Deathly Hallows film to be split in two parts?
Deathly Hallows film to be split in two parts? UPDATE: Empire Online is now quoting WB as saying "no decision has been made," in part because no script exists yet. Steve Kloves cannot begin work on the Deathly Hallows script because of the US writer's strike. We'll let you know more once we hear it!

Several visitors have sent in this article from the Daily Mail, which claims crews working on Half-Blood Prince have been told the final film will be split:

A film source said: "There's so much to fit that the view is the last movie should be in two halves. There is a huge battle when Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, takes on Voldemort that needs to be done really well."

What's more, the Daily Mail claims that big name directors such as Steven Spielberg are being considered to direct Deathly Hallows. We'll look into this rumor and let you know what Warner Brothers has to say!

I think it's about time they did something like this, if they're actually doing it. I don't think they'd be able do do DH justice otherwise, there's just so much to squeeze in there. As for directors, I think Tim Burton would make a really good hp movie. Or maybe that's just my Tim Burton obsession talking.

Posted by rubys007 Jan 14th 2008

I don't care if it's ONE movie or TWO..As long as they don't cut Xenophilius Lovegood and they CAST SIR IAN MCKELLAN as that character!!!

Posted by Kareen Jan 14th 2008

DH split into two? Ummmmm...? Is that necessarily a good idea? I mean it would be for the plot and everything so that they could fit more into it, but i mean, even Lord of the Rings managed to fit in a ton of the plotline into 3 hours.

Posted by EchelonGirl Jan 14th 2008

Although I really don't want Spielberg involved in this project, I really do like the idea of splitting it into two "volumes", like what Tarantino did with Kill Bill. There's just way too much in the book to sift through to make one successful movie and I really believe they'll please all die-hard Potter fans by dividing it into two and getting more out of the book onto the screen. In my humble opinion, I don't think Spielberg could successfully get Harry Potter onto the screen without ruining it in some way. Even Chris Colombus MIGHT be good, but they need to find someone that won't let the nature of the book get swallowed by overdone special effects. They also NEEEEEED to bring back John Williams to do the music!!!! The man is a genius and captured the magic of Harry's world in song PERFECTLY! Nothing against Nicholas Hooper (who I felt was 2nd in scoring the series next to John Williams), but I would love to see it happen!

Posted by naazju Jan 14th 2008

If they can make the two films work well together then I'm all for it. And if they actually include events from the book rather than making something up themselves. However, and this has been brought up in other discussions, I think Tim Burton directing the last film would be amazing. It's kind of right up his alley, don't you think?

If they can do it in 1939 for Gone With the Wind, which ran 3 hours and 55 minutes, they can do it in 2010 (?) for Deathly Hallows. Old solution was an intermission for 15 minutes and then back for two more hours of movie. Funny this story came up. I just wrote my first fan letter ever, to David Heyman asking him to pester Warner Brothers about an extended film to do it justice This is my first login to Mugglenet...How did I do?

Posted by TheLadyKT Jan 14th 2008

I have no problem with it as long as the wait between the two isn't too bad. No more than a year I'd say. 2 years is too long..... JMHO

Posted by RoseMclane Jan 14th 2008

Sir Ian McKeLllan ? Hes a bit old isn't he? I think is a bad idea to have him play Another white haired guy. People will be like " OMG, It Gandolf !!! " No, just pick someone else, Please I don't want Spielberg either . I love Peter Jackson, final battle /w him, FANTASTIC!!! Maybe him and Yates can work together !! I posted before but I didn't add that I would prefer for them to make a 4 hour movie. I would sit through that or longer. But I'm split on making two. I would be fine with two only if it came out around the same time. ( 1st July 9th -2nd between July and August ) I don't want to have to wait months to a year for the rest of the film. I'm really starting to not believe this, wont they lose money. Will the movie fans pay twice for this or will they not see it because they think HP being milked. I don't know but I know that movie is going to be amazing, cant wait !!

Posted by Godric_83 Jan 14th 2008

yay i wouldn't mind having the movie split into two!!!! more dealthly hallows, but steven spielberg??? can he do it? can he turn deathly hallows into the best movie?? can he take that challenge?? i don't know....

Posted by Ginny_Weasly_rocks_13 Jan 14th 2008

hey its me ginny (lilly) srry if i havent been on in a while how is everybody!?!?!?!?!?!?! could someone please fill me in on this whole two part thing im really lost! lol ;)

Posted by sillyme Jan 14th 2008

he can't begin work because of the writer's strike? wtf? that means we are going to have to wait AGES for it to come out. all my favv. shows/movies are going down the drainnn.

Posted by hpfan382 Jan 14th 2008

I think it's a bad idea to split the movie into two parts, just make a 3-4 hour movie. People sat through it for LOTR, why not HP?

Posted by Thandy Jan 14th 2008

AWESOME! Its about time for those who actly took initiative to read the books get something worth watching. Cant wait!

Posted by dancefool1 Jan 14th 2008

Wait, I thought that the writer's strike wasn't going to affect the Harry Potter movies???? You guys, this is bad. The movies are going to be pushed back (At least possibly.) because they haven't given in yet. I have a gut feeling that this is gonna be bad for the movies.

Posted by Kaylad Jan 14th 2008

Geez I know I am going to get put down by Harry Potter book fans but I am going to say it anyway. I am glad that they might end up doing that and I hope they do. If they don't I will be happy anyways. I love the movies and I have read the books........not all of them but I have read them and they are great. I am so glad that J.K. Rowling came up with this wonderful story. But yeah it would be nice to see the movie split into 2 parts I guess. Either way I think everyone who has worked on alll the movies did a great job. Daniel is a brave and talented young man and he has come a long way with playing Harry. So to the people working on the movies do what ya gotta do :)

Posted by CyborgGT Jan 14th 2008

Aw fudge yeah! The longer the better, but it would suck if the two parts were released separately, especially if they were far apart. I have no problem sitting in a theater for four or five hours. Spielberg, though, huh? I hope it's true. I'll have to look into this writer's strike thing. I didn't think it was such a big deal at first, but the way you put it ("Steve Kloves cannot begin work on the Deathly Hallows script because of the US writer's strike"), it... yeah... serious business. Here's to hoping the trio don't look too old to play their parts!

Posted by McMuggle7 Jan 14th 2008

I would like to see Steven Spielberg direct the last movie or Tim Burton, and maybe possibly Michael Bay, but I do like Clint Eastwood. I don't know, anyone except Alfonso Cuaron. And people don't worry, the American writers srike will not affect a British film.

Posted by roxorgirl13 Jan 14th 2008

If it being split into two means more of the movie, then im totllay fo it!

Posted by britishwannabe Jan 14th 2008

I agree totally with felixfelicis888. They should keep the EXACT SAME WORDS/LINES in the movie that was used in the book!!!!! I'm all for a 10 hour movie!!!!!!!!! So, as Lauren Fairweather would say: YAYYYYYYYYYYY!

COME ON PPLLLLLLL GROW UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 DANG MAN FOR REAL!!!!!!!!! 2 PARTS + GOOD DIRECTOR - CRAPPY DIRECTOR = GOOD MOVIE + NOT TAKING STUFF OUT FROM BOOK. ISNT THAT WHAT U WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! HOLY CRAP

Posted by i_am_hermione Jan 14th 2008

I think they should justmake it really long rather than split it in to two parts, as felixfelicis888, britishwannabe, dannyrob, and pretty much everyone else said. I wonder if it'll happen . . . I hope so! the fifth movie was far from being long enough and DH neeeeeeeeds to be!! long!!

Posted by dannyrob15 Jan 14th 2008

thats y its good to make it two parts rite? i mean they have to make money! ur not supposed to have a freakin 6 hour movie. its not allowed. thats y u make 2 parts. i dont see the problem. we get more hp. i dont noe wat everyones whining about

Posted by alisomniac Jan 14th 2008

This likely won't happen.... they said the same thing about GOF and OOTP.... true, it is a long story full of much information, but there also is no mini-climax with which to end "Part 1".... reading it felt like a car chase scene in the movies.... no logical breaking point. the movie would be the same, and very much lessened if broken in half. I think they can cut a lot of time by eliminating certain sequences (doping MOM employees for example), compacting the camping time into one or two stops, limiting "planning time" and re-sequencing hte battle of Hogwarts events into a more linear story instead of run here, run there run back to area 1 run to area 4 etc...

Posted by weasleyisdaking10 Jan 14th 2008

fine but they have 2 come out like a week apart!

Posted by rubys007 Jan 14th 2008

Look, if they don't make 2 films, you can already guess what will get cut: Bill and Fleur's wedding (maybe even Bill and Fleur and Shell Cottage PERIOD) all that time with Harry and Hermione in the forest, perhaps they would even cut all that stuff at Godric's Hollow...Certainly the Snape flashback would get cut as well since it takes people out of the action of the battle at hogwarts. Can u think of anything else they might cut?

Posted by SmickChickHPlover Jan 14th 2008

I was just watch E!'s Daily 10 and they also stated that DH will be a two part movie...

Posted by dannyrob15 Jan 14th 2008

they can make part one the events leading up to the battle then part 2 the battle and the end. its not that hard. they can figure it out. a 4th grader could do it.

Posted by rooon Jan 14th 2008

That actually might be a good thing because it could mean that the films are going to be longer! : )

Posted by halfbloodprince2006 Jan 14th 2008

This message is directed to iLeo, 1 day ago: Alfonso did a crappy job on Prisoner of Azkaban... It was retarded and cut out so much stuff that I feel should have been there. It mentioned the Marauders but did nothing to explain who they were. It only mentioned that James, Sirius, Lupin and Pettigrew were friends at school, not that they were the Marauders. And what was up with the black shrouds exiting and entering every scene? Totally dumb. I feel that if Chris Columbus would have taken the film, it would've been better. Cuaron has had some good movies, I'm not saying that he's a bad director, because Children of Men was outstanding, but his version of Prisoner plainly sucked.

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers Jan 14th 2008

That dumb writers strike is effecting everything!

Posted by BeeHermione Jan 14th 2008

What needs to happen is the writers get whatever it is that they want, because clearly we need them, and they've made their point. I want my Deathly Hallows ASAP. Not that I'm over-eager... I'm not looking forward to having nothing to look forward to....

Posted by HermioneTwin101 Jan 14th 2008

#1: HATE the writers strike, setting everything back. #2: Two DH movies? I would rather have a very long movie and they get everything in, than have to wait for the second part to come out after already waiting two years after HBP. ANNNNNNDD the battle between Harry and Voldemort is like one of the best parts so I don't want it to be cut off from the rest of the film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by gecm231990 Jan 14th 2008

i dont mind them splitting the film in two... i think it would be great for them to end the series with a great big finale... hopefully John Williams returns to do the score, and they definately shouldnt leave Spielberg out of talks... his movies generally tend to be amazing... i just cant wait for number 7 to come out...
