'Beedle the Bard' sells for nearly 2m pounds
'Beedle the Bard' sells for nearly 2m pounds On the 1st of November we told you that JK Rowling has written Tales of Beedle the Bard for a charity auction to be held by Sotheby's. The auction was held today in London, and the book was auctioned off for £1,950,000 ($3.98 million)! From CBBC Newsround:

The Harry Potter creator, who watched the auction live on the internet, told Newsround that she was "stunned and ecstatic" at the news.

JK hand wrote the jewel-encrusted volumes of short stories and gave six of them to her friends who had helped and supported her while she wrote the seven Potter books.

She told Newsround: "I'm stunned and ecstatic. This will mean so much to the children desperately in need of help. It means Christmas has come early for me."

IM happi that type of money will be given of to charity but soo jelouse for the people that have that kind of money...o well...yeah and about the Antiques Roadshow thing that's totally true...

I understand that she wanted it to be something special for the people who supported her, and the last copy was for charity. But I agree with what some others have said. If the book had been published and ALL the profits went to charity, it would be much more than what this book sold for. I think it's great that JK Rowling donates to charities, as has been stated. But I think one also needs to look at proportions... A study was done years ago that showed those of the lowest income households actually donate a greater amount to charity proportionately than do those of the highest income households. JK Rowling donating thousands of pounds isn't going to have a negative financial affect on her life. She could afford to donate much more if she wanted to. She certainly has more money than she could ever possibly need in this lifetime anyway. Looking forward to the Encyclopedia. Hopefully all the profits from that will go to charity.

While I think it would be AMAZING to have a copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, i think it's even more incredibly amazing and kind of her for only writing the 7 books. It wouldn't be nearly as special for the people who received their copies as "thank-you"s if everyone could have one. And if everyone could get a copy, then no money would have been raised for that charity. GO JO! I don't think it's at all selfish of her or that she owes the public a copy of The Tales... But I certainly wouldn't complain if in a few years a printed version became available... hehehe.
