (Unless you saw this coming, but I know I certainly didn't!)

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 20th 2007

CHEESECAKIANS DOWN ONE POST!!!!!! THIS GAY POST IS TOO... COMMOTION-END UP...... IM SI PISSED RITE NOW GUYS!!!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

IT DOESNT EVEN HAVE TO DO WITH BEING GAY! ITS LIKE SAYING HE HAD BABIES MACGONAGAL AND GOT THEM ABORTED, JUST BEING CONTROVERSIAL FOR THE HECK OF IT...IM SURSLEE PISSED!

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

have any of you been playing that little 'smack the sumo wrestler's stomach' gamethat keeps apearing at the bottom?

Posted by SilverWitch7 Oct 20th 2007

OK, I duess everyone should get over this. It still maybe shocking, but I'm sort of getting over it now. Being homosexual or hetrosexual, Dumbldore is still Dumbldore (or was Dumbledore). Most of us love him, so what difference does it make if he fell in love with Grindelwald. No one can help it. Dumbledore is still intelligent, brave, smart, loyal and all those other things. JK is sort of introducing in her books, what is already present in society. But I guess she should have given us a heads up.

Posted by Rotten Oct 20th 2007

Oh, come on people. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he was gay for Harry. What does his sexuality have to do with who he was as a character? I'm glad she didn't reveal this during the series because the way a lot of you are reacting is ridiculous. What could she possibly get out of saying it now? Sure, there's a little more press coverage but only because people like you are making it into a huge thing! What if she'd said Fred Weasley was gay? Or Neville? Or Crabbe? Or Voldemort? Would you be reacting like you are now?

Posted by Quirrell_is_a_squirrel Oct 20th 2007

i think this might be just a rumor, prbly, that some person sent in, but it def sounds real to me, y'all. i really dont know wat to think about harry potter anymore. ur right, remi, this has totally messed us up! now i have no life to live.

Posted by BeckyWannaCuppa Oct 20th 2007

Albusmademecry: Okay, so the mental image might be mucked up - maybe I didn't pick the best examples. But how does someone being gay muck up a mental image of someone? What I was trying to say is that saying something ruins his character when it doesn't really affect it is silly. His sexuality never played any part in the story, so it doesn't affect or conflict with any previously written storylines. It's just some more knowledge about him. And people who hate JKR for this: We wouldn't have Dumbledore if it wasn't for her , or any of the other characters. Surely a gay Dumbledore is better than none at all?! lol

Posted by OD_94 Oct 20th 2007

Look, ginnypotter719 - If you can write novels better than Harry Potter, go do it!!!

Posted by LoonyLovegoodLover Oct 20th 2007

ooo great..... something else for suburban housewives to hate harry potter for lol

Posted by AcidPops33 Oct 20th 2007

I think, sadly, people would be reacting the same way Rotten. Well maybe not if it was a really disliked character, but still.. No I think it's real Quirrell. I just feel a little caught off-guard, I need time to get used to it. Brb guys, gotta go to my dad's house.

Posted by Starrybird Oct 20th 2007

It makes perfect sense for Dumbledore to be gay and explains a lot about his former life.

Posted by homefly Oct 20th 2007

I've always thought of Dumbledore as asexual, meaning that even if he had romantic attractions of a homosexual nature, and he didn't really have any desire for sexual contact, he's still an asexual and not a homosexual. I know it's semantics, but according to the definition of the word, it fits. From what I've read of her statements, and what I know of Dumbledore from the books, this makes perfect sense. He's not a homosexual, he an asexual. However, it's all up to JKR, if she wants to make the Dumbledore from the books still lusting for homosexual sex, that's her business. Personally, I'd prefer to think of him as not having any sexual appetite at all.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

harry and dumbledore are now the new frodo and that other gay hobbit...it doesnt matter if its not real thats what people will think.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

i know, i just love patronizing people in chat rooms sometimes. I have to be in the right mood....Indeed, Gay Albus beats no Albus, but that wasn't really the options so i'm still a little razzled. She needs to say a little more than that for me to fully develop an opinion on this. And I'm not sure I'm so mad that she made him gay as I am about who she had him fall in love with. But then again, if she said he was gay, but didn't say who he liked, we would all just assume Harry. BETTER TO HAVE SAID NOTHING AT ALL WOMAN!

Posted by Quibblercrazy Oct 20th 2007

those anti- potter groups will have a field day. jeeze i'm still wraping my mind around it. dumbledore is gay, interisting. but hey go neville!

Posted by OD_94 Oct 20th 2007

I agree with homefly!!!!!

Posted by t_quigs Oct 20th 2007

I think it's important to note: Rowling added that she always regarded her novels as a "prolonged argument for tolerance." (source http://www.cbc.ca/arts/bo oks/story/2007/10/20/dumb ledore-gay.html, Canadian news). This should be the end-all of the discussion... after all, Dumbledore taught us about love and acceptance... Go listen to "All We Have is Love" by Harry and the Potters. I think it's fabulous to have such a positive character be a gay man, because frankly, when have there ever been good gay role models? It's not his sexuality that matters, its his personality. And to all those people saying how he was probably "into Harry" and all that crap... I think you're the sick ones.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

scooch over, OD and homefly, I want to cling to that theory too.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

homefly, you can be homosexual and still asexual. or straight and asexual. "It makes perfect sense for Dumbledore to be gay and explains a lot about his former life." WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? WHERE?

Posted by BeckyWannaCuppa Oct 20th 2007

I agree with SilverWitch and Rotten and ginnypotter - if you don't care what colour he is, why do you care what sexuality he is and hate JKR for it. I'm sorry, I just don't get it. And thanks, Andycaro! We all Love HP - that's why we're here - and I don't think JKR could ever ever ruin it. She wrote it, she made it what it is today, and it's her world - she can do what she likes with it. She's not doing it for publicity - she's been working with these characters for years, and so obviously knows things about that we don't, such as Dumbledore's sexuality. She just wants people to know more about the world she created; if you don't like it, you don't have to re-read the books or be on this site, to be honest!

Posted by sillyme Oct 20th 2007

GET OVER IT PEOPLE! why has this messed up harry potter?????????? you guys, most of you anyway, have been coming on here for YEARS and OBSESSING OVER THE ENDING OF DH, and now the series is ruined because a character is GAY??????????? get over yourselves, is is the 21st century! have an open mind. i am very shocked myself, but it shouldn't be a big deal. what if a gay person came on this site and felt uncomfortable because you guys don't even like DUMBLEDORE because he was gay, and bashing gay people in general? be tolerant, not bigots! gosh

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

alas, earwax.

Posted by Quirrell_is_a_squirrel Oct 20th 2007

k i g2g now! bye!!!!!!!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

silltme who are you directing that to? if its me then you didnt read what I said. "I think it's fabulous to have such a positive character be a gay man, because frankly, when have there ever been good gay role models?" what does it matter??? its not like theres a negative gay man, why does there need to be a positive gay one?

Posted by Rotten Oct 20th 2007

BeckyWannaCuppa, you hit it on the head - 'She's not doing it for publicity - she's been working with these characters for years, and so obviously knows things about that we don't, such as Dumbledore's sexuality.' JK made this world. She knows all there is about it. She created them and she knows everything about them, from simple things like their hair colour to the complicated stuff like their darkest secrets. She CAN'T ruin anything, because all she's doing is revealing the things that weren't put across in the book. How could she 'ruin' anything if the world of Harry Potter is staying exactly as she created it?

Posted by rooon Oct 20th 2007

1078-wow! :)

Posted by xsophx Oct 20th 2007

To be honest i dont think dumbledore being gay should effect how anyone feels towards the hp books. it doesnt undo all that he stood for and what he accomlished!!! ps and to everyone that implied that dumbledore had a crush on harry, theyre just immature and should grow up!!

Posted by SirRobin Oct 20th 2007

Well, that's interesting. It doesn't really change anything for me... but if you don't think there is evidence in the book to support her claim, remember that many critics believe that the work stands alone - "the author is dead" and all. So, it's something to ponder and discuss, but not necessarily something to forced into if you do not find it in the work. So. That said, JK has all my support in her statement. Have a good day! SR

Posted by homefly Oct 20th 2007

Grnd3lW4Ld, from what I've read about asexuality, you can experience gay, straight, bi attraction, but not desiring sexual contact is what makes you an asexual person. From what I've read about Dumbledore from JKR, he may or may not have had that desire when he was younger, but she never wrote that he did during the time of the books. If that's the case, he's most likely an asexual character by definition, rather than a homosexual one. From the Asexual Visibility Education Network site: "A good proportion of asexuals get crushes on others and fall in love. Emotional and romantic attraction are separate from sexual attraction. For some people they go together, but they are not necessarily connected." Wouldn't that fit Dumbledore and Grindewald? She never said they did have sex or that Dumbledore desired sex, but she never said they didn't either. Even if they did, my argument about Dumbledore during the time of the books still stands. If they didn't, it makes Dumbledore's possible asexual orientation with homosexual attraction even more plausible.

Posted by jamieenichole Oct 20th 2007

honestly, i wish that she hadnt said that. i've come to know a certain dumbledore throughout the series, and it momentarily changed my entire perspective.. but his sexual oreintation doesnt change all the amazing things he has done, or any of his accomplishments. ahh. i dont agree with it... but i still love the series, JKR and dumbledore. and as for Longbottom/Abott- good for nevile!!! :]

Posted by GinnyNHarryKISSING Oct 20th 2007

I'm a little disapointed because I thought he was in love with Professor McGonagall but that would explain why he was so blinded by Grindelwald. It pisses me off though, the whole point of reading is seeing the world for yourself in your own mind. And all that is connected to that world should be up to the reader to speculate. I am only a little saddened because how I saw the world turn out is all wrong now and I was happy with my conclusion lol. I wanted Neville to marry Luna. Well just like JRR Tolkien made his world set in stone and the way he explained it is the way it is, so is Jo's world.

Posted by HannahAbbott Oct 20th 2007

This totally wrong- About Hannah and Neville. It should be Hannah/Ernie and Neville/Luna! It just really grosses me out! Why the heck would Hannah be a landlady?!!!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

rotten, i think if she thought dumble was gay dont you think it would have shown through even just a little? Maybe im stupid but to me it didnt at all. she doesnt know evverything, this just is so random seems to me its justmade up on the spot

Posted by lumosxsolem Oct 20th 2007

she is sparking contraversy for no reason! ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh i have nothign against gays but i mean it was obvious dumbledore was flambuoyant. WHY DID SHE DO THIS. she ditn have to make a dman statment. controversy is gonna be everywhere!

Posted by moonal Oct 20th 2007

like someone else stated, i always thought of dumbledore as asexual as well, especially since jkr never mentioned anything about his romantic life. i don't care if he's gay or straight or bisexual, [in fact all my friends know that i'm quite the fag hag] but what i'm angry about is this seemingly sudden revelation by jo. maybe she's always thought of dumbly as being gay, but to me this announcement just seems like something she came up with on the spot, and said to create more hype. so i'm angry about that. the other major thing bothering me is how ppl are going to miscontrue everything from now on - already ppl are clamouring about those 'extra study sessions with harry', etc. yes, most of it's being done in a joking manner but i just don't like it! and last but not least, the unrequited aspect of it bugs me just as much. i just find it grossly unfair that the one person dumbledore once loved was the one he had to vanquish and imprison - as if he didn't already have enough troubles in his life! why couldn't he have had some past [or current] lover that reciprocated! ugh, i dunno if i'm making sense but yea, i'm just not very pleased with this new tidbit of info.

Posted by andycaro Oct 20th 2007

hmmm... but... she does know everything about him!! He is hers:)

Posted by ilovebooksandmusic Oct 20th 2007

hehehehe.......Laura Mallory.......Well, to me it does not honestly matter.......hehehehe.... .....Laura Mallory.........

Posted by Rotten Oct 20th 2007

Grnd3lW4Ld - Dumbledore has always been the type of character whose sexuality was never of cause to be mentioned. I doubt you'd find him hitting on people! In any case, I wasn't surprised by this. By the end of the seventh book I'd already assumed he was, since I think some bits hinted it heavily.

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 20th 2007

I agree HannahAbbot, Lun/neville and Hannah/Ernie,and how degrading for Hannah to be a landlady: (

Posted by eekem Oct 20th 2007

Why should it be an issue? Personally, I really like this bit. I didn't expect it, but it didn't really shock me either. It bothers me how many homophobes there are here. Seriously, people, get a grip! This doesn't make Dumbledore a bad person by any stretch, it's simply a new fact about him which has just come out. I must say, I have always sorta wondered why he wasn't married. And it's interesting to know why he didn't kill Grindelwald... What's with all this "Dumbledore is a pedophile" crap. It's not any more likely because he's gay. Go Dumbledore!

Posted by iheartnurdz Oct 20th 2007

What the hell? Why are all you homophobes so pissed off about this??? Everyone I've talked to about it was like "omg, JKR for the win". How does it change his character at all if he's gay? He's still the same Dumbledore!! Besides, at the point we're reading he's completely asexual so it doesn't matter one bit who he loved when he was young.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

from my understanding, asexual just means 1: you cant have sex, no private regions or 2: you have no wanting to. homosexual just means you are attracted to youre own sex. so, you can be hetero and asexual, or gay and asexual, it doesnt matter, there not even in the same category. so I dont really know what youre saying. I dont know, but i think most people drive goes away when they reach dumbles age anyway. I still dont see anywhere in the story supporting this at al...can someone point me...or explain
