Deathly Hallows film to be split in two parts?
Deathly Hallows film to be split in two parts? UPDATE: Empire Online is now quoting WB as saying "no decision has been made," in part because no script exists yet. Steve Kloves cannot begin work on the Deathly Hallows script because of the US writer's strike. We'll let you know more once we hear it!

Several visitors have sent in this article from the Daily Mail, which claims crews working on Half-Blood Prince have been told the final film will be split:

A film source said: "There's so much to fit that the view is the last movie should be in two halves. There is a huge battle when Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, takes on Voldemort that needs to be done really well."

What's more, the Daily Mail claims that big name directors such as Steven Spielberg are being considered to direct Deathly Hallows. We'll look into this rumor and let you know what Warner Brothers has to say!

If this is the case then hopefully they do a quick after release like they did with Kill Bill. There's no way I'd be able to wait another year after.

i think it will be great if the movie is split into two. i am pretty sure they will not make one long movie that is like 3 hours because i dont know if little kids can sit still for that long. so splitting it into two will be great - it wont be as choppy in the plot like ootp was, we'll get more potter frenzy, and wb will make more money. sounds good to me. i dont know about the authenticity of daily mail at all though.

COME ON GUYS THIS IS A RUMOUR! HEY AND DID YOU GUYS HERE THAT GUILLERMO DEL TORO SAID HE WANTS TO DIRECT DEATHLY HALLOWS NOW! NOW HOW AWESOME IS THAT! HE SAID HE WANTED TO NO BECAUSE IT'S DARK, AND HE CAN DO SO MANY THINGS WITH IT AND STILL BE VERY FAITHFUL LIKE HE WAS WITH HELLBOY! IF DAVID YATES DOESN'T WANNA DO THE LAST ONE, PIC DEL TORO!

Oh, I would not be surprised if Movie 7 is split into a Movie 7a & 7b. There IS a lot of material in the Deathly Hallows that should be covered. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't filming some of the scenes for Movie 7 right now. For example, the scene in the book where Dumbledore injures his hand and Snape helps him would be a good one to film (or at least block) during the filming of Movie 6. Personally, I would prefer that the movie NOT be split. I would be willing to sit through a much longer movie (3 even 4 hours), if the film is able to do justice to the novel. After all, I sat through TLOTR.

Posted by seb123nh Jan 13th 2008

There are way too many comments to read so sorry if I am repeating what already said. I'm not sure how I fell about splitting the movie in two. I think it would be better to just make one longer movie (like aprox 3hr or less). I am placing this rumor on the shelf right above the one about the Harry potter musical :) I think it is likely that making Deathly Hallows into two movies has been discussed but not a definite. BUT I definitely do not think they would want Stephen Spielberg to direct, only because the material that is in Deathly Hallows. I think they will want to go with someone who has already directed one of the HP movies or someone a bit more artsy than Spielberg (no offense to the man but *insert long explanation here*)

Posted by janegallagher Jan 13th 2008

i'll be incredibly surprised if this comes to pass. i mean, it just screams "tabloid bull." i like the idea in some ways though, just because it would allow them to include more of the subplots (and even the main plot) that they'd otherwise have to cut for time.

Posted by sillyme Jan 13th 2008

hey we all thought the theme park was a rumor! and we also thought that about dan coming to bdway! loll. im so psyched. it means we have three more movies to look forward to, instead of two. it also means that we will be more relieved than sad when dh pt. 2 comes out cuz then we can watch the whole movie! and we wont be as sad when it comes out. well, if it is a rumor, ill be fine as well, i guess, but it still lots of fun to talk about, because our news was deaaaad

Posted by grintloverr Jan 13th 2008

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! YAYAYYY this is great they better not cut anything im completely willing to sit threw a seven hour movie haha itd be greattt

Posted by Hogwarts_Forever Jan 13th 2008

I'd say this is a rumour... just cos of what' s been said. besides heaps of people say stuff about 'split movies'

Posted by Ballistics Jan 13th 2008

I think this is a very interesting idea. I mean, I could definitely sit through an extra long movie, especially if it was Harry Potter. I do however agree that there's a ton to fit in, and I'd rather see it all in two then have just one movie with gaps.

Posted by nevilles_soulmate Jan 13th 2008

I'd like that. Then I wouldn't have to say goodbye so soon. :(

Posted by hryptr101 Jan 13th 2008

Im not all gunhoe about this...BUT if they decide to split it in two films, they would HAVE to be released in the same year! Like, one in July the other in NOV! There is NO WAY I'm waiting a year to two years for the conclusion to the most epic part of this series! We've waited to long to have these movies split in two, but, if its done....so be it.

Posted by BellaBlack7 Jan 13th 2008

THANK GOD, I was hoping this would happen. I would hate to see this movie not done well, and you can't fit that much into a 2 or 3 hour movie. Look how much they had to cut out of OOTP! You can't do that with DH, almost everything is relevant. The only thing I could see getting cut from that movie is the preparation for the wedding and the time they spent camping. But the important scenes are going to need to be really long in order to understand the ending and everything else.

Posted by Ferder Jan 13th 2008

This is obviously just a tabloid story. There is nothing legitimate about it. Never trust a news source that cites "a spokes person" and " an insider source" as who they are getting their information from. Speilberg? These people are really quite uncreative when trying to make up their stories if they can only think to throw in the name of the world's most well-known director. Plus, of all the books, Deathly Hallows is one of the more adaptable ones. Just think of how much was covered in The Fellowship of the Ring (another similarly-staged quest story)

Posted by rooon Jan 13th 2008

Cool........

Posted by LilyFan564 Jan 13th 2008

This can't be a rumor because my mom saw it on the news and then i did on a different news channel later on! If being in two parts means that they will keep more stuff in the movie then let it be in 2 parts!! The more the merrier!!

Posted by grednforge Jan 13th 2008

noo! As much as I wanna see it, I don't wanna have to pay TWICE every time I go to see it. They should just make it like a 4 hour long movie. Honestly, I wouldn't mind.

Posted by edm318is Jan 13th 2008

though i doubt it would happen, i think a split could work. look at it this way, DH was roughly split into two parts in my opinion. the first part consisting of context mainly dealing with the locket and the second part consisting of the tracking down of the remaining horcruxes and the final hogwarts battle. Therefore, the first movie could be solely about the finding of the locket, its effect on the trio, and its ultimate destruction. i think that would bring a bit of closure and would be a good stopping point for the first film, whereas the second film can concentrate mostly on the final confrontation between harry and voldemort, which needs to be done carefully and very well. i believe a split is a good idea, though a good number of ppl will think otherwise. DH is the most important book of the series as is any final chapter of a saga. it ties everything together at the end and cutting out a lot of material could ruin it.

Posted by GryffindorRyan Jan 13th 2008

I think that it would be awesome for Steven Spielberg to direct DH but I don't know about splitting the movie in two.

593hp6 Sirius and Tonks are cousins. Bellatrix and Sirius are cousins. Tonks mother is the sister of Bellatrix. Tonks, therefore is the niece of Bellatrix. The child of your aunt/uncle is your cousin. In some cultures, the child of your cousin is also your cousin. professorlongb ottom The first two Harry Potter movies are in my opinion the best in the series. They were complete and true to the books. The rest were a part here and a part there and not much flow in the story line. The special effects got better as the series progressed but they had a lot of missing parts - a lot of important information was not on the films. The films could not stand alone. So if you really never read the book and you never saw any Potter films, you would not really have understood why things happened the way they did. PoA is in my opinion the worse of them all. It was a great disappointment.

Posted by taylor77139 Jan 13th 2008

I dont see why they just cant make it into like a three hour movie....But i do love the idea of an entire movie based just at the last portion of the book at hogwarts....I mean can you imagine the detail it would be amazing to see.As far as Spielberg directing I think it would be a good idea. In my opinon none of the directors up to this point have done a very good job(with the exception of maybe Chris Chlombus) so I think it might be good to give him a try...Although I think the best idea would be to have Jo direct herself. Yea she knows nothing about makeing films but can you just imagine seeing it through her eyes......

Posted by thepottertwins Jan 13th 2008

I think this would be the best thing to happen to the Harry Potter movies. Maybe they'd acctually be able to fit some of the details that we love into them. =D My twin sister and both love the idea. In fact, we were debating on where we'd like the split to be. This would be great!

Posted by pottercakes Jan 13th 2008

Hmmmm I don't know how I feel about it. I would like to prolong this as much as possible, but then again, watching one half and then waiting to watch the other just seems very anticlamatic to me. DH was such a good book, I'm not sure splitting it will do it more good or more harm. And it would ruin the 7 parts thing, which Jo worked so hard to preserve. But Spielberg?? NOOOOOOOOO. He's good for ET and stuff, but he's no Harry Potter type. Why can't they just keep David Yates, or have Columbus close it, as some have suggested? Peter Jackson did good for the LotR, but he was a die-hard fan of those books, and I don't think he's got the LotR passion for Harry Potter. But this is all probably a rumor anyway. And even if it was split into 2 and had most of the scenes, we fans would still find mistakes to point out :D

Posted by ShikenFreiRye Jan 13th 2008

I don't know if anyone has posted yet but I know Spielburg was going to start working on Jurassic Park 4 and Transformers 2, among others after Indiana Jones. Even though he's just producing all of them, he would have a hard for him to produce 4 movies AND direct a movie, or even two. .. Just my 2 cents worth.

Posted by Get_sirius Jan 13th 2008

THEY BETTER NOT SPLIT THE FILM OR.......OR..........OR ELSE!!!!!!

Posted by iwantorlando05 Jan 14th 2008

If they do get Speilberg to do the 7th film then it WILL BE RUINED!!!! He's a good director and everything, but not for movies like Harry Potter. Warner Bros asked him to direct the first one and he wanted to make it into an ANIMATED film and have HALEY JOEL OSMENT do the voice of Harry Potter, but THANK GOD Jk rowling shut him down. So if that's what his vision was for Harry Potter: A freakin' CARTOON!! then he clearly does not understand the darkness of Harry Potter and therefore does NOT need to direct one of them. I can't think of one dark film Speilberg has done anyways, he's way too bubble gum pop and "everyone lives happily ever afterish" for me. I hope they get one of the previous directors to do movie 7, hopefully, Alfonso Cuaron or David Yates. But if they have to get a new director then I think Guillermo del Toro would do an awesome job. He's really good with darker side of things, Pan's Labyrinth is amazing.

Posted by moviebuff Jan 14th 2008

this would be an excellent news, it this happens to be true... this is really exciting news for us. the HP hype will never end. not w/ the theme park and possibly 3 more movies...

Posted by lolstarz Jan 14th 2008

although i think the film will be better, i dun like it what about hbp-hpdh trilogy?

Posted by EloquentPhoenix Jan 14th 2008

I think that they have some nerva after destroying the previous books to want to do this one really well. And, well, it is the Daily Mail. I'm taking it with a huge pinch of salt, personally.

Posted by HPFANTimothy Jan 14th 2008

Hmm that's odd. Where did my before comment go?

Posted by MiracleMira Jan 14th 2008

They should've done that with every movie since Goblet of fire. The more HP the better .At least they'll be able to leave more of the plot in - actually tie up all the loose ends of the series. I'd love it if they did the last one in 2 parts though it does seem unlikely if you ask me. If Spielberg and other famous directors are considering making it well I'd love to see the result.I just hope whoever they choose that he's good and that he really cares for the movies and isn't just jumping on the project cause it's a huge one with great popularity.

Posted by laughingeyes927 Jan 14th 2008

OH. MY. GOD. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't decide if I like this idea or not! I really don't think I like the idea of Steven Speilberg directing it though. Can't we just have Chris Columbus or Alfonso Curon or David Yates again? They all did such a fantastic job and their styles were perfect for the movies! I just don't see Steven Speilberg doing it.

Posted by Freddie_Phoenix Jan 14th 2008

I think it's slightly amusing that some people just can't be happy no matter what happens. If DH were to be one movie, people would scream "MAKE IT TWO MOVIES darn!!!111" and now when it might be split into two movies people are yelling "IT SHOULD ONLY BE ONE!!!111". Amusing. You just can't please everyone, I guess. And about directors... if John Williams wants to compose music for the last one (as he has previously indicated) then we're either going to see Columbus, Cuaron or Spielberg (although I doubt the last one). If not, then get ready for someone we have barely heard about before (who is still likely to do an excellent job with the material he has, although the poor sod will be hated by half of the HP fans). And no matter who it is, cue the manic screams of rabid fans all over the world going "NOOOO, WE WANTED [insert name here]!!! WHY?!!11 I'M NEVER WATCHING A HARRY POTTER MOVIE EVER AGAIN!!!111". Oh well. As I said: Amusing.

Posted by SiruslyStupefyed Jan 14th 2008

Now here's a chance for the mighty HP fan base to make a statement. I challenge Mugglenet to set up a letter writing campaign or "sign on" petition to WarnerBros urging WB to make Deathly Hallows into either a 3+ hour movie or 2 2-hour movies. It's our last change to prove the power (& magic) of the HP fandom. There's just too much important stuff in DH to have it hacked down into just 130 minutes. Sadly the screen write is probably already done and as that's the base for the movie, it might be to late for us to speak out. accio petition!

Posted by bscorp Jan 14th 2008

I can't see this as a bad thing. Let them have two movies, I don't care if it's fro extra $$$ or not. There is just TOO MUCH to cover in DH in order to make the story sensible. Hell, it was crowded enough just as a book. I still had to go back and re-read the volume to make sense of some parts and put it all together. Go For IT!.

Posted by peytonpiimpin Jan 14th 2008

I think this is really stupid thing. They should just make the whole freakin' movie 5 hours long and deal with it. I'd stay in Deathly Hallows if it was 13 hours long. And didn't Steven Spielburg decline the director's job unless Haley Joel Osment plays Harry?

Posted by candice Jan 14th 2008

I DON'T THINK IT WILL BE SPLIT INTO TWO. BUT WHATEVER THEY DO WITH IT, I HOPE IT REACHES THE OSCARS. C'MON, IT'S THE LAST MOVIE! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO HOPE FOR?

Posted by SpiffySilpion Jan 14th 2008

Oh Jebus God, PLEASE don't let Spielberg be the director of DH!!!!!!!!!!!! Kill Bill showed us that splitting a movie can work so I'm not too worried if it does end up in two parts. I really just don't want Spielberg to direct it. Bring back Alfonso Cuaron! He's already proven what he can work wonders with an HP script.

Posted by Dobby4ever Jan 14th 2008

I like the idea of splitting the movie in two. If they split it there will be more movie, and thye won't have to cut out a lot of good scenes. There are soo many scenes I would love to see in the movie. And about Steven Spielberg.. it sounds interesting.

Posted by OneWingedAngel Jan 14th 2008

2 parts for just one movie??? mmmm... what's this? KILL BILL????

Posted by lozzypop96 Jan 14th 2008

i think that i will be bad if they split it in 2. ppl have read the books and they want to watch the films. like me 4 example. if they havent read the books, then they will want to know what happens next, u cant keep us waiting, youve keept us waiting long enough already! on the other hand, i agree with felixfelics888. cum on, its HP! THE MORE THE MERRIER! THEY SDHOULD PUT EVERY SINGLE WORD IN, I COULD SIT THROUGH A WEEKS WORTH OF HP FILMS! so, really, i don't mind, as long as they both cum out at the same time by the way, if u r reading this, good chose of name feixfelicis888, the lucky potion from HP and the half blood prince! good chose!

Posted by Kraize Jan 14th 2008

I think in the end it would be great to have two movies (as if I'd say no to more harry potter, pffft). But it does bring up three things: 1) I won't say it was "slow" because it's not that I didn't like it or anything, but in terms of a film (and for non-crazy HP fans) the first half of the book wasn't particularly movie friendly. Brings up how they would end the first half and stuff 2) It would mean waiting, but I would definately take it if they did it RIGHT 3) They've never done it before, I don't know why they would start now, but who knows But I know I would TOTALLY watch a full scale, single movie no matter how long it was in the end lol. I say hand everyone a book and there's the script.

Posted by Opaque Jan 14th 2008

Spielberg? Oh God no. Don't these people watch South Park?

Posted by Dani456 Jan 14th 2008

THis is fabulous!!! Yaaaaay!!! Im shaking!! This is just what the book needs!!!! :D

Posted by HPtears101 Jan 14th 2008

i'm not believing anything yet, but if they do... FINALLY!

Posted by Aragog1000 Jan 14th 2008

I'd prefer to have 7 movies for 7 books. For lovers of the books, there's no way the movies will compare in terms of sheer depth. It's been said before, but they are wildly different mediums. Yes scenes will be cut and trimmed, your favorite part will be left woefully absent even if there are two movies. I think there will probably be just one. It will be edited to under 3 hours, because 3 hours is the magic number of when people don't want to sit through it and being able to cram enough show times into one day. With the cuts inevitable, obviously the camping scenes will but cut, and wedding scenes trimmed. regardless, we'll all see it and be happy and sad just like when we finished the last page. There's a couple years to wait, so I'm sure the rumors will fly. I hope the retain a previous director for continuity's sake. I'd also like to see a short scene at the end of the credit that mimics the epilogue chapter 15 years later. just my 2 cents.

Posted by hooked_on_Harry Jan 14th 2008

Not sure if anyone else thought of this but how about a 4 hour movie with a 15-20 minute intermission! Plenty of time to put EVERY SINGLE WORD and everything else that needs to be in the movie. I of course would also sit through a 10 movie but then that's just me. Hopefully, WB & David Heyman will pick the right director for DH. What about the music? Someone new or could we get John Williams one more time? just my opinion. (even thou i do OotP soundtrack!)

Posted by LaurenB Jan 14th 2008

I don't like it, but I guess it's better than having it butchered beyond recognition. 300th post?
