Deathly Hallows film to be split in two parts?
Deathly Hallows film to be split in two parts? UPDATE: Empire Online is now quoting WB as saying "no decision has been made," in part because no script exists yet. Steve Kloves cannot begin work on the Deathly Hallows script because of the US writer's strike. We'll let you know more once we hear it!

Several visitors have sent in this article from the Daily Mail, which claims crews working on Half-Blood Prince have been told the final film will be split:

A film source said: "There's so much to fit that the view is the last movie should be in two halves. There is a huge battle when Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, takes on Voldemort that needs to be done really well."

What's more, the Daily Mail claims that big name directors such as Steven Spielberg are being considered to direct Deathly Hallows. We'll look into this rumor and let you know what Warner Brothers has to say!

I'm not really sure what i think about this...(although i love a news break) But on the upside, a split in two movie could make it better for hardcore HP fans of the books, because yes, they wouldn't be leaving much out. The thing is, they might lose some hype about the movie if it is split in two. Like, people aren't going to get so excited if its like...one part...and then they have to wait. Plus, if the first part is bad (and i'm not saying it is) Not many people are going to want to see the second part. I just ....don't...know.... Speilburg would be really cool though. Although i would love Peter Jackson.=)

Posted by christianaeg Jan 13th 2008

Lol Columbus should direct up to the wedding, Yates till Shell cottage, and Peter jackson for the climax.... and yes, i remember when GoF was gonna be 2 movies, it would have worked a lot better for GoF then DH....

Posted by GWisthe1 Jan 13th 2008

yea. i guess the only good things coming from this would be that they would be able to put in so much more book material which i have to admit makes me happy and its just another thing to look forward to. this way the end of the harry potter hype wouldnt have to end for at least another year or two.

Posted by l00ny_l0veg00d Jan 13th 2008

They should. But I bet it's just a rumor.

Posted by kalb Jan 13th 2008

The Hobbit is going to be two halves, why not HP 7?

Posted by starlette804 Jan 13th 2008

I don't think I would like them to make Deathly Hallows into 2 movies... it would seem too choppy and separate... I think they should just make it a long movie. Any true fan would watch and enjoy it no matter how long it is... I definitely would. I think they could just cut down the traveling from hillside to hillside part a bit, and they could make it fit into a few hours... it would be too weird being 2 separate movies, I mean, it's going to be based on 1 book, not 2.

Posted by Freddie_Phoenix Jan 13th 2008

I very much doubt that it'll be split. However, for those John Williams fans out there Spielberg directing would be a godsend. Because, as you probably know, Spielberg = Williams. They've worked together a LOT.

Posted by kalb Jan 13th 2008

After more thought, where would they cut the first movie off at? Retrieving the Sword? Being captured? Escaping Malfoy Manor? Maybe not two halves, but three strait hours would suffice.

Posted by mmesnape Jan 13th 2008

I_heart_Mugglecast : Poeple went for LOTR in three part, why not DH? I heard the same thing for the hobbit, in two parts that is. Anyway, at this point in the game, its just rumors. Lets not get too ahead of ourselves. ;)

Posted by 593hp6 Jan 13th 2008

I'm not sure about this. It would be cool to have a longer movie. Maybe they can make two movies and have them out at the exact same time so it wouldn't be one movie that's four hours long. (I can't hold using the Bathroom that long). I wonder what J.K. Rowling would want. As for Spielberg, he is a good director for other movies, but I'm not sure about him for this one. DIDN'T HE PASS UP THE FIRST HP FILM FOR ANOTHER FILM. He had the chance before and didn't take it, I don't think he would be loyal to the books either. Also I had a question about the Black family tree. I read Tonks is Sirius's cousin, and if Sirius is also Bealatrix's cousin that would make Tonks and Bealatrix cousins, but Tonk's mom is Bellatrix's sister making her Bellatrix's niece. Can someone help me out?

Posted by Gryfin_Suky Jan 13th 2008

The thing is, I know they said the same thing for OotP and/or HBP so I personally don't think that this rumor is true. I think it would be better just to make the movie longer. No true HP fan will mind an increase in the length to get absolutely everything needed in there. The only problem is if WB would allow that considering their restrictions on time.

Posted by professorlongbottom Jan 13th 2008

I sincerly hope this is a rumor. I wouldn't mind the movie being 5 hours long, just don't spilt it in half! That would ruin the 7 books=7 movies.

Posted by kryntal Jan 13th 2008

I say Tim Burton should direct the last one!

Posted by Lolaa Jan 13th 2008

GUILLERMO DEL TORO (PAN'S LABIRYNTH) SHOULD DIRECT DEATHLY HALLOWS...he'd be perfect

Posted by rainandersen Jan 13th 2008

I'd be much more comfortable if Yates filmed the last movie. I trust his filming and his interpretation of the books. I wouldn't be happy if I saw someone like Spielberg directing it. As far as two films, I'd be totally happy with it. You've seen it will Kill Bill, they came out in two volumes with such close release dates. Grindhouse released two movies in one film which would be a fun idea to play with instead of using volumes. I think it would be a nice closure to the series. The opportunities to openly celebrate the books are slim to none these days. There are no more book releases and films take time to make. I think creating two films for the last book would be like one giant toast to the series.

Posted by professorlongbottom Jan 13th 2008

Kryntal- I agree with you! I adore Tim Burton's work and he'd make the death scenes and the battle at the end exciting and dark and perfect! I think we should contact Warner Bros.! =]

Posted by rooon Jan 13th 2008

That's rad.

Posted by professorlongbottom Jan 13th 2008

Ugh, I despise Yates' filming! In my opinion, OOTP was the worst movie out of the series. It was horrible to watch. It did not do the book a single ounce of justice.

Posted by LadySandy Jan 13th 2008

That is wonderful news if it is true. I doubt it though. JK Rowling said that there are 7 books so there will be 7 movies. The best they could do is make it an extended film. I have been extremely disappointed with the movies beginning with PoA since they cut so much stuff, it did not do the books any justice. They could do it like a 4-5 hour movie with an intermission of say 20 minutes (like they did in Gone with the Wind) so that the kids who watch it could take a break. I sincerely think that they should make the film a lot longer so that they could do the book and the series justice. If they make a longer movie, as suggested above, it would at least address a lot of the things that they did not include in the other movies. They could make the best Harry Potter movie ever and everyone would love it. The movies (3-5) have been better when it came to special effects, but they still did not flow properly. I really wish that they would really go all out with the last book - Deathly Hollows. I also never heard of Steven King being considered and he could be good, but please not Alfonso Cuaron. He will just butcher it like he did with PoA. The current directors and producers for HBP are perfect enough in my opinion.

Posted by 593hp6 Jan 13th 2008

How about J.K. Rowling direct the film THAT WOULD BE PERFECT. Can someone answer my question above.

Posted by professorlongbottom Jan 13th 2008

593hp6- What do you need help with? Aren't you right?

Posted by GABZx3 Jan 13th 2008

i really dont care if its split in two or not, as long as they put as much info as possible from the book.

Posted by LadySandy Jan 13th 2008

Tonks is Sirius's cousin and niece to Bellatrix.

Posted by BeeHermione Jan 13th 2008

I personally think that if J.K. Rowling is pleased with the films, then we should be as well. Yes, they often have to cut out A LOT of things that we would have loved to see, but at least Yates was true to the characters and their personalities and a good portion of the lines came directly out of the book. I still wouldn't be terribly opposed to the splitting of Deathly Hallows into two films.

Posted by rooon Jan 13th 2008

Let's see if we can get to 1, 500 comments.....

Posted by professorlongbottom Jan 13th 2008

PoA was the best movie in the series! What do you think the best movie in the series was then, LadySandy?

Posted by 593hp6 Jan 13th 2008

I posted a question way above can some one help me?

Posted by BeeHermione Jan 13th 2008

And Freddie_Phoenix, if you're right and Steven Spielberg=John Williams, then I think I do hope Steven Spielberg directs DH. I see your point, though, 593hp6. I did hear that he passed up the offer on Sorcerer's Stone. That book was considerably lighter than the darker-themed Deathly Hallows, though, so that's got to be taken into consideration.

LADYSANDY what is Sirius' relation to Bellatrix

Posted by LilyFan564 Jan 13th 2008

I think that this may be true because I just saw them talking about it on the news. They wouldn't have it on the news if it was just a silly rumor. But anyway, I'm very excited to see it! The last one :(!

Posted by Bushy Jan 13th 2008

I think its a good idea. more movies for us!!!!!! It would get in a lot more detail than the last few movies had.

Posted by hedwighummer Jan 13th 2008

Sweet! The more detail, the better. But I wouldn't mind if it were just one 7 hour long movie. I'd sit through it. I mean, it's HP. Plus, 7 IS the most magical of all numbers. And I can see where two parts would kind of interrupt the flow of things, and it would suck if you had to wait a long time between seeing both movies. So, yes, 7 hour long movie, who's with me?

Posted by mmesnape Jan 13th 2008

593hp6: Sirius is Bella's cousin. (They're both Blacks!)

Posted by dirtetimo13 Jan 13th 2008

Please let this be true! The 7th book is so amazing. I think two films will do it justice. I feel like Order could have been given the same treatment. I am willing to be patient to get the movie I need.

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers Jan 13th 2008

How are some of you against it?!?! That would be amazing! They need to include all of the book and not cut out a bunch of stuff like in the other movies. I would love to watch another movie, no matter how long we have to wait between the release!

Posted by member_of_SPEW Jan 13th 2008

PETER JACKSON FOR DH!!!!!

Posted by deathly101 Jan 13th 2008

i have no idea what i fell about this but it cud be rly kool i it happened. but then i'll have to wait so much more time to see the ending cuz i rly wanna see the end of deathly hallows!!!!!!!!!!!! i wanna see how voldy died on screen n i wanna see it in 3-d!!!

Posted by elilea Jan 13th 2008

This is the problem with longer books, there is more content to pack in when it's time for a movie adaption. No, I'd rather the Harry Potter series be done with already. I love the books and movies, but making Half-Blood Princ into a two parter will only serve to bolster the pockets of the those who will profit, nothing else. For that reason alone I am strongly against it. No need to rob fans of their hard-earned cash.

Posted by Jimmy_D Jan 13th 2008

I think this will be great like then they can finally do the Harry Potter books some justice like after the 3rd movie, I felt they skipped some parts. Especially in the 6th film like I would love to see Dobby in there. They better not cut Dobby if they make two films since they have no excuse to cut him off. I think a 4-5 hour movie would be great though. The only bad thing about this would be sitting through it all like my butt might get sore. Only parts I can think should be cut are part of the camping scenes. Hope they release them both at the same time then because one movie like 1 year after the other is stupid. All for two movies though! Do it some justice WB!

Posted by 593hp6 Jan 13th 2008

I know they are both blacks but can you answer all parts of the family relations between SIRIUS, TONKS, and BELLATRIX. Here is what I said before. Sirius is supposed to be both Tonks and Bellatrix's cousins I think it says that in the books. But Bellatrix is Tonks Aunt and if this is true how is Sirius both their cousin. SOMEONE ANSWER THIS FULLY. I already know Bellatrix was a Black.

Posted by kalb Jan 13th 2008

I'm not too happy about The Hobbit being broken into two movies. The book was smaller than all three individual LOTR books and that epic got one movie per book. I think HP should be the same, each book gets one movie. I wouldn't mind if movie 7 was as long as Return of the King, though. The longer the better. I'd sit through 3 plus hours.

Posted by kalb Jan 13th 2008

Bellatrix is Tonks's aunt. Here is the family tree JKR drew up herself. http://www.hp-lexicon .org/wizards/blackfamilyt ree.html

Posted by NicoleM Jan 13th 2008

I would love if Spielberg directed Deathly Hallows, but my first choice would be Tim Burton. I love a lot of his movies. And as for Deathly Hallows being cut in two parts? I am not so sure if I should be happy about that or not.

Posted by kalb Jan 13th 2008

This drawing is even more complete. http://en.wikipedia.org/w iki/Sirius_Black

Posted by sillyme Jan 13th 2008

SOME NEWS FINALLYYYYY! i think that if the separation includes more plot into the movie, and includes some of the book's really amazing lines and scenes, then im all for it. however, where would the split be? there isn't really a part one and two of the movie. the only places i can think of are after harry and hermione jump out of the window of bathilda's house, when ron pulls harry from the frozen pond/after harry and ron destroy the locket. it just doesn't seem like the kind of plot that has a part one and part two.

Posted by IAteUmbridge Jan 13th 2008

Huh. IF this is actually true, what are they going to call these two movies? Surely not Deathly Hallows part one and Deathly Hallows part two. Maybe they could use "Elder Wand" for the second part, since Jo almost used that title, and the first one could conclude with the tale of the three brothers, so it would be deathly hallows? Idk. That feels like such a huge deviation though. I assume the movies would be released only a few months apart? As for director, I would love Mike Newell to return. Anyone but Cuaron, who ruined the masterpiece that was PoA.

*coughpodcastcough* excuse me

Posted by Million024 Jan 13th 2008

THIS HAS GOT TO BE TRUE!! IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS IN MINNESOTA

mugglecast is going to be tomorrow, it said on the site...good for me :) you are right, iateumbridge (nice username btw) what will they call the first and second parts? part one and two makes the most sense for me. it could be deathly hallows part one: hallows vs. horcruxes. deatlhy hallows part two: a near death experience. or maybe 'the final battle'.

Harry learned quickly not to feel too sorry for the gnomes. He decided just to drop the first one he caught over the hedge, but the gnome, sensing weakness, sank its razor-sharp teeth into Harry's finger and he had a job shaking it off — until — "Wow, Harry — that must've been fifty feet..."
