Warner Brothers chooses Blu-Ray for HD DVD releases
In a press release yesterday, Warner Brothers announced that their movies will be exclusively on Blu-Ray high definition discs starting in May 2008. Currently, all five Potter films are available in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats. All of WB's movies will continue to be released on standard DVD.Because of WB's announcement, Sony's Blu-Ray format is dominating the high-definition market. Most major movie studios are now exclusive to it, and the competing HD-DVD format is likely to disappear soon.

eew. I dont have a blu-ray player....#1? TOP 10.
OMG! 2nd! Go Blu Ray!
Yeah! 3rd?
What is blu ray anyway?? But it's great news that it's going to blu ray for all you blu ray lovers out there.
So get the originals fast like whoa? Kay!
dvd is the new vhs. it's a bit annoying, actually.
#10, yeah, I feel cool...
i just dont get Blue- ray, i dont find it usefull in any sence .. nay ways werent they designed for playstation or with the playstation system that is the type of disk that is needed.. i just dont get it your going to have all your disks on the blue ray format when most of the people who have the format are people who has either a psp, or a playstation system, and the fact there are now blue ray players they are so people who arents gammers can still use there disk, i think it is just plain silly!!
cool, another reason to get a PS3. Looks like Blu-ray is going to beat HD-DVD.
WHAT THE fudge?! This is obviously because of Sony. Looks like I'm pirating the rest of the Potter movies, thanks WB! =D
Oh, cool. I don't have a player suitable for either of those, though, soooo....
I don't get the sudden blu-ray conversion when most consumers that I know of would own an hd-dvd player. format wars. ugh.
Ugh, I'm too poor for a Blu-Ray disc player, and my parents won't dish over for a PS3 cause they know I'll get hooke. Will regular DVDs even stay on the market for long, at the rate these things are going? I have a regular DVD home theatre system....
I agree with the money issues others have posted. I can't afford a new DVD player right now so I guess I won't be buying any of their DVDs. It seems a little soon to me to be phasing out regular DVDs. *is frustrated*
supposlly the blue thing is to pack more information on a dvd that the blue lazer will being more accurate that the red one will read... but apparenly the dvd player that we have now will read them as well
SO HAPPY THAT I GOT A BLUE-RAY FOR CHRISTMAS!GO BLUE-RAY!
An explanation of Blu-ray & HD-DVD (I actually submitted this story to MuggleNet - under a different e-mail address - but it looks like they dug up the official press release): Just like DVD replaced the inferior VHS, a new, superior format is going to replace DVD. The two main contenders are Blu-ray (BD) and HD-DVD. No matter how you look at it, they're the same thing: high definition DVDs. Blu-ray gets its name from the fact that it uses a blue laser to read the disc. HD-DVD uses a blue laser as well, but its name is more consumer friendly, so it was speculated that they would win. If you've ever looked into a regular DVD's laser (not directly, I hope), you'd have seen that it was red. The data on these new discs need a much finer laser to read, which is where the new one comes in; don't ask me why it's blue. Remember that Sony also developed Betamax, MiniDisc, and the more recent UMD (used for PSP games) - all failures (Betamax was superior to VHS, but it didn't catch on). But this time, Sony (and if I recall correctly, it was Philips who helped them develop BD) has been pushing their format more, trying to get more of the major studios to publish their movies exclusively for Blu-ray. The first Blu-ray players hit the market at $1,000-1,500 in late '06. Fortunately, the PS3 had come out shortly beforehand. It was a quality player costing $500 and having ten times the features - amazing. The main advantage BD has over HD-DVD is that it can hold 25GB of data per layer, rather than HD-DVD's 15 (to give you perspective, a dual-layered standard DVD held 9GB). I've heard that 8-layered discs (that's 200GB!) have been in the works since Blu-ray's birth, but as far as I know they haven't been released yet. I was hoping Blu-ray was going to win since the beginning, as I'm an avid PlayStation gamer (by no means a fanboy). They've actually been ahead in the "format wars" for a while now, so I'm not too surprised WB finally went exclusive.
i don't see blu-ray replacing dvd the way dvd did to vhs. not yet anyway. when you consider that there is no reason to own a blu-ray player if you don't have an hdtv and most people don't have hdtvs, dvd will be around for a while. blu-ray may eventually replace the dvd, but by that point hd will be much more common and it won't be a big deal for most people.
wow CyborgGT. that was an amazing explanation. i don't feel so clueless now.
People I don't think you are understanding it... WB will not stop making regular DVD format (yet) So no need to freak out :P
I love Blu-Ray! This Warner announcement has been rumored for awhile now. I think Warner made the right move. Siding with Blu-Ray will end the format war quicker, so when HD-TV's become more mainstream Blu-Ray players will be the new standard and be cheaper. That was a good explanation Cyborg, but I will add the part of the 8 major movie studios. You see, Columbia Pictures (Owned by Sony), MGM (Which Sony owns 20% of), 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Walt Disney, and now Warner Brothers are on the Blu-Ray team, while Universal and Paramount are on the HD DVD team. However, Universal might announce that it will also support Blu-Ray as well soon, which would be the final nail in the coffin for HD DVD.
Blu-ray sucks. Why? Because of Sony. Sony sucks. Sony screwed over their loyal fans with the atrocity of the PS3. The PS3 only exists to promote Blu-ray. I protest Sony on principle on this one. And for Mugglenet to say HD-DVD will now fade away is really really bad journalism, because HDDVD still has a lot of support. It supported by Paramount, exclusively. Remember transformers? Paramount is big... Not to mention Microsoft. And when is the last time someone went up against Microsoft and came out ahead? And don't point at the iPod. The iPod was on the market YEARS before Microsoft ever tried. Microsoft came into the videogame market with the xbox against a struggling Nintendo and a dominate Sony. Now, while Microsoft is losing to Nintendo, Sony is getting thumped. So don't be so smug about this. The format war is far from over. Do yourselves all a favor and buy a dual player that supports both formats. Because right now it is totally unpredictable. And you don't want to end up with a thousand dollars of discs and player that are useless.
I agree with you on some points Iamrecognized, but on others I dont see what youre talking about. Sony f***ed up on the PS3 in a few ways, but no worse then microsoft. The PS3 is a much better value then the 360, explain how they screwed loyal fans over... I dislike both formats because of how expensive playing a movie will be in a few years, neither are really better quality then the other.
I was basically going to say what CyborgGT said. I love this geek talk =]
Sucks. I have HD-DVD. Whatever, I'll just have to get the standard definition..
and you'd think we humans would have had enough already...
Blue Ray annoys me. I still have an antenna on my tv...
The porn industry dictates which media is adopted, not mainstream media. They dictated the outcome of the beta/vhs war because Sony fought them every step of the way to keep them from putting their movies on beta disks and now, Sony is doing the same with blu-ray. So the top dogs of the porn industry has gone on record saying if Sony continues to fight them, they will back hd-dvd. As an hardcore videogamer, we all know why Sony is really pushing blu-ray hard, because their rival, Microsoft, backs hd-dvd and is more than likely developing the next X-Box system using an hd-dvd drive. Sony feels that they can either drive MS out of the videogame industry by either driving the hd-dvd format into the ground or charging MS an arm and a leg to use their blu-ray format in the next X-Box and therefore perhaps keeping MS out of the videogame market. Either way, Sony is going to continue trying to destroy Nintendo and Microsoft which is bad news for us hardcore videogamers.
I think the porn industry killing beta was kind of exaggerated, though its true on a level, there were a lot more factors. this is a much different situation. With the internet, I dont know anyone who still pays for porn, i dont think the industry is really more of a force then blu-ray supporters. either way, its far from over, I doubt HD-DVD will go out without a fight for all the money already spent.
The difference between SD and HD is really not that big, not like the difference between VHS and DVD. And it's not at all the same transition, new blue-ray/hd-dvd players are backward compatible with DVDs, so there is no need to go out and re-buy all of your discs. I'm just saying that DVDs are far from over. People shouldn't be worried about a new format comming so soon, because it's not really a replacement. It's more like an extension of the DVD. And HD-DVD vs Blue-ray? Who cares, really, it's the same thing. The blue-ray has more gigabytes though, that might help them win. I'm not really intrested before they go from MPEG2 to MPEG 4. THEN they will have room for much footage, I tell ya!
well i guess this is good news for all u blue-ray lovers, but sadly i dont care for blue-ray much. any way, i have a theory.......and hopefully if u guys dont mind, i wud like u to tell me if u agree on this or im just a nutter. ok here it is, i think that possibly mugglenet might be strying away from harry potter........i mean yes there are harry potter related updates, like about jk which im sure every one loves, i mean who wudnt. but other stuff seems to make its way on, like spiderwick and anything fantasyish. i mean im not saying that stuff is bad or anything, but isnt supposed to be JUST ABOUT HARRY POTTER. like if people want to hear more about that stuff they should go to a different website, or look it up, u know? any way just thought i wud get that out there. let me know if u agree!:) signed allison elayne broyles
Sheesh, haven't DVDs only been out for about 10 years? At least the VHS had a 15 year mark before becoming "obsolete". Now that I think about it, music is the same way. Let me go down the list: MP3 CD Cassett e 8-track Record albums have I missed any??
hmmm don't have either blue ray or whatever the other is....as long as there ae normal dvds being made its okay...
well, as time goes on, the Blu-ray players and the PS3 are only going to get cheaper. So wait a few months and see which player/disc is going to win this battle so you don't go out and buy a $300-$500 player that you're going to use for one year b/c the other player won.
I am HD DVD myself. Can someone tell me, as unbiased as possible. Why blu-ray is better than HD DVD (ignoring studio backing and disk size). What can the format do that HD DVD can't? Ignore cost price of players and everything else. I just want to know what features that somehow make blu-ray superior. Or is HD DVD better?
have nothing to say cause i have no idea what blue ray is:P... im searching in google, so if a find anything worthy about this odd object:P... ill tell =D (hahaha!... not knowing what it is makes me feel like me grandma!..)
http://en.wikipedia.org/w iki/Blu-ray_Disc#Competit ion_from_HD_DVD this site has loads of info: Blu-ray Disc is a high-density optical disc format for the storage of digital information, including high-definition video.
its me again:P... guys, dont get your hopes down... i dont think dvd's will go out of the market in quite a while... if you notice, poeple still buy VHS, and those are way older! (and still on the market)... if it does stop selling we can just swish our wands anyways =D
As for Microsoft, they have a big contender, FYI, which is a Mac. When you say the iPod existed for years, it's true, but that's because the main consumers only now about Windows, and didn't really have enough courage to buy a Mac. Mac is definitely safter, cheaper, and just more trustworthy.
I have an HD-DVD player :( I guess I'm gonna have to get a Blu-Ray player to see my movies in high def. I'll probably pick up a PS3 sometime in 2008.
Awesome! I need a blu-ray player to see mine in high def. too. =P hopefully i can get something soon though!
awesome,but i dont have a blue ray player...:{
I heard that on the radio!
This was interesting to find out.... "As polarizing as the high-definition format war continues to be, Warner Home Video remains silently, but firmly, committed to its position of providing its movie titles to users of all formats on the market. "If the consumer continues to support both formats, the industry will as well," Warner Home Video president Ron Sanders told TWICE magazine in an interview last week from the floor of the CEDIA convention in Denver." then later I read.... "The HD DVD Promotional Group, alongside Toshiba and Microsoft, had planned a cocktail party and press conference to tout the success and improvements in both the HD DVD format and hardware players, which saw heavy sales during the holidays thanks to falling prices. But the party was cut short by Warner's surprise news that it wouldn't be taking part. Apparently, the studio did not give HD DVD advance notice of its decision to go Blu-ray only, and recently reassured the public of its continued support for both formats after rumors of an exclusivity deal began to surface. Believe it or not, Warner actually played a role in the development of HD DVD and had endorsed the format from the beginning. It's also a member of the DVD Forum, from where HD DVD was borne. While it's not clear what exactly led the studio to change its mind, there is much speculation that Sony offered Warner a large incentive." Just like Sony to try and monopolize everything they enter in to. I think the gov't needs to do something just like they did against Microsoft. Like someone said in another web-board, Sony has officially replaced MS as the new "evil empire".
wtf? This isn't fair. What about us poor students who can barely afford to pay rent? I cant afford to buy another DVD player.
New Line Cinemas has also gone Blu-Ray exclusive.
