MuggleCast #117: Butterbeer by the Keg
MuggleCast #117: Butterbeer by the Keg Ben returns to our Harry Potter podcast this week and there's so much discussion, it requires a lot more than just one pint of butterbeer. Laura, Micah, Eric and I join Ben in going over everything JK Rowling revealed at her book reading last week at Carnegie Hall, including:

- Dumbledore is gay - initial thoughts from the hosts!
- Eric gives us a full report on MuggleCast LIVE in Australia!
- We go over each of the questions answered at the October 19th reading in NYC.
- Andrew, Laura, and Micah talk about meeting Jo. (Yes, life is now complete.)
- Should Jo have revealed Dumbledore's sexuality?
- Why does it matter, and why is it front-page news?
- The hosts become quite opinionated when it comes to fans who act as though Dumbledore being gay tarnishes his character.

All that and much more comes in this very entertaining and important episode of MuggleCast. We want to warn listeners that this episode does contain mature discussion and nothing within the show should be taken personally if it were to offend you (which we're pretty sure it won't).

With that said, we recommend subscribing for free in iTunes if you're a new listener (current listeners: update your feed). Full shownotes and alternate download links can be found over at the MuggleCast website. Enjoy!

Someone changed the poll on the right. Uhm hello, that's not right! Jo isn't that much of a hero stating this later, she could have said something extraordinary in the last book but she didn't. She gave us a mediocre, very unoriginal ending!! A few years from now people will be wondering what the heck we were thinking. But on the poll, DON'T CHANGE THE RESULTS BECAUSE THAT'S THE WAY YOU THINK IT SHOULD BE!!!!!! What is this site, like a communist country or something? It's great the Dumbledore is gay but in the end, it doesn't really matter because it wasn't stated in the book. And what's this that I have to give you my address when I log in? I'm not giving you that shhh! I just registered under another country so now your information is all wrong.

Posted by elf_rhiann Oct 29th 2007

Yay! I can't wait to hear their opinions on everything that happened this week!

Posted by amegee Oct 29th 2007

Great episode- not least of all beacuse of the awkward phrasing/tiptoeing around saying something offensive. Hilarious. I don't think you necessarily meant it as it came off, because I seem to remember from early episodes at least some of you are Christians, but I was offended by Eric's comment suggesting that all Christians are anti-gay. There are many gay Christians (and not just ones who don't act on their attractions) and even more who don't judge people who are gay any more than they judge others who don't follow perfectly the letter of the Bible.

Posted by MissMe Oct 29th 2007

Amazing episode...but like amegee i was offended by the comment...and the casts lack of knolge of the bible and stll sayn stuff that wasnt true:)

Posted by carter10 Oct 29th 2007

Why is it not showing up on my itunes?

Posted by Steffy88 Oct 29th 2007

That was the best episode EVER!! It was amazing, my favorite episode to date.

Posted by swans_rule_the_afl Oct 29th 2007

just finished listening- that episode was GOLD.

Posted by SugarxSpunxQuill Oct 29th 2007

Yay! Mugglecast has landed! Hmm... erics comments about Christians didn't offend me, but its incorrectness is annoying me. Im Catholic and have no problem with gay people, and don't really no anyone else that does (apart from some people on here recently!) Lol, I love the way they are trying to be so politicly correct. ILY MC!

Oh, thank goodness. As much as I hate waiting all weekend, Monday Morning MCs are the best. Now I have a whole week of bus rides to listen. My bus is so crazy that you guys will be my one strand of sanity and hope. Thanks guys!

Posted by xmugglecastismylifex Oct 29th 2007

YAY finally! SQUEEEE! I can't wait to download this! I wonder how politically correct they're gonna be about this! :)

Posted by SugarxSpunxQuill Oct 29th 2007

Lol, I wonder who Andrew meant when he said one of the hosts is 'at the least bisexual' x IMO the bible often seems to contradict itself. It tells us God made us all in his image, we are all children of God. So why then are gay people 'moraly wrong?' Last time i checked, homosexuals were people also.

Posted by de_lycanthrope Oct 29th 2007

YES!! *listening* For everyone saying iTunes doesn't get the file; unsubscribe from and delete the podcast from the list, then search for it in the store and subscribe again. That's what I did, and now I've got my episode downloaded and almost listened to. If it doesn't work for you, I really don't know what to tell you. de_lycanthrope [is not equal to] tech support.

man. mugglecasters are such jkr fanboys

Posted by harrypotterfan4ever Oct 29th 2007

its not on ituines yet!!!!!

Posted by punkishpunk_thing Oct 29th 2007

I have nothing against gay people, gay marriage, gay rights, anything. But I think that Dumbledore being gay is unecessary. I think the things that made him unique and kind of eccentric, like knitting, candy, his sense of style, etc. now just kind of seem like Jo made him into a typical gay stereotype. It takes away from his character, at least I think so.

Posted by sammygirlpower Oct 29th 2007

So much for this being, to quote andrew from a previous episode, a 'children's podcast'.....I love it because i'm pretty mature and can listen to stuff like that but im worried about u know younger kids who might not be suitable to listen to such M rated conversation... It rocks though...

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 29th 2007

I love how they generalize their own fans to make it easier to support their own opinions. lost some respect for MC there. Still an ok episode though.

Posted by de_lycanthrope Oct 29th 2007

How does it take away from his character? Dumbledore being gay wasn't even hinted at until Deathly Hallows, and even then you could pass it off as a really close frienship or (quoting the podcast) a man crush. His sexuality is just a random bit of trivia which can be proven, ignored or completely forgotten; just like Jo's mention of Neville marrying Hannah or her answer about Aberforth's goats. I personally thought the Deathly Hallows epilogue was unecessary, but I'm not complaining about it.

Posted by Ginny311 Oct 29th 2007

Yay! Finally! Haha! The poll today made me laugh.

Posted by ophia921 Oct 29th 2007

Finally!!!!! I'll be listening to it on my lunch break at work later this afternoon.

Posted by oXbeccaXo Oct 29th 2007

Lacock is pronounced Lay-cock! Not La-cock. Seriously! How childish they are. :P And the download hasn't appeared in iTunes yet so I'm listening to it on the website. But I want it on my iPod!!!!

Posted by moonal Oct 29th 2007

Posted by fenchurch26 Oct 29th 2007

Hey guys! I just wanted to comment on your question how Ron was able to open the Chamber Of Secrets in Deathly Hallows. Remember that Harry had to open the locket in the Forest of Dean in order for Ron to destroy it? He said, after Ron asked: 'How are you going to open it?' 'I'm going to ask it to open, using Parseltongue' (UK version page 304) So, when Harry finally finds Ron and Hermione in the castle holding all the Basilisk fangs and Harry says: 'But how did you get in there?' ...'You need to speek Parseltongue!' Ron says: 'It's whar you did to open the locket...' 'I had to have a few goes to get it right, but we got there in the end.' (UK version page 501) The whole point of Ron having to remember this hissing sound all the way from book 2 and him not knowing whether it's the right word doesn't hold any ground, really. p.s. : Dumbledore Rocks!

fenchurch, if someone said a phrase in a completely different language then you're own, (Assuming english is you first language) not just I don't know French or Spanish but Swahili or something in a really intense moment, would you remember it even for months? I still find that unbelievable.
