More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

I was reading a post by Harriet_Lily_Snape and could not resist commenting. It is one of the most bigotted and intolerant thing I have ever heard. *All stereotypes are born in truth* What kind of perverted world are you living in? All stereotypes are based in bigotry, not fact. To say that shows that you live in your own racist, homophobic world. You ought not be posting on a website that is for sensible people. Please leave.

Posted by chommy Oct 20th 2007

@hpfreak91: When I read that, I have to tell you I was laughing. There are millions of reasons it's gross. And also, please don't see me as a homo-hater. I don't hate them, I don't like them. But what bothers me is the fact that Jo gave people a reason to make fun of HP Fans. Now I'm being called gay by friends and brothers. And this is what's making me like the series less and less.

Posted by kagnomi Oct 20th 2007

I take back what I said about Rowling not having the guts to write in a gay character. YEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Score one for the rainbow team! And this just renewed my hopes of her one day revealing that Remus is bi and was in fact once in love with Srirus Black. And I can't really be called delusional (as much) for the seed of doubt has be planted. Muahahaha. I knew it. Dumbledore was meant to be like that.

Posted by Wolfstar Oct 20th 2007

Oh my God! It's so weird, I've never even thought to question Dumbledore's sexuality, so this came as quite a shock! Kudos to JK though. Give the fundamentalist crazies something else to b**** about! Yay for gay Dumbledore!

Posted by dumbledoreswoolnsox_22 Oct 20th 2007

Okay that's cool. This really doesn't change anything, but what really bugs me is that J.K. just kind of threw this out there. It just seems like she might have made that up last minute, and decided to say it. And as for the Neville thing, I could've sworn she said he and luna married in one interview. Then said Luna married someone else in the next. whatever...

Posted by Spenciman Oct 20th 2007

Even though Dumbledore is gay i strongly doubt he had sexual feelings towards any of the school children also i like to feel alot of his feelings ended when he defeated Grindevald

Posted by candygrl Oct 20th 2007

I also don't understand how this "ruins" the series for people! If anything, it's only made me revere the books and Jo more. They are about so many bigger things than a character's sexual orientation. I just cannot understand how this would completely change a person's views on Dumbledore. For me, it just helps explain some of his actions (I DONT mean anything Harry related... gays are not pedophiles) and adds more depth to his oceans of radness. =D I think this is like... a cleansing of the fandom. ok i don't mean "cleansing" in a bad way..... I just mean that, the one's who will continue to stay with Jo and the novels see them as more than just one character's homosexuality. yeesh.

Posted by KuisinebyKaren Oct 20th 2007

While I was initially shocked by the revelation, I'm not altogether surprised. I have known many mentors & teachers who resemble Albus Dumbledore. Being gay does not mean you're a monster or a pedofile. As for the "christian" comment from JKR, that offends me. I am a christian and have always defended the HP books. I cannot judge anyone else but myself. Does this change the way I feel about the books? NO. I love Harry, Ron & Hermoine. I love what they do & what they stand for. What's right instead of what's easy. These characters have become almost real for me. I cried when Fred & Hegwig & Moody were killed. I felt the same anger & emotion Molly Weasley did when she battled Bellatrix. There are bigger things in the world. The Potter world mirrors that which we all live in. Can't you see that??? So Dumbledore is/was gay. Who are we to judge? Enjoy the books. They are brilliant. As for being christian, we are taught to hate the sin & forgive the sinner, which WE ALL ARE! Tolerance people. Tolerance. We are all sinners. Remember that.

Fan Fiction - Laura Mallory and the Broomcloset of Gays. Laura sits in front of the computer, coffee bubbling in her "Harry is the Devil" mug. She's anxiously checking her message boards to see if her plot to rid the world of Harry Potter has begun to take hold. Alas, no hits. "Oh well," she thinks. "Tomorrow is another day." Laura heads over to CNN.com, and thats when she sees it. "ROWLING OUTS DUMBLEDORE" is briefly seen before she spits out her coffee all over the screen. She can't believe her eyes as she shakes with glee. "I've won!" She hears a voice behind her, "Mom?" "Not now son, I'm busy." Now up on her computer desk chair, Laura begins spinning around and around and around. "I've won, I've won, I've won." "But mom, this is important." "Don't you understand? God has given me the keys to take down Harry Potter. Dumbledore is gay! Witches and Homosexuals horray!" "But mom, I'm gay!" Duh!

Posted by peppermint_toad Oct 20th 2007

i have to say that i saw absolutely no connections to the gay thing in the book. i always just admired DD for proving that you don't have to be gay to be eccentric in a lovable way, and that straight guys are just as capable as gay guys at expressing emotions, especially love. this is how i saw DD. and when he was explaining to harry that he didnt go to kill g-wald because he didnt want to find out if he, DD, had killed ariana, DD was being completely honest with harry b/c he owed it to him, and i believe that was DD's reason for not going to kill g-wald. i just cant find where she got DD being gay from. i just wont be able to believe it, and i'm sorry (not really), but DD will always be an example of a really cool straight guy to me.

Posted by weasleychick92 Oct 20th 2007

Spenciman, I agree. I don't think Dumbledore had sick feelings for Harry or any other student. I think he lost his ability for romantic love when he had to defeat Grindelwald. You know, gay people can love other people, like Dumbledore loved Harry, without it being gross. Dumbledore cared about Harry, but only as somewhat of a son.

Posted by 62442 Oct 20th 2007

Alot of people here seem to be saying things like "why would Jo say this" and "the majority of the fandom wont liek this" And admitedly there are alot of poepl that wont like it. BUt I saw one comment where someone said no one would like it, and all i hacve to say, is that there would be no gay fanfic out there if the whole fandom wwas as narrow minded as this person.

Posted by revengeofpeeves Oct 20th 2007

Well don't get me wrong FerN, I'm not calling you a bigot or anything. But you just used the word benevolent to describe his character. Well benevolent means to be marked by or disposed to doing good. Before we found out he was homosexual we all adored Dumbledore because he was the main reason the wizarding world was saved (he is a fictional character after all). And now that this revelation was presented to us a lot of people are saying that it's not the same Dumbledore anymore. But because he has a different sexuality than most people? Should we all just forget all the other things about Dumbledore that we adored?

wondermus 22, you rock!

Posted by hedwighummer Oct 20th 2007

Hmmm...Curious, very curious. It bugs me when people say the "Harry-in-the-office" jokes. I mean, I don't know much about being gay, but just becuase someone's gay doesn't mean they are perverted. I mean, it's just like liking a different kind of person. If Dumbledore was straight, and called Pansy Parkinson into his office, it doesn't mean he's a perv and LIKES Pansy. So what's the difference if he's gay? It just means he likes other guys instead of girls. It doesn't mean he likes random little boys. So, people, jeez, you're overreacting to this news WAY TOO MUCH. On a brighter note, I'm happy for Neville, and the Petunia thing was too sweet and/or bloody brilliant for words. Anyways, in short, chill people. He's still the same old Dumbledore. So let's all go out and buy him a nice pair of wool socks. I'm off to the clothing store [yes, at 10:30 at night]. Over and out.

Posted by kagnomi Oct 20th 2007

Actually, scratch that. I didn't really think so. I mean, it's not as shocking as if finding out Ron was gay but more shocking than finding out Sirius was gay. I always thought Voldy and Dumbledore were asexual. Not really liking anyone 'that' way. Hmmmm....I wonder about his brother. And does this mean Grindlewald is gay too????? Now the 7th book has been cast into new light. Hahaha. I can hear Laura Mallory shrieking already. Hey lady, here's an idea, if you don't like it DON'T READ IT! How many times has she tried banning them already? I hope her kids grow up gay and avid HP fans just to get her back a little.

O_______O OMG! Thats freaking AWSOME! *happy dance*

Posted by hpfreak91 Oct 20th 2007

"@hpfreak91: When I read that, I have to tell you I was laughing. There are millions of reasons it's gross." and im laughing at you. =] please feel free to name those million reasons.

Posted by 62442 Oct 20th 2007

wondermus22- that was hilarious!!!!! none of my friends belived me wehn i said that JO said Dumbledore was gay. Of course, they might not have belived me because I was always hoping at least one character was gay. Anyway, for a long time, I have seen Jo as a wonderful role model, and her saying this, just brings her up a few more notches. Tolarance! ANd to all those people saying how they are surprised Dumbledore didnt molest Harry -stop stereotyping! Its wrong!

Posted by peppermint_toad Oct 20th 2007

i wish she had said that draco was gay instead. that would totally have made my day. think of the posts we would be seeing from outraged fangirls...

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

marisa91 & weasleychick92 - Thank you, thank you. Stay turned for Part 2 when Laura finds Harry Potter books under her son's bed. GASP!

Posted by weasleychick92 Oct 20th 2007

I just know Laura Mallory is dancing with glee over this revelation...well, lady, you see, we Harry Potter fans are rather loyal to our fandom. So don't expect to turn people from Harry Potter to your side just because of this announcement. We will unite if need be. Loyal fans will stand behind our hero.

Posted by Harriet_Lily_Snape Oct 20th 2007

So, my big question is, if JKR felt so strongly about making DD gay, why not say it in the book? After all the stuff she went through with the other topics in the story, why be a coward and wait months after the book is released and also not even mention it in the story. Wouldn't all the little gay boys who read HP like to have a gay hero? JKR never intended to write this until recently. People have to understand this.

Posted by revengeofpeeves Oct 20th 2007

I can only imagine the kind of questions JK is going to be getting at the next reading she does. Who wants to bet someone asks her what base Dumbledore has gotten to?

Posted by snipesnape626 Oct 20th 2007

hey guys i have a question... who is this laura mallory you are talking about> the only real thing that i have inferred from reading these comments is that she is some crazy lady that does not like harry potter. is there more depth to her being or did i already state the main point of her?

Posted by chflitwick Oct 20th 2007

There you go again Harriet_Lily_Snape! Spewing your intolerant "Wouldn't all the little gay boys who read HP like to have a gay hero." It just disgusts me.

Posted by hpfreak91 Oct 20th 2007

Harriet_Lily_Snape - way to be a fan. call the author a coward. nice work.

Posted by weasleychick92 Oct 20th 2007

Nope, snipesnape626, you pretty much summed it up. Laura Mallory is a lady who has tried to get HP books out of her local library for a loooong time. But she never wins. And she never will, ha!

Posted by Harriet_Lily_Snape Oct 20th 2007

But it's true. Wouldn't the gay kids have liked to know there was a gay character in the story? chflitwick --- You need to take a chill pill sweetie.

Posted by candygrl Oct 20th 2007

snipesnape626: you pretty much covered it. ;D she went to court a while ago trying to ban HP books in school libraries, but lost, and has been going on crazy rampages for a while now. because HP supposedly promotes witchcraft. :P

Posted by Layla_DA Oct 20th 2007

When I first heard the news of Dumbledore I have to admit I was really taken aback, only for the reason that it was completely unexpected. However, my opinion on Dumbledore does in no way change, his sexuality isn't the basis of the books and I don't think It should be blown out of proportion etc. Gay -Straight WHO CARES, I'm Dumbledores girl through and through :) RIP to the greatest wizard who ever lived.

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

As a gay growing up with HP, it didnt really matter if there was a gay hero/role model for me. But thats just my opinion.

Posted by chflitwick Oct 20th 2007

maybe some would. But that's not the point. the point is you clump all of the "little gay boys" into one. You don't say "well why didn't she put in a black her so all the little black boys can have a hero"

Posted by revengeofpeeves Oct 20th 2007

Well snipesnape626, Laura Mallory is a long and complicated story. You see, at a young age she sold her soul to the devil. Than she began to survive on baby's tears. And than someone shoved a pole up that-which-must-be-named. And ever since then she has spent her miserable life trying to stop kids from enjoying themselves and instead spend all their time in a tiny room with gray identical t-shirts reading the bible over and over and saying out loud "Harry Potter is the scripture of the devil" and learning how to kill puppies.

Posted by Corbus52 Oct 20th 2007

I am...shocked and disappointed. Dumbledore was a man I looked up to. Finding out he was bad with power in the seventh book made him less perfect, and more real. I loved that. This, to makes him more real, but in a sad way. I have gone from revering him to feeling sorry for him. Same-gender attraction is wrong. It destroys the whole idea of families. I hate that in the world today something like this is so widely accepted. I will not let this destroy my enjoyment of the books. One would not be able to tell he is gay from the book. I do, however, have a severe lack of respect for JK. It is a sad thing that has happened. I have lost respect for her. I fear what the world has come to. I fear for the rest of the movie series. I hope nothing will be added to promote this new piece of information. I do not think I could stand it.

Posted by Harriet_Lily_Snape Oct 20th 2007

chflitwick --- JKR has been known to be a very politically correct person. So, it is true that she put blacks, white, asians, ect into the story so all them would feel like they were a part of the story. That's one of the reasons why blacks were so mad about the Lord of the Rings, there were no blacks in the story. That's also why there are more white fans of that series than blacks. So, her putting a gay wizard in it would have been no different.

Posted by weasleychick92 Oct 20th 2007

Corbus52, how could you let this destroy your respect for Jo? She is an incredible woman, someone to look up to for being so fearless in the face of all the anger she had had thrown at her. You say you will continue to like the novels and Dumbledore. Well, Rowling did create them, you know. The books didn't write themselves...

Posted by snipesnape626 Oct 20th 2007

oh okay. thanks. and wow. can i just comment on the fact that we have awesome people on this website. i mean, lets take a look at harriet _lilly_snape. i mean wow. someone who goes on a FAN site of a certain series of books, that a certain author wrote, just to bash that author and call her a coward? well, harriet_lilly_snape, i have a question for you? were you at the ny carnegie hall event? do you know anyone that was there? hmm? no i didnt think so. well fyi , i was there and she did not say this like she was so - how did you put it - "strong" about him being gay. she just mentioned it as a little side note because of a fan who was saying how the HP relationships affected her life. i think maybe you need to check your facts before you start spewing off random bits of information that have absolutley no truth whatsoever.

Posted by revengeofpeeves Oct 20th 2007

You're totally right Corbus52. We can not let the "gay agenda" prevail. Than the death eaters will take over and the land of Mordor will reign across the world and everyone will fall under the gay spell. Not only that but gay people might have equal rights and than the sun will die and all will burn in hell. Thank goodness for heros such as yourself that have the courage to put these things in perspective for the rest of us simple-minded folks.

Posted by chflitwick Oct 20th 2007

I agree that she should have mentioned That he was gay in the books. If she was worried about sales, she could have put it in the last book and it would not have made that big of a deal. She could've just said that Dumbledore was romantically involved with Grindelwald or something and left it at that. I was only saying that in your posts you sometimes inadvertedly portray yourself as intolerant, whether you are or not.

Posted by She_Who_Must_Not_Be_Named1 Oct 20th 2007

wondermus22 you are a god(dess)! That was so funny!

Posted by Layla_DA Oct 20th 2007

I back up weasleychick92 comment 100%

Posted by wondermus22 Oct 20th 2007

God, I dont do drag lol

Posted by Harriet_Lily_Snape Oct 20th 2007

Corbus52 --- Your right. One thing is for sure, if they do put this stuff in the movies, they will lose a lot of money. snipesnape626 --- Sweetie. That's cute that you wish you were there. Stop embarrassing yourself with those kind of lies. It's just silly. And she really was a coward. I have been a fan of the series the moment the first book came out. I feel saddened that JKR feels like she should hide so much from us and then betray our trust. I really don't care what you think because right now your thinking with your emotions not you head. Calm down and think before you write.

Posted by Heiress_of_Insanity Oct 20th 2007

Is it just me, or are all of the anti-gays here coming up with nonbelievable arguments? Think of it this way: you were incredibly famous during your lifetime, but kept a huge secret. when you died, the secret got out, and people who had 'loved' you before started bashing you. 'Oh, yeah, didn't you hear? So-and-so did this or that! I hate their parents sooo much, and I find it sooo hard to like this person now!'

Posted by weasleychick92 Oct 20th 2007

Thank you, Layla_DA. And snipesnape, once again I agree with you. harriet_lilly_snape, if you were a true fan of HP enough to have an account on here, then how could you let something so insignificant like Dumbledore's sexuality preferences ruin it in one fell swoop? And chflitwick, maybe she could have put it in the books, but what would be the point? It wasn't, and isn't, relevant to the books except to highlight the issue Dumbledore must have been facing to have to defeat the one he loved. Jo didn't mean it to be all-important. She was answering a fan's question.

Posted by revengeofpeeves Oct 20th 2007

I remember a glorious day when HP fans used to praise JK for her genius and her books that promoted tolerance. But now it seems like half the HP population has put on their helmets on and joined Laura Mallory in her crusade of running into the wall like an idiot. The only reason this revelation depresses me is cause of all the helmet-wearers out there that have recently revealed themselves.

Posted by Trinity7 Oct 20th 2007

Who cares? It doesn't change the story or the series any. You can always choose to ignore it if you wish, the way I ignore the crappy epilogue....

Posted by chflitwick Oct 20th 2007

Although it wasn't relevant, didn't she also say something at this book reading about the books being about fighting intolerance and whatnot. The impact would have been a thousand times bigger had she put it in the books, and if she wanted to make a statement, that seems like the sensible thing. But their her books and her decision and they'r great either way.
