Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.

Story highlights (Digg this story!):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.

It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:

Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.

"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."

Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

Surveys are an awesome idea! And why do you care if they draw it out? I mean, none of us WANT it to be over. And it's NOT about the money. It's to make us happy! And what are we doing? Complaining! They did this for US, guys! Look at all the good things that will come out of this!

I have never been so ecstatic about a piece of film news before! I adore David Yates with all of my heart, he is the ideal director for these movies! That, and I cannot express my love for the idea of having TWO DEATHLY HALLOWS FILMS! This means double the premieres, double the first midnight showings, double the fan craze, double the costume-wearing, double the day-long wait outside the theatre, and [most importantly] DOUBLE THE POTTER! This news has made my life...

Posted by Shirley_hpf Mar 12th 2008

I really don't know if I should be happy about this. Yay, more movies, that's a good thing. But then the first movie wil probably end in the forest-part, which I think was kinda boring. ^^"

I'm happy they're splitting the movie, but I don't want to have to wait 5 months to see the second part.

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

professorlongbottom - I'm not going to bash you, as I really would have prefered Alfonso Cauron (whom I adore). But I still think it should turn out pretty well with Yates.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

Surveys are an awesome idea!! But why do you guys care if they draw it out? It's not as if any of us WANT it to be over. And as for the people who have directed comments at me- I'm not actually mad at you. In some ways, I agree with you. I just was surprised at some of the things you've said.

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

I still want John Williams back!!! If he does come back, I will be fine with whatever else they do.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

By the way, sorry I repeated myself a little. I was having technical issues, and I thought the first comment didn't post.

Posted by Sectumsempra84 Mar 12th 2008

I was just wondering what is it exactly that makes you hate David Yates? I mean, I know you don't like the way OOTP turned out, but what exactly about the movie don't you like that is Yates' fault? Just curious.

Posted by SCPGOH_ad24 Mar 12th 2008

i'm glad that they want to include verything, but i think it might be kinda weird too. imagine: the movie gets up to half way through the book and then its like TO BE CONTINUED: MAY 2011. i think i'd rather have them do like a 4 hour movie with intermision.

Posted by Taylor_the_girl_who_knows_ur_cell_Emmy Mar 12th 2008

I AM HAPPY ABOUT THE SPLIT, W/ IT BEING SOO LONG, BUT I AM NOT HAPPY THAT THE 1ST PART IS WHEN I AM 15 AND THE 2ND IS WHEN I AM 16. AND THE SCIENTIST SAY THE END WILL START, START IN 2011. SOOOOOOOOOOO I HOPE THE THEORY IS WRONG. P.S. EMERSON IS SOO SEXY! LOVE YA!

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

First of all- the director is already chosen, people. And nextly (new word) ... THANK YOU. Someone has asked the question I should have asked ages ago. What is it that you don't like that is Yates' fault? The cuts aren't! So what is it?

Posted by crzyguy662 Mar 12th 2008

I think it's a horrible idea. When it's all over with, I'll have spent 18 dollars to see both parts of a film adaptation of one book. I didn't even spend 18 dollars on the book itself! I'm definitely thinking I'll just skip the theatre and rent it. The movie version is SO not worth $18.

Posted by love_padfoot Mar 12th 2008

wow! finally! i am so glad they finally decided! i did hope, like a lot others, that there would like be an intermission, but im just glad that for once a harry potter movie will consist of the whole fudge book instead of just parts and they to twist around j.k. rowlings beautiful master pieces. i mean it is just so exciting but quite sad at the same time too...... cuz now we are one step closer to the end of harry potter, altho i wud technically count it when i finished the last(and best) book. but i know from when both parts are released it wont really be the end........as long as there are those in need and are loyal, help will always be given to those by the harry potter series. how did you guys like my version of one of dumbledores best phrases????????? lolz. but seriously, if we can stick together and continue talking about the wonderful world of harry potter, it wont be so hard once they are through filming the rest of the series. but i will adit that it will be a sad day when it SEEMS to be all over, but we.... we who waited day after day, month after month for a book and waiting in line for hours that seemed like years, or waiting all night and day till they finally laet you into the theater to see the world uyou know and love so right there almost at your finger tips.......we who wore all our harry potter/hogwarts/gryffindo r/slytherin apperal and items on the first day of school! so my fellow fans with that i say adue' -

YES!

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

Reminder to everyone complaining about the money aspect of the split: You can't possibly know how much it is worthing paying to see this movie until you see it.

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

Well said, love_padfoot!

Posted by crzyguy662 Mar 12th 2008

Um.... I can tell you it is not worth 18 dollars to see any movie. I didn't spend that much on the book, and the movie definitely isn't going to be better than the book. They never are, and never will be.

Posted by HermioneIsMyHero27 Mar 12th 2008

AAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHY DO WE HAVE TO WAIT 6 MONTHS BETWEEN PART 1 AND PART 2?????

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

*worth paying. And yes that was an interesting way of putting it that long post above ... dramatic but fitting. And wasn't the book like $30? The movies are not better than the books, but the books are done, and the movies are all we have left.

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

(see my last comment) Or, in the famous words of George Weasley, 'ear, 'ear.

Posted by siriusnprongs Mar 12th 2008

This is like the worst news I have ever heard! They aren't even giving those of us who actually WANT the whole thing all at once a chance to see it all at once! We have to wait nearly half a year before we get to see the ending! WB and Jo are disappointing me, Jo for the first time ever. And so disappointing are you, Potterfans! A true fan wouldn't care if we were sitting watching Hallows for however long, as long as the makers kept everything in. And I just totally lost my college funds over this from arguing with my mom and my grandmother. Thanks, WB. Thanks a lot.

Posted by Sarah11421041 Mar 12th 2008

OMG! I literally had a heart attack. OMG OMG OMG> I am like hyperventilating. Gosh. I am happy and sad all at the same time.

Posted by raguentnerjr Mar 12th 2008

Glad to hear about the "Deathly Hallows" movies. Now how about doing that for "OotP" . Part 2 can be inserted in the middle of part one. The longest book deserves no less.

Posted by love_padfoot Mar 12th 2008

why thank you fawkeshermione1! and i see your point crzy guy, the movies are NEVER BETTER CUZ ITS EXTREMLY IMPOSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY SINCE J.K. ROWLING IS SUCH A GENIUS!!!! but i have to say that the movies i think have always been fabulous!

Posted by weasleychick92 Mar 12th 2008

Ugh. Well, I can't say I'm surprised. This is good because a) I like the director and b) Longer! But where are they going to split it? The first one may not even mention the Deathly Hallows! I'd rather have it one long film with an intermission like in The Sound of Music.

Posted by hp_rox_my_sox15 Mar 12th 2008

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!1 WOOOOOOOOOOo th at means 3 more movies and an amusement park!!!!! i'm sooo excited!!!!!!! CANT WAIT FOR MOVIE SIXXX!!!!!

Posted by thesilverunicorn Mar 12th 2008

I think I am happy about this. I would prefer just one 7 hour movie, but I guess that is completely unrealistic.

Posted by crzyguy662 Mar 12th 2008

Actually I only paid 17 for my book. I'm just saying I don't think it's worth it. I wish they would leave it as one movie and have an intermission.

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

Errrmm...siriusnprongs, I am forced to disagree with you. I don't think that just because someone would rather watch the movie in 2 parts makes them less of a Harry Potter fan. I myself am just excited that they won't have to cut out as much from my favorite book of the series. Oh, and raguentnerjr, I agree. I hated how much was cut out from OOTP.

Posted by hp_rox_my_sox15 Mar 12th 2008

i think it doesn't matter how much it costs to go see the movie! as long as they do the book justice and they're doing the split for "creative purposes" then it doesn't matter!!!

Posted by xoHPxo13 Mar 12th 2008

Ok................. THIS TOTALLY STINKS!!!!! I was all excited to have 7 books and 7 movies.............but NOOOOOOO! does this soud right to anybody? 7 books and 8 MOVIES?????? why oh why did they do this? I am freaking out, and wondering if I'm just dreaming!! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO I JUST CANT BELEIVE IT... its 1 movie so it should be 1 book! I mean, they did okay with the 5th movie and that was longer! I really do not have a good feeling about this..................... ................

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

I'm so excited. That's all I can say. It's just two more hours of Harry Potter. And I simply don't see why people are complaining about that!

Posted by bachwiz18 Mar 12th 2008

Good news for everyone! JKR and the producers are happy because it's twice the money for them, and the fans are happy because it's another movie to look forward and another year and a half of extending the Potter mania before it has to be done for good...!

Posted by d0bbyr0cksmys0cks Mar 12th 2008

=| i'm bloody confused about this split. on one hand it's: 1. they'll be able to do the book justice by adding the sub-plots, which they been cutting out of the movie since PoA, imho. (which, btw, ISN'T THE DIRECTOR'S FAULT, it's the SCREEENWRITER'S FAULT. so stop bashing david yates!) 2. JKR's cool with it. 3. more pottermania! but on the other hand: 1. where are they planning to split the movie? 2. how are they gunna start the second one? 3. the wait?! 6 months?! WB! *shakes fist* why do you do this to us?! WHY????!!!! even after typing this out i'm still confused. *sighs* all i know is that THEY. BETTER. DO. THE. BOOK. JUSTICE!!!!!!!

Posted by alastormoody Mar 12th 2008

OMG!!!!!! BETTING MAN ANDREW WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!*freaks out*

Posted by love_padfoot Mar 12th 2008

oh my god fawkes hermione i couldnt agree more, finally i think i found some one who has the same opinions about harry potter*high fives fawkeshermione*! 'ear 'ear! and i have not said this in like an hour so: I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

I agree, heronxobsessed. I'm fine with it - and why is it such a big deal that it's 7 books and 8 movies? I really haven't even been thinking of it as 8 movies...it's just that one of them is split in half. And if Jo aproves of it, I aprove.

Posted by 1oftheTrio Mar 12th 2008

YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESY ESYESYES!!!!!!!!!! This is so awesome. They'd better not cut ANYTHING, since they are deciding to make it into two movies. I'm a little *sniffly* that it doesn't start until 2010. But, ZOMGOSHSQEEHPIN2011???!? Awweeesome. ^_^

Posted by Padfoot777 Mar 12th 2008

I like Yates. THEY ARE A YEAR APART! NOO!

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

Why does everyone care so much just because the stupid numbers don't match?! And, yeah, wanting more Potter makes us less of fans. THAT makes a lot of sense. (rolls eyes)

Posted by nickb Mar 12th 2008

Thank the lord! I think this is good, but I think they made the best descision of when the two movies will be released. A year was to long, a month to short, and opnly a dumb@$$ would release them at the same time. I am then left to worry about another thing. When will Part 1 DVD will be released? Again, I find myself seeing only one option: Part ! DVD MUST be released BEFORE PART 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! I know I and I'm sure others would need to watch Part 1 before 2.

Posted by HPtears101 Mar 12th 2008

OH MY GOD! WE HAVE TO WAIT 6 MONTHS FOR THE END OF THE MOVIE?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Sectumsempra84 Mar 12th 2008

It shouldn't be looked at as 7 books=7 movies or whatever, it should be looked at as ONE STORY. Therefore, the more of the story, i.e. two more movies, the better!

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

love_padfoot - *high fives back* By the way - you looooove what?? :P :)

Posted by honeydukes0209 Mar 12th 2008

I wish it just had an intermission...6 months...argh.

Posted by Jimmy_D Mar 12th 2008

WTF! This is looking more like a cash grab from a far away stand point. I am glad they are doing two films BUT the movies are spaced like a WHOLE HALF A YEAR away from each other!
