Study finds 'Potter' can be addicting
Study finds 'Potter' can be addicting As if anyone needed to tell us this, MTV published an article earlier today about research concluding that the Harry Potter series can in fact be addicting. The story notes:

In a just-finished study that's being submitted to the Journal of General Psychology, psych professor Dr. Jeffrey Rudski and two of his undergrad students at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, report that they found characteristics of addiction in at least 10 percent of the 4,000 Potter fans they polled online.

While the doctor discusses that the end of the series did have serious withdrawal symptons for some, likening it to going off a drug "cold turkey," he also said he chose to do the study on the end of the boy wizard's saga over the conclusion of the hit series The Sopranos because of his 15-year old daughter and the things she's taken from it:

"She's picked up guitar because she wants to be in a wizard-rock band," he said. "She's studying Latin because she wants to better understand J.K. Rowling's choices of names for her characters. She started reading Stephen King and John Irving because they spoke with Rowling at Radio City two summers ago." If that's being an addict, he's down with it.

Posted by Rice12345 Feb 22nd 2008

addicted? US? =P

Posted by EmilyBlack Feb 22nd 2008

I agree with them. Harry Potter is incredibly addicting in a wonderful way! =) 4th?

Posted by Jimmy_D Feb 22nd 2008

Lol. Duh?!?! I think we all knew that.

Posted by mysterious_mayhem_maker Feb 22nd 2008

This is amazing. I'm saving this article for forever and ever.

Posted by CFplayer19 Feb 22nd 2008

lol....its soo true

Posted by phoenixsong09 Feb 22nd 2008

Oh my... now that I know that my EXTREME long-term Potter-addiction has been actually considered a true "addiction" by psychologists, if I became addicted to drugs or anything illegal for that matter, that would be HORRIBLE. Potter is truly my anti- drug now. lol

Posted by Mattuk Feb 22nd 2008

AMAZING !!!! We live in a world with war, disease, famime. Cancer killing people. The chance to travel to a new planet in Mars. Rapists and murders being given light sentences by a pathetic criminal justice system that seems to favour them over the victums. And this man has spent his time seeing if a book series is addictive. Well no shhh sherlock and who the hell cares? Its not like this is benifical to the good of mankind or anything. Sorry, went off on one there.

Posted by LoonyLuna127 Feb 22nd 2008

That's so awesome! What makes me mad is that people think it's full of bad witchcraft and stuff, but it really has good meanings and inspires kids (and adults) to do great things.

Posted by Rouge Feb 22nd 2008

Oh boy... Now we'll have that lady and her friends suing us for being adicted...

Posted by LoonyLuna127 Feb 22nd 2008

Edit to my previous comment: Ok, so maybe there are some people to take their addiction too far, but I was referring to how there ARE benefits.

Posted by malteselover Feb 22nd 2008

Didn't need a study to figure that one out. I've become so addicted in the last year or so that my parents are worried. But who cares. It's safer and healthier than drugs. I mean, think of all the awful things we potter fans could end up doing if we didn't have the books and mugglenet to keep us busy. :-)

Posted by Dani456 Feb 22nd 2008

LOL. That is soo funny!!! I can soo see a bunch of grad students studing their findings on "Potter addiction"!!!! ROTFLOL!!!! DUHH!!!

Posted by LoonyLoopyLuna Feb 22nd 2008

I do love my father sometimes. It is true, though. I would NEVER play guitar if is wasn't for Potter. I've been learning all of these Wizard Rock songs and all and having a really good time with it. And a tip to all Latin learning people: Potter helps so much on tests. The one question on the last one was "What does Lumos mean?" I was like! I know! I know! The best thing about my father doing this study is that I've been getting sneak peeks at all of the papers and all. It is over 40 pages and looks amazing! Btw, if you are going to Terminus, he will be presenting there. Yay for HP love!

Posted by CheerGeek Feb 22nd 2008

Well although we already knew this, at least someone has proved it! LOL! ;)

Posted by Lucas Feb 22nd 2008

No its not addicting... I can quit whenever I want to

Posted by alastormoody Feb 22nd 2008

I agree with CheerGeek- but, that's me.

Posted by felixfelicis888 Feb 22nd 2008

HARRY POTTER: THE HEALTHIEST OF ADDICTIONS. Heck yeah i'm addicted!!! And I noticed these things too. I also have started playing bass guitar and I hope to start a band. Other things too, like that latin. It's really interesting to learn latin because you constantly see HP stuff!!!

Posted by ColleenPotter Feb 22nd 2008

Posted by maki Feb 22nd 2008

OH REALLY? Well, not very shocking heheh... interesting though, but I still prefer to be addicted to HP than to drugs, pornography, or who knows what.... yay for HP!

Posted by katie_ella_30 Feb 22nd 2008

lol. i love micah's little sarcastic opening. you rock :DD

Posted by Wizard4243 Feb 22nd 2008

hell yes the story of Harry Potter is addicting. I mean this was the first ever book I have read and i liked it so much it is the only book that i read. But now that I am older i do read other books like Eragon and lord of the rings and chronicals of Narnia. Matter of fact fantasy books are all i enjoy reading.

Posted by Esodes08 Feb 22nd 2008

I'm an addict. What can I say? I'm not hurting anyone, am I? I am very much fine remaining in this state - it has cool people.

Posted by goldie09 Feb 22nd 2008

I didn't need a study to tell me some of us are addicts...myself included. what a waste of time. don't they have better things to do!?

Posted by emcrocks Feb 22nd 2008

Yeah well I am a seventh grader and I must say that this makes sense! People at my school always come to me when they have Harry Potter questions. I have sorta been made fun of a few times too. But I REALLY like Harry Potter stuff and I guess that yes you could say I am addicted! But it is not really a bad thing is it?

Posted by grintloverr Feb 22nd 2008

this website is proof that harry potter is addicting and so are all of we hahah

Posted by chommy Feb 22nd 2008

"As if anyone needed to tell us this ..." (Quote from Micah) After all the Spiderwick stuff yesterday, someone needs to tell me ... =P

Posted by hedwighummer Feb 22nd 2008

Nooo, you don't say?? Wow. We've all known it for a long time now, but finally, it's confirmed. It's official. It's about as shocking as the fact that rain is wet, but now we know for sure. HPAnon must now be started. Let the confessions begin.

Posted by Dementress Feb 22nd 2008

Potter is addicting?? What a scientific breakthrough! So that explains my magic-obsessed behavior! (rolls eyes)

Posted by xoxoshannonxoxo Feb 22nd 2008

I LOVE Harry Potter, but I'm not addicted like SOME people.....hearing about people THAT addicted make me think, "What are you DOING with your life, man??"

Posted by Arry Feb 22nd 2008

We are all addicted aren't we! Go to http://www.freewebs.com/h pfanmovie/ if you want to show you are

Posted by Dementress Feb 22nd 2008

Continued: I suppose it all depends on how you take the addiction; in a good healthy way or "what-the-hell-are-you-do ing-with-your-life!?" way.

Posted by sillyme Feb 22nd 2008

awwwwww~ that is so right! hp is so addicting! i mean i feel like i have experienced the going off it cold turkey--i havent read the books in a while and i havent listned to mc in a while. i think its just part of the readjustment period though. long live hp and its addictions!

Posted by xoxoshannonxoxo Feb 22nd 2008

I TOTALLY agree, Dementress.

Posted by teddysgirl011 Feb 22nd 2008

well no DUH!!! we already knew this...............lol!!

Posted by thediarywithin Feb 22nd 2008

My name is Kendra and I am addicted to Harry Potter. Litterally my friends always tell me before dh came out that I am going to crash. I really did I litterally just pulled myself away from everyone. But I read a lot of Harry Potter fanfiction and write a lot of Harry Potter fanfiction and make tons of Harry Potter videos. that helps...but when I get really depressed I just read the books. Also Harry Potter helped me realized that I love to write myself and love to read.

Posted by Hogwartsgirl52 Feb 22nd 2008

I totally agree. Harry Potter is addicting but at the same time it's my anti-drug! :) :P

Posted by Sashullichka Feb 22nd 2008

We already knew it existed...but now I can justify my potter maddness to my friends who just don't understand my obsession!

Posted by coolmama Feb 22nd 2008

While we might be addicted to HP, we don't need to worry about crashing. Just pull out the books and read them again and again and again and.....As addictions go, it is probably the most benign we can have. We focus on the triumph of good over evil, the value of family and friendship and the consequences delving into a life of evil. There are worse things.

Posted by honeydukes0209 Feb 22nd 2008

Er...most...well, actually, make that aLL of us kinda knew that already..but at least it's been confirmed now, right? ;) HP is totally my drug...haha...now I have a backup source when my friends say I'm tOO obsessed with HP...hehehe...

Posted by LaurenMalfoy Feb 22nd 2008

well, duh, of course we're addicted! and, yeah, im waaay too addicted- i have 4 wands that i made myself, im the proud admin of a (dead) roleplay site (http://risamoon. suddenlaunch3.com please join!), i got to meet JKR at the LA stop and snuck my camera in to take pix, i read fanfiction when i should be doing hw, and im known at my school as the HP freak. But you see, my addiction is good. i've made a lot of friends because of HP and it's always the first thing i say when i'm introducing myself. And, yeah, people think im a freak for liking the books and for dressing up for the LA stop on the book tour, but i dont care. I just take out my wand (which i totally dont carry with me to school... *shifty eyes*) and say "Silencio" and walk away. :D oh, yeah... props to the dude who did the study, and to malteselover, Bellatrix_25225, and hedwighummer for their comments. i totally agree with what you guys said. :) and to whoever posted first... dude, wtf? anyway, this is like my longest comment ever and i got fanfiction to read, so... later!
