Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.

Story highlights (Digg this story!):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.

It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:

Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.

"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."

Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

i hope it's good!

Posted by Pride Mar 12th 2008

Harry potter fandom will go longer with two movies plus it is amlost insured it will be done right with Yates! 3rd?

Posted by Clark Mar 12th 2008

NO! One movie! You don't do that to people! Oh, grgh. The more the merrier, I suppose... I like all to be in one movie though... One Seven hour movie... The End. Clark (D69)

Posted by cigar95 Mar 12th 2008

It will be interesting to see what the two are called. Will it be something simple like "DH 1" and "DH 2"? Or will they come up with a completely different title for the first one, which might not even mention the "Deathly Hallows"?

Posted by brunetteginny Mar 12th 2008

OMG yes!!! can't wait.. finally finally yayayayayyya omg omg yes. i don't think its just for the money, but they were still going to be longer movies an thats all i care about!!!!

Posted by Kourin Mar 12th 2008

OMG YAY! That's so exciting!

Posted by vive Mar 12th 2008

oh wow. can't say it came as a surprise and i'm happy with the split but not with Yates

Posted by l00nyl0veg00d Mar 12th 2008

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by potter_fan2 Mar 12th 2008

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by slugclubgirl77 Mar 12th 2008

WoW!! so its really going to be two films! im happy!!! I just hope they do include EVERYTHING! [: 6th?

Posted by Miss_Malfoy Mar 12th 2008

OMG!!!!!!!! Guys, we no longer have just two more movies to go...we have 3!!!!!!!!! And David Yates is back!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Lady_of_the_Dark_March Mar 12th 2008

I am sitting here, shrieking my head off!!!! (My family is currently thinking of sending me to the loony bin.) This is the best news I've heard yet. The Harry Potter fandom will get a few more extra years of movie news. I'm glad they decided to make it two parts. As they said, nothing COULD be cut out, so logically, you keep everything in. Glad that Jo's O.KK. with it. It all depends on her, mostly. David Yates. I've yet to see whether I'm excited or dissapointed. I've only seen OOTP by him. Gonna wait until HBP, to make a judgement.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

Okay well first of all I am so excited that they also have the release dates out, and they're not that far apart! I'm sad though that there will be NOTHING POTTER in 2009. No book ... movie ... NOTHING. It'll be boring. Two whole years between those movies. All I can say is, WHY? Why would they wait so long between filmings? But anyway. I am so excited because there will be so many less cuts. And Clark ... that makes no sense. There would never, ever be a seven-hour Harry Potter movie. This is as good as it's getting. Would you rather have it one two-hour movie? Didn't think so.

Posted by LoonyLuna127 Mar 12th 2008

Yay! I was hoping they'd split it into two...sorta. I'd like it if it were more of an intermission format.

Posted by Ryanhbp Mar 12th 2008

YAYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA YAYAYAY!!!!!! I was sorta sure that this would happen, and now it did!!!! Any word yet on the live mugglecast?

Posted by jules10622 Mar 12th 2008

Awesome! I think the split was the right decision. I just hope they set it up so that the first movie's ending isn't too unsatisfying.

Posted by member_of_SPEW Mar 12th 2008

I've been conflicted about this, but I'm glad they've finally decided (or decided to let us know...) And if Jo likes the idea, then I'm ok with it. cigar95, the linked article says, "The films will be titled, simply, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II," according to producer David Heyman."

Posted by cigar95 Mar 12th 2008

OK, never mind, I find the answer - they take the simple approach to titling the films. I also see that will be a full two-year gap before "DH1", instead of the year-and-a-half of the recent films. So this is sort of like the last two "Back to the Future" films that were produced concurrently and released just a few months apart.

Posted by dachosenone Mar 12th 2008

I love it, but i wish they'd just put in an intermission, now we have to wait six months inbetween films. They should definatly split it when Greyback shows up. I don't know if I like Yates, he did a good job in 5, but it was still more romantic comedy-esque, less Harry Potter. I'll wait to see 6 before I make that judgement.

Posted by fantfreak Mar 12th 2008

OMG! YAY! TOO FILMS! BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAVID YATES>:(

Posted by adriandoher Mar 12th 2008

YES!! the movie is gonna rock!!! yesss two premiers! =)=)=)

Posted by Playwright06 Mar 12th 2008

NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Can you tell that I am obviously against splitting the movies? EVEN WORSE, YATES IS STILL DIRECTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS THE END OF POTTER AS WE KNOW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by horace123slughorn Mar 12th 2008

i am sooo excited, they can finally fit stuff into it. i kinda figured this would happen

Posted by randomchat Mar 12th 2008

Not YATES!? Are you guys making a live podcast?

Posted by lunalovegoodsnumberonefan Mar 12th 2008

WOW i am so happy, and like other people said before about time. They had to do it,cause if they only made one it would not be long enough, with all the chock full of info that is in the Deathly Hallows. This is really big news, and that David Yates is the only director to direct which will be four Potter films cause OOTP,HBP,and, the two parts of the Deathly Hallows.

Posted by ElderWand07 Mar 12th 2008

BOUT TIME! IVE BEEN WAITING AND WHERE IS THE LIVE MUGGLECAST! IM NOT HAPPY WITH DAVID YATES CAUSE I WANTED ALFONSO CAURON TO DO BUT!!.....im happy. -EW7

Posted by pygmypuff811 Mar 12th 2008

THIS MIGHT JUST BE THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE. I'M SO FRIGGIN EXCITED!!

Posted by phoenixtears81 Mar 12th 2008

EXCITING NEWS, but hold your horses! Just because they said "you cannot remove elements of this book", it doesn't mean that everything from the book will be in the movie. It just means that they can't remove any subplots from the book. They are all important. Just don't expect every little detail from the book to be in the movies. For instance, Mad Eye Moody's eye on Umbridge's door may or may not be in the movies; it was heart wrenching, but not particularly important. I am very excited that they will make it into two films. It is probably going to be done the same way as last two films of Matirx were done. They will probably film it all at once and then release Volume 2 of DH a few months after Volume 1 comes out. I bet they will either stop Volume 1 after the scene at Malfoy Manor or just before the final Battle at Hogwarts.

Posted by hermy62442 Mar 12th 2008

well, at least we officially know. So when's the live MuggleCast?!?

Posted by tomriddle Mar 12th 2008

YES!!!!! They have no choicebut to be close to the book. And they're six months apart! I think thats perfect. It's great to hear that JKR has been to the HBP set a lot! I'm also totally pumped about David Yates! I know people didn't like him, but I did. Plus I think its a great idea to have someone who has done the films before. A new director wouldn't feel as loyal. This is so great! Any ideas where they'll split it? I'm going to guess just afterthey destroy the first Horcrux and Ron returns. Awesome! And part I comes out only a year after HBP!

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

Ehhhh....not really sure how I feel about this. Overall I thought Yates did a good job with OOTP, although it is my least favorite movie because SO MUCH was cut out. I'm okay with splitting the movie in two, as long as we don't have to wait very long for the second half....Ah, well. At least they'll be able to fit more in.

Posted by randomchat Mar 12th 2008

I hated they way the orchestrated OotP. Yates sucks. I'm glad they're splitting it into two parts, I just hope it's the intermission-style (for lack of a better term) and not actually TWO movies.

Posted by bobfredc3q Mar 12th 2008

So when is the live MuggleCast?

Posted by GivrHellPeeves Mar 12th 2008

DUDE!!!! HARRY POTTER 7 SPLIT INTO TWO!!! HOW CAN YOU NOT BE EXCITED!?!?!? THAT MEANS NOTHING IS BEING EDITED!!!! STOP CRYING ABOUT IT!!!! THIS IS AWESOME!!!!! I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!

Posted by lunaclone45 Mar 12th 2008

woah woah woah! No Hermione and S.P.E.W? How are they gonna do the kiss between ron and hermione?!?!?

Posted by randomchat Mar 12th 2008

"...one to be released in November 2010 and the second in May 2011." NO NO NO

Posted by Hogwartsgirl52 Mar 12th 2008

ZOMG! I don't want it to be split but if it's amazing then I won't care. About time they released this info. lunaclone45 is right; what else is Ron going to say to get Hermione to kiss him? Maybe that bit about food transfiguration? When's MuggleCast?

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

Oh, my, I hadn't thought of that, lunaclone. Then again, what are they supposed to do about "The Princes Tale" when they left out the 'mudblood' scene?

Posted by AuntieEm2 Mar 12th 2008

Okay, I understand a lot of the excitement. I just think that releasing them 6 months apart is a little drastic... I mean, really. SIX months? SIX? Just a little surprising. I'd prefer them being released maybe a week or two apart. But SIX? ...so when IS the live MC?

Posted by Kimmy Mar 12th 2008

I really wanted to see just one but if JK is ok with it thats fine. It better be worth it.

Posted by iwantorlando05 Mar 12th 2008

I'm still sooooo freakin' excited about this. But I can't believe we have to wait TWO YEARS after movie 6 comes out until part one comes out and THEN we have to wait 6 MONTHS for part two. THIS IS GOING TO BE TORTURE! There should be a live mugglecast coming out soon too...right?

Posted by Wizard4243 Mar 12th 2008

How freaking sweet is this Well will get to see all of the book and hell yes ill be able to see my favorite charactors. Like Bill and Charley ohh hell yes this is soo sweet.

Posted by missinconspicuous Mar 12th 2008

You guys do realise the two films will be SIX WHOLE MONTHS apart? That is EXACTLY what I was scared of when I heard the splitting rumours. The only decent thing about this announcement was confirmation on Yates ... why can't we have Michael Goldenburg back too, he is a much better screenwritier than Kloves ...

Posted by griff_girl Mar 12th 2008

This is absolutely brilliant!! This way they'll be able to fit in FAR more information, which i think was the issue in the last film, and also, A FEW MORE YEARS OF THE HARRY POTTER REGIME! YAAAAAAY!!!!!!

Posted by chaibabachai Mar 12th 2008

:( not. cool.

Posted by soof Mar 12th 2008

I have mixed feelings...There isn't really a good place to split it. Also..LIVE MUGGLECAST. Andrew posted the info on the mugglecast website. It is tommorow at 9 I believe.

Posted by Bogus Mar 12th 2008

I don't absolutely hate the idea of two movies, but just think how much the DVD set is going to cost for both movies plus extras. That will show their true decency. You'd think they'd have to release the DVD for Part 1 before Part 2's wide release, but their character will be shown on the price of the set.
