Deathly Hallows movie split gains momentum
Deathly Hallows movie split gains momentum The Daily Telegraph has a new article today focusing on the continuing rumors of the final Potter film being split into two parts. When these rumors started one month ago, all we heard from WB was a big "no decision has been made." Today, we hear from the film's producers:

From David Barron: "We are still discussing it. The announcement will be made hopefully in the not-too-distant future, with regards to the way seven shapes up," Barron tells The Back Room.

The only negative of splitting the book into two films, says Barron, "is that people could possibly perceive it as being one last chance at cashing in. But the real positive, if we were to do that, would be that we wouldn't have quite the battle we always have of 'How do you compress all that book into just over two hours of screen time?'

From David Heyman: "A couple of people have expressed interest, people have gotten a few calls and a few emails, but it's still a year away," Heyman says.

"We won't start filming 'til February next year. So it hasn't really gone bananas yet. We've got thoughts, and I'm sure something will be announced in the not-too-distant future."

We'll continue to update you on this story as we hear more. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

To me, this means they'll split it.. But I'm not sure if I like it..

Posted by Playwright06 Feb 11th 2008

second? NOOOO DOO NOT SPLIT THE MOVIE!!! If LoTR can be three hours, wy can't Harry POtter?

Posted by 6244225 Feb 11th 2008

Are you kidding?...This would be so amazing!!!!

Posted by metalwiz Feb 11th 2008

idiots...they HAVE TO SPLIT IT. there's too much important stuff that goes on in the book that cannot be crammed in a 3 hour movie. it's gonna have to be like 5 hours long...

Posted by Playwright06 Feb 11th 2008

6244225, don't take this as an offense, but what are the benifits of splitting a movie, especially one based on such an important book, in half? Yes, there is a lot of information, and it is important to do it justice, but there is nothing wrong with lengthening the time of the movie. Like I said before, if LoTR can be three hours and their loyal fans can sit through it, I don't see a reason as to why the seventh movie has to be split.

Posted by _FredWeasley_ Feb 11th 2008

Noo! Don't Split the Movie! It's not good. Grr.

Posted by Playwright06 Feb 11th 2008

I am positive that not a single Harry Potter fan will complain about having to sit through a five hour movie if it means getting every last detail about it correct. All in favor?

Posted by crumple_horned_snorkack22 Feb 11th 2008

wow, febriary of next year seems really soon, do they usually film 3 months after releasing the last movie? i personally don't think the movie should be split, but that's just my opinion. 8th!

Posted by tiassa Feb 11th 2008

YAY! split it after Bathilda's secret! It will be a great cliffhanger!

Posted by JeNaN Feb 11th 2008

well hm... how do you fit all of it in a two hour movie?? well i think maybe if you make it longer then two frickn hours... that would help. i kno i wouldnt mind sittin through a 4 hour movie. plus its gona be the last movie it has to be the best cuz if u mess up the last one no one is gona be happy. why cant they jus make the HP fans happy n make it longer? pfft. stupid people.

Posted by rob1007 Feb 11th 2008

2 hour movie... HONESTLY what would be a solution to that??? hmm idk maybe make it LONGER!!! i wouldnt mind sitting through a 4-5 hour movie [though my parents would lol] siriously with a intermission

Posted by tiassa Feb 11th 2008

@Playwright06--look I really dont have a problem sitting through a 10 hour movie, and I will go back to see it the next day, HOWEVER, the movie people are more concerened about this little thing called cash. and they know no grown up will take their kid for that(even though its not exactly for little kids). So we are never going to get a long movie. our only hope is for two movies.

Posted by ClaireBear Feb 11th 2008

Wow, I'm surprised that so many people are opposed to this. I too would prefer one longer movie (3-4 hours), but that's obviously not going to happen. So if I had to choose between 1 2 hour movie or the split, I'd pick the split.

Posted by smellysocks Feb 11th 2008

I would hate it if it split, how disappointing would it be to wait for weeks if not months between the films!! i would prefer a longer movie too, but why not have an intermission?!

Posted by EchelonGirl Feb 11th 2008

I don't even think 3 hours would hold the kind of battle that Deathly Hallows has in it. I really do hope they split it. Nevermind the scoffs who say WB's just after more money; this is the SUREFIRE way that Harry Potter fans will not be disappointed that the film doesn't touch on their favorite or crucial parts of the novel. I say split it. I know everyone'll be antsy waiting for Part 2 to come out and they'd rather see it all in one shot, but think about it: true fans will love it because it has very little cut out AND still ties up all loose ends. I really don't think they'll have us waiting too long for it. SPLIT IT!!!!

Posted by angelina_johnson92 Feb 11th 2008

I agree with smellysocks about this one with an intermission

Posted by LyraBelacqua Feb 11th 2008

Yeah have an intermission! Like in the good old days! I could cope with a 4 hours movie with an intermission!!

Posted by apwbdumbledore Feb 11th 2008

I think they ought to make 2 movies. I personally would prefere a 20 hour movie but that's not gonna happen, so, the more footage the better, make 2 movies. And who cares about the waiting we did so many years of waiting I don't mind a little more waiting if that meens that the DH Filmy will stick closer to the book.

Posted by Playwright06 Feb 11th 2008

If the movie has to be split, then I have to go with angelina_johnson92 and smellysocks. An intermission would be much better. And, tiassa, the directors and the producers do not have to worry about money. Harry Potter is one of the highest grossing franchises ever. As for kids, if they are unable to sit through a long movie, then do not take them. The influx of money will not decrease because a bunch of annoying five year-olds can't sit still. Also, I think that by saying that parents will not take kids to take their kids to an extended movie, you underestimate the fandom.

Posted by Stupefy Feb 11th 2008

what i'm wondering, is why would they have to fit it in "just over two hours"?? why can't they understand that it's OK to have a 3 hour movie?? i, personally, do not like the idea of splitting it... i just don't think it would make sense.. i could see a long movie with an intermission in it, but i just don't like the idea of 2 separate movies.

Posted by TheLadyKT Feb 11th 2008

I would much prefer that they make 2 movies so long as they can do justice to the story. I think that even just going to a 3 hour movie wouldn't cut it. There is just too much in the last book. While I LOVE the current movies, dont get me wrong, I feel almost gipped because there are side lines that are set aside to compress the movies into timelines. JMHO

Posted by Gryffindorfan221 Feb 11th 2008

Duh, they would have to split it if its going to be a 7 hour long movie!!!!

Posted by TheLadyKT Feb 11th 2008

So if they do choose to split it, what do you think would be a good place ot do it? Cliffhanger and all for the 2nd part? For me, I was thinking that right before Greyback(sp?) takes them to the Malfoy's would be a good place to break.

Posted by gryffindor_phoenix Feb 11th 2008

7 books = 7 films in my humble opinion. DH isn't the longest book, they can make it into one movie.

Posted by tiassa Feb 11th 2008

Playwright06, yes I know they have enough money already but that still goes into consideration. Also I do believe kids can understand this great book and I usually argue for that. however I dont think 5 years old (and I beileve 5 years old can understand a lot more then they are given credit for) can fully understand harry's desire to join his parents when seeing their grave. yes they can understand that he is sad and that he wishes they were alive but still(altough no matter how long the movie is it will never manage to give the viewer feelings in the magnitude that the reader felt in this part). this is just one of many moments in DH that a 5 year old cant fully understand, to my opinion. Also to TheLadyKT I havent thought about that place but I think the end of the chapter Bathilda's Secret is a good place. It will end with the memory from Voldemort, with the trio sepreated, and with Harry and Hermione jumping from a window.

Posted by TheLadyKT Feb 11th 2008

Tiassa, I think that is a great suggestion too. I agree with you on the kid part. Mine likes to watch the movies with me at home. I wouldn't consider taking her to the theater to see them though (she just turned 7). She is at the point of asking Why to a lot of things and in the theater is not the place for those conversations to take place.

Posted by toosoon13 Feb 11th 2008

I cannot believe you all don't want two films. That would be amazing, really the best thing ever. It would keep the excitement of the fandom alive that much longer and a book would finally be fully served in terms of content. You all don't seem to realize that to do the story justice the rest of the book after shell cottage alone will take 2 hours or more. so I say, please please two films! finally we will get to see the majority of the book done fruitfully onscreen!

Posted by grintloverr Feb 11th 2008

who doesnt want it split? it would be like the GREATEST thing ever and all the cast will be back and its the best book and maybe chris columbus would come back and ohh god it would just be amazing.

Posted by TheLadyKT Feb 11th 2008

I'd have to disagree with gryffindor_phoenix. Personally I think a couple of the other books should have been split up too. OOTP for one.

Posted by hpintwense06 Feb 11th 2008

I would love to see the movie split because, as mentioned, they can put more into it and make it truer to the book. The only problem with a split is that there will probably be a long period of time between the 2 movies and we'll have to wait longer.... kind of like when Pirates of the Caribbean 2 came out. I mean the 2nd & 3rd movies were just 2 pieces of what could've been a whole.

Posted by TheLadyKT Feb 11th 2008

Interesting example hpintwense06 .....however at least if they split these two they are still telling the same story. With Pirates and LOTR, the stories in those movies were separate but somewhat related. Personally I loved all the LOTR but really HATED pirates3. I thought it was horrible and they should have just stopped at 2.

Posted by UK_Wildcat Feb 11th 2008

I'm split. I agree with Playwright06, that people can watch three hour movies and not mind it - I actually know people who will sit down and watch The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King at a go. But the idea of having the movies stretch out a little longer is appealing to me. Also, they're more likely to do it well. TheLadyKT - are you crazy? LotR is not "somewhat related". It was written as a single story. In the books, the page numbers don't even start over again. Yeah, I'm obsessed with LotR as well as Harry Potter.

Posted by UK_Wildcat Feb 11th 2008

Is nobody here? I'm sad.

Posted by tiassa Feb 11th 2008

unn... In here. she ment its like spliting Return of the King

Posted by TheLadyKT Feb 11th 2008

ok ok LOTR was a bad example...... I'm guilty of not reading the books so I wouldn't know about that. Don't know why I haven't yet. Just finished the entire HP series again during my last school break. Maybe my next break. I have watched all 3 LOTRs at a stretch and did all 5 HPs (almost) in one day too. But in those cases, you have control over the remote to go to the restroom, eat as you please, and of course have a comfy couch to stretch out on. (Has anyone else noticed that theater seats have gotten smaller like the airlines, or is that just me). That would be my main complaint if they stretch it past the 3 hour point. Not to mention running out of popcorn half way through LOL

Posted by grednforge Feb 11th 2008

no no no no no no they better NOT split it!!!!!!! That would be so dumb! For goodness sake, just make it a 3 and a half hour long movie like they did with LotR 3. that movie was so good, it didn't even seem like it was actually that long. If they've got a great script (and they're working off the book, which is amazing) then they've got nothing to worry about. Just make it a LONG movie!! Do NOT split it in 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I go to the midnight premier, I want to go to see a spectacular movie. I don't wanna go, and then a month later be like, oh, I'm going to the midnight premier for the rest of the movie! And what are they gonna do with the second half? be like "previously on Harry Potter..." Longer movie= more time for development, too. split a movie in two and everyone will just be confused. I have much more to say on the issue, but this comment is already long enough, so peace out.

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Feb 11th 2008

AH NO! I dont agree we are going to have a gone witht eh wind style film for deathly hallows cause if not i WILL Find who elever is the director band on their doors and make them do it gone with the wind style!!=0

Posted by tiassa Feb 11th 2008

REMI!

Posted by ashleyyosaurus Feb 11th 2008

I still hate this idea with everything that is in me. Boo.

Posted by lupins_girl2006 Feb 11th 2008

ok people... those of you who say that DH should not be split are really crazy... and those of you who say it has to be 5 hours long are crazy too... it's obvious that the book is so long that it has to be more than five hours... to be honest i was a little upset with OotP because one: there was a lot of things missing... important things at that... and two: hello levicorpus isn't even mention as a spell spell until HBP... so that just proves that the last movie has to be split big time... if anyone agrees with me than good for you... if ya'll think i'm crazy than again thank you... but my houghts say that it should be split at least once... maybe twice

Posted by The_Snitch Feb 11th 2008

I hope the DO split it, theres too much to compress into one movie! I think they should have split all of the movies or at least made them longer - there was so much that was cut out it was pretty disappointing. I understand this has to be done in movies, but most of my friends that hadn't read the books before the movies ended up reading the books because the movies had obvious holes - like who the marauders were and how Lupin knew what the map was and what the stag patronus had to do with anything - then in Ootp the whole rebellion the twins', the swamp and everything were cut!! I was looking forward to seeing that... ...maybe Im just a die-hard fan but I wouldnt have minded sitting through an extra few hours per movie so I hope they split DH, I wanna see ALL of it!!!!!

Posted by secrets_and_magic Feb 11th 2008

Look, splitting the movie wouldn't be that bad. Ya, they could make it 5 hours, I wouldn't mind, but there are some people who are not really fans of Harry Potter, I am sad to say, and they wouldn't want to watch a 5 hour Harry potter movie. So they wouldn't get very much money. This way we get a the movie with out a bunch of cut scenes and other people will still buy the movie. To me it sounds like a good idea. Go Harry Potter!!!!

Posted by xoxoshannonxoxo Feb 11th 2008

I think this is a good idea b\c since a lot of stuff is going on in DH, we need to put EVERYTHING in the movie. If they put it all on one, they would either have to make the movie like, 5 hours long, or take stuff out. And we ALL don't want them to take parts out, right? Splitting into two parts will ensure every detail necessary is put in! =oP Don't worry, I'll turn out alright!! =o)

Posted by lupins_girl2006 Feb 11th 2008

hey snitch i totally agree with you

Posted by kreacher888 Feb 11th 2008

oh lord. please. producers. hear our crys. do not split into 2 movies. but if you must, it is imperative that they be shown together. not months apart. how about a 20 or 30 min intermission between two 2 1/2 3 hour movies. you would much lots of money and all of your adorning fans who be greatly appriciative.

Posted by phoenix22 Feb 11th 2008

This would be great!!!! I always want a longer harry potter movie packed with more features plus info and since this is the end of the Harry potter series it would be a bonus.

Posted by Mrs_Erika_Radcliffe Feb 11th 2008

Non non non non non non et cent fois non! (In french that's no no no no no no and 100 times no!) They will butcher the story! BUTCHER ITT! Here's my message to WB: BUTCHER IT, I BUTCHER YOU! I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE!

Posted by rooon Feb 11th 2008

Awww.... they will come out @ the same time?

Posted by GrownUpChick Feb 11th 2008

It depends on the script. If the script is good I don't have a problem with it being split into two films. Better to have two films than one film that is too short and doesn't cover what needs to be covered. It has been said that the HP films are made for everyone; not the fans. I think it's time to finally please those of us who have read all the books and go see the films because we love the books, not just for something to do on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon. Splitting into two films worked for "Kill Bill", and what a great cliffhanger at the end of Volume One! The same could be done for DH; some of you have even made good suggestions as to where the first film should end. I say split it in two, or at least make one good, LONG film.

Posted by KaileeA42 Feb 11th 2008

Oh my Godric! WHY did they not think of this for books 5, or at least have made 5 a respectable length for an 870 page book! It would have been kind of weird, but still. I am all for them splitting it into two parts, though I wonder where the split would be. Maybe when Ron leaves? Wow, THAT would be dramatic for the non-reader people. I think the movies would be better and have more stuff, but i honestly have kind of lost interest in the movies since they cut out my favourite sub-plot ( the whole Marauders and who they are thing) and have cut so much else out. They have cut important stuff out already, like the mirror. I think maybe if they do split it they can partially repair some of the stuff they have cut out. Like the MIRROR! How could they cut that out! And perhaps the characters will be better developed *cough*"Lupin and Tonks!"*cough* and they may even have Bill in there! Don't you guys think it would be great to see Bill. WARNER BROTHERS IF YOU READ THIS A LOT OF THE FANS ARE ALL FOR THE SPLIT!! -Nerdfighter Kailee P.S.
