MuggleCast #117: Butterbeer by the Keg
MuggleCast #117: Butterbeer by the Keg Ben returns to our Harry Potter podcast this week and there's so much discussion, it requires a lot more than just one pint of butterbeer. Laura, Micah, Eric and I join Ben in going over everything JK Rowling revealed at her book reading last week at Carnegie Hall, including:

- Dumbledore is gay - initial thoughts from the hosts!
- Eric gives us a full report on MuggleCast LIVE in Australia!
- We go over each of the questions answered at the October 19th reading in NYC.
- Andrew, Laura, and Micah talk about meeting Jo. (Yes, life is now complete.)
- Should Jo have revealed Dumbledore's sexuality?
- Why does it matter, and why is it front-page news?
- The hosts become quite opinionated when it comes to fans who act as though Dumbledore being gay tarnishes his character.

All that and much more comes in this very entertaining and important episode of MuggleCast. We want to warn listeners that this episode does contain mature discussion and nothing within the show should be taken personally if it were to offend you (which we're pretty sure it won't).

With that said, we recommend subscribing for free in iTunes if you're a new listener (current listeners: update your feed). Full shownotes and alternate download links can be found over at the MuggleCast website. Enjoy!

It's a book folks, a book revolving around magic, anything can happen and most often did.

can someone explain how to do the mugglecasts? like how to listen? ive never done it before and i really want to ... HELP~!!

Posted by Koka Oct 29th 2007

I haven't read through a lot your comments but I did spot that a lot of you noticed the same thing I was about to mention ( and I was so...ANGRY while listening to MuggleCast because I thought to myself- how do these guys NOT remember what was in the book! )- Ron heard Harry OPEN the locked using parsel tongue in 'The Silver Doe', so Ron didn't have to 'trace' his memory all the way back to year 2, he just managed to remember something that had happened, well basically, not so long ago. To conclude- Ron managing to imitate Harry wasn't the weak point, I think the fact that the guys on Mugglecast weren't being very thorough was.

Posted by Larien Oct 29th 2007

Okay, WTF. I came to comment, was told to update my profile, and then I got spammed to death! Pisses me off, Mugglenet...

Posted by The_Dark_Marc Oct 29th 2007

Merenwen_Lupin21 There's a link on the top left of the page, 11th down or http://www.mugglenet.com/ mugglecast/ or subscribe to iTunes and search the podcasts for Mugglecast or Harry Potter.

Posted by snapdragon Oct 29th 2007

Koka, the mugglecast hosts have to read the book pretty much twice as fast as the rest of the world. They had a bunch of live podcasts and other events to attend to right after the book was released. So I could see how they missed some details. Most of them are also just starting school or have full time jobs, so I don't know if they got to reread it at a slower pace yet.

Sounds like a good one! Go MuggleCasters!!!

Posted by Andrew_B Oct 29th 2007

I can't seem to find the episode. I checked it on iTunes and that episode isn't there, only last week's. Can someone help me out?

Posted by LNachts Oct 29th 2007

In response to the Bible excepts that Andrew used in the show, EVERYONE needs to watch this. This is from The West Wing, and the president is very very religious, though a liberal politician. And he kicks ASS. http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=rHaVUjjH3EI

Posted by hpintwense06 Oct 29th 2007

THEY GOT TO MEET JO! I'M JEALOUS!!!!! lol but can't wait to listen to the episode (FINALLY!)!!!

Posted by Jimmy_D Oct 29th 2007

Wooo! Finally! I was glad I didn't have to wait another week for this.

Posted by artist31593 Oct 29th 2007

yayyy!!! im so excited. ive been going crazy here without a new mugglecast. i must have been checking at least a million times a day. *listens now*

Posted by Koka Oct 29th 2007

snapdragon- yes, I can see your point ( a very good one indeed ;) ) and you're basically right. I just thought it was kind of, dunno, silly, that they went about discussing whether or not Ron could have remembered and whether it was a 'weak point' of the book, when they got some facts wrong. It's not that I'm judging them or anything, heaven's no, it's just that while I was listening to the podcast I had this urge to jump into the screen and set the record straight, because I want them TO know what the deal is. so it's not a judgment just my wanting them TO KNOW this ( the locket scene ) so they could reconsider things and see them in a different light :) that's actually the reason I wrote my first comment to begin with. but you're right, it didn't sound the way I wanted it to so now I just want to set the record straight and say it wasn't my attention to be mean or anything.

Posted by gracie_lou13 Oct 29th 2007

if sophomore wasn't the hardest year of high school, i would listen to the episode right now. but it is, so i have no time. i haven't even listened to episode 116. i know..please don't kill me.

Posted by HP_and_me Oct 29th 2007

That is THE funniest and greatest episode of any podcast I have ever listened to! Greeeeat! I agree with you on mostly everything, I'm just enormously jalous that you got to go to her reading in NY! And I'm also kind of pissed of that Jo invited Leaky to go to the reading and meet her, and not Mugglenet... Why? I do like both The Leaky Cauldron and Pottercast, but I think she should have invited both sites, you are equally popular and equally important to the fandom. And also, I'm now seriously curious about what Andrew said about "at least one of the producers of Mugglecast"... But, keep it to yourselves until you're ready, and just keep making these amazing podcasts!!

Posted by HPUS Oct 29th 2007

Ugh! Finally!!!! I still can't find it on iTunes!!!!!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 29th 2007

lol at the part where they ask why its such a bug deal. they dedicated a whole darn show to it :l so it looks like they thinks so too

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Oct 29th 2007

*big

Posted by cellopower Oct 29th 2007

It's not showing up on my iTunes :( That's probably good though, because I need to stop goofing around on MuggleNet and finish my homework... :(

Posted by rooon Oct 29th 2007

Thanks!

Posted by SImpression Oct 29th 2007

Well, from what i remember, Ron says he remembers Harry saying 'open' in Parseltongue from in Deathly Hallows, not Chamber of Secrets. nice 'episode' thing though, usualyl i dont listen but took a shot at it and i found it quite amusing, i'm definitely going to be listening next week!

Posted by hedwig794 Oct 29th 2007

yes finally! i have been waiting for it to show up! This is going to be my first time downloading it, i usually listen off the computer ( i kno pathetic but now i know how to do it) I ♥ mugglecast

Posted by SpewingSlugs Oct 29th 2007

It's so nice to hear them rant and be just a politically incorrect as we are. This was a really great show, just to hear them be themselves. I wasn't offended at all.

Posted by CROOKSHANKS99 Oct 29th 2007

yesss......finally mugglecast!!!!!!! more about the gay thing...hope that is the last of it!

Posted by HProx_my_sox99 Oct 29th 2007

hooray!!! i just dowloaded it. it was about time it came out =]

Posted by xmugglecastismylifex Oct 29th 2007

I thought the whole Parseltongue was explained cause Ron had the bit of Voldy's soul, (the cup, I think...), and therefore was part heir of Slytherin. Which is why Harry, Ginny (was being possesed by heir of Slytherin), were both able to open it. I'm pretty sure that that makes absolute logical sense, I don't know why Jo didn't think of it. Tsk tskk... lol jk ily Jo! This MC is soo funny so far, Andrew trying to be all "politically correct" at the beginning, and then he was just like screw it! Also-- LeCock = priceless!!! "Was Dumbledore there?" OMG ROTFL!

Posted by valthefish Oct 29th 2007

look in Mugglenet ABOUT US under favorate movies and TV shows, it might give you a clue to who's bi-gay

Posted by Koka Oct 29th 2007

wow, he's got great taste :D :D :D I'm a big fan of QAF too ( but I reckon he's into the UK version, while I prefer the US one....Gale Harold, mmmm )

Posted by Merenwen_Lupin21 Oct 29th 2007

Stll listening to it, but I really enjoyed it!! However they got a little annoying about their lack of knowledge on Deathly Hallows. Seriously have they read it or not!?! But it was good for those of us who didn't get to see her at Carnegie

Posted by rooon Oct 29th 2007

I'm excited!

Posted by SirKerrek Oct 29th 2007

OK, who did the 100% 1 vote thing to the poll? Jo is courageous and admirable. Yes, that is a good answer, but does it require some bull like rigging a poll? Give a rest people, seriously, it's OVER.

Posted by annish007 Oct 29th 2007

Oh crap..dumbledore gay??!!!I HATE GAY PEOPLE!!!freaks but it was stated after the book so i will just ignore it...

Posted by MrsWeasleyRocks Oct 29th 2007

Would someone give these little twits on mugglecast a prod up the ass? OH, the religious right "Those people", yada yada yada. Nobody cares, its no big deal. After this broadcast - goodbye mugglenet! Insolant little college students without a mind of their own. Your brains are being fed by radical professors who know nothing but brainwashing your smoked up brains, but it is SO cool isn't it? I'm NOT gay - and I'm ok - the t-shirts are in the making.

Posted by veela4lifex0x Oct 29th 2007

I am really sick of all this publicity surrounding Dumbledore's sexuality. He's gay. Now believe me, I am perfectly fine with homosexuals. Some close friends of mine have recently come out of the closet. But seriously, all this news buzz is making me sick. All right already! It's done. He's gay. Deal with it. That doesn't change the story or most of our feelings toward Harry Potter. I'm not trying to change anyone's opinions either. Me and my friends have spilt views on this ourselves. But he's a fictional character. I'm not trying to disagree with those who are opposed to homosexuality either. I just want to say that it sickens me how much publicity this is getting. ITS OLD NEWS! JEEZ! On another story, I wonder how the hosts are going to tackle such a touchy subject...

Posted by truegryffindor704k Oct 29th 2007

GOD!! do you guys know how you made me feel the past few weeks? MY timeline of events: 1st week with no MC- Became emo. didn't smile 2nd week- Became sick. Lost my voice too. Couldn't bear lack of MC 3rd week- really started scaring my friends. started dieing and being eaten from the inside. so please please please don't ever do that again! Anyway... downloading now, and feeling a lot better already! I love you Andrew!!

Posted by abrokmeier Oct 29th 2007

Awesome episode! I miss Jamie :(

Posted by gracie_lou13 Oct 29th 2007

hey valthefish...who were you talking about in your last comment?

Posted by honeydukes0209 Oct 29th 2007

just finished listening...it was great!

Posted by rooon Oct 29th 2007

Yeah!! :)

Posted by snapdragon Oct 29th 2007

MrsWeasleyRocks? You're made of lame. I'm pretty sure Andrew, Laura, Micah and Eric believed what they believe before they went off to college. And Micah is well out of college, in his mid twenties. He's a grown adult and still believes what he does. So do not blame their opinions on "radical college professors" because they're old enough to formulate their own opinions. Just because someone is tolerant of homosexuals and not as close-minded as you are doesn't mean that they're immature or not old enough to "understand" it. I'm sure by the time they hit they're senior citizens they'll still hold the same opinion regarding homosexuality. So thanks billions for leaving mugglenet. We don't need people like you here anyway.

Posted by iLeo Oct 29th 2007

Yeah go ahead and call the bible crap Laua and co. Insult every christian and assume we all hate homosexuals and think Potter is evil. Yeah. And you call US closeminded?

Posted by snapdragon Oct 29th 2007

iLeo... Laura made it clear at one point in this episode that she doesn't disrespect Christians who are accepting of homosexuality but still don't believe in it or necessarily support it. I think you have selective hearing or are just way too uptight and easily-offended.
