More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

Can we please stop with the pedophilia!! You know that half the pedofiles are "straight"!! gay does not mean molesting a child!!

Posted by rhapsody_en_blonde Oct 20th 2007

Yeah, I'm gonna go make some cookies.

Posted by ohhthecheat Oct 20th 2007

Please stop insisting that being Christian mean believing homosexuality is wrong. Some sects (i.e. Catholicism) do not support homosexuality. But many, many, many Christians do. And many Homosexuals are Christians. I'd like to think that Christians primarily believe in being good people, accepting and forgiving of others. The only definition of Christianity I can draw from this message board is that of a selective, hateful pseudo-community.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

lol..."dont agree with the life style"...republicans and catholics answer to not look like a homophobe and still not agree with being gay

Posted by KaileeA42 Oct 20th 2007

OMG! OH MY GODRIC!!! What dumbledore is gay whay the heck!! Ahhh! The whole world had gone crazy! This si totally messing up my brain. Tooo disturbing! Jo too much information! P.S Isn't Hannah in Hufflepuuf! Liked the Aunt Petunia stuff though! I can't wait to find out what else she said though! I hope it isn't as disturbing though!

honeydukes0209 - You have not idea how many of these comments have hurt me, and I am sure I am not the only one.

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 20th 2007

okay, bilsal..you are making way too big of a deal...come on...if you're a true harry potter fan, it shouldn't affect you that greatly...just try reading the earlier comments and you'll see what i mean...

Posted by thepottertwins Oct 20th 2007

For all of you who are so hung up on this: It's fiction. NONE of it is real, and if you want to, you can choose to disregard it, since there is NOTHING to prove it at all in the books.

Posted by ohhthecheat Oct 20th 2007

Why are you all so surprised about this? The evidence is all there. Weren't most of us shocked when in Book 7 we found out that Dumbledore had a stint with muggle-hating and world domination? Who was he following? Grindewald. His love and admiration blinded him to the cruelty that his own and Grindewald's behavior was causing. Did you all think that a noble character like Dumbledore would have been so seriously misled just out of curiosity and awe of Grindewald? It makes much more sense that he not only admired Grindewald, but loved him as well, and followed his example despite his own conscience. Dumbledore was always stressing the power of love. Doesnt this seem to fit the mold?

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 20th 2007

oh my goodness, wondermus22...i am deeply sorry for anyone or anything that might have offended of hurted you...no one can imagine what you or people like you are going through..i cannot imagine at all...so i apologize for everyone in behalf of this...

CHEESECAKIANS CUM ON THE VERY TOP POST... THIS IS WAAAAY TOO CRWODED.. WE WRE ON THE THIRD BUT ITS LONELY... oh and i personally have nothing gagainst gay ppl but this BS y is she effin the charecters up??

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

honeydukes - I am fortunate to not experience much biggotry. All my family and friends have been supportive and loving. However, as an earlier posting pointing out. Not all gays and lesbians have that support structure. To be faithful to a message board around books that promote love and tolerance, seeing some of these posts can be very hard to swallow. Thank you for your kind words!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

please ohhthecheat, jk pulled this out of youre a$$, you are nitpicking. a small plot detail like that is cliffs away from being able to say "dumbledore is gay" factually

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

hola everyonee :]

Posted by bilsal Oct 20th 2007

honeydukes0209 - this has completely ruined the character of dumbledore for me. i can never enjoy harry potter like i used to again.

Posted by thepottertwins Oct 20th 2007

Oh please, come on people, tell me how this really makes that much of a difference! IF YOU DoN'T LIKE IT, IGNORE IT!

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

Luna_Black: By suggesting that you might condone slavery, you've lost pretty much any moral authority on this issue that you could possibly have had. Of course, you can still admit that you don't condone slavery, but then you'd have to admit that, ironically enough, your labeling of Jo as a hypocrite was itself--hypocritical.

Posted by virginiaa4990 Oct 20th 2007

This reallly makes me mad. Mostly because I'll never be able to read about Dumbledore the same way again. I'd be a lot more ok with it had I known it all along. What's the point of even knowing what Dumbledore's sexuality is? It's not relavent to the story. I wish I never saw this...

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 20th 2007

wondermus22, i'm glad i could've been of help...it must be hard, and you're very lucky to have those kind friends and your family! :) i hope everyone here will look at this, and be a less...well, outspken? i'll be here if you ever need to talk, wonder! you're very very welcome.... and bilsal...dumbldore is one of my top favorite characters...and it was also hard for me...but trust me...once it sinks in...i'm sure you will love harry potter just as you have before! but you of course are completley entitled to your opinion...:]

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

wooooooooooooooooooooooow wait. i just finished reading this post and its said that dumbledore is gay! wtf! plz wht the hell would JK rowling do that???

Posted by luna_black Oct 20th 2007

Araminta, i never said half the things you said. i don't know what's going on, and if i implied ANYTHING about slavery or women-preaching, show me! 'cause that's not the issue! and if i implied JK's a hypocrite, i'm sorry, but her statement IS hypocritical. (to everyone else: in my first comment, i used the word "repulsed" , and i'm sorry; i misused that word; i really wasn't repulsed, just extremely shocked and disappointed..)

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 20th 2007

HPfanx14, very nice...!

Posted by Clark Oct 20th 2007

Oh Hexx with it. I quit it. The man was a fine man and there's little more to say than that. The end. I'd perfer him a-sexual, on the terms of being solitary and strong, but that's alright. He was 'the better man' than most... With respect, ~Clark (D69)

Posted by roxorgirl13 Oct 20th 2007

Uhhh, I always thought Dumbledore was a bit fruity, but gay? I mean im not against being gay, but its just kinda dumb i think. Something this big would be in the book i mean come on!! maybe she just made this up cause she wanted people to be shocked?? WHo knows...all i know is i still like jo even if well, yea

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 20th 2007

cheesecakians go on the post above this for now!! too much drama here.... tho i ahte this spots lik hell!!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

the thing is, this will be hard to ignore when its more known. and people start using dumbledore for there own agendas or whetever and others will make hp something that you should be embarrassed to be associated with because some people regardless WILL make a big deal out of it.

Posted by i_had_fever_fudge_42 Oct 20th 2007

i think people are blowing this out of proportion. ok so hes gay-- personally i find this AWESOME. jk rowling shows she doesnt care about religion or politics, she cares about her ideas and creativity and shes gonna do what she wants. but is there reason to put it on the news and stuff like comcast and msn? people are such homophobes about this. and neville and hannah.... well i dont find it shocking, they both have no mom.

Posted by ohhthecheat Oct 20th 2007

Grnd3lW4Ld 7- I'm not trying to, nor do I need to factually prove that Dumbledore is Gay from information released in the past. From early on, readers have taken all of Jo's released info as Canon, and now that she presents something controversial, people are questioning the authors ABILITY TO DESCRIBE HER OWN FICTIONAL CHARACTERS?!? I'm just trying to point out two things-that evidence in past books does support Dumbledore's being gay, and that Jo did not betray any of her past writing (factually) but releasing this new information. Please try to read and comprehend comments from now on before drawing fallacious conclusions--this goes for everyone.

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

Thanks Honeydukes! I'd be happy to vent to you anytime :) and am also hear to listen!

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

thanks honey :D and im not trying to dis gays, cuz there is a kid that im cool with thats gay, but like does Rowling WANT the christains and catholics to hate her books even more?!?! the one thing that i could say that was good about harry potter was that it didnt have any gay people in it. now thats ruined

Posted by moonal Oct 20th 2007

i think ppl are upset abt 2 issues:- 1) that dumbledore is gay and 2) that this seems like smth jo just whipped out of thin air. personally, i don't give a fig what dumbledore's sexual orientation was. in fact, kudos to jo for introducing a different sexuality in the potter world. but for the 1st time ever, i fall into the 2nd category, and i think that's because i myself saw no evidence that albus might've been gay [although the point someone made a few hundred posts ago abt his friendship with grindelwald being blinded by love was an EXCELLENT point]. i think this is being compounded by the fact the entire luna/neville, luna/random scientist, neville/hannah thing. hm. while i logically know that jo doesn't need to perform any stunts to create more hype, this entire thing smacks of a publicity stunt to me.

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

Luna_Black: Apparently I'm going to have to explain to you once again. In addition to condemning homosexuality, the Bible also explicitly condones slavery (on several occasions, all throughout). If you're going to condemn Jo as a hypocrite for rejecting the Bible's words against homosexuality, you must also condemn yourself for rejecting the Bible's words of approval for slavery. The only way to escape this is if you in fact agree with the Bible that slavery is acceptable. If you don't agree with the Bible's postion on slavery, then you yourself are a hypocrite, because like Jo, you are rejecting certain teachings of the Bible--and a hypocrite one time more for condemning in Jo the behavior that you yourself are guilty of (that is, rejecting certain Biblical teachings, yet calling yourself a Christian).

Posted by Guru_Frederick_Weasley Oct 20th 2007

Wow... this is pretty shocking. i thought he was a bit queer as well, but not gay. I can imagine the big number of ladies who are pretty dissapointed with this piece of news.

Posted by BeckyWannaCuppa Oct 20th 2007

How can people say "I don't have a problem with people being gay, just with Dumbledore being gay"? It's having one view in theory, but in practice it's a whole different ball game. Everything I was saying earlier still stands; Why does it matter?! I agree with what Rotten said earlier - she had all this planned out, so it's not like she's doing it to suddenly shock people. All I'm seeing in the people posting who have a problem with Dumbledore being gay with no reasoning whatsoever - "it's ruined the books for me..." blah blah blah - is homophobic views. They don't even have anything to back it up! Also, saying that you cannot be gay and Christian is a debatable topic, and surely views of ostracizing people and hating someone for their sexuality - although I'm not a strong Christian myself - is against the basic principals of Christianity? I will always love HP and JKRs work no matter what she reveals about characters - if people don't fell the same, and are that appalled by a gay character, why are they here?! This is the 21st century, people!

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 20th 2007

hey dont mess with grind3lw4ld!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! i got ur back bruh!!!!! this IS EXACTLY THE REASON PPL AHTE HP AND NOW THEY AVTUALLY HAVE REASON TO DO SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Texaspotterfan Oct 20th 2007

Why was it necessary to know this? I mean, I'd rather not think about Dumbledore's love life, gay or straight or whatever else. I think she meant it as a giant thumbed nose to people like Laura Mallory but a lot of other conservative Christians actually like the story because its got great Christian allegories and it's all about good triumphing over evil. I mean my old Youth Minister recommended it, and we're Church of Christ! (For those of you, just a brief FYI, you can't get much more conservative.) And now the stupid media's going to make it a big story and everything. I'm okay with gay people but I'm not going to lie and say that I'm okay with homosexuality itself (and yeah, that is possible. I have a lot of gay friends) and if they find out about this it's going to really throw them for a loop. I honestly hope not a lot of people find out about this because it's just asking to make the controversy even more bitter than it was. But as for you people that are being all immature about how it "changes his whole relationship with Harry" grow up. Harry was a little boy compared to Dumbledore, and I'm sure Dumbledore thought of him that way. On a side note, I guess that means that Ian McKellen really should have taken the role then, huh?

i just read other peoples comments and i am shocked. "I cant read harry potter the same......" "this ruins dumbledore for me....". You people call yourselves FANS?????? what is the matter with you? harry potter is good the way it is. if youve liked it before, why wouldnt you like it now?? its ALWAYS been this way, we just didnt know it. omg u people make me want to break something. (to the people this does not apply to: sry for making u read this)

Posted by HollyQ Oct 20th 2007

I guess Dumbledore let his love blind him to the whole Grindelvald-is-a-psycho situation. It actually makes a lot of sense. It also partly explains why he was alone his whole life. To those saying that Dumbledore was romantically interested in Harry: That is called pedophilia, not homosexuality. Get them straight (no pun intended).

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

lol, i said you were nitpicking, you act like I attacked you. maybe you could comment on what I said instead of avoiding it by insulting me. dumbledores reluctance to go against grind is explained in the story, dont you think during that time he would have sad that he didnt because he loved him?

Posted by dancefool1 Oct 20th 2007

EXACTLY sirius! and like im not saying it ruins the book. but it kinda kills the character of dumbledore. idc if he never loved a girl or w.e. but just because you dont fall in love or w.e. doesnt mean your gay, thats the problem these days. ppl thinks something is wrong with them because they are different, SO they MUST be gay. um no.

Posted by luna_black Oct 20th 2007

ok, so what i've been trying to say through all my various comments is: i am really disappointed in JK for making that hypocrtical statement, hypocritical in saying she's a Christian, and then writng something that is NOT Christian according to the Bible. i am NOT a gay hater; i disagree with the lifestyle they choose. thepottertwins or whatever the name is is right; it is just a story, it shouldn't matter THAT much, it just caught me off guard. i could have put my words better in my first comment.. and i dunno WHY the heck Araminta keps calling me a hypocrite for something or another, but i know where i stand; i'm not trying to get her/him to understand anymore. i'm not playig this game with her/him anymore; i'm done, haters hate, i don't care. GOODBYE.

Posted by Ginny Oct 20th 2007

I support gay people... my principal was gay actually... but my image of dumby has been distorted... i always felt dumbledore was a very manly kind of person. very wise, and that all his curiosities were just part of the characters uniqueness. I liked the fact a man could be different and still extremely respected... but i wish if jo wanted dumby to be homosexual that she would of left it clear in the series... it just sort of ruins part of the book to me... i liked dumbledore because he was always extremely sensitive, but i thought of it as a special characteristic in a man, not at all that he was gay!... it scares me what might come next.... voldy falls in love... harry had a sister... hermione drank potions to be wise... o.O

Posted by ksbimagine Oct 20th 2007

I'm really disappointed. That's all I can say. I always loved to think that Dumbledore and Madam Pomfrey had a bit of a thing for each other. Don't get me wrong, tolerance is great and good and necessary for many things, but some things honestly don't need to be tolerated, nor should they be. As a reader I won't accept her "revelation" on Dumbledore. In JK's little world of HP things she kept out of the main story given to the world she can have a gay Dumbledore, but in my HP world, Dumbledore continues to be moral. I don't care that she wrote the books and that some may say that the world of Harry Potter belongs to her. It doesn't. It stopped belonging entirely to her the moment the first child read Sorcerer's Stone. My Dumbledore is not gay.

Posted by autumnwramth Oct 20th 2007

as the old saying goes, "Its not how the author interprets the book, it how the reader interprets." So all of you who are going eww, you can stop because the story is how you want it to be, JK rowlings is just another interpretation.
