More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

Umm, people, there's nothing wrong with being gay, you know. Its just another lifestyle. Anyway, it's not like Dumbledore ran around checking out guys in the books, eh? Look, even though Dumbledore is gay, it doesn't change the books. It's still the same story! And, umm, for the people that are mad at Jo for saying this, Jo didn't just randomly announce that Dumbledore was gay. She was asked if Dumbledore ever found love, and she answered. She was answering a question! So geez, people, lay off her! I think it's pretty cool that she's putting a gay character in the books. It just makes them more realistic.

Posted by gymgrl Oct 20th 2007

haha im lovin the series even more now!!!! gay guys make the best of friends.........

Posted by ohhthecheat Oct 20th 2007

I know this will psst a lot of people off and I hope it does. The general issue here is that Jo's books attracted a huge following--maybe too huge. Her complex moral and social commentary is lost to many readers. Many of you are too stupid to understand why Dumbledore being gay is an excellent narrative technique in her case. This whole case has been a 'last hurrah' for her ongoing objectives throughout the series-flawlessly introduced at a safe time in terms of publishing. I'm sad to see that her message is lost to so many. Apparently, most of you love the series for its fantasy elements and not the real world connections. I just hope that kids arent discouraged to approach the series because of the stupidity of millions of fans.

Grnd3lW4Ld, Jo doesn't need inbred fucktards like you for her fans. So by all means, burn your books and leave the site. You won't be missed. Take the other Christians with you. And Luna-Lover, you're also an idiot, if this new info about Dumbledore changes the way you feel about him. I hope our mother gets raped. And Grnd3lW4Ld, I hope your little borhter or sister gets AIDS and dies rght in front of you.

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

MosheC - you said "when I come to think about it that Dumbledore is gay because it explains why he never married" - that is exactly wht annoys me soo bad. like not tryin to fight with you, just make a point. its like so if you dont have a boyfriend/girlfrined. or you never married or w.e, the answer MUST be your gay. thats wrong. it just frustrates me how ppl think like that. not having a soul-mtae in the opposite sex doesnt automatically mean your gay.

Everything you need about the accuracy of the Bible. http://www.equip.org Look up anything you want to know in the search engine on the page. For example type in "the accuracy of the Bible" Read and click on the first 3 links. That should be all of the information you need to know.

Posted by rhapsody_en_blonde Oct 20th 2007

Well that's a charitable thing to say. Check your statement, and then your reasoning, AnyaMarcos...do they not come across as contradictory to you, too? You complain that all Christians do is "hate," and yet you're doing just the same. Follow your own advice and "Do unto others as you would have done unto you."

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

im an athiest you assuming fool. go blast religion somewhere else. Thats taken out of context, he says mutual attraction meaning what brought the together...nothing queer...

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

Reposting, as this comment was the last on the previous page: She didn't pull this out of nowhere. Very early on in Book 7 there were strong hints that Dumbledore was gay ("our mutual attraction," says Elphias Doge about there friendship--that to me was almost a confirmation). The only thing about it that should really surprise the attentive reader is that it was Grindelwald. And even that shouldn't blow you away, given that Dumbledore expressed a great deal of passion for the man, even if this passion wasn't implicitly romantic.

Posted by permafrost Oct 20th 2007

ok wow anyamarcos, let's just have horrible discussions with swearing now... that's really what we need. it's people like you that are so courageous on the internet that make me sick.

Posted by dumbledore69 Oct 20th 2007

rhapsody_en_blonde you can say whatever you like, doesn't make you any less of a bigot. disagreeing with the necessity of glbt representation and insulting glbt characters or expressing disgust of said characters is homophobic and is the sign of a bigot. you can claim it as your 'opinion' all you like, and as american you can hide behind your first amendment, but in Canada we believe in responsibility for our actions. And a large portion of what people have said here could be considered as hate speech since it incites hatred against an identifiable group. But hey if you want to be like the Westboro Baptist Church (see www.godhatesfags.com) and hide behind your 'free speech' ammendment to legitimize your right to be a bigot, go right ahead.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 20th 2007

Grnd3lW4Ld, if you don't hate gay people for religious reasons, then it means that you have had homosexual leanings yourself. Fact. And it scares you. Most acts of violence against gay people are carried out by people who are insecure about their own sexuality. Did Daddy used to touch you, Grnd3lW4Ld?

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

Autumn - First of all, you should realize that most internet sites are highly inaccurate. There are very few internet sites that contain 100% accurate information. Might I sugges "An Introduction to the Bible" by Chistian E Hauer and William A Young? AnyaMarcos - Thanks for bringing up painful memories of a friend who just died of AIDS, your post wasnt directed towards me, but I was highly offended.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

wow...youre a really messed up person...first of all, where do you get i dislike gays? just bored of flaming religion so you decided im a good target? and...my sister should get aids and die in front of me? sicko. my dad molested me? again youre just messed up, go get some morals you freak.

Posted by permafrost Oct 20th 2007

bet you would never say things like that in public, where your reputation sticks. but here, AnyaMarcos, just change your screename... aren't you brave.

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

whoa AnyaMarcos - there is noooo need. your just as bad as us for saying us christians are wrong because we have a belief. dont go and say we should all leave becuz we think homosexuality is wrong. its like saying everyone who thinks its right can just leave. everyone here is a fan, not becuz of what religion we have or dont have. and this is a book series guys. JK Rowling didnt have to make Dumbledore gay. you say she was just answering a question. you make it sound like she answed like dumbledore is a real person,

Posted by lupin11 Oct 20th 2007

ohthecheat...if your not a religious person, which you said you werent, or not a person with a great deal of knowledge about the bible and its whereabouts then your attempt at an authoritative voice on the matter makes no sense. I myself am a Christian and for the most part we Christians do in fact believe that the bible is a very straightforward "God Breathed" book. Or in other words it is an innerant work of God. Yes he used his people to write it in physical form but it is completely and utterly the work of him. This therefore, since God is omnicient and omnipotent, makes the bible absolute in our view (or most Christians anyway). If you don't believe in Christ then thats your beef but your wrong about your fundamental beliefs on our God's book that tells his story. Just thought i would let you know.

Posted by imjustamuggle Oct 20th 2007

People that are saying "JK can't do this", yes, she can. They are her stories. You think reading an entire series about tolerance of others that are different from you would've taught you something. Also, it disgusts me how people talk about Dumbledore's relationship with Harry had to be "bad" now. He is a homosexual, NOT a pedophile! People think just because Harry happens to be a male student makes it creepy...which is quite sad, actually.

Posted by Lorcan_Patrick_McCarthy Oct 20th 2007

I could care less if he's gay or straight, but I did laugh quite a bit upon hearing that he was. Yet again, along with all the other comments, if it bothers you that much that he's gay, then I guess you can't see beyond the set point. I still love the series as much as ever, maybe more because it's so diverse. AND she didn't randomly announce so, someone asked if Dumbledore had ever found true love.

Posted by sewcrazy Oct 20th 2007

" Why do children need to be sheltered from homosexuality and not heterosexuality? " WHY? Because Heterosexuality is a natural thing. It is all about reproduction! It's how we keep the earth populated. What is Gay sex for? Whatever, Dumbledore is gay, I just hope he didn't get it on with Grindelwald....

Posted by rhapsody_en_blonde Oct 20th 2007

Be careful what terms you throw around when describing people, Dumbledore. They're almost as ill-founded as your logic.

Posted by Jakeypoo Oct 20th 2007

Why couldn't someone else be gay? Like.....Aberforth!!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

she can do it, it doesnt stop it from being a bad decision.

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

To the haters: Leave, burn your books, and good riddance! Better that you reject Jo and her books than mock their message of love and tolerance by calling yourselves fans.

Posted by flyboy30 Oct 20th 2007

I've noticed a number of people who object to JK telling a young audience member (in an audience of young people) that Dumbledore is gay. I would like to address this: To tell a child that Dumbledore loved Grindlewald is no more or less than telling a child that Harry loved Ginny and in a world as perfect I hope ours can become, it would make no difference. The objection is that the issue of homosexuality automatically raises the issue of sex. You must please try to get it into your head that being gay is not all about sex - the impression given is that gay people simply rut like animals but all the noble and beautiful emotions of love, companionship and loyalty to name but a few are reserved for straight people who naturally never have sex anyway or at least it's never spoken of - but where homosexuals are concerned its all that's spoken about. I get tired of getting asked - "so how do you do it?" -"What do boys do together?" - when I would like to talk about who I love and how my heart was broken when he left - trust me sex is as much and as little to do with a gay person's life as it has to do with a straight person's life - only society places the emphasis differently. There are various reasons for this and the blame lies partly with the gay community but you have to know it a false dichotomy - you may say what you please but I will also call you out on it. It displays at best complete ignorance and at worse festering bigotry. Gay people are your teachers, your shop assistants, your doctor, your plumber, your priest, your mechanic, possibly your brother or sister and sometimes your mom or dad. They live among you - they are no different and if you cut them, they bleed - they love, they hate, they laugh and cry and sometimes, they have sex - so what - so do you (possibly) but it is far from all there is to them - gay people are just that - people - no more or less and with whom they fall in love or have consensual sex is quite frankly neither here nor there.

Posted by june_21_2003 Oct 20th 2007

Wow, I can't believe she said that...please, don't get me wrong, because I'm not against gay people. It's just that all these little kids are going to be going up to their parents and asking them what gay and sexuality is, so this is why I don't support her comment on this. But on a lighter note, I KNEW something had to be up when Dumbledore and Doge went on a trip around the world ALONE together! Wow, Laura Mallory must be ecstatic right now...the nosy girl.

Posted by weasleychick92 Oct 20th 2007

I can't believe Jo did this. I just can't believe it. Okay, no offense to anyone with that lifestyle, that's your choice and I actually support gay rights, but why is Dumbledore's sexual orientation even relevant to the stories? I mean, now everyone's going to be endlessly specualting about what those long hours with Harry in his office meant. I think it was simply teacher-to-pupil (gay people can have FRIENDS who are boys, after all), but many people will take it farther than that. And what about the little kids who read these books? They may not understand, but they might, and what are they going to think of their hero? What are all the parents going to think about their kids reading these, even if Dumbledore's romantic preferences are cleverly disguised? The subject will surely give Laura Mallory some extra ammo! I'm upset that this had to happen, but I don't blame Jo for truthfully answering someone's question. I would rather have the truth than a lie devised to make people happy. If Jo saw Dumby as gay, fine. But I will probably have to have some time to get used to the idea before I can look at the series the same again. It will come, though, with time. I love HP too much to let this change my outlook on the series. I'm just glad I'm the kind of liberal person who can take it. On another note, good for Neville, though I am a bit disappointed. I thought he and Luna would make a good couple. Though, actually, after Deathly Hallows, I could see a Luna/Dean relationship! Please, Jo?

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

ohk. here is another point. why would homosexuality make sense, when the whole point of sex is between a FEMALE and a MALE. that is how God made it. in the words of an old friend, God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.

Posted by Jakeypoo Oct 20th 2007

Why couldn't she leavee this publicity stunt at home and be happy that harry is already INSANELY popular

Posted by GinGin Oct 20th 2007

Ah, I hate it when people overreact.

Posted by luna_black Oct 20th 2007

GO HPfanx14!!!!!!!!!! YEAHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by dumbledore69 Oct 20th 2007

Heterosexuality is not natural. Reproduction is natural. The two are different concepts. Not all heterosexuals reproduce. And heterosexuality as it known today is a relatively recent institution, dating back only as far as the 1800's. Check the history of the term if you don't believe me. But sure lets show children what it means to be normal so they can start 'reproducing' on this already overpopulated planet at the ages of 14, 15 and 16. my logic is hardly ill-founded. as someone who is gay, i have witnessed firsthand the negative ramifications of homophobic and have studied the inter-related nature of various forms of oppressions. and if you're not a bigot, why do you defend the right to be one?

Posted by Araminta Oct 20th 2007

I think it would be rather dangerous to count Adam and Eve as the family model. Their children--and probably they themselves--engaged in rampant incest. That's how God made it, you might say, but it doesn't sound like a very nice family model to me.

Posted by andycaro Oct 20th 2007

Wow Flyboy!! That was awesome!! I think that you said that very well:) ear, ear!! and to the others using name calling and profanity to get your point across... please stop.

Posted by shortstuf7474 Oct 20th 2007

I agree with weasleychick92

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

HPfan think of it from the point of view that god doesnt make people, even if you belieave in god i couldnt imagine him doing something as mundane as sitting around and choosing every aspect of someones life. Many people share the belief that sexuality arises from ones experiences, not how there made. sexuality isnt all about sex, humans have sex organs designed for relationships between men and woman because thats what creates more humans, evolution takes control of that

Posted by rob1007 Oct 20th 2007

CHEESECAKIANS!!

Posted by revengeofpeeves Oct 20th 2007

I don't think any of you homophobes out there would call Dumbledore a fag to his face. I don't understand why some of you guys don't root for Voldemort instead. Even if Dumbledore was straight do you really think he would condone homophobia? You recent traitors out there might as well call him a mudblood. For those of you who say you can't re-read the books now I think you should because you obviously missed the point of Harry Potter. And I'm sure Harry wouldn't feel any different about his former headmaster.

Posted by Bikiru Oct 20th 2007

Is it bad if I'm more upset with Neville marrying Hannah? I always thought he'd go well with Luna... shows how much I know. But why are you guys saying that it's not "necessary" for Jo to say Dumbly's gay? He was in love with Grindy! That's about as necessary as Harry being with Ginny!

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

ha, exactly Jakeypoo. (and nice username, lol) it seems like she only did that to spread the publicity of harry potter again when its aready HUGE. and thanks luna_black :]

Posted by june_21_2003 Oct 20th 2007

You know, people everywhere are reacting to this; why is it so significant anyway? I know it doesn't enhance the plotline, but the media doesn't need to have a frickin field day with this information, even though it was unnecessary. I feel sorta sorry for Jo, because she is going to be tackled with a sorts of criticism now. :(

Posted by BeckyWannaCuppa Oct 20th 2007

I can understand thinking it adds nothing, that it's pointless, but not that it changes the character or books in any way at all. To me, it doesn't. If you have that much of a problem with homosexuality, then leave the site and books; you can't be a fan of something which promotes the differences in everyone and tolerance, if can't accept these concepts. And Anyamarcos: that's taking it too far. I think I gotta remind myself this debate is about a fictional character lol...and I gotta go. Bye people!

Posted by rob1007 Oct 20th 2007

wow i remember anymarcos and where are all the cheesecakians!!!!!!!!!!! i havent seen 1 for 3 days

Posted by dumbledore69 Oct 20th 2007

to any 'Adam and Eve' god made heterosexuals...have you read the bible? like REALLY read the bible? Have you not noticed that in GEN 3:16 "To the woman he said...yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you". That is listed among the PUNISHMENTS God hands out to Adam and Eve. So if you really want to go by what the bible says, then heterosexuality isn't natural, but a punishment and not a part of the original plan.

Posted by emmiiillllyyyyy Oct 20th 2007

i dont agree with this: being gay does not suit dumbledore, and it just adds a useless information about his life. besides im not sure gay ppl will like this because its kind of making a whole show of being gay. but hey if he wants to be gay, fine with me (he's a fictional character) and neville should not marry hannah. he should marry luna lovegood. its just meant to be. im just gonna keep rereading the series as if i never read this article.

Posted by luna_black Oct 20th 2007

did JK know that this would turn into this much of a disagreement?! i mean, i'm seriously stressed out, and i bet all ya'll are too. it went from shock that Dumbledore was gay to a full-blown argument about gay people and the Bible. i know i sound like a hypocrite saying that because i was arguing that earlier, but mainly to prove to Araminta why i though JK's staement was hypocritical, but i'm not going there again; we obviously don't understand what each other is saying. anyways, did she really think it would come to THIS?!

Posted by lupin11 Oct 20th 2007

revenge of peeves.....wow, ya really live in the harry potter world don't ya? why don't you call everybody deatheaters while your at it. have you thought about the idea that there are a ridiculous amount of religious harry potter fans. With this being said, something the bible is clear about is that homosexuality is wrong. Just because it says this does not in fact mean that God hates gay people or that straight people should hate or even dislike gay people. Instead, it means that it is not "of God" which is rather dangerous for people who are not "in God" or saved. I mean its part of who we are to be against it in some ways...Still though, i deffinately feel that we have a responsibility as Christians to love these people who are different from us anyway. All we can do is show Christ's light, its everybody elses responsibility to accept or decline his invitation.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

she deserves it june, she knew the media would react like this, thats why she did it.

Posted by moonal Oct 20th 2007

i really liked the points skrewt297 made in the previous page. i'm concerned that instead of generating more openness, this revelation will spark more bigotry [and look, how many ppl have been doing just that in this thread]. on a completely different note, biologically speaking, there's no "point" to homosexuality since organisms mate so they can create offspring - yet there are examples of sea life, reptiles and other creatures besides humans that are homosexual. just because something doesn't seemingly have a point doesn't mean it's wrong. nobody wakes up one day and decides they're going to be gay, it's genetically programmed. and for all the bible-toting hp fans, just think abt it in this way: you believe god made all living creatures, therefore that same god provided all living things with the dna in their bodies. HENCE, god programmed homosexuals to be homosexuals, so why're you still arguing about this? it's pointless.

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

ohk, lets say God isnt who made humans. how come homosexuality hasnt been around for a lot longer, how come there isnt more of them? and if there was more homos there would be a LOT less ppl in the world because they cannot reproduce. i just dont see how homosexuality is significant.
