Queen's party coverage; JKR 'sad' to see HP end
Queen's party coverage; JKR 'sad' to see HP end The Queen's 80th birthday celebration at Buckingham Palace took place today and a report by CBBC Newsround states that JK Rowling was one of the first stars to arrive. Additionally, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Matthew Lewis were in attendance to see the show.

A video of the pre-recorded sketch, featuring Dan, Rupert, Emma and Matt, played during the "Queen's Handbag" performance can be seen here (screencaps here), thanks to reader Nick.

Some images from the event can be seen in our gallery. They include shots of the aforementioned HP cast members as well as JK Rowling reading Book 6 to fans.

At the event, Jo said of Book 7: "I am feeling sad as it is the last one. But so far, so good." Regarding the book's progress, she said: "I'm doing well I think. You can never really tell till you get near the end. I am not quite there yet."

Apparently, JK was "mobbed" by kids but said, unperturbed: "This is the bit I like. I like meeting them."

Update: Jo told The Times at the event that she "always believed children would come back to enjoying books - and that's not just down to me." Harry Potter would have been "a bit fazed" by the event, she said. "But he's quite cool, and I think he would have been impressed."

Okay. I've already made a comment twice, but i'll add a bit more. It would've been a wee bit nice if they had put more effort into the acting. Also, the footage of the castle could've been better, and there could've been some hints within the sketch regarding OOTP.

aww i wish i had gotten to see it! did it come on bbc? i live in usa so i dont have bbc...but by the comments it sounds like the play wasnt that good and had a pretty lame plot...but i dont get it, theyre looking for her handbag?????? thats so cheesy! thats so cool how emma and rupert were like right in front of the queen...but they didnt look excited at all! i would be like omg im right in front of the queen...oh..my...gosh...lol anyway i thought they WERENT going to be there...or was that just dan? yea i think it was just dan...but i still didnt know they were going to be there. i wish i was at her party...

Posted by Jadore_lui Jun 25th 2006

I have just watched it again, I am so annoyed that they did not broadcast JkRowling reading. I also think it was mean that Dan was not in attendance. However don't you just love the fact that Rupert and Emma were sitting right infront of a grumpy looking Queen? The sketch wasn't bad either apart from they all looked too made up, and the short hair was so different. Bring on Film 5.

Posted by Helene Jun 25th 2006

Wow, talk about up close and personal; Emma and Rupert directly in front of the Queen--how thrilling!! And Jo looks beautiful, as always!

Posted by ValGal292 Jun 25th 2006

WHERE IS THE CAPTION CONTEST ERIC?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Posted by nishita Jun 25th 2006

it's k, but the queen looked like she was abt to fall asleep.....is it just me or Emma is growing out of hermione........i mean when does she have perfectly tamed hair?? hope they work on all three of them before they shot OoTP

Posted by xXSophieXx Jun 25th 2006

Frilly_Knickers - 'Sophie- I don't think the Queen was actually wearing her glasses during the performance, when she went on stage to give her speech she got them out of her handbag and gave them a little wave'. i didnt mean then, she was wearing her glasses while watchn the show, i seen them when the cam went onto her... have alook on the photo's :)

Posted by Nameless Jun 25th 2006

Well, Emma and Rupert look like they're having loads of fun.

Posted by dumbledores_bredrin Jun 25th 2006

i watched it and it was good but it was really for younger children. they didnt broadcast the JKR bit :( Rupert Grint was sitting right in front of the Queen!

Posted by englandrox Jun 25th 2006

I know you're all moaning about the lame plot... but there's a reason for that. It was a CHILDREN'S garden party, children were invited to go so it was aimed mainly at them... NOT teenage Harry potter fans

Posted by iamthebest Jun 25th 2006

Emma looks like she is ten years old again with that fringe. Rupert looks the same as always. JK looks great though.

Posted by Aisling Jun 25th 2006

Haha it was really funny I am such a child. Shame they didn't show the reading. Haha I saw Rupert and Emma and I could have sworn they were sitting in front of the Queen!!!

Posted by Hosiemoncakefaerycrazywoman Jun 25th 2006

Aw... don't forget the Queen will have had to sit through hours of rehersals and mic tests etc, without being able to get away from it for five minutes, because it's all taking part in her back garden/roof/house! Also, you must admit she had that kind of twinkle in her eye and mischievous smile when she pulled her glasses out of her handbag, which you simply can't fake! I thought it was so sweet that they put that together for her birthday, some present! I loved the bit with Peeves pelting all and sundry with red, white and blue eggs at breakfast! Also, agree about Voldemort with a handbag jauntily perched on one wrist, preferably clutching a chihuahua under his other arm - charming darling! Loved the panto also! I don't understand why so many people believe it was too childish; the Queen is now 80 and it was in her honour, although admittedly she didn't seem in the mood for it... still, got too stay young at heart (or I do anyway). Altogether now: Super-cala-frager-listic-extpe-ali-dO-cious... (sorry about spelling) Yay! *still floating on a red, white and blue egg-stained cloud* OK, extra-long waffling over now! Ooopseydaisy! Sorry!!

"I know you're all moaning about the lame plot... but there's a reason for that. It was a CHILDREN'S garden party, children were invited to go so it was aimed mainly at them... NOT teenage Harry potter fans " - Harry Potter isnt only 4 teenagers, JKR said that her books are aimed at children herself, if it was for teenagers, they wouldnt have shown it at the "CHILDREN'S garden party" innit

Posted by mischiefmanaged128 Jun 25th 2006

Yeah, "The Queen's Handbag" idea does seem pretty lame, but honestly, any American president would not put the time and effort to throw such an awesome party, nor would they care enough! I'm really jealous of the British people who could've gone (what an opprtunity to see JK Rowling, Dan Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Matthew Lewis, and other celebrities all in one place!), and I think the Queen is really sweet to do this; it wasn't mandatory. It's the thought that counts.

Um...MUGGLENETTERS! The video doesnt work. A white page full of tiny letters pops up! :( Hurry! Im from Michigan & am soo bored & jealous right now! Lol

What are they talking about when they first walk into the common room?' Hermione says something like 'It doesn’t make sense and they're vegetarian'. Ron replies 'Hermione, it's a joke'. They mention peeves despite him never appearing in the films - maybe it was a hint at people this was a representation of the books not the films, since it was a literature themed party. Final point - Harry said the ministry use veritaserum on people, which we know isn’t true.

I thought it was cool! I liked it! God, you people...it was cute. I liked it.

So, Mathew's hair looked ridiculous in a comb over, Rupert's looked like it lost a battle with a blender, and Daniel's hair looked WAY better when it was a little longer :-( The skit wasn't that bad though, it did get me anxious for OOTP though!

Posted by ValGal292 Jun 25th 2006

sorry but i don't like dan's haircut :-(

Posted by YouKnowWhoIam Jun 25th 2006

That's a really beautiful picture of Jo. Don't you agree?

Posted by beccabear747 Jun 25th 2006

I loved the HP clip! I loved loved loved Rupert, Dan, and Matt! Emma, on the other hand bothered the whole time. Her hair, har make up, her acting. Usually She's a good actress, but in this thing she seemed way to worried about the friggen handback, like it was one of Voldemort's horcruxes or something!

Posted by snuffles318 Jun 25th 2006

the whole thing was corny

Posted by larafabulousx9o Jun 25th 2006

well Emma did something horrid to her hair, and the Queen looks pretty angry. JK looks nice though...

Posted by quidditchplayer Jun 25th 2006

I saw the clip they recorded and I really liked it. I liked that little script more than all the stuff Kloves has written for all HP movies. He never gave Dan the opportunity to really show the sarcastic side of our hero, and in this little clip we can see Dan can do it brilliantly. Even the other characters are a little more like they are in the books. Although I still don't see the Hermione, Ron and Neville I imagine. Anyway, it was great to be able to see this clip while we wait for OotP. And in my opinion WB should give the opportunity for this scriptwriter to write a HP movie script.

Posted by Tina Jun 25th 2006

well where\s the ending. It was most entertaining but I don't yet know if she got her reading glasses back.

Posted by Brendaisrupertsgurl Jun 25th 2006

It was cool, even if it they did cut JK Rowling out, it was funny, cute!!!! lol, i enjoyed watching it!

Posted by seerofdoom Jun 25th 2006

Yeah i cant wait till she says the book is going well and is out as a matter of my opionion

Posted by NickM Jun 25th 2006

GeorgusGirl you need DivX to be able to play the video this is probably why it appeared white and did not play properly. And Tina, yes she gets her glasses back. Well the video today was really cool and i cant wait for JKR interview tomorrow on Richard & Judy!

Posted by DecemberDrops Jun 25th 2006

Not QUITE there . . . but almost. (sighs) I would love to meet readers who loved my stories, too!

Not QUITE there . . . but almost. (sighs) I would love to meet readers who loved my stories, too! It's good that it rarely annoys her to meet her readers.

Posted by Grey Jun 25th 2006

I don't think I have the right software to see the video... Was it any good?

Posted by Holly09 Jun 25th 2006

It's not fair. It seems as if the UK gets all the HP stuff on TV (like that skit thing and JK being on some talk show tommorow). In other parts of the world (like here in Indiana, USA) there is absolutely no Harry Potter anything going on. I am going to see JK in New York, but I have to fly all the way to New York (which is not that close) to see her.

Posted by freakinHEIGHTS Jun 25th 2006

i suppose it was alright. more for younger children yes...emma seemed too dramatic i think. was she wearing earrings? :/ i know nothing ever happens in my state much either...seriously everything is in the uk or new york. ugh. :/

Posted by TinaL Jun 25th 2006

I love the skit, Dan was perfect spot on in every line, Rupert was funny but pveracted in some parts and Emma didn't move too much her eyebrow. Emma at the Queen's party looked very young and pretty, Mathew looked very tall and well dress and Rupert looked tired and very casual as always, I guess no matter what we will always see him wearing a t-shirt!

Posted by kaeli Jun 25th 2006

Haha! I really liked the video! I thought it was gonna be so lame, but it actually turned out to be pretty good and actually pretty funny. Nice to have while I'm so (im)patiently awaiting the next movie!

Posted by crookshanks800 Jun 25th 2006

When did accio become akkio?????

Posted by mysduende Jun 25th 2006

Wow. What a disappointed. The acting seemed stilted and some of the dialog was spoken so fast it was too hard to grasp anything let alone humor. And Emma Watson has GOT to stop raising her eyebrows and sounding so dramatically frantic with every single line. And can't the Queen smile? What a sour face. JKR looks frumpy in her matronly dress with ugly huge bobble beads. Not too tasteful or classy. Methinks she's trying to dress similiarly to the Queen.

Ron said Voldemort. Um, Ron would never said Voldemort. And even Ron was flabergasted when Hermione said it book 5. See Wb, even in a tiny little skit you miss the detalis. Overall it was cute and Harry said Peeves! PEEVES! I'm taking that little clue that Peeves is in movie 5. I can't wait for movie 5!

Posted by chocolateraisins Jun 25th 2006

I thought Dan was hilarious, but why was Emma so serious...?

Posted by wandaXmaximoff Jun 25th 2006

I'd have loved to see the book reading, but oh well. The show was cute, and it amused me, even if it didn't amuse my three-year-old son! The Hogwarts skit was funny, and I loved the line about Voldy having a handbad ROFL :D. The acting was a bit iffy though, and what's up with Dan's hair?! I can't wait for the Jo interview tomorrow, I hope she answers some decent questions, and I hope Richard doesn't annoy her too much!

Posted by GeorgusGirl Jun 25th 2006

Thanks NickM! I've watched it now! You rock! Wow..the video wasn't what I expected..They talked wayy too fast! Eeek! Lol. Well..in the pic the Queen of England looked like, well..old & like any other cranky old Grandma! Queen..haha that sounds soo weird! We don't have Queens in the USA..hahahaha..sorry..Anyways..back to the pic..Rupert actually looked nice smiling..yes..but Emma looked, well young like stated above but WOW..she really doesn't seem to care too much about her looks..I mean..she didnt do anything to her hair! But maybe it was just that one shot that made her look like back to her Chamber of Secrets looks era..but we know she won't look like that in the movies thank goodness! She is a good actress tho..over dramatic..yes..but good!

Posted by gryffingirl99 Jun 25th 2006

i wanna live in great britain! lol. i live in the usa, and we cant watch the party on tv... im sooo sad *sob*............. only 7 books..... jk is really ending the series..... wow.... i was hoping she would write more...... its finaly happening.... what will we do when its over? will we ever visit mugglenet again??? will there ever be more news in the news collum??????? wow.... its ending.....

Posted by GeorgusGirl Jun 25th 2006

OMG! I just realized..Emma Watson had bangs..FULL-FLEDGED BANGS! The kind little girls have! Not the long ones on half the face like girls do now..but short..eyebrowlength bangs across her face! EWW! At least she tries to put them to the side! Please tell me if that is like..a sick fashion they have in England!

Posted by TriWizKid Jun 25th 2006

Man, i wish i was there.Dang.

Posted by veelagirl Jun 25th 2006

I was so excited that I haven't even looked at the skit yet! I wish that I had a station that I could have watched the Queen's party on!
