Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.Story highlights (Digg this story!):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.
It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:
Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.
"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."
Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

Live MuggleCast tomorrow night!!! =]
Will everybody quit bitching about David Yates "ruining" Harry Potter. He doesn't write the script, that was Michael Goldenberg.
Hmmm...well, on the plus side, at least we'll be getting a decent movie for once...but having to wait for the second half is going to be torture. How long? Six months? That part sucks. But at least they're not changing the title (I don't know why it would ever occur to them to do that anyway). But about HBP...Dan Radcliffe says its the funniest one so far...hmmm, this could be interesting (hopefully in a good way).
sigh. well, at least harry potter mania will last a little longer!! =]
WHOOOOT! Oh my gosh!! FINALLLLY! The movie being split in too is an alright solution...even though I much rather an intermission. But that means everything will be included!
Dan Radcliffe thinks it's the funniest one so far?! That's TOTALLY exciting! I can't wait to see this movie! And yes everyone quit with the David Yates talk. I've said it a thousand times, HE DOESN'T MAKE THE CUTS. If you want to be annoyed about the cuts, be annoyed at the screenwriter! Plus- YES, I totally agree that a MAJOR MAJOR pro to this is that Harry Potter will last just that much longer!!
WOW!!! i wish they were released together!
OMG! I haven't read anyone's response to this, so I can't be swayed as of yet. I am extremely upset. Nov. 2010 and May 2011?!?!? Can't they just cut most of the camping? A lot of it doesn't need to be in a movie! Ohmigod, I am so upset, that I can't even form words.
oh, yeah...why is everyone so worried about the title? The producer (David Heyman) said its just going to be DH Part I and Part II. And why does everyone have to attack Yates? *sigh* He didn't even write the stinkin' script and these novels are SO long. I'm sure he'll do a great job on the 7th.
Oh man I am so depressed about this! I am happy about the 2 films, but DAVID YATES!!! He made the worst of all the Potter films, and now he will be making a total of 4 films. And Cuaron wanted to do it, and even Spielberg expressed interest, but Yates, he is horrible. I may never see another Harry Potter film again.
I guess the best part of this is there's a thanksgiving time movie and a summer movie in the same year! Every year that there's a nov. movie, I wish there's a summer movie & vice versa. Yay :)
we're going to have to wait two years between half blood prince and deathly hallows!!!
YYEESS!! NNOO!! I really like that it is split into 2 parts, thats so amazing!!! But David Yates will reck the movie(s)!!!!
Guys, I know you all want it to be intermission-style ... but think about it. They have to film both. If they were going to do it intermission style, the movie would be released in May 2011. At least we have Part I to tide us over! Yet another reminder: DAVID. YATES. DOES. NOT. WRITE. THE. SCRIPT.
I hate Yate's filming. The 5th HP was the worst out of all of them. I can't believe this. I grew up with Harry Potter, and I was so excited that the last film will come out the year I graduate, I thought it was effin awesome. Now, I can't have that. I'm just really disappointed they are doing this. It's not right. I can't believe J.K. is supporting this either. I thought she would be the one to say no. This sucks beyond belief.
Does anyone have any ideas on how they are going to fix their S.P.E.W. mistake? (aka get hermione to kiss ron?)
yesssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!1 thats great!! uates is awesome!!! yeah fawkeshermione either theyll cut it out... amke a new scene or add teh SPEW in now
Haha fawkeshermione171 that's a good question. Maybe they'll include it the same way and people that don't know about SPEW because they haven't read the books will just think Ron is being sensitive and that is why Hermione kisses him. It can probably still work without the SPEW plot, but the fans will know the real reason.
Well said, heronxobsessed74. And fawkeshermione17, they'll probably just add Hermione saying that she wants to star S.P.E.W. when they're dealing with Kreacher or something and then have Ron mention it before the kiss. But, more likely, they'll have Ron say something else like that before they kiss.
Ahhh! That is SUCH a good point! WE GET A WHOLE NEW HOW-RON-AND-HERMIONE-GOT- TOGETHER format! ALL RIGHT! Now I'm SO excited.
I don't understand why everybody is saying that David Yates ruined OOTP. I loved that movie; if you're upset about how much was cut out, look to the screenwriters, that's their fault. Besides, I doubt anything was cut without JK Rowling's approval, so if she didn't mind, why did you? Also, I love the idea of two movies. I don't like the thought of things being cut out either, so with two, they get to keep a lot more in. I'm thinking they'll end the first one when Ron leaves the trio, and pick up in the second movie with just Hermione and Harry together. Thoughts?
wow if it's split in two, i wonder if we will get to see EVERYTHING. like WOW! yay more movies to look forward to, but i would've been happier with one LONG movie. but whatever. one more year to add to the harry potter anxiously waiting feeling. ahaha yah.. but kinda sad nothing is going on in 2009... boo >
Hmmm....good point, HPAlwaysN4ever, I can see that happening. (although I still wish they'dve worked SPEW in somehow...but oh well.)
or maibe theyll be like its not reated so they ll leave the kissing out.. juss a thot
Yay! Now they have no excuse when it comes to putting everything in! Although i would have liked it if the 2 movies were seperated by a 20minute interval.. not a zillion months! but i guess it;s hard work!

If they put in all the camping, and all the watching, I will be bored out of my mind, as will everyone else. It is simply not interesting in a movie form. In the books, we read Harry's thoughts. And wth would thye put SPEW in it now? I'd be upset. They can't fix their old mistakes. Just like they can't suddenly being up how Fleur is a veela. It wouldn't make sence so late in the films especially to the only movie watchers.
Can't wait 'till 6 tomarrow
Well, I agree with Sectumsempra84 about thi Yates thing and also about where you think they should split the movie. But, sirius_lee_G, they can't take out Ron and Hermione's first kiss--its just way too important.
I'm very excited! But yeah it is a total shame that we have TWO FULL YEARS between movies 6 and 7 AND that there is NO POTTER in 2009. But it'll all be worth it for a movie 7 that's true to the books!! Will it not?
professorlongbottom - I agree, I don't think they should just throw SPEW in now...I was talking about movie 4 in my other comment.
Yeah, I really wish they put all the little stuff in movie 4. It could have been thrown into a simple conversation or something.
I know, I always wish they could fit every little detail in, but I know they can't. But that's one reason I'm happy they're splitting the 7th film, there'll be more time to fit everything in.
Erm... The thought of two movies is both totally awsome, because it means that it will be even longer 'til everything (a.k.a- both books AND movies) is over. But then again, its a bummer because it means I will have to wait 3 years for the first half and four for the second! And I am SO EXCITED that Yates is going to do it!!! In my oppinion, Yates has done the best job out of all the other Directors (so far), and I'm totally sure that he will do amazing on DH. I can hardly wait!!!!
I don't want the 7th film to spilt. I know, one of the reasons nothing is coming out in 2009 is because of Daniel Radcliffe's filming a different movie, but I dunno. I hate this. 7 books =7 movies. Simple as that. I hate 7 books= 8 movies. *sigh*
All right. I seriously just heard someone complaining that they'll be BORED? I just can't believe that. I personally will take as much Potter as I can get. And from the gist of it, they WILL cut lots of camping- it sounds like the battle will be LOOONG. And SPEW ... SPEW is as much of a sideplot as it could be. That was probably one of the first things cut. But that doesn't mean I don't want it to be there ... And, yes, stopping with Ron leaving is a definite possibility.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah I don't know what I think! I'm totally torn. I loved Order Of the Phoenix when I saw for the first time, more I saw it more I hated it... gosh. I just don't know about this. I wanted there to be a new director.
I dunno what to think. Okay part of me is totally squee-y at a two-parter but a part of me is disappointed -- why the hell is the intermission so frikkin long?! And ugh, NOVEMBER of '10 at that? Just for part one? >__< So is it really going to take 2 years to film or are they taking about a year off? And about Yates... well OotP wasn't that bad. I rather liked it There are some quirks that I did hate (main one being the many awkward scenes where characters are just STANDING around... i.e. when they discovered the RoR, they were so STIFF! Who stands at the door with their hands to their sides and just gazes??) but I think HBP will be the deciding factor whether I should be excited or worried.
Murr, I don't really like this idea. I want to see it all together! I thought the best thing would have been to make a really long film with an intermission. I think it's kind of far apart, so it will seem like too separate stories. I hope they make it seem like it is all one story, not like two different ones, like J.K. magically produced another book. Eh. At least that gives us some more time! But it seems so far away now...
heronxobsessed74- Yes, that was me. I said I would be bored with all the camping. If they put all the camping, and all the locket-wearing, I would be bored watching that. Excuse me.
I'll be happy as long as they bring John Williams back for the 7th film...he is just an amazing composer and I adore the soundtracks for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd movies....4th and 5th, not at all. :P But anyways, I'm just curious - what about the whole thing with Snape calling Lily 'mudblood' that they left out of the 5th movie? How on earth are they going to fix that? (I really detested how they did that scene in OOTP movie.)
@ fawkeshermione17-- ME TOO. I hated, hated, hated that scene as well. Besides the fact that it lasted all of 15 seconds, it also left out the only important part of the scene which is when Snape calls Lily a mudblood. How these people get themselves into messes like this...why don't they talk to the fans ever and FIND OUT what is important? Or do a better job of listening to JKR?
They could always show the mudblood scene in the 7th when Harry is looking in the pensive. I think he sees it again anyway.
I think that this is a terrible idea. There isn't a good place anywhere in the book where a split can occur. The best thing to do would be to do what they did with Gone with the Wind. Namely have an intermission. That way people won't have to wait six months to see the rest of the movie. I agree with people that say this is all a way to make more money. If anyone else has previously mentioned the intermission above than great.
Do you guys realize that there has been, like, ONE person complimenting David Yates? Kudos to her. And as for the rest of you, shut up about him already! We've established that you all hate him for cuts that he didn't make. End of story. Sorry if I'm offending you, but it's just terribly aggravating. And I can't belive that the reason no movie is coming out in 2009 is so that Dan can do another movie! That's infuriating. Doesn't he make enough money? And it's not as if he can avoid being typecast NOW. Too late for that! So what's he trying to pull here?
Kelsey06- You are so right! They should talk to us, by surveys or something! We are the ones giving them profit, they could at least give us what we want!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH !!! THEY CANNOT SPLIT IT LIKE THAT!!!! 6 Whole months apart!!! Are they trying to get them selves KILLED??? Cause I'll pull the trigger. I love the idea of it being split but they really should have just made one super-duper long movie instead of releasing them 6 freakin months apart from each other!!!! GAaahhh!HHhhH!H!
oh no!!! we'll have to wait 5 more months to finally see the ending! i
heronxobsessed - just letting you know, in case you thought I was saying I hated Yates' directing, I don't. I actually really liked him for OOTP, there were just a few scenes I just didn't like.
No matter how many people compliment Yates, or say how good the movie will be in two, I hate Yates' filming, and the spilt. I don't care how many people bash this comment. I hate this choice.
