Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.

Story highlights (Digg this story!):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.

It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:

Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.

"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."

Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOT!! I'm so happy! finally they try to do justice to an HP book! i totally agree that you just CANNOT remove random subplots from it!

I am happy for the split. Now we won't have to miss anything. :D Only problem: Yates is directing. I don't think he is a bad director but he cut things out of OOTP that I really wanted to see and he didn't put it on the DVD. *cough*snapesworstmemory* cough*

I AM FLOATING ON CLOUD NINE!!!!! yayzyayzyayzyayzYAYZ! while ootp was disapoiningly short Im fine with Yates, but im withholding my judgement until hbp. But TWO MOVIES!!! which means more gringotts, more umbridge and so much more delicous details you cant fit into a three hour movie :)

Posted by namara87 Mar 13th 2008

I really don't like the idea...oh well, more Daniel Radcliffe as Harry...can't argue with that.

Posted by kleigh629 Mar 13th 2008

I'm torn on this. Part of me has no problem extending the Harry Potter mania a little longer, it gives us fans something to continue to look forward to. But at the same time, I don't know if I think splitting it into two films is the answer. There's a lot that can happen in the time between the two movies and things can be left out. Yates made the comment about some things can't be left out of this film, well how about the previous six films. They left out a lot of details and to have the entire DH book put onto film might be confusing to those that only see the movies, but don't read the books. And would it be so terrible to see one LONG film. I mean look at films like Ben Hur, Gone With the Wind, Titantic, The Ten Commandments, Gettysburg. What's so terrible about having a 4+ hour film with a fifteen/twenty minute intermission?? Most HP fans would sit for a long film. I just hope they don't screw it up worse than they have with some of the previous films.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Mar 13th 2008

YAAAAYYYY!!!!!! THree more movies to look forward to!!!! This is GREAT!!!! Oh please let Snape's death scene be perfect.... and The Prince's Tale. Pleasepleaseplease. And for those of you who can't wait six months for the last volume... don't be silly! Remember how fast the years between books has flown by? Six months will be nothing.

Posted by Ruby_321 Mar 13th 2008

oh wow! first chance ive had a chance to check mugglenet in ages and theres massoe news!!! WHOOOOO! This should be two bloody awesome movies...if not there will be millions of Harry Potter fans out to get them! lol!

OMGYAY!!!!!!-- for the 2-parts movie WTFNOOOO!!!--- for David Yates... AGAIN?????? well, at least it's not Mike Newell, or worst... Chris Columbus... *sigh*

Posted by Kaammini Mar 13th 2008

I have to say that I couldn't see it going any other way (especially since others had sort of confirmed it). The big question: Where will they split it? I'm thinking either just before Shell Cottage or just after Gringotts.

Posted by Taylor_the_girl_who_knows_ur_cell_Emmy Mar 13th 2008

I =AM STILL PRETTY HAPPY BOUT THE SPLIT JUST NOT THE FACT THAT I JHAVE TO WAIT SO LONG 4 THE 8TH MOVIE. 8 MOVIES!! YESSSS JUST HOPE DANNY WILL PLAY THEM BOTH. IT WOULDN'T BE THE SAME, LOL

Posted by phoenixknight Mar 13th 2008

Hey guys, it kinda wouldn't make sense to make one whole 6 hour film! I mean how many ppl would waste their time and their butts to sit through all that? THe Box Office would be low, cuz no one would wanna see it more than once, they'd catch it on dvd. But to split it into two parts with one movie not being more than 3 hours is great! for the box office. I mean 10 Commandments and Sound of Music didn't make that much money anyways...

Er.... Partly I'm really pleased because what sane person doesn't want more harry potter. But at the same time... it just doesn't seem right. Seven books, Seven films. That is how it should be.

Posted by horsetrek Mar 13th 2008

OMG why are they doing this.I like the two split part but not them being released 6 months away from eachother. Its ridiculous.

Posted by june_21_2003 Mar 13th 2008

OMG YESSSSS! WoooooHooooo! Thank you sweet Jesus! They should end it on a cliffhanger at the part where they Disapparate from Malfoy Manner or when they are captured in their tent by Death Eaters! Whoo!

Posted by RoseMclane Mar 13th 2008

WOW. I'm happy. A little disappointed that we have to wait so long ( longer then I want to wait anyways ) for the second part. It will be a great movie and much better that its being split. I don't think DVD cost will be a problem...I should have a Job by then and I shovel out whatever it cost to buy it.

Posted by golfwizard2009 Mar 13th 2008

okay i don't mind the split but why is yates still directing?!?!?!?! he screwed himself when he didn't do anything with the locket in the fifth book and somehow he's gonna screw up the sixth. since they are gonna split the movie in two they better include everything.

Posted by insanitymakesacomeback Mar 13th 2008

i'm okay w/ it as long as the movies are good, CAUSE IF THEY RUIN IT IM GOING TO BE SO FRIGGIN PISSED(im allowed to say er type that right, if not sorry)

More time to put in everything. I love this. I just don't want to wait 6 months for the second part. I know I'll be too impatient. =] Eh well, can't wait! XD

Posted by Gotpotter269 Mar 13th 2008

are they joking?? everyone is going to get wayyyyy to old looking, and then if they find a new cast it will be terrible. i've always thought the books a lot better than the movies....but this is just miserable!!!

The other day when I was on I was just sort of addressing the issues people brought up in their comments, but now I'd like to actually give my views. First of all, I'm overjoyed about this. More detail, more accuracy, more fun for the fans. See what I mean? Here's what I think about the fact that they're coming out 6 months apart. BE RATIONAL, PEOPLE. If you want it intermission style, and coming out at the same time, you would get both parts in MAY. Wouldn't you rather have Part I to tide you over? As for everyone hating Yates ... STOP. RIGHT NOW. Basically what I learned last night was that you all hate him for cuts he DID NOT MAKE. He doesn't write the script or decide what gets cut out! So what the heck is it that you people don't like about him that is ACTUALLY his fault? As for the money thing ... it's not for the money. It's to make us happy! And how are we repaying them? Being ungrateful and complaining and dissing them (meaning WB)! I personally couldn't be happier with this decision. And besides, if you think it's not worth paying double the money for this movie, what kind of fan is that? And besides, it IS worth it, because the books are done and the movies are all we have left. Plus, you can't know it's a crappy movie unless you see it. As for nothing coming out in 2009 because of Dan doing another movie ... don't even get me started. It is taking some serious self-control not to curse about that one. But the thing that REALLY makes me happiest about this- jump up and down happy- is that we're going to get a whole new way for Ron and Hermione to get together, because, in the books, it had to do with SPEW, which was cut from the movies. And I am the biggest heron (aka Ron/Hermione shipper) you will ever meet. I feel like there was something else I wanted to say, but I can't remember it. Anyway. BE GRATEFUL FOR EVERYTHING WB IS TRYING TO GIVE US (that we are very ungracefully recieving) and have an awesome day, people. Adios.

Hallelujah!

Posted by grintloverr Mar 13th 2008

NOOOOOOO what the hell am i supposed to do with those 6 months of my life?? I can't wait that long!! ugh i guess i'll just live in the movie theater and wait

Posted by AndrewW Mar 13th 2008

GOF made sense keeping in one movie. Mike Newell did a GREAT job of directing. On the other hand, I feel OotP was not done well and, although not needing to be split in 2, was rushed and poorly put together. So far I don't like David Yates but this could change with the release of HBP. I am extremmely excited to hear the DH will be split because there is no possible way they could put everything in 2 hours. Hopefully they make both movies just over 2 hours! Otherwise there is still no point in the split. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPLIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Posted by snapeluver1777 Mar 13th 2008

THis rocks!!!!!!!!!!!! except the primere dates are to far apart

Posted by starlette804 Mar 13th 2008

I'm soooo excited!! I think it will be great because it will probably keep very similar to the book since they won't have to cut out stuff for time. I am also a little bummed tho because I don't want to have to wait for the second half!!! But yay, at least it will stay the same as the book and have David Yates as the director :) I LOVE HARRY POTTER!!!!

Posted by LadyEvelyn Mar 13th 2008

YAY! I've been waiting for this day. But are they going to have 2 separate premieres and separate soundtracks?

Posted by AnyaMarcos Mar 13th 2008

I wish Newell was doing DHI and DHII. GOF is my favorite of the films, even with all they cut out. OOTP was a drag. I only saw it in the theaters twice.

Posted by phoenixknight Mar 13th 2008

Whoa, you're like the first HP fan to say you liked GOF. I liked it too, unlike the POA fans, but i enjoyed OOTP more, mainly cuz of character devlopment and the battle scenes!

Posted by xLuna_Lovegoodx Mar 13th 2008

After posting on this earlier, I really got to thinking about it and I think Ive changed my mind about Yates. There was alot of stuff he left out of OOTP that I would have like to see (a.k.a- The end scene where Harry was breaking everything in Dumbledore's office). But I'm not really going to decide whether or not I really care if he does DH until I see HBP. If he leaves really important stuff out of it, then he will lose my respect, probably forever. Plus I think that Speilburg could have done awsome on DH if he had been given the chance. Too bad. But I like Yates, I think he did better on OOTP than anyone else did on any of the other movies, so I'm not toally against him directing DH- at least, not yet. HBP will be my deciding point.

Posted by phoenixknight Mar 13th 2008

well said xLuna_Lovegoodx

Bad news, Harry. I've just been to see Professor McGonagall about the Firebolt. She — er — got a bit shirty with me. Told me I'd got my priorities wrong. Seemed to think I cared more about winning the Cup than I do about you staying alive. Just because I told her I didn't care if it threw you off, as long as you caught the Snitch first.
