Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.Story highlights (Digg this story!):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.
It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:
Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.
"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."
Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

And why Yates again ? I liked OOTP a lot but let someone else direct.
this is good news... but here's a question... where will the movie be split?
six moths is nothing compared to the two years between HBP and DH1. wow. DH1. this is going to take some getting used to.
I like the idea of more film time, but we have to wait SIX MONTHS to see part 2?!?! I have mixed feeling about this one...
I'm really excited about this now, but it's going to be HARD to wait that long for the second half. I'm happy about the release date, though, generally; I'll be a Senior in high school about to graduate when it comes out. That's really weird to think about, actually.
I agree with playwright, this is probably the end of potter as we know it. I can't beleive Yates is directing, its a total travesty. Oh well, i'll keep my fingers crossed that the next 3 films are better then OOTP but i won't hold my breath. I wish they had brought back Alfonso, he was the most creative and original director who made dark, funny movie that was refreshingly different from the others.
I can imagine three things happening for the DVD release. Firstly, they release Part one just before the release of part 2 (in the cinema) this way they get a lot of hype up for the final part. Next, after four/five months they release part two on its own and then realese a combined version of the DVD, so parts one and two. Then after that they'll release the full box set 1-7 with seven as a combined version. I am worried where they will split it though. They could do it after Ron leaves or after they destroy the Horcruxe. Hopefully they should really be able to do the final battle justice.
well i just hate the fact that i have to wait but i guess this is for the best...so they will do 2 loooooong parts so they wont leave to many things out.
Uhh..@splitting But Yates... NO! NO NO NO.
well about time they announced it officially! im very pleaseed with this decision, only downside is the 2-3 year wait!

UHG, not HIM again....
WAAAAAAAA i wanted chris colombus... but the 2 movies is encouraging
NO! That will just ruin the entire thing! You have one movie one month and you have to wait until MAY?????????? It will completely ruin the feeling, it is a complete disappointment to me. Sorry, But you guys really sucked on this decision.
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. I think it will ruin the climax of the story, not heighten it. It's SO far apart. This is just utterly DISGUSTING.
I don't like the idea. it is BAD. David Yates ruined Harry Potter and will continue to do so. 7 books....8 movies? (my friend says...) On the other hand theres another chance to see DAN RADCLIFFE even more! he is totally gorgous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TALK ABOUT A SIX PACK!!!!!
The news that Yates is back kinda dampens the excitement of two movies. I don't think he can pull off what's necessary for the finale of this film.
im excited!!! at first i didn't like the idea but now that its confirmed im kind of happy!! :-D idk if i like david yates directing, but if he does an awesome job with hbp he can have my blessing for DH. haha its just funny how when the last one comes out ill be 21. i wonder if i will still be going to midnight showings. lmao the fandom lives on a lot longer!!!
The only reason that they are doing this is to make more money and now we have to sit through two movies! Hey wait, that's a GOOD thing :)
Well, I was hoping for a different director, but Yates' OOTP grew on me after about 10 viewings and I'm am interested to see what he is going to do with HBP...so, good luck to him! I'm sure the films will be entertaining and well worth the split : )
Two!!!!Is that good or bad????I don't know!!!!! But 6 months apart is too long!!!! And I'll be twenty years old then - ughghghghghg....old!!!!!! !
I believe the majority of Harry Potter fans will disagree to this decision. Everybody is looking forward to see the last movie of the series. The second part being released on May 2011 is outrageous. Its too far from December. Fan will get desperate and perhaps disappointed... I was not surprised to the decision of WB appointing David Yates as Deathly Hallows director. I believe it was a drastic decision. We still havent seen any results on Half Blood Prince movie and Order of the Phoenix did not turned out as expected. The movie wasn't even nomiated for Oscars. -Sorcerer's Stone was nominated for Costume Design, Art Direction and Original Score -Prisoner of Azkaban for Visual Effects and Original Score -Goblet of Fire for Art Direction We can't however dismiss other awards. Fans have been very dissapointed in the changing directors. I am sure most will agree Chris Columbus was the best because he casted the first spell, same to John Williams as composer of the first three movies. The last thing fans want is the film to be slpit in two. I would prefer the movie to be 4 hours long, such as other movies, like, Lord of The Rings and Titanic...Perhaps Warner Bros is making a marketing campaign for Deathly Hallows to be a great hit like THE GODFATHER which was also split in two...Lets see what happens...
i am abslolutly appalled.
I wanted one extra-long movie, but alright, so be it :)
This is REALLY BAD NEWS. I am so upset I am crying right now. "Purely creative reasons"???????? That is the biggest LIE I ever heard in my life!!! How dare they say they can cut nothing out of Deathly Hallows when the trio spend the middle part of the story just camping all over Britain doing nothing else, and when they've cut crucial scenes from the other movies??? Do they really consider us all braindead-stupid and incapable of watching one long film? Haven't they made enough money already that they want more and more and more? I don't want the Potter saga to end, but an eighth movie, unfortunately, does not mean a new story. We will just have two very bad seventh films full of scenes that are not in the book in a desperate attempt to make a bit of sense (probably because the script writer has JUST realised that Snape IS an important character after all... Doh!) It breaks my heart, but I won't be watching them. Sorry.
I'm sorry! but I don't like it. I'm very dissapointed. It's like selling us the 7th book.. Here you go.. oh wait a min.. "rips the book in half"...here you go. Have fun.. you can come and get the end in 6 months.. Weeeeeee!!
artist31593:- I never new this but did u know that Radcliffe is jewish?? it even sounds fun
YYUUUUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! I am so excited. David Yates is my favorite director yet, and I am SO excited. My Harry Potter geekiness will still be cool for a couple few more years!!!
thank god! ahh im soo happy they are spliting it into two because taht way they can fit everything, and everything important in. Otherwise the movie would prbly suck cause there is so much in the movie. ahh im soo pumped now. i can barely wait for movie six as it is. 8 months left!!
Humm, I don't really know wheter this is good or bad. I think it may be nice ;) Three movies, yay! It's good that they didn't take parts away from DH, that would be horrible! I wonder on what part will they cut the movie? The last fight better be AWESOME!
OKay, just a thought. I am glad that they are thinking "creatively" but I am wondering if this is marketing realizing they missed their REAL opportunity with Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix which both should have been two movies and maybe even Half-Blood Prince. But there are Potter fans out there who, even though they enjoyed the last book, like me, found that some elements could have been edited from that story, and a nice tight final film would be better than dragging out the end. I thought the editing choices in both GOF and OOTP were very poor and nearly wiped out the great subelements that give depth and character and enjoyment to the series. I do understand that not everything can be included in a film for a lot of reasons, but a film should capture the essence of the book. I really don't think Yates did that well. Just my opinion, I will probably see them both but refrain from a final judgement til all is said and done.
Pooklebear - you know, it would be killer if they cut the movie like right before harry jumps in the water to go get that sword. ugh i would die.
Shouldve been gone with the wind style!!
The only bad thing is that we will have to wait 2 full years to see another potter film after Half blodd prince.
heyy remi!! are you still here?!?
Come onl!!! Yates was the best director so far! You have to admit that OoTP was the most true to the books of all the movies except maybe the first! I'm STOKED that he's directing the rest of them- at least the fabricated parts of OoTP are true to the book and it was condensed well. I cannot WAIT to see HPB and esp. the DH1 and 2. It's a bright time in HP fandom, that's for sure!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA KERR SUCKS FOR YOU!!!!!!! Phoenixknight: the proper comment would have been "ALL YOU WHO HATE DAVID YATES OR THE TWO PART IDEA SHOULD QUIT BEING HARRY POTTER *MOVIE* FANS" cus yates won, alfonso sucks, war's over, shut up kerr hahahaahahahaha.
OMG!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! nobody will probably even read or see this comment but oh well, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOO! how could they do this?? how could the split it??? DOES THIS NOT REMIND ANYBODY OF HORCRUXES? (or is it horcir? it's horcruxes isn't it? i know i should know, i just sort of forgotish_) DO NOT SPLIT THE SOUL!!!!! DO NOT SPLIT THE SOUL!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! David Yates - eh :~{ :~{
OKAY. THE IDEA SEEMS COOL. BUT, DAVID YATES? NO NO NO. CAN'T THEY JUST CANCEL THE THREE-YET-TO-BE-REALESED MOVIES AND INSTEAD MAKE THREE FAT NOVELS, EACH EXCEEDING A 1000 PAGES. WOULD BE MORE THAN AWESOME.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! YOU AGREE , DON'T YOU?
im excited for the split movies....a) it will probably do the book much more credit (i agree that there is a much slimmer group of subplots that can be deleted for the movie) and b) we get to enjoy it for that much longer (in both hours of movie time and months of anticipation!)
i agree mrsfredw. its like i dont want the whole "harry potter franchize" to end. and once the Part 2 of harry potter 7 comes out, its like, its finally done. ugh i'll be dreading/anticipating the day. ughh idk how to feel. lol
A suggested point to split "Deathly Hallows": Between Chapters 17 and 18. Harry and Hermione are in the Forest of Dean. Ron is gone and spirits are very low. They have been to Godric's Hollow. Harry's wand is broken. This leaves the story at a very low point. Those who have not read the book may not return to see the rest of the story. Next suggested split point: Between Chapters 18 and 19. Still in the Forest of Dean. Harry nearly drowns getting Gryffindor"s sword from a frozen pond. Ron returns and saves Harry and recovers the sword. Horcrux 3 is destroyed. Spirits are considerably higher than they were. There is "A New Hope"(Star Wars IV). Now those non-readers are fired-up to see the outcome in Part II.
OMG! This is the best news in a very long time!!!! I am soo delighted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! I've just finished crying in happiness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! :):):)
Yayy! SO happy about this! I am excited to find out where they split it! =]
I'm glad about it, but WHY COULDN"T THEY HAVE DONE THIS WITH MOVIES 4-6!?
hm..I love it when they say they have to make to movies to make sure they stay 100% true too the book. But to wait so long between each movie?=/
until they realise DH , i'll be 21 years old.....
omg! just, omg. i didn't think they'd actually do it, honestly. it's definitely going to suck having to wait that long between movies, but sweet deal! :D
Thanks WB. Once again, my neighbors think that someone's trying to murder me and had to knock on the door. Even brought a shotgun with them just in case. Excuse me while I go do my happy dance now. :D
any cheesecakians about? my school is boring, i need comesone to talk to.
