JKR continues her crusade against caged children
JKR continues her crusade against caged children According to a report today by The Sun, Gordon Brown has been pressing for change in Romania where children have, in some instances, been kept in cages. He will meet with Calin Popescu-Tariceanu while Jo Rowling will meet with Gordon Brown's wife, Sarah, in an attempt to better the situation.

A Downing Street insider said: "This is an issue which Sarah and JK are passionate about. They’ve been grateful for the willingness of the Romanian government to engage in serious discussion about it."

Jo has previously donated generously to this cause.

Posted by cerberadragon Feb 27th 2008

4th! Wow. This is a really good cause for Jo to support. It's great how Harry Potter has given her enough influence to make a difference and that the fandom regonizes and suports this. Hooray for Jo!

Thats good that shes taking a stance on something she believes in. I think we all need to do that a little more. I cant believe that people would treat others that was though! Its unbelievable!

Posted by PygmyPuff9494 Feb 27th 2008

my first comment! yay!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by malteselover Feb 27th 2008

Go Jo! It's wonderful that she is fighting for a cause she believes in. Have you seen the site about the caged children (the links on Jo's site)? It's absolutely awful. Really, unbelievable that children are treated that way. Seeing Jo bring good to the world in such a way makes me proud to be an HP fan.

Posted by chommy Feb 27th 2008

Wow ... kids in cages ... that's horrible! This is one of the many reasons I love Jo! She's always helping out! 8)

Posted by Guru_Frederick_Weasley Feb 27th 2008

whoa...that's pretty inhumane. can't imagine what it'd be like to live a small cage, these kids are treated like animals. at least someone is trying to help them out... and its good that its Jo cuz she's awsum *as a sidenote: since Jo knows Gordon Brown so well, how cool would it be if she managed to plead him to play the muggle PM in HBP!! they beter keep that part it's pretty sweet

I just want to say that I use an RSS feed reader to keep up with this blog, and today was the first day that I could actually read it without all that HTML code in there. Good job to the person who finally figured it out and made it look clean and nice!! Thanks Mugglenet.

Posted by love_padfoot Feb 27th 2008

wow, i cant believe this kinda thing still happens in the country! but luckily jk is on the move and u know that when she sets her mind to it, u can guarantee it will happen! go jo! ........................b ut guess wat i did today u guys........i did a speech about the harry potters series! unfortunatly i ran out of time and wasnt able to finish the oodles more i had to share. by the time i was done talking about wat the many messages sent across were, my time was up and i couldnt talk about all the other wonderful things i had planned which sucked a lot!

Posted by jinnyw Feb 27th 2008

That is so sad I can't believe anyone would cage children! I 'm proud of Jo

Posted by Smokes_With_Wolves Feb 27th 2008

Shame on Jo!!! She should be helping the caged children, not crusading against them! Cut them a break Jo, they are already caged. Way to kick people when they're down. ... Now, on the other hand, if Jo decided to crusade against the cagers themselves...

Posted by trueligth Feb 27th 2008

It is good when celebraties get involve in community services, because the media pays more attention to the problem and try to find a solution. I give her an applusse to her and to any person who would get involve in make the live of this children better.

Posted by l00nyl0veg00d Feb 28th 2008

I think that it is awesome that Jo cares about something like this. She has been interested in it for awhile, she has links on her site for it.

Posted by buddika Feb 28th 2008

wow. children in cages? never heard of that before. I've heard of animals in cages which is also horrible. Jo saves the day again! If she has a lot of money then it's a good thing that she's doing something great with her money. I hope those kids get a bed to sleep in one day instead of a cage!

Posted by spiffy_light Feb 28th 2008

Good on you Jo! Making the world a better place.

Posted by NicoleM Feb 28th 2008

I have been wondering for a while if there have been any improvement on this issue in Romania. I'm glad Jo is still fighting to help these children. It's terrible! This woman must be involved in more charities than any celebrity in this world! And, I honestly do not think I'm exaggerating.

Posted by Ionut Feb 28th 2008

OH COME ON!!!!!!!!!! I AM FROM ROMANIA AND HAVE NEVER HEARD OF CHILDREN BEING KEPT IN CAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE HOW OUR COUNTRY IS BEING MADE TO LOOK THIS BAD BY FALSE REPORTS!

Posted by Ionut Feb 28th 2008

Yes, there are very poor families that can't raise their children even in decent conditions, and there are children that end up living on the streets which is VERY SAD ... this is the reason JK donated all that money ... so we can improve the conditions in orphanages and build more of them THERE ARE NO CHILDREN BEING KEPT IN CAGES... ...for crying out loud!

Posted by Mausefix Feb 28th 2008

@Iounut, under the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceauşescu there were indeed children held in cages. But this is history! Romania had worked very, very hard to become a EU member state. The conditions of the EU membership are very strictly. And Romania fulfilled them. And now Mrs. Rowling goes to Romania to show the world a wrong image of the country. I respect in some cases her passion for children and welfare. But I cannot stand her arrogant and patronizing attitude which is (from my point of view) a stinky relict of British imperialism. It

Posted by Ionut Feb 28th 2008

@Mausefix I don't know if this is JK's fault ... she just wants to help NEEDY children ... this is the fault of big tabloids, such as the sun in this example, because they're trying to make things look even more dramatically than they really are.

Posted by Mausefix Feb 28th 2008

@Iounut, Mrs. Rowling is aware of "The Sun"

Posted by KaitlinM Feb 28th 2008

I love Jo! Its wonderful when people with recources and influence take the oppurtunity to help people less fortunate than them. She really lives up to all the values she expresses in her books.

Posted by maricris Feb 28th 2008

What Jo is doing is a really good thing but let's not pretend that she is the only one that cares and does something about this. It's not like everyone in Romania keeps their children in cages. Only a few very stupid people do that not 22 millions. If you think about it in every country you go there are people treating their children awful and that's horrible. I hope she intends to really do something for those children, not only go and talk about it, because talking is not going to do any good. We can all talk and people are talking about it and are doing something about it and every time a situation like this is found the media and the social services go there and help that child and punish his/her parents. If she really wants to make a difference she should find a way to use her power and money to help find those children cause that's the problem: those children are really hard to find. I really hope she plans to do more than talking because by talking she's not going to make a big difference.
