Deathly Hallows movie split gains momentum
Deathly Hallows movie split gains momentum The Daily Telegraph has a new article today focusing on the continuing rumors of the final Potter film being split into two parts. When these rumors started one month ago, all we heard from WB was a big "no decision has been made." Today, we hear from the film's producers:

From David Barron: "We are still discussing it. The announcement will be made hopefully in the not-too-distant future, with regards to the way seven shapes up," Barron tells The Back Room.

The only negative of splitting the book into two films, says Barron, "is that people could possibly perceive it as being one last chance at cashing in. But the real positive, if we were to do that, would be that we wouldn't have quite the battle we always have of 'How do you compress all that book into just over two hours of screen time?'

From David Heyman: "A couple of people have expressed interest, people have gotten a few calls and a few emails, but it's still a year away," Heyman says.

"We won't start filming 'til February next year. So it hasn't really gone bananas yet. We've got thoughts, and I'm sure something will be announced in the not-too-distant future."

We'll continue to update you on this story as we hear more. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

I completely agree with Kailee!!! I must admit I would love a split because then they could go into more detail and since it is the last movie it shouldn't be too hard to convice the actors to work just a few more months to fully develop the film. (and maybe patch up the holes they have left in the past two movies) I mean, the last HP should be mind blowing! Thanks Mugglenet for keeping us up to date. :)

Posted by secretlyaleppy Feb 11th 2008

I honestly think they should follow through with this. I mean honestly, there is no way in hell they can compress the 7th book into two hours or so. There is so much stuff that needs to be explained. And plus, they've ruined some book with the movies already. At least give the last book the justice it deserves. I've was very dissappointed with the 5th movie. It was way to short, and cut out many important, or dramatic, scenes in the book. They are already ruining the 6th movie by cutting out the dursleys and Fleur. What? Do we want to let them tear apart the last book and cut out some amazing scenes that could be saved if they just make it two movies?

Posted by secretlyaleppy Feb 11th 2008

Oh, and to those who really think they should just make the movie 5 hours and we'll all sit through it, i'm sorry, no. Daniel Radcliffe is NOT that good...

Posted by CFplayer19 Feb 11th 2008

i'm sure what ever they chose 2 do will be good!.... no matter what the wb decides 2 do people will complain (probably including me)...if its one 2 hour movie everyone is going 2 say how much they left out of the book...but if they split it, everyone is going 2 complain about how there was 7 books there should be 7 movies, and that it doesn't make sense......its just human nature 2 complain

Posted by TheTrueHeirofRavenclaw Feb 11th 2008

Just for once...Will they PLEASE listen to the fans and give us a four hour movie?! We've been asking for it for years!! Dont destroy the best of the books by splitting it. Intermission worked in the early years -- why not bring back and old trend??

Posted by member_of_SPEW Feb 11th 2008

i'm not sure which i think would be best - a longer movie or two shorter ones. But the picture on this newspost made me laugh. XD

Posted by HPfanatic84 Feb 11th 2008

I really wish they wouldn't split the movie. Seriously, fans have been saying for years (myself included) that they would happily sit through a 3 or 4 hour movie! (titanic anyone? over 3 hours and it did EXTREMELY WELL in theaters). Anyhoo... IF they split it, I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope they air it back to back with an intermission. I understand that 5 year olds don't have the same bladder control that teens/adults have, so they can't sit through as long of a period of time w/o going to the bathroom. BUT still, i vote for NO SPLIT or and intermission. It'd just be stupid to have them released at different times, I think I'd boycott going to the theater and wait til it was on DVD (hopefully sold as a set) if they do that. That'd just be greedy on the part of WB, and they know they'd still make billions of dollars w/o a split.

Posted by erinavy Feb 11th 2008

I am gonna jusp on the splitting band wagon. I just dont think that DH can be put into one movie, not even a three hour one. if you think about it there is just too much info in the book and not much of it can be cut out. the only think that comes to mind is that they (the screenwriter and director) can kinda montage the going through the forest part with the trio but that is about it. the only thing I hope is that if they split the book into two movies that they dont wait the year 1/2 in between to release them. they should do something like the last 2 matrix movies have one in the winter and one the following early summer.

Posted by HPfanatic84 Feb 11th 2008

Does no one realize that if they make 2 movies, they will each be like... 2.5 hours. that's it. (so it seems from the "just over 2 hours" comment) 5 hours. I doubt they'd make two 3.5 hour movies. so why not do it all in one go, with an intermission.

Posted by cbrew Feb 11th 2008

i would love for them to make the movie into 2. do you realise that filming starts feb 2009 which means it will either be out in May-ish or July of 2010 I think the split should take place right as they enter hogsmeade or right before

Posted by dancefool1 Feb 11th 2008

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!! How did they just think of this??? I guess now we know this is real.

Posted by RKRK1313 Feb 11th 2008

Or, here's an idea: Why dont they make a 3 hour long Harry Potter movie for once? Oh wait, 3 hours is absolutely ridiculous guys. I don't think the world would be able to handle that. The producers definitely need to keep channeling the bizarre mentality that the American and British public are simply unable to enjoy a movie longer than 2 hours. That totally makes sense. In fact, I honestly think they should try breaking it up into 3 one hour long movies. It seems so much more logical that I would want to go see a story that was meant to be portrayed as one movie, split up into more than one part. Seriously, I think that makes complete sense. Don't you guys see? It will make the story so much more tolerable to see it portrayed in multiple parts. I mean as an avid Harry Potter fan, I am bound to get extremely sick of a Harry Potter movie that is over 2 hours long. Not to mention guys, Harry Potter doesn't have that many fans so I don't think the extremely small franchise that it is could support a 3 hour long movie. No one would go see it then! Of course. -------------- -------------- In all seriousness... I'm insulted that the producers don't have enough faith in the fans to trust that the world is not going to come to an end if we have a (gasp!) 3 hour long movie. It's time for them to treat the franchise and its millions of fans with a bit of dignity and respect and stop giving us this "it needs to be around 2 hours" bull****.

Posted by sirc Feb 11th 2008

I think the three part DH might be a bit much but it definately needs to be split in two. There's just to many things happening to put it into one. Right when I finished the book I said to myself that they will have to split it into 2 parts. Some people won't like it and some will, but everyone will hate the final movie to be missing many things that were in the book.

Posted by iheartmugglecast Feb 11th 2008

Nooooooo. Please. No. Do not spilt Deathly Hallows. Seven books, seven movies. Rinse and repeat.

Posted by naboo Feb 12th 2008

i would be happy with the spliting, fits more information in, if they dont, i hope the movie goes for a long time, i wouldnt mind, as long as its good.

Posted by HPfanatic71 Feb 12th 2008

Yea yea!! Just keep screwing up like you've done with all of the other movies. Why not continue the legacy!

Posted by Lord_Destnix Feb 12th 2008

"HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS" BEING SPIT UP INTO TWO PARTS!!!!!!!????????? I think it's probably the most stupidest idea ever! Since a lot of people love Harry Potter and love the films so much that they go out and see ALL the movies in the theaters or go out and buy all the DVDs. Me personally, I'm only 15 so I go see them in theaters and then buy them. You see, a hell of a lot of people go out and see the Harry Potter films in the theaters...except they go to the Midnight showings...so that they can "...see it before anybody else really gets a chance to!" For my family this is a tradition since I was little. We would read the book, then see the movie. Read the next book, the see the next movie. And by splitting "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" into a 2 part movie would definately hurt a lot of people money-wise, not to mention, this tradition. What are they gonna do next make a "SPECIAL FEATURES" disc that shows the "EPILOGUE" chapter of the book...plus something more!? Well thank you all for your time...this has been Lord_Destnix talking about why "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" should NOT be split up into 2 parts!

Posted by warlocksandmuggwumps Feb 12th 2008

sigh....... there are a lot of good things for that.... and a lot of bad things too.............

Posted by warlocksandmuggwumps Feb 12th 2008

does this remind anyone of horcruxes? do not split the soul!!! haha

Posted by TheLadyKT Feb 12th 2008

Unfortunatly for everyone who is suggesting a 3 or 4 or 5 hour movie, the theater owners and operators are NOT going to like it or go for it. Reason being, if you have 1 movie playing 4 hours and 2 movies each playing 2 hours, which is going to bring in more money??? The 2 movies becuase twice as many tickets are sold. I've worked for movie theaters. Its all about getting as many people in the seats as quickly as possible and the shoving them out to get the next set in. That is why they love the short animated flicks. They charge the same rate as the regular longer movies but can show it more times in a day to get even more revenue. The theater owners would prefer they make 2 movies since it would guarantee people coming twice to the theater vice once for a longer movie.

Posted by britishwannabe Feb 12th 2008

YAYYYYYYYYYY! SPLIT THE MOVIE WARNER BROTHERS! Then perhaps this can be the FIRST thing they actually did right. :) If only those idiots thought to do this for movie 5! ~~~nerdfighters! DFTBA!~~~~

Posted by m_warlock Feb 12th 2008

Look it's realy simple. Splitting DH into two films will give this great book the time, and justice it deserves. Less things will be cut, and it could be concieved as that little extra most people seem to want. The only negative i see is "yes" people will have to pay for an extra movie theater ticket. Oh, and we will have to wait a few extra months to finish watching the story. But C'mon! you know it'll totally be worth it.

Posted by gryffindor_phoenix Feb 12th 2008

Revenue is hardly going to be a problem whether it's 2 movies or 1. this is harry potter, every theater on earth knows that it will bring in millions of dollars in the first week alone. every screen showing it will be filled at every show. i still say that if they can make ootp and gof into 1 movie they can certainly make dh into a good 2 and a half to 3 hour movie. i don't think it should be 5 hours long or anything, but they can make it long like rotk and titanic and no one will mind.

Posted by Hollyanna Feb 12th 2008

I am of the opinion that any omission from the book texts to the movie scripts is a terrible miscarriage of literary justice. It's bad enough that they chopped OoTP to shreds in order to keep it of "viewable" length in Hollywood terms (Cho should NEVER have been made the snitch, that was AFWUL) . . .now there isn't going to be an appearance by Fleur Delacour in HBP . . .so what's next? Cut the Horcruxes down to 4 to save time in DH? I say keep DH one film but make it good and long so as not to eliminate or alter crucial plot details. Throw in an intermission, then - if it was good enough for "Ghandi," it's good enough for Harry Potter! And if the producers decide they can't do that, for whatever reason, then they absolutely must make it into part 1 and part 2. Most of Harry's fans are obsessed enough to be utterly devoted to WHATEVER Warner Bros. decides to bestow upon us, in fact, the longer, the better!!

Posted by Ryan_The_Pie Feb 12th 2008

I'm not fussed personally unless - a) we have to wait months for the second instalment b) we have to wait ages for the movie(s) if they release them together c) they do it as one movie and completely murder it I'd have personally liked OOTP to have been split (it is after all the longest book) but I don't think they missed too much out in what they did in the end. In the end WB's only a company, and companies exist to make money. They do as they wish. We can only hope for the best =]

Posted by butterbrewski10 Feb 12th 2008

I think it would be good to have DH split into two parts...whatever it takes to get every detail for the last movie

Posted by UK_Wildcat Feb 12th 2008

I'm gonna be really upset if they take the trouble to split the movie but don't include "I'm about to die". That was the best quote in the entire book! Or at least one of the best...

Posted by hplvr92 Feb 12th 2008

Well, it definitely looks like it's going to happen then. I'm actually okay with it. I think it's going to be interesting . I'm definitely going to HATE the wait between films but I think it'll be worth it. Hopefully they'll tie up the things that have been missed out in the other films. It'll be great either way, and we're all going to be on pins and needles no matter what they do so quite complaining! :P

Posted by adri_ana_ Feb 12th 2008

It would suck to have to wait for the second half, but it would allow so much more of the book to be inculded(it sucks when parts you love are out). Either way as many have said i cant wait!!!!!!!

Posted by queue007 Feb 12th 2008

Seriously, make the movie 4 hours or more. I mean, look at Titanic. And that is still the #1 top grossing film of all time. Nobody got sick of waiting for it to be over. If they do it right, the time will fly like it did with Titanic. Splitting it into two parts would stink, but if it meant that they could make each one 3 hours or more each time, that would rock. :) I have had Harry Potter marathons at my house where we've spent over 9 hours straight watching them with just a few pauses to snack or go to the bathroom. Now THAT'S a true Potter fan....ehhehehehe....

Posted by HPfanatic71 Feb 13th 2008

I like how everybody is talking about how great it would be and how it would do the book justice. Umm.. What about all the other movies and how they didn't do the books justice? They've left so much out of the books. How the hell are they going to explain so many of the plots that's been left out? Heck they're even leaving out Fleur in the next movie. I mean geez. It just doesn't make sense to me. To me it only seems like they're milking the franchise for as much money as possible. I'm one that just can't have high hopes for the last movie. If they're all of a sudden going to leave in a bunch of stuff I think there has to be a bunch of explaining to do for the viewers or they'll be confused as heck watching the movies. Oh and also. How far apart would those movies be? It all just doesn't make sense to me. I think if I want some good Harry Potter entertainment....I'll read the books over and over again. Only way to get the true story from beginning til the end!

Posted by xxloopy_louxx Feb 13th 2008

This is a great idea! That way they can get everything in! I was so disappointed with the last film because they missed out so many important bits of the storyline! If they do this I just hope that they don't leave to long of a gap between part one and part two!

Posted by gryffindor_phoenix Feb 13th 2008

it seems like most people who want the split want it because they want every last thing in he book to be in the movie. as someone on leaky's comments pointed out, every shred of information in dh can't be put into even 2 movies. it won't happen. besides that, they've already cut a lot of things out of 5 and 6 that would have been tied up in 7. since they weren't in previous films, there's no reason for them to be in 7. i really can't stand the idea of making one story into 2 stories when it is adapted to film. i don't see how it would come out feeling right and flowing as it should. all of the other movies have followed a clear pattern in ending with a big, climatic fight. it wouldn't feel right for the first part to stop at some random place in the mddle of the book. i don't understand at all why they suddenly want to split this book up when other books have been much longer and had just as much or more information. perhaps it's really just a last effort to cash in on the series.

Posted by CarpeNoctemTomorrow Feb 13th 2008

i'd love it if they split it in two movies. it would get everything that needs to be covered, because Deathly Hallows is definitely the most content filled book when it comes to plot importance. Also, awesome graphic for the story. :)

Posted by pwaugh Feb 13th 2008

the 7th book is the most important. they need to split the book. THEY HAVE TO SPLIT THE MOVIE!!!!

Posted by Hermownninny15 Feb 13th 2008

I agree with a lot of these guys. I think they should split the movie or make all one movie and make it 5hours. i wouldn't mind sitting through the whole thing. but for those who wouldn't want to sit through such a long movie i say split it. there's WAY TOO MUCH things in DH that DOES NOT need to be cut out. i want to be able to have a harry potter movie that actually has ALL the details instead of every good thing cut out, becaouse they have cut out way too many important things in every movie. mostly in 4,5,and 6.

Posted by carsonkairi2456 Feb 13th 2008

If the company splits up the movie into two, the first half will leave you hanging and feeling empty because they never finished it. My dad agrees. It will be similar to the first lord of the rings movie. It was giaining momentom and suddenly it just stops, to be continued. It was sort of agrivating. On the bright side, we will see more of the book actually in the movie. Unlike the other films where they squashed out a majority of the book and only lef the main plot behind. So it has its positive and negative reprecussions, but I personally still indecided. What do you guys think?

Posted by GinGin Feb 13th 2008

Please, split the movie. I am begging you. SPLIT IT. Or you may suffer my... displeasure. (Snape line, hehe)

Posted by colorfulcrocs Feb 13th 2008

They can deny it as fervently as they like, but the ONLY REASON they are considering making this split is because they know that two movies will generate two times the profit. The LOTR movies, perhaps the best fantasy book adaptions in the past decade, managed not to rip the books in half. Surely Harry Potter can do the same.

Posted by Lily_Windsor Feb 14th 2008

We should all realise by now that WB is not going to give us exactly what we want in one single film. They will slice and dice and rip and tear and we will all be complaining again about how it was all ruined. Therefore, if splitting the final film is the only way that they will do it justice and make the true fans happy then i'm all for it! PLEASE JUST GIVE US THE MOTHER OF ALL POTTER FILMS TO END THE SERIES!

Posted by phoenixmandc Feb 15th 2008

Ah, whatever as long as Alfonso doesn't film it we will get good quality, trust me.

Posted by SiruslyStupefyed Feb 15th 2008

Accio 2 part Deathly Hallows! (Luv the lightning split DH book cover artwork.)

Posted by whizgal Feb 15th 2008

I think a very long film will be boring for the young kids and parents. so they probably have no choice but to split it if they want to insert all the important parts . I am all for 2 films though. the more the better ;)

Posted by gryffindor_phoenix Feb 15th 2008

seeing as how this movie will most definately be pg-13, i dont think young kids sitting through this will be an issue. the book was very dark and gruesome at times (wormtail strangling himself, etc.) so i expect the movie to be as well. the audience will almost certainly be all or at least the vast majority older kids and adults who will have no problem sitting through a long movie.

Posted by love_padfoot Feb 16th 2008

o here is how i see and listen up people........cuz this took a lot of thought*passes out listening ears*. ok so here it is. well playwrite, i see what u mean, any true harry potter fan wud definatly sit through a 4-5 hour movie, longer if it needed to be. but honestly i dont know about u but i cant hold my pee for more than an hour. and i did think at first WOW it would be great if the movie was split into two! but then as i was reading comments then i realized, "WHY WOULD WE WANT TO WAIT PROBABLY WHAT WUD BE ANOTHER YEAR FOR THE SECOND HALF OF WHAT WILL BE THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER CREATED?" so the i read another comment by TRUEHEIROOFRAVENCLAW (love the name by the way, ravenclaw is my second favorite house), and he/she said something about intermentions and then im like GREAT!!!!!!!. that makes total sense cuz then u dont have to w8 forever and then you also dont have to hold your pee for hours and hours! an intermission wud allow u a potty break and u cud still see the whole darn thing!!!!!!!!!!AGH!!!!!!! !!this is the best idea ever, thxs trueheiroofravenclaw! you rock, so does everybody else who be helpin pitch me and others all these wonderful ideas! -allison broyles, your #1 fan

Posted by RaineDrop Feb 16th 2008

Well, book 7 sucked, so i look forward to seeing the hack-job they do to it in the movie script. honestly, they could only improve it because it can't GET any worse. my least favorite book might become my favorite movie, because, frankly, a HP movie hasn't been made yet i was terribly happy with, and i never hated a book as much as i do DH...it would be ironically perfect.................. .................... Spl it it up, make it long, cut it down to just be over an hour, so long as they don't try and BS that "epilogue" into the film i think i will survive to then buy the DVD and stick it with the rest of my HP crap i don't really touch anymore since Jo ruined the whole series for me with that last travisty (aka: book). Two films would mean two last opportunities to wear my awesome Slytherin robes though, so that would be fun...................... ......................... omg, new Star Wars film August of 2009! more excuses to get dressed up and see movies at midnight! woot!

Posted by Theviel07 Feb 17th 2008

i say it should totally be split into two parts for three reasons 1: it will remain true to the book unlike the 5th potter film 2: the information need to understand precedent meanings will come across to ignorent audiences 3: There will be no need to cut out scenes and characters from the book. And i digress, the movie will be just like watching a moving picture of the book itself.
