More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

This totally made my day!

Posted by blondeffulgence Oct 19th 2007

Dumbledore's here, he's queer; get used to it! (well, he's not here anymore, but that's besides the point) Also, my friend says: SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE, NOW WITH 100% MORE HATE CRIME!

Posted by snarkeh Oct 19th 2007

...Er...Voldemort doesn't love.

Posted by lydjackson Oct 19th 2007

In the thing when it says JK I tohught it meant just kidding. I hoped it meant just kidding. I really just hate that he's gay. Yippee for Dumbldore the first GAY headmaster of Hogwarts. I officially like Snape better.

Posted by ellenmarit Oct 19th 2007

I always felt like Rita Skeeter was implying something in her article. Everything is illuminated now! Seriously though, I love gay men. This really completes me. (and if you're a homophobe, hold your tongue because you're just as bad as a racist.)

Posted by Lillian_Potter Oct 19th 2007

oh man! i got a ticket, but because i live on the west coast, my parents said i couldn't go! sounds like it was a blast! i could have gotten a signed book, but hey, biology test instead. *sigh* btw, i can't believe the dumbledore thing. is that a hoax?

Posted by Quantummilkshake Oct 19th 2007

okay to all you people who are saying they don't like the fact that Dumbledore's homosexual because "it's a children's novel". Why do children need to be sheltered from homosexuality and not heterosexuality?

Posted by dannyrob15 Oct 19th 2007

the battlefield is slain with the the blood of peacocks..

Posted by slytherinsgirl4ever Oct 19th 2007

Quantummilkshake - Jo said previously that Voldemort loved nobody but himself... although Bella was inlove with him. He had an inablity to care about anyone but himself. As far as the Dumbledore thing... it personally see it as a joke on her part... but who knows... I cant see it purely because of what the two characters stood for... Dumbledore stood for everything Grinwald did not. It just doesnt seem plausable. Anyways... NL/HA thing doesnt really suprise me... The Petunia thing was kinda fun to know... either way I could have gone without knowing any of this info... the Petunia is the most intresting. On a side note... Mugglenet! Why did I just get spammed with abunch of offers!!!!!

Posted by soccertreize07 Oct 19th 2007

I'm not going to lie....this is pretty diappointing to me.

Posted by phoenixsong78 Oct 19th 2007

Also at the book signing a little seven year old asked what charms Aberforth performed on the goat. J.K. quickly dodged answering that one-lol!!!

Posted by jedi2814 Oct 19th 2007

The more I think about it what upsets me the most is that it never came out before. If it had this series wouldn't have made past PS/SS or whatever book we were on when it came out. JK knew it would effect the sale of the book and doesn't lay it on us until she's already made her millions; what's it matter now? Although, I hear a bunch of WB execs going: "She did NOT just say that".

Posted by MUHAHAHA Oct 19th 2007

i have to agree with the spam thing........it's bugging me very badly ever since the first day, and my computer is bought in 1999, so it's a bit problem........it's very slow, it has trouble load MuggleNet..............wi th all the ads........

Posted by wicked87 Oct 19th 2007

MUHAHA, I'm sorry if I made you sound homophobic...I actually don't know what u posted, but I know some people are only joking. I don't want to attack anyone here, sorry if i misinterpreted something wrong.

Posted by Chonphlyxion Oct 19th 2007

About Dumbledore.....Wow. That ruined his whole character for me. It doesn't make any sense.

Posted by lydjackson Oct 19th 2007

I was literally cold with shock after reading this. I wonder who knew about this? Harry would have a field day if he found out. Another thing Dumbledore never told him. Oh god, i can just see the conversation.

Posted by dannyrob15 Oct 19th 2007

muhahaha MUHAHAHA

If I may be permitted to ride the fence a bit, I'd like to say that although I believe fervently in people's rights to marry whom they please, and the rights of authors to imagine their literary worlds without others telling them how they *should* have imagined them, I'm not without sympathy for anyone who has a specific picture in their mind about a character, and then the picture's reality changes with the author's next book or pres conference. We cannot help but put the stamp of our own perspectives on the characters we read, and it can be a jolt to find out one's vision of a character turns out to be different than the author's. I myself was a little bummed in Book 7 when I realized Dumbledore had a youthful vision that Muggles needed to be protected from themselves...forcibly... but I took a deep breath, read the rest of the book, and actually appreciated that JKR's imagination assigned human dimensions to all the characters, and that Dumbledore grew as a person just as did many of the people I know in real life.

Posted by Quantummilkshake Oct 19th 2007

haha. yeah. this is good, totally interesting info. it just holds no real practicality to the plot anymore. Oh well, I still love knowing Dumbledore was gay! I wonder if there are any more gay characters.. *thinks* Oh, and what ever happened to that "highly confidential" information about Hogwarts spouses we were supposed to learn about?

Posted by Kafnut Oct 19th 2007

I can't believe how many bigots call themselves Harry Potter Fans! The fact that a character is gay, doesn't changes anything. Get over it!

Posted by DailyProphetAce Oct 19th 2007

The Vultures would like me to post on their behalf a request to the mugglecasters. They kindly ask that the issues of Dumbledore's sexuality 'not be shied away from' on the show. It is a very hot topic for the fandom at this time and they would like to see it get it's fair share of discussion.

Posted by linda Oct 19th 2007

I agree with everybody who has stated that it doesn't matter that he was gay. So what? Everybody can love whoever they choose to love. He was still an AMAZING character. His sexuality is not going to change that. People need to stop being so narrow minded. Shesh.

you guys see this yet? the rest of the questions:: http://hpana .com/news.20228.html

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 19th 2007

oh my goodnes...i'm just totally in shock...speechless...i don't think i'll look at dumbledore the same way every again...wow...but the question is ...why did jk make him gay? but...i'm happy about neville/hannah...didn't see that one coming...

Posted by fantfreak Oct 19th 2007

I LOVE YOU JKR! AHAHAHHAAHA. and stop arguing you twits. the wiz society is supposed to be realistic.

Posted by lydjackson Oct 19th 2007

Ha. Potter Puppet Pals takes a whole new meaning,

Posted by iheartmugglecast Oct 19th 2007

Wow! Dumbledore was gay! That's so unexpected! Though, now I think about it, Jo never mentioned anything about his lovelife. Ohhh... now he and McGonagall can't get together! Poop. My favourite ship! lmao Neville and Hannah... hmmm. Luna and Neville were better. I always thought that Petunia was going to say something like that. I think she's all right underneath.

Posted by lisamz Oct 19th 2007

If I had to think about it (and who did before this?), I would think Dumbledore being single is further evidence of his brilliance.

Posted by dolfinhawaii Oct 19th 2007

OMG how gross is that. I can't belive it! I won't believe it! As andrew said about the release date, it CAN'T be TRUE ladies and gentleman! Sure it would explain why Dumbledore went along with Gellerts crazy plans but why did it have to be this reason? why couldn't dumbledore just be stupid? why gay? WHY??? JO I'M VERY ANGRY!!

Posted by dannyrob15 Oct 19th 2007

i don't appreciate this suddeness for dumbly to be gay. i guess killing grindelwald was a way of showing his love for him. idk. i will look at dumbly's dusty face and think: did he ever rape harry? did he take pics of harry and hide them in his 50 foot long beard? what if he shaved his whiskers off? would there be a tatoo of harry doing the samba? gay ppl. are taking over the world. but we will stand and fight.

Posted by Daniel_Radcliffe_Is_My_Husband Oct 19th 2007

HOLY CRAP. DUMBLEDORE IS GAY?! OMG WTF? JO? YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

Posted by muggle1963 Oct 19th 2007

I think this is some kind of lame joke....I can't look at Dumbledore the same way anymore. JKR is pulling our leg...

Posted by ljd70 Oct 19th 2007

OK-I think she can stop talking now. She is getting in the realm of TMI (too much information).

Posted by HP_4EVER Oct 19th 2007

OMG NO fudge WAY!!!!!!

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 19th 2007

uh....danny...yeah...that 's a little too much information if you please...lol jk....what do you think about this? and what else it up dannyo?

Posted by Sonja Oct 19th 2007

Dannyrob15, while I show sympathy for people who don't envision Dumbledore the way JKR does, I have neither sympathy nor respect for people who speculate that being gay means one is a child molester. Your posting was sick, and it was fabricated entirely out of your own imagination. Think about what you're saying about yourself and the workings of your own mind when you spew such hatred! (Here's Dannyrob15's post: i don't appreciate this suddeness for dumbly to be gay. i guess killing grindelwald was a way of showing his love for him. idk. i will look at dumbly's dusty face and think: did he ever rape harry? did he take pics of harry and hide them in his 50 foot long beard? what if he shaved his whiskers off? would there be a tatoo of harry doing the samba? gay ppl. are taking over the world. but we will stand and fight.)

Posted by ellenmarit Oct 19th 2007

Really, this isn't a big deal. I do plead with you, ppl like dolfinhawall and dannyrob15, to be a little more compassion. My cousin is gay, and I have to watch her suffer every time my family starts making jokes. Be human.

Posted by Mayrelle012 Oct 19th 2007

dolfinhawaii i think you're being a retard. :]

Posted by mugglescene Oct 19th 2007

OH MY GOD, LAURA MALLORY.

Posted by qurrat Oct 19th 2007

OH GOD. DUMBLE DORE AND GAY.

Posted by HermioneIsMyHero27 Oct 19th 2007

omg. jkr can put twists in a story even after it's been written.

Posted by lydjackson Oct 19th 2007

Yeah, Sonja, but how many times did Hermione assure Harry that Dumbledore loved him. I mean does this not seem kind of creepy to you?

Posted by Daniel_Radcliffe_Is_My_Husband Oct 19th 2007

Dumbledore is gay? What next, Trelawney is in love with Filch?

Posted by Catie Oct 19th 2007

dannyrob- I imagine that in Jo's world (which is the only real canon) Albus Dumbledore has been gay his whole life. Not sudden at all. And the answer to all of your questions would be no. Also, I'm fairly certain gay people aren't trying to take over the world... With the exception of Alexander the Great, of course. He was trying to take over the world.

Posted by dannyrob15 Oct 19th 2007

sorry sonja, just a little surprised that dumbledore was gay. i pictured him as a mentor, not a gay mentor. oh hey honey! nm. hbu?

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 19th 2007

lol lydjackson...that's interesting...:p

Posted by ellenmarit Oct 19th 2007

Catie you made me laugh really hard!

Posted by lydjackson Oct 19th 2007

lol lydjackson...that's interesting...:p What exactly are you talking about? Dumbledore being gay. Indeed that is very interesting.

Posted by Angelic_Crisis Oct 19th 2007

I see so many comments about how "unnecessary" it was to assign this (Dumbledore's sexuality) information to a character. Though the reason we all loved the Harry Potter books differs from person to person; the series would not be nearly as popular if J.K. Rowling DIDN'T put all this thought into her characters. She found the information unnecessary enough to the general plot that she left it out of the books, but assigning the sexuality to him is just a sign of exactly how wonderful a writer she is. Her characters have depth because they were made to come alive, and Dumbledore had a sexuality because if he HAD been alive he would have - even if it never came into play. I'd place a bet that all her characters were assigned a sexuality, or at least have one in her own mind. As for the nature of his sexuality, if it bothers you I think you need to pull yourself out of the dark ages. Furthermore, if you alienate every series or writer that pushes against the boundaries of normalcy then you're going to be left with nothing worth reading. At least not if you're interested in the sci-fi/fantasy genres.
