Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.

Story highlights (Digg this story!):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.

It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:

Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.

"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."

Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

If nobody realized this yet, the live MuggleCast is going to be tomorrow at 9 pm

Posted by hpwiz812 Mar 12th 2008

FINE! FINE! split it into two! i dont agree with it, but fine! All i say is that EVERY LITTLE DETAIL has to be there. They got no excuse now, they have two movies to put all that info in. Also, all the scenes must be there, including but not limiting to: ch.4's sky battle, the wedding, Godric's Hallows, Mr. Lovegood's scene, Malfoy Manor, Gringotts, Battle of Hogwarts(duh), and the Epilogue. Also, since now I have to get accustomed to this idea, one question: what are the two halves going to be named? Deathly Hallows vol.1 and vol.2? and where are they going to cut it in half? Will they release a DVD containing BOTH parts so I can watch the whole 4-hour movie (they have no excuse now, I expect both parts to be no less than 2 hours)....let me stop whining, and look at the bright side: it looks to be that the final movie will be the most faithful adaptation yet. :)

Posted by SDwhatsthat Mar 12th 2008

I like the idea of having two parts, but I'm not sure if it's right for Harry Potter. I mean what is the beginning of part two going to be, "Last time on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." I'm kinda undecided on Yates, he's okay, but we'll have to wait, and then wait again.

Posted by HPfanatic84 Mar 12th 2008

They better be the best two HP movies EVER, or I will be very very very (...etc...) annoyed. I cannot yet say how horrible of an idea it is since we've not seen the movies yet. But David Yates-not a fan. :/ I'm not loving this idea.

Posted by rob1007 Mar 12th 2008

NOT DAVID YATES! HE IS COMPLETELY SCREWING UP THE 6TH FILM!!!!!!!

Posted by thediarywithin Mar 12th 2008

I think that it's great but then again why so far apart. Why not have them a month a part from each other. Oh well. It just means they can get pretty much the whole book because the whole book is that important.

Posted by hpwiz812 Mar 12th 2008

one more thing: I just hope they know what they are doing!

Posted by Godric_83 Mar 12th 2008

erm.... im not too excited by this recent news. i was expecting for something like this to happen, but i don't think i'm prepared to wait between both movies.

Posted by iluvdolphins Mar 12th 2008

OOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMGGGGGGGGGGGGG I DONT LIKE THIS 2 DIFFERENT DATES!!!!!!ITS NOT FAIR!!!!!!!! PLUS 2010 AND 2011 DO U PEOPLE NO HOW LONG THAT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT IM STILL EXCITED

Posted by emma_sophia Mar 12th 2008

AHHHHHH I JUST BEFORE I CLICKED ON MUGGLENET I WAS THINKING THAT WE SHOULD BE GETTING THE ANNOUNCEMENT SOON AND THERE IT WAS! AHHHHAAAA LIVE MUGGLECAST! I was hoping Alfonso would direct it but oh well...

Posted by potterprophet7 Mar 12th 2008

OMG FINALLY! does this mean that there is gonna be a live mugglecast soon???!! i hope so.. it stinks they are soo far apart!!! and thats gonna be during my senior year in high school!! gosh i might not even have time to see it especially not the second part...SAT!! aaaaggghhh!!! thats such a long time away!

Posted by rob1007 Mar 12th 2008

hmm im glad the dates arent so far apart!

Posted by tenner91 Mar 12th 2008

OMFG that is huge. at least we get TONS of details and TONS of movie and David Yates is directing!! yes!

Posted by hockeyquidditchplayer13 Mar 12th 2008

YES! I've been waiting to hear this for ages! Sooo glad the movie is split, but I wish they releasd A LOT closer together!!!! That's like 6 months they're making us wait!!!

Posted by lumosandnox Mar 12th 2008

*SHRIEKS* TIMES ONE THOUSAND!!!!!!!!!!!! ( My mum and stepdad thought surely Dan Rad was annouced gay or somthing, for I was screaming as such!) I'm glad it will be split, not about how long there is in between though!!!! Now we all KNOW it's for money! And WTFH????? DAVID YATES?!!?!?!?! He is the person who screwed Order of the Pheonix up, and who is probably screwing the six one up too....I know this is a bit rash, but maybe he'll contract some Very contagious disease and not be able to do the movie.....just wishfull thinking!

Posted by shadowkitten Mar 12th 2008

That's...long. But we get the plot so... it's a trade off. The entire package at one time, from a marketing standpoint, would probably seem too cumbersome for the theaters to run and, let's face it, they'd probably prefer the chance to milk the cashflow out as much as possible. That's fine. More Potter, more happiness. I wonder whether they will release the DVDs together. I bet they'll do that in two parts, as well, so they can get their money, and the fans can have part one viewing parties before part two is released. I'm afraid that, for closure in the first film, they will need to treat the two parts as separate movies - and consequentially take other creative liberties. I think that they really want to get everything in and make a spot-on interpretation of the book, this time. Of course, that means they're going to have to pull out the ignored backstory from the gaping closet of plotholes, if they plan on having any of it make sense to average/movie-only viewers. Good luck.

Posted by britishwannabe Mar 12th 2008

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! They might even be accurate and true to the book!!! YESSSSSSSS! Excellent! But, 6 MONTHS APART?!?!! Errr....possibly too far a distance away? BUT I'M darn HAPPY ABOUT THIS! :D

Posted by iwantorlando05 Mar 12th 2008

I think a good place for part one to start is when the trio escape from the Lovegood's house. And then part two could start with the sound of Potterwatch and then the camera can focus on the trio listening to it. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!! someone in another forum had that idea. it's freakin' awesome!

Posted by honorsgeek Mar 12th 2008

worst idea i have ever heard of. seriously?? it doesnt even make sense. half of the book could be cut out and no one would notice because they could just shorten the part where harry, ron, and hermione are hanging out in the woods for ten chapters. gawd. bad idea. i cant believe this is actually true.

Posted by bobfredc3q Mar 12th 2008

lumosandnox how dumb are you? Heyman just said that it was "purely out of creative reasons". Which means that they are NOT doing it for the money. Try to understand that they're doing it to include all they possibly can.

Posted by honeydukes0209 Mar 12th 2008

omgomgomg - this has to be the best news in ages!!! I started shrieking and jumping up and down when I saw this!! 2 films!! Y A Y!!! I didn't exactly love yate's directing, but I'll have to live with it, I guess...=p

Posted by fireboltz360 Mar 12th 2008

yay!!!!!!! when's the freakin live show?????????

Posted by Mz_Grint12 Mar 12th 2008

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOO OOOOOOOOO!! lol. god job wb kudos!

Posted by sariebell147 Mar 12th 2008

ARE YOU KIDDING ME! omg... did they not WATCH the 5th movie and see how much idiot yates screwed it up! AND THEY ARE LETTING HIM FINISH! omg... im not even gonna bother to go and see it... i am happy bout the split but letting that IDIOT ruin the last movies... it will break my heart... Jo what are you thinking???

Posted by lumosandnox Mar 12th 2008

bobfredc3q- Heyman is part of the movies. I'm sure they want ot do it for creative reasons. But do you honestly believe the big hhigh up people really care what we think? I mean Just as many people would go and see a split movie with an intermission only paying for it ONCE as people would to see it in November and May, and pay twice! Do you listen to mugglecast or what? Call me dumb, and you're insulting them too.

Posted by secrets_and_magic Mar 12th 2008

cool Im not that sure what to think about the splitting thing...I think I'll wait to see... it could be good it could be bad... and about Yates... he's filmed Harry Potter before which is good, but the 5th was a little to dark and depressing for me... did Harry even smile once? Dark is good, but it should be a little realistic.

Posted by peroxwhy_gen Mar 12th 2008

Oop, looks like we get to watch everyone die.

Posted by angelina_johnson92 Mar 12th 2008

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! This cannot be happening! He is going to cut everything out and replace them with sex scenes! I can't descibe how angry I am. Maybe its a nightmare. Somebody pinch me. :(

Posted by 2obsessed4u Mar 12th 2008

FINALLY!! The announcement came!! There have been so many leaks and so much speculation, I'm surprised that it took this long! Oh, yeah, and I find it really, really funny that right before this post on the post about Matthew Lewis, Andrew was like, "an announcement should be imminent," and now we have this amazing news! Personally, I think it's great. I don't even care about the cost of the DVD, where they're going to split the movie, or any of the trivial stuff. I just really hope they can do the book justice this time-- but I have faith in them! And one director directing three of the movies? I don't know. I think that David Yates is probably really skilled, and this will definately give him a chance to get to know everybody, but I really don't know. OotP is my favourite book, so of course I'd never be fully satisfied with the movie, even though it was excellent. I am going to have to wait for HBP to make my final judgement about David Yates. And live MC, baby!! I really hope that I can make the time to try to call in; I really want to be on! But even if I don't, YAY FOR LIVE MC!

Posted by eyeheartlupin Mar 12th 2008

I'm sooooo happy they aren't going to be cutting it all up like every other book! Of course it's ironic that I thought this book dragged on and I could see how they could easily chop pieces out.. BUT I'm excited they aren't going to. Still.. six months is a ridiculously long time between the two parts, don't you all think? Still. Twice as much HP. I'm glad the legacy continues.. I think I'm warming to the idea of drawing it out. It's like.. five hours of HP for DH :D .... can they go back and do this for all of the movies? Hehe

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

Well here's the thing, those of you who don't want it to be so far apart. Would you rather one be in November and one in May, or have to wait for BOTH until May? See what I mean?

Posted by kyleftw826 Mar 12th 2008

i could really care less. i just want them to be perfect. but what i wanted to ask is, what do you think they'll title them? HP DH Part 1 and 2? or just DH?

Posted by bobfredc3q Mar 12th 2008

lumosandnox.... 1-Most HP fans would consider it worth it to pay for two films to see everything from Deathly Hallows be included in two films. 2-you're dumb. 3-I honestly think that the big high up ppl HAVE to care about what we think because we're the ones who PAY for the movies anyway. They have to care about our opinions because if we don't pay then they make no profit. 4- you're dumb

Posted by tophatjenkins Mar 12th 2008

o god. im so excited but the wait will be forever

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

Okay, guys, read the whole article before you comment. It says they're called Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Deathly Hallows: Part 2. (Though I think they might be using roman numerals. But whatever.) Also, I agree that it is DEFINITELY worth paying twice to see a film adaptation that will stick so well to the books. Or, that we HOPE will stick so well to the books.

Posted by iwantorlando05 Mar 12th 2008

Oh shut up. Yates did not screw up movie 5. He made a somewhat boring and too long book into a great movie. Plus Yates isn't the one who decides what gets cut out of the movies. the scriptwriter decides that. so you can blame Michael Goldenberg for leaving stuff out. Although, i sure as hell can't think of anything important that was left out of movie 5. Plus you should wait until you see movie 6 before you judge Yates.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

Yes, I agree with the person before me. People have GOT to stop blaming the directors for what's cut out of the movies! Hate the screenwriter, not the director. Don't you people know anything about the theater? If your favorite scene wasn't in the movie, don't go writing hate mail to Yates. HE DIDN'T DO IT.

Posted by Steelsheen Mar 12th 2008

finally official word! and Yates is a lock. i wonder if he's gonna get that raise LOL. i was kinda hoping for a bit more imaginative title for the two parter, rather than the boring Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2

Posted by hpintwense06 Mar 12th 2008

Sweet. I'm glad that they're not cutting anything from the 7th movie, but I will still hate waiting for the second and half. It's just like when Pirates 2 & 3 came out - they were basically just 1 whole split in half - and I was verrrryyy mad about waiting for the second part. But the wait was worth it in my opinion, so I hope it's worth it for HP7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Alice_W Mar 12th 2008

This is great news!! And I don't even care that they're six months apart, that just means it takes more time for the films to be over. =) And I really don't mind that David Yates is directing, I liked his job in OotP. The only bad thing I can see in all of this is that we won't get John Williams. I was really hoping he would come back for the final movie...

Posted by i_am_nagini_777 Mar 12th 2008

I step away from my computer for twenty minutes and this is what happens?

Posted by loveronweasley Mar 12th 2008

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by hplvr92 Mar 12th 2008

YAAAAY! I loved the reasoning that Heyman gave, it makes a lot of sense. This way we'll be able to see everything and it (hopefully) won't feel rushed. I'm going to go crazy during the wait, but I'll live. Plus with Yates directing, the last 4 films will flow together better than the first 4 did. If that makes any sense... Anyway, I'm very excited! Everyone freaking about the 6 months thing (like I am) let's think about it logically. Part 1 will be in theaters for about 2 months, they then have to ship out Part 2 and get that ready. It's going to be rough, but they couldn't have put it any closer together in my opinion. :( Anyway, I'm really psyched, this is going to be neat. I just hope it pays off.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

Well if they changed the actual title of the books for the movie ... that would make a lot of people angry. And I, too, think that it will be worth the wait to see both parts of the movie. Now I'm just on the edge of my seat waiting to find out where they'll cut it! Keep a lookout for important points around the middle of the book ... those are prime suspects ... :]

Posted by Dobbysgirl13 Mar 12th 2008

OMG OMG OMG!!! THat is great!!! I wasn't sure @ first when i heard of the rumours, but I am sooo excited now! He gave a pretty good reason but I mean like at least they aren't going to ruin the film. I'm glad it is coming out in 2010, you know! Now they are going to have enough time!! I am sooo glad!!!

Posted by hpintwense06 Mar 12th 2008

Live MuggleCast?? oh and I haddn't realized that it'd be a full 2 years between 6 & 7. that's sad =[

Posted by chommy Mar 12th 2008

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NOT FRICKIN YATES! HE HAS RUINED HARRY POTTER F*CK THAT DOUCHE!

Posted by rebel_hermionex7 Mar 12th 2008

I'm fine with it, as long as it's good. I would have rather had a intermission tyoe thing, like they suggested on Mugglecast. Speaking of, LIVE Mugglecast tommorrow! Yeah!!

Posted by Looney_Lovegood_Fan Mar 12th 2008

THIS IS REALLY EXCITING AND REALLY SCARY!!!! First off they better be good. I am not completly sure I like Yates as a director.... Second since they are going to be split there shouldn't be that much cut from the books. Third, the names?? They can't call both the movies "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"?? Can they? I don't think they should. Will they call them Part I and Part II??
