Queen's party coverage; JKR 'sad' to see HP end
Queen's party coverage; JKR 'sad' to see HP end The Queen's 80th birthday celebration at Buckingham Palace took place today and a report by CBBC Newsround states that JK Rowling was one of the first stars to arrive. Additionally, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Matthew Lewis were in attendance to see the show.

A video of the pre-recorded sketch, featuring Dan, Rupert, Emma and Matt, played during the "Queen's Handbag" performance can be seen here (screencaps here), thanks to reader Nick.

Some images from the event can be seen in our gallery. They include shots of the aforementioned HP cast members as well as JK Rowling reading Book 6 to fans.

At the event, Jo said of Book 7: "I am feeling sad as it is the last one. But so far, so good." Regarding the book's progress, she said: "I'm doing well I think. You can never really tell till you get near the end. I am not quite there yet."

Apparently, JK was "mobbed" by kids but said, unperturbed: "This is the bit I like. I like meeting them."

Update: Jo told The Times at the event that she "always believed children would come back to enjoying books - and that's not just down to me." Harry Potter would have been "a bit fazed" by the event, she said. "But he's quite cool, and I think he would have been impressed."

Posted by NoDayBut2Day Jun 25th 2006

Yerg. It very much irks me to be on a different time schedule...

Posted by Seventhchild Jun 25th 2006

They didn't show her reading - ah well. The rest was a bit cheesy, and very childish, but it was made for kids after all so I can't complain. :D I didn't think the trio's acting could get any worse - more fool me. >

Posted by doctorwhoobsessed Jun 25th 2006

There was hardly any HP stuff- no Jo. And the Potter stars- minus Dan- were sitting right in front of the Queen

Posted by Hollie Jun 25th 2006

Oh my goodness ... Erm? What can I say ... the play was ... alright, I suppose ... The Harry Potter play was ... Well, the acting was terrible in some places. For anyone who wants to know what happened: Harry Hill (comedian) sent a letter with a white owl (not Hedwig) asking for help with finding the Queen's handbag .. Cue extremely bad Hogwart's building (so fake looking) and we find ourselves in the Gryffindor Common Room where Harry, Ron and Hermione come down the stairs and Hermione says something like "...eggs are vegetarian?" Then they see the owl, get the letter .. Cue Ron and Harry saying "Accio Her Majesty's handbag" Loads of handbags fall down ... Hermione takes charge and writes a letter back ... And then it ends. The letter goes back to the party itself and all the children have to say "Accio Her Majesty's handbag" Didn't see JK Rowling ... Saw Rupert and Emma ... Emma looked bored.

Posted by hunnybunny63 Jun 25th 2006

Emma is at the party! they should of had the actors on stage! i loved it tho!

Posted by Frilly_Knickers Jun 25th 2006

Did anyone actually spot JK in the crowd? I saw Ron, Neville and Hermione sitting right in front of the Queen (and how bored did she look? Picking her nails and everything!) Yup, very cheesy but it is only aimed at kids about 8 and the HP bit was about 30 seconds long, I'd much rather have watched them than Patsy Kensit with the worst Eastern European accent ever! Ho hum, still there are worse ways to kill a Sunday evening Frilly Knickers (or should that be the Queens Frilly Knickers?) P.S 1-0 to England, woo-hoo, Becks you're a king.

Posted by Books_4_eva Jun 25th 2006

Hay is wasn't bad through it looks like they never broadcast the reading. Oh the bit in hogwarts was funny. Can't remember exactly how it went but. Ron: Looks like JK's got some new ideas. Harry: personally I don't see voldermort with a handbag. I just have this picture of voldermort with the queens hand bag hooked round his arm lol :D

Posted by Kamion Jun 25th 2006

not as bad as I feared, but the whole show was nice.... for children of course. But what still worries me is the make-up used on the HP characters. The filming for OotP is in progress and this are gonna be the looks..... bleeeuh!!! btw. did Her Majesty enjoy the show? She looked rather grumpy to me.

Posted by Znuese Jun 25th 2006

"I can't really imagine Voldemort with a handbag." Haha~ Best line of the whole thing.

Posted by Nargles Jun 25th 2006

What was shown was brilliant, Jo or no Jo. Would have been good if she could have read though. Anyway, would have liked to have seen the Harry Potter actors on stage considering they were there anyway (sitting right infront of the queen!). Anyway, can't wait for Jo's interview on Richard and Judy!! 1 more day to go, 25 minutes of her talking, will be excellent!

Posted by bubblybecca123 Jun 25th 2006

hehe it was funny...dans acting was pretty lame...looked like he couldnt be bothered...lucky tho that the actors got to sit infront of the queen who looked like she was going to fall asleep.

Posted by AvecMon Jun 25th 2006

I just watched it. It was really childish like, but hey, this was was made for kids after all. Anywho, the HP scene felt a bit cheesy. The acting was completely appauling. When they carried out the "ACCIO" charm, they used two hands to hold their wand. Also, make-up was rubbish. You could've seen the terrible spread of acne on the stars. Also, the footage at the start and beginning of the scene (going around Hogwarts) felt like it had been extracted from Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets. It felt grainy and of bad quality. Clearly the HP producers and stars weren't paid at all, as it refelcted to their performance. Lets hope OOTP won't actually be like this.

Posted by Hollie Jun 25th 2006

But did you see Dan's hair? Argh! Bad, bad, bad ... And Emma's ... Hello? When has Hermione had perfectly formed and tame curls? When has she had curls full stop? Argh! I hate it! Yeah, the Queen looked so bored ...

Posted by The_Mousey_One Jun 25th 2006

I didn't think it was cheesy, well maybe a bit and I couldn't see any acne, then again I wasn't paying attention to the make-up. The grainy bit I agree on though, I thought they used a photo at one point and just sort of moved the camera up since it all looked kinda...still.

Posted by Books_4_eva Jun 25th 2006

ye the queen did look a bit bored didn't she lol. As for the acting, hay they where in front of a big crowd and pantomime is usually a bit corny. Can't wait for the interview with Richard and Jude tomorrow, 25 hole mins :D

Posted by Seventhchild Jun 25th 2006

Yeah, the Queen's express was the funniest thing - she looked like someone had forced her to go there. The least she could do is pretend to have a good time - she did sanction the whole thing after all. Besides, she knows the camera will always glimpse at her now and then, she should have been a bit more attentive.

Posted by Henrietta_thePseudonym Jun 25th 2006

The HP bit was definitely the best bit (not at all biased, of course...it wasn't like it was the only reason I was watching it or anything like that :) ), the rest was fairly cringey, but then again I'm not six, so that's to be expected. The Queen didn't look too entertained...probably thinking why all these plebs were in her back garden. We didn't get to see Jo do her reading! *Fume*

Posted by Jess_Malfoy Jun 25th 2006

HORAAY!! Just seen it!! Dan's hair looked ok in the mini film!! and Ruperts!! however Hermione's wasnt as 'Hermione-ish' as in the films. It was really good though!! I was soo exited when it came on AND their spell was the one that got the Queens handbag back!! XD IF YOU LOVE TALKING ABOUT HP THEN COME TO www.hermynpansy91.proboards77.com :D:D:D

Posted by AvecMon Jun 25th 2006

By the way, the first thing that was said in the Hp part was not "eggs are vegetarian", but as to what I could hear "Hagrid is a Vegetarian?"

Posted by Laura_Ven Jun 25th 2006

I need see it!!!...but I live in Venezuela and I don't have any BBC's channels. I really want to see it!. Somebody know an alternative??? Sorry If my english wasn't perfect

Posted by xXSophieXx Jun 25th 2006

That was funny, the acting could of been better lol, but some of the lines were gd. Emma was 2 dramatic for me, n the hair is forming more into Emma's and she wore these ear rings, so out of character, but its only a little fun thing i guess. . Also dont like Dans n Matts hair on it. I loved how the Queen looked bored out of her skull lol n her wearing her glasses that the whole plot was over trying 2 find them lol. I couldnt believe Emma, Rupert n Matt were sitting infront of the queen! All looked like they were having a blast from what i could see. U just saw their heads but it looked like Matt and Rupert were wearing a suit. N Emmas hair looked more blond. I dont think JKR was there by the way. I cant wait 4 the Richard and Judy show 2morro!!! :)

Posted by Hollie Jun 25th 2006

Avecmon ... God! Kill me now! *hides face in hides* Eggs are vegetarian? Duh .. I'm thick .. Have sent some pictures in to Mugglenet .. none of the skit itself but of Emma, Rupert and JK Rowling

Posted by performingmonkey Jun 25th 2006

This was interesting to watch. Emma only seems to be able to act on one level...the way she read out of the book was exactly the same as in all the movies, in that pseudo-dramatic way! Dan sounds and looks older as Harry, which is good. Rupert hardly had a line (nice to see things don't change much even in a short clip for the Queen!) and Matthew being in it was just pointless. Oh, and before anyone else says it - this IS canon, right?

Posted by englandrox Jun 25th 2006

"She looked rather grumpy to me." - duh, any english person would know the queen always looks grumpy "Clearly the HP producers and stars weren't paid at all, as it refelcted to their performance" - no one was paid - it WAS for the queen, after all! I thought it was great!!!

Posted by Grey Jun 25th 2006

There she is:) theres Jo, looking lovely in that little blue dress with the best book in the world in her lap:)

Posted by indiansummersky Jun 25th 2006

lol @ emma's expression.

Posted by Samantha_Weasley Jun 25th 2006

they look thrilled to be there lol

Posted by missinconspicuous Jun 25th 2006

I can't believe we didn't get to hear JK's reading, that was like the only reason I watched the stupid programme! And Rupert, of course, but he looked dreadful. They all did, actually. And WHY was Neville in there? No point, at all. And did Ron or did Ron not say 'Voldemort'? I swear he did - he douesn't! He's supposed to be scared stiff of him! And shouldn't Harry and Ron and everyone be about 26 at this point anyway ? I don't blame the Queen for looking so bored! PS Yay England!!! 1:0!!!

Posted by GinnyPotter Jun 25th 2006

woah JKR looks so pretty in that picture! is that the queen sitting behind EW and RG??

Posted by xXSophieXx Jun 25th 2006

I wonder why they cut JKR... why would they do such i thing, i was lookn 4ward to see that. Maybe it'll be on the internet not long from now, hopefully :)

Posted by HpRoxGeniousStory Jun 25th 2006

Hi i saw that!! was good the harry potter short thing was cool, very well done!!!! 8~} I Love Harry Potter {~8

Posted by Frilly_Knickers Jun 25th 2006

What do you mean the Queen always looks grumpy? That's treason that is, off to the tower with you. I guess they filmed the HP stuff on the hop cos there hair was very much their off screen hair wasn't it? I couldn't believe it when I saw Rupert sitting right in front of her maj, and how excited did Tracy Beaker sound when she was giving the Queen her handbag? Sophie- I don't think the Queen was actually wearing her glasses during the performance, when she went on stage to give her speech she got them out of her handbag and gave them a little wave (this obviously counts for humour in Buck. Pal.)

Posted by dizzysaff Jun 25th 2006

i saw it on the tv it was brilliant. i loved it.

Posted by dreamy_leo Jun 25th 2006

That was nice. Not perfect from a Harry Potter fans perspective but it was nice to see them again in their Hogwarts uniforms. Ron had a good seat, didn't he? He was sitting right in front of the queen. It was very disappointing that we couldn't see Jk though. That would have been great. She looks lovely in the picture.

Posted by Frilly_Knickers Jun 25th 2006

Ginny Potter, what do you mean is that the Queen? Who else is going to friggin' be?
