Gambon 'camping it up'
Gambon 'camping it up' Daniel Radcliffe will be on ITV's Parkinson show at 10:45 tonight, and some excerpts from the interview have been published online. According to The Daily Mail, Daniel said the following about Dumbledore actor Michael Gambon:

"Well, he's been camping it up around the set like nobody's business. There was a scene when Michael had to come in and tell someone how much he loved knitting patterns. He just adored saying that."

However, please note that as the context of this quote is not given, we presume Gambon is merely "camping it up" off set and not actually on camera.

I like the line and I'm glad they're keeping it ... but this sounds like exactly the sort of thing I was afraid would happen.

Posted by AcidPops33 Nov 3rd 2007

Hey lidietta... *Coughs* Sorry I have relatives over, that's why I didn't reply. I'll go down in a minute..

Posted by Quiscalus Nov 3rd 2007

I'm SOOO glad their keeping the knitting pattern line in there. It kills me everytime I read it.

Posted by mxd Nov 3rd 2007

Its all in the book guys I mean you ever catch a heterosexual wearing a plum velvet suit? lol To camp up dumbledoor in the movies would betray his charchter extremely, after all that wasn't a character trait more quirky eccentricity's.

Posted by lolobell123 Nov 3rd 2007

lol "camping it up". i'll definately be watching that.

Posted by 7211harry1127 Nov 3rd 2007

Well, I'm from America, but someone above said that it was like... overplaying or exaggerating... probably something along those lines. Someone let me know if I'm wrong here lol. As someone else stated before, he probably won't be flaunting his sexuality because this is supossed to be a kids movie. Lol, my 11 month old is laughing at Spongebob : )

Posted by AcidPops33 Nov 3rd 2007

I know what "camping" or "to camp" means, by American terms. But "camp it up" is a phrase I'm not familiar with!!! *Huffs* Would someone PLEASE explain?! I know I'm not the only one here... Anyways I'll come back later, when my relatives have left.

Posted by felixfelicis888 Nov 3rd 2007

I like camping

Posted by Willowrose Nov 3rd 2007

What does camping it up mean? Does it have anything to do with actual tents?

Posted by liam848 Nov 3rd 2007

To act "camp" basically means acting like a stereotypical gay man, so "camping it up" means acting stereotypically gay. This isnt the best explination but its the best I can give on comments

Posted by avada_kedervax3 Nov 3rd 2007

Hehe...love the line. I'm just worried about the way he'll say the line.

Posted by __Bellatrix__ Nov 3rd 2007

do u mean that he is acting like a gay??????

Posted by AcidPops33 Nov 3rd 2007

Ooh I see, thank you liam! I think I have the jist of what it means. Thank you so much! Well now that I fully understand the post... I sure hope he's not "camping it up" when the film's rolling!! We need to move away from the stereotypical images of gays and realize that they can be strong too!!!! The closer to Dumbledore's character Gambon plays, the more people will realize this.

Posted by liam848 Nov 3rd 2007

I've been worried ever since the news about Dumbledores sexuality was revealed about how they are going to do this in the movies, hopefully the Dumbledore character isnt changed too much in the films now.

Posted by grifal Nov 3rd 2007

if liam848 is right and camping it up means act what people see as typical gay then the artical is in my opinion pretty discusting. a mature actor can't handle his role is about a gay hero. and daniel say he thinks that this is funny proving he is not handling it very well either. i always was real fan of the books and thought the movies were just part of the potter hype and not really good at all. i now kinda start to lose my connection to those movies and the actors even more. Frank

Posted by chrisgorman02 Nov 3rd 2007

I don't know why people are worried about dumbledore sexuality being abused in the movie. That knitting line was already in the book. It wasn't made up.

Posted by xmugglecastismylifex Nov 3rd 2007

Hah, that's pretty funny! Doesn't "camping it up" basically mean hamming it up, or over-exagerating for effect? I'm not positive though. I can't wait to see HBP, so far they've been keeping it extremely close to the book, I only hope they will leave mostly everything in *coughOotPcough*, so the whole plot won't flash by via montage in about 10 minutes. So excited for Lav-Lav, and espiecally H/G! WOOT! Only what, a year or so? Nov. 2008, am I right?

Posted by gredandfeorgefan Nov 3rd 2007

that was a good frais from the books

Posted by GinnyIsGenius Nov 3rd 2007

If you picture Gambon doing it, it is quite funny actually ... but I get your comment, grifal. I never liked his portrayal of Dumbledore, anyway.

Posted by ASnidget Nov 3rd 2007

Don't worry everyone, I heard Gambon isn't going to be playing Dumbledore in the next movie. Julian Clarey will play him instead.

Posted by chrisgorman02 Nov 3rd 2007

Yeah. some of you guys are taking this way too seriously. Step back a miniute and think....would they really have gambon walk around flicking his wrists talking with a lisp? ; ) no. most likley gambon was joking around or daniel was exagerrating. dumbledores character will no change in the slightest.

Posted by Hermione_G_Weasley Nov 3rd 2007

Camping it up means doing something "to speak or behave in a coquettishly playful or extravagantly theatrical manner" as I know it.

Posted by GinnyIsGenius Nov 3rd 2007

ouch!

Posted by Duffanator Nov 3rd 2007

Camping it up? wow. Gambon takes his roles seriously. Or is it normal Gambon???

Posted by ginerva_weasley Nov 3rd 2007

the sheer thought of having gambon to a stereotypical gay man is just appaling. seeing as most gay stereotypes are about as reliable as a Rita Skeeter peice, I hope most of the "camping it up" is done off screen.

Posted by Ginny Nov 3rd 2007

hahahahah!!.... he sounds like a funny guy!:P... i also adored that part! =B

LOL, fabulous avatar choice Mugglenet ;) To anyone who doesn' tknow what this expression means - a man who is "camp" is very effiminate, usually referring to a very flamboyant gay man.

Posted by liam848 Nov 3rd 2007

Parkinson is just about to start if anyone is planning on watching this interview

Posted by honeydukes0209 Nov 3rd 2007

lol i llove that line!...:) thanks to liam and brielle and others for telling those of us who didn't know what "camping" was! some ppl were just being ignorant...

Posted by liam848 Nov 3rd 2007

Daniel Radcliffe said he was camping it up on the set but not in the film

Posted by de_lycanthrope Nov 3rd 2007

I'm on the fence about this movie already, and it's not even done filming. That's bad. If they're going to make Dumbles stereotypically homosexual, HBP is going to be boycotted and rallied against. He didn't act like that in the books. Making him act that way in the movies is stupid, and is going to draw a lot of negative attention from people not already actively hating HP.

Posted by Emi_5 Nov 3rd 2007

"No, I was merely reading the Muggle magazines. I do love knitting patterns."

Posted by jellyfish Nov 3rd 2007

From a Brit with a certain sense of humour, the idea on Michael Gambon 'camping it up' is freaking hilarious. Try not to overreact, i'm sure he's not like that on film. Hopefully.

Posted by kalb Nov 3rd 2007

Hp_and_ME - "Camping it up" means to make jokes, act silly, over act... Another English term, or maybe more American, is "Hamming it up."

Posted by Marie_Lee Nov 3rd 2007

cheesecakians!!!!!!!!

Posted by kalb Nov 3rd 2007

Ummm, my mistake. I'm American but chat with Brits on other forums, (other than HP) and I truly thought Camping it up was another phrase for being silly, I had no idea it was a gay thing. LOL!!! I hope he acts strait in the movie, but maybe Dumbledore did knit. He did say he wanted warm socks. And wasn't there comment about being embarrassed by a scarf or mittens in book one?

Posted by Marie_Lee Nov 3rd 2007

*sniffs* all alone......

Posted by AcidPops33 Nov 3rd 2007

Boo! Mrsroonil, you there?!?!?!?!!?????????

Posted by little_angel2711 Nov 3rd 2007

I've just seen the interview on Parkinson so just that you all know Dan does say that he swears the line was in the script before the Dumbledore is gay revelation - so there is no real concern that the movies are going to exaggerate Dumbledore!

Posted by Marie_Lee Nov 3rd 2007
