More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

OK. I can see the big deal about dumbledore but 1300 plus some comments!? wow. yes, dumbledore is gay. This doesn't change anything. we had the revelation after we knew the character. He always has been gay. He's still the same character. If you guys are going to let however many years you've read the series change your opinion of him just because he is interested in the same gender, shame on you.

O_____O Alright, I have absolutely nothing against gay/lesbian/bi people, but um, this is really, REALLY disturbing. I never thought Jo would have any gay characters in the books because young children also read them, and they might not be mature enough to not freak out or something. Siriusly. This just like totally ruins the whole series for me if it's true... I hope that like, tomorrow or something, Jo will just say, "Haha, I was joking!! AND YOU IDIOTS ALL FELL FOR IT!!! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!!" or something. O___O;;;

Because they have just as much of a right to say what they want as anyone else does. I do agree that bigotry is un-necessary; I don't agree, however, that differently-believing people should be stifled. For one thing, it's better to have them out in the open than to have them work underground. In addition, open dialogue is always a good thing; it never hurts to learn where someone else is coming from. In closing, I don't agree with the animosity and hatred. I am a Christian, and I do try to show love to others (except rapists and murderers, of course). I was in theatre all throughout high school, so I associated with and befriended several gays–and they were some of the nicest people I've ever met. Also, as I stated in a previous post, my aunt and her best friend are both gay, and I love them very much.

*waves the victory flag* Mwhaha, I shipped Dumbledore/Grindlewald from the moment I put down DH. Happiness, much? However, I have to say that some of the comments on here have made me feel sick. I can't believe we still live in a world where people don't agree with the gay lifestyle (I hate that word anyway, it makes it seem like gay and lesbian people live a COMPLETELY different life to straight people, just because they are attracted to the same gender), and where people quote the Bible and whatever else when I'm pretty sure they don't agree/follow all the stuff in their, and that this news has 'ruined' the books. If you're intolerant, ignorant and prejudice, get the hell away from books that promote tolerance and acceptance to all. ^^

WHATS WITH ALL THE ARGUING ABOUT THE BIBLE! WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THIS!

HPfanx14 - Homosexuality has been around for a long time. It dates back to the Greek and Roman Empire as well as in Egypt. It was accpet. The reason that it frowned upon today is because our current social stereotypes (within the last few hundred years) have dictated. Homosexuals until very recently have been afraid to "come out". Current studies show that at least 5-10% of the earth's population is homosexual.

any cheescakians here? look. being gay is ok. i'm straight, but i'm not narrow minded. i think gay, leisbian, and bi is OK. i kinda always pictured dumbledore as straight, but I guess bi would be suiting for him, but...gay? it somewaht makes sense. i agree with GinGin

Posted by Scooby Oct 20th 2007

Brilliant! hehe. I think it's fab dumbeldore being gay! Who cares? I think people might be having a hard time accepting it becuse people have the opinion of Gay men being really weak and girly, which dumbeldore was not. It's just JK trying to challenge peoples perspectives, it is really odd though lol. Go Gwindledore fanfiction! There's going to be sooo many parodys taking the psst out of it. I can't wait for the 6th film where every time Dumbeldore does something i'm just going to giggle. It's so weird imagining him as gay but I don't care. I'll get used to it.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

well they can reproduce, just not naturally. Why not more of them? most stats ive seen show about 1/10 people are gay. I dont really know how to answer that. well im not trying to argue why homosexuality is significant, im just saying this whole thing is completely random and pointless and people will look at the books differently...I have lost all but every bit of my respect for jo

Posted by revengeofpeeves Oct 20th 2007

Hey if it's good enough for Da Vinci than it's good enough for Dumbledore.

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

the thing is, the fact dumbledore is gay is a BIG deal. --wondermus22 so if homosexuality is supposed to be something normal. how come soo many ppl are scared of coming out of the closet? and if you say that its because ppl will not like them, publicity, w.e. why would it be like that if homosexualitu was normal?

Posted by moonal Oct 20th 2007

HPfanx145: it HAS been around for a long time. it's extremely prevalent in greek and roman mythology in fact, which pre-dates christianity. homosexuality wasn't taboo in those older cultures [unlike present society], which is why it might seem like a "new" thing.

Posted by tomatosoup Oct 20th 2007

I don't see how this information can be viewed anymore 'pointless' than who Neville marries. It's a sad reflection of the society we live in, I suppose. I mean, if JKR talked of Dumbledore's love for a girl in his youth, it would be accepted without question and would be interesting. But a boy? Oh gosh, it's absolutely stupid for her to mention it and nobody needs to know, right? Sometimes I lose faith in the human race when I see how people still treat homosexuality.

Posted by emmiiillllyyyyy Oct 20th 2007

ok and ppl dont need to say theyre not homophobic. youre allowed to think dumbledore shouldnt be gay and not be homophobic. im not and i still think dumbledore shouldnt be gay. it doesnt fit with his character. but if jo wants it to be that way, shes the author and i respect her decision. just not about neville and hannah :)

Posted by xserendipityx Oct 20th 2007

I love this twist, actually I suspected it but I love that she has stated it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with different sexualities - whatever suits your boat. Why do people discriminate against gays? I'm straight but I wouldn't look down on someone just because they aren't. It is just sexuality, how is that going to matter at all in other areas of effectiveness or achievement? I'm so proud of Jo for this, I think this will be the beginning. What a way to make a political statement huh! Having sold 300 millions books in the past 10 years, and having Dumbledore as the most powerful character in the whole series, this just proves sexuality doesn't affect the a person's character or being; Dumbledore is still great regardless. I hope this will be the beginning of lessons for children that everyone is equal regardless of color or sexuality, only who you are matters. Thanks Jo.

rhapsody_en_blonde well then i apologize for calling you a bigot, not for calling anyone who has expressed open hated/dislike/disgust of the glbt community. But i do believe such people need to accept the fact that they are bigots. Hatred is hatred. Regardless of what it is based on. And i don't believe that speech or acts that further hatred should be tolerated. Obviously you cannot force someone to accept a different opinion, but simply saying "its gross" or "its bad for children" is, to me, just as bad as saying "women belong in the kitchen and shouldn't be allowed to read". The opinions are uneducated. Why is it gross? Because someone says it is? No, thats not sufficient. I can say i find heterosexuals gross and will have to explain why. So why can be bigoted opinions be justified by free speech? If someone can find documented, unbiased, evidence that having a gay hero is bad in children's literature than I will be glad to engage in a debate with them. But i however feel that the majority of arguments here lack any intellectual depth and shall therefore take my leave.

Posted by chrisgorman02 Oct 20th 2007

this doesn't change anything. He's still my favorite character ever. I must admit that I was shocked when I heard it, but....I mean we heard this revelation after he had lived his life and after we had loved the character for so many years. He's always been gay, we just never knew. He's still the same person. His sexual orientation isn't relevant to the series AT ALL so I don't know why reading the series would change. It's just another subplot, like neville becoming a herbology teacher. Nothing has changed for me.

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

Homosexuality hasn't been normal since the social stereotypes were placed on society. More and more people ARE starting to come out. They feel more comfortable in today's society. It is becoming more of the norm. There are court documents from fuedal France that show two men's names on leases. The social stigma placed on gays and lesbians started only a few hundred years ago. Homosexuality is well documented throughout the world well before Christ.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

ok guys, like rob said this isnt about the bible or if being gay is right, its about jk messing with our views of very important characters!

Posted by Nameless Oct 20th 2007

Why is everyone being so stupid about this? You can be Christian and be completely for gays and gay rights (as a matter of fact, that's how I am). And saying "it's not natural" is just the stupidest thing ever, since there are other species that engage in homosexual activities (bonobos are just one example). Even if it WASN'T natural, there is no logic behind being against something simply because it is not natural. Should people not wear glasses if they need to see? Should we just not bathe or brush our teeth because it's not natural? Banning ONE "unnatural" thing means banning ALL "unnatural" things. The "Adam and Steve" thing is one of the most idiotic statements I've ever heard. If you were to go back and time and see Adam and Eve, they probably would have been the same race. Does this mean interracial couples are living in sin because they do not live Adam and Eve? Should we go around saying "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Sakura"? Even if you believe being gay is a sin (which I don't), I don't understand why you wouldn't be offended by the cursing in the books? Why wouldn't you be offended by the witchcraft? Jesus preached about love and was never quoted saying ANYTHING about homosexuality (I know that it is mentioned in the Bible, but the English version of the Bible has different wording than the original Hebrew one). He just wanted all of us to get along with one another and love one another. And, hypothetically speaking, if being gay IS a sin, then it would not be held against you moreso than something like lying or swearing because God holds all sins to be equal. And to the non-Christians who are bashing Christianity as a whole, you are just as bad as those who are bashing homosexuality. Not all Christians believe the same things and not all of us are idiots. Just saying.

Posted by Playwright06 Oct 20th 2007

ok people, this is getting ridiculous. can we please be mature harry potter fanatics and accept the fact that are dear, darling, deranged dumbledore swings to the other side? besides...think of all the interesting shipping that could come of this. kind of scary, but definetly interesting. and by the way (i dont remember who said that there was no basis for the claim) but there is a very vague reference to Dumbledore being gay in the seventh book. if you think about it, when harry is reading the article about rita skeeter's "The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore" there is a part in the interview where rita quotes a part from a chapter describing harry and dumbledore's relationship as "unhealthy and even sinister." (DH Ch.1) the possibility exists that rita had dug something up about dumbledore's sexuality. just thought i'd mention that.

haha revenge of peeves, i like your posts. may i add: if it was good enough for shakespeare and oscar wilde, then it's definitely good for dumbly ;)

Posted by HPfanx14 Oct 20th 2007

yah, thats how i feel grindwald. the only thing that realllllly bugs me if that if he doesnt like a girl, that he must be gay. and ohk, myy badddd everyone, im not real into the history of homosexuality. so they have been around forever. them why is it that its still frowned apon ?

Posted by lupin11 Oct 20th 2007

the bible says its a sin bro

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

Thats a good question HPfanx14 - one that I have been asking all my life.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 20th 2007

why is she youre hero? because out of nowhere she pulls out that one of here characters is attracted to men so hp is in the news again? i think she got over loaded with fame at the release of dh and now that its wearing off she needs this to satisfy it again...

Posted by revengeofpeeves Oct 20th 2007

I don't understand what everyone means when they say that they don't think Dumbledore would be a homosexual. Is it because he doesn't have a lisp and a pink t-shirt? Come on people. Oh no Dumbledore is gay....everyone return your fake beards we have to be somebody different for halloween now. Give me a break.

Posted by Scooby Oct 20th 2007

What on earth are people talking about when they say being gay doesn't fit with dumbledore's character? lol, what on earth do you imagine a gay dumbeldore to be? Prancing in his office to Celeine Dion, telling snape his hair looks bad in a gay voice? Occasionally expressing the thought that Gilderoy Lockheart had the right idea about those pink robes? Or perhaps bopping round hogsemede to Duran Duran with a glass of sex on the beach. in one hand..oh somebody write a fanfiction about THAT! On the other hand, while reading all these comments it might not have been such a good idea for JK to announce Dumbeldore was gay in America, it's still such a big thing over there. Why, I don't know.

Posted by Nameless Oct 20th 2007

HPfan, the morality of something cannot be judged by whether or not it is frowned upon. People used to frown upon women wearing pants. People used to frown upon biracial children. Some people frown on Harry Potter. Your reasoning is very illogical. Do you do everything that everyone else does? Of course not. So why should you believe something is wrong simply because other people do? Besides, in Roman culture (and I believe Greek, but I can't be sure), as well certain societies mentioned in the Bible, homosexuality was the norm. Romans did not have such rigid sexual orientations like "straight" and "gay". You could call them bisexual, I guess, but I think pansexual would be a better term (though pansexual is a less commom word).

Right on Scoob......someone give that pup a snack.

Top 1380! My eyes bugged out a mile. I did not expect that. Weird. When my kids read the books, I won't tell them that. I will try my best to forget this. I never would have guessed.

LOL! And every time he walks down the road the Beegees just start playing...lol. Can't get the image of Dumbeldore carrying a paris hilton dog in a bag out of my head. lol. For those who think i'm being bigoted, i'm not, i'm just trying to enforce to the stupidity of Gay sterotypes. Go Gwindledore!

the cheesecakians are on the top post people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Nameless Oct 20th 2007

You can't make people gay. Why would you want revenge on JKR for having her character be homosexual? Not cool.

Posted by i_am_hermione Oct 20th 2007

Why did she have to tell us? :/ :( :P :[

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

Scoob you are too funny! Love it.

Posted by harry8voldemort Oct 20th 2007

my theory Grindelwald gay with friend who he betryed dark lord voldemort is a dark lord so does that mean he' was gay with a betrayed friend... snape? lucius?

Posted by chrisgorman02 Oct 20th 2007

yeah guys seriously. Jk rowling doesn't want more attention, she's not kidding, dumbledore is gay, Neville married hannah. this isn't about right or wrong or biblical references. jk rowling's series is about tolerance and acceptance so, why should gays be excluded? i understand that younger fans won't understand it, but lets be honest, the last books in the series are more for older fans. jkr is trying to be trying to be realistic. She always has been. please stop debating here and just accept the fact that dumbledore is gay. He's still the same loveable character. Just because his coming out was after his death, does not mean anything! Reading the books won't change because there is NO sexual innuendo anywhere! No encouragement of being homosexual, just like there is no encouragement of practicing witchcraft. Please don't be the next generation of laura mallory's against homosexuals!

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 20th 2007
