Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.

Story highlights (Digg this story!):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.

It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:

Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.

"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."

Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

Post #401!! lol. I'm sooo excited that they're going to split the last movie!! I think it was a really smart decision on their part. I mean, think of how disappointed the fans would be when they'd have to cut out so many major parts to fit it into one 2-3 hour film! (and no, there is no practical way they could make a 5 hour long movie just for the sake of cramming it into one long film.) I believe them when they say that their intentions were purely creative, and not monetarily motivated. I mean, who really cares about the money they make anyway? We watch these movies to be entertained, not because we're really all that concerned with the film's financial success.

Posted by strawberrieflavored Mar 14th 2008

PS- I completely agree with heronxobsessed74. Very well put. Especially about the 6 months difference part. Another side note, if you're really so concerned about it being such a horrible, crappy movie, then don't see it. I don't see anybody putting a gun to your head and forcing you to go. And quit griping about Yates. I'm beginning to think that no director will ever be good enough for some fans... If you really think you could do a better job, then by all means feel free to direct your own set of movies. Just don't come complaining to me when you tick half the fans off and finally understand the struggle and hard work the directors face with these films. And about the cuts they make for these films? I mean, what are you expecting, an 11 hour movie, just so they wont leave every last little subplot out?? Come on! That would take like 5 years to film each one, the cast would age drastically just during the filming of one movie, no one could afford to produce a movie that long, and who on earth would sit through a movie that long at one time?? Let's be REASONABLE, folks! Yes, they make cuts from the book. It's NECESSARY. And I'm sure it's not something they do carelessly. It's given a lot of thought and debate as to what is essential to the storyline. Think about it, they're not completely changing the storyline by leaving out a quidditch game or SPEW. And they have to change a few minor things in order for the story to flow with the cuts they have to make. But they're not making a whole different story in the movies. If you have a problem with the cuts they make, that's what the books are for!! They're two separate medias, and they should to be enjoyed as such! That's why they say they are "BASED on the novel by J.K. Rowling", not "Word-for-word exact representation of the novel by J.K. Rowling"! So quit your moaning and bellyaching about such minor things!

Omg, this is so exciting. Although I don't relaly know if I should feel extremely excited or not, haha, its a very emotional time :P Of course it will be absolutely amazing because then obviously we will be able to fit EVERYTHING in it, all parts of the most amazing book into the most amazing movie! It should be great, because honestly i don't think the movie will make much sense at all to those who haven't read the books if absolutely every important fact isn't it in so lets hope that solution will allow that. The only thing that will be dreadful is having like i said to see the most amazing movie, from the most amazing book and then have to stop in the middle and wait about six months. I am going to die waiting!!! I wish they could come out closer together but fitting in the entire story line will make up for it i guess, and on top of that it will keep harry potter around a little longer so when the depressing day comes when the second part is realeased it may be better than if realeased all at once. Gives us a little something more to look forward to.

I don't mind the movie being split in two, if it means that the story will be fleshed out properly (unlike OOTP). But no... not David Yates again! :( Bring back Alfonso Cuaron! He was much better at letting the story flow without that choppy feeling I got from OOTP, and at making you feel the gloom and darkness from the story -- something which will be even more important in the final movie.

Posted by groovygal2k Mar 14th 2008

I HATE THE IDEA OF 2 MOVIES!!!!!!! why do they keep saying that fans are liking the idea! why why why!! i dont like it. and i EXTREMELY hate the idea that there is 6months inbetween the 2. ok fair enough, pirates of the caribbean 2 and 3 were 6months apart, but this is stupid! i dont care if they want money, i mean they make millions without harry potter anyway! lol there is so decent part in deathly hallows where they can split it! and did i mention I HATE THE IDEA! although now its not so much an idea, more the truth! :( i dont like it!!!

Posted by phoenix1946 Mar 14th 2008

Well, yes they do make millions without Harry Potter. They make BILLIONS WITH Harry Potter. I still look for a split around chapter 18. Before 18 is at a very low emotional point. After 18 is at a higher point with Ron's return and news from the rest of the world. After 18 will leave the audience panting for the rest of the story.

Posted by moonwalkinwand Mar 14th 2008

WTF! That really bites, for lack of a better word. 2 MOVIES! Wow, it's great that a lot isn't going to be cut out, but at the same time, the 6 month wait in between the two parts is going to be torture.

Posted by flibbertigibbit Mar 14th 2008

WHOOO! for someone who's been pleading for more screen time since the 3rd movie, this is a very special moment. *throws herself a party*

I am excited bout the split.Yates better come good if he cuts a lot out it is gonna suck.Come good David. This had better be a team effort and David should not be given free reign coz it will just suck.Glad JKR is ok with it tho.Long live JKR and Harry Potter

Posted by darkmysticphoenix21 Mar 14th 2008

Now that I think of it ,where would they cut.My guess ,when Weasleby leaves and Harry and 'mione go to Godric's Hollow and get attacked. Yates can not and should not be allowed to direct 4 -4 movies. That stinks. Bring back Chris or Cuaron for DH2 please WB. I think HBP may be a hour and a half long with all the stuff Yates is cutting its so fudging unfair.

Posted by The_Oddball Mar 14th 2008

They should have started this a long time ago, like around the fouth film. I mean a Harry Potter fan is a Harry Potter fan, we would've all see it the day. I'm glad WB finally came to their senses though, but I'm disappointed for all the lost scenes in GoF, OotP and HBP. This announcement is bitter-sweet for me becuase we will see it all in DH, but I feel that WB took a huge chunk out (GoF, OotP (I mean, come on! Longest book, shortest film... I still don't get it! and HBP)) and placed a huge chunk in (DH). But anyway, YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA!!!!!!!!! Can't wait for the battle!!!!! Can you imagine how detailed it will be!!!! AHHHHHHHH SO COOL!!!!!! I Want May 2011 to come NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! HP ROCKS!!!!

Posted by The_Oddball Mar 14th 2008

Yates better do well becuase I really don't like OotP, I mean, I haven't even watched it completely since I got it the day. I was really hoping for Alfonso, he rocked. Even with this fantastic news.... GOD WB CAN'T YPU GET IT RIGHT???!! Grrrr.............

Posted by i_LOVE_rupert_grint Mar 14th 2008

yay...?

Posted by xfugitivemotelx Mar 14th 2008

=( Why can't they just make a loooong movie. i love the fact that they are cutting anything but it sucks that the release dates for parts one and two are like six months apart. ehh.

Posted by muggleborn23 Mar 14th 2008

WOW!!!!!!!! As long as they dont like sell them at different times and when in the Theatres they give us an intermision but dont just show 1/2 i'm cool with it but of course im just a 12 year old Harry Potter adict and what im "cool" with dosnt exactly make an impression on the filming world.

Posted by Moaning_Myrtle Mar 14th 2008

I'm not sure how to feel about this info! I'm okay with the split, I guess, because they couldn't possibly do a 5 hour movie. This way is better anyway, because we will have more wonderful time between movies to read up about casting and such. = ) David Yates wasn't my favorite director but he'll do a fine job with the next two films. All of the directors have, really. I look forward to seeing HBP for my 14 birthday and DH part I for my 16th birthday. It is truly great growing up during this HP phenomenon! ; ) ~Myrtle~

Posted by stephaniennn Mar 14th 2008

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I'm not so angry about Dh being split, bcuz now they'll be ale to keep in all the important stuff, but I HATE DAVID YATES!!! I think he's being such a movie-hog! Can't we let someone else give it a go? Preferably someone other than Yates?? And what are they going to call the two movies? "Harry Potter and the First Half of Deathly Hallows"? That's soooo stupid!!

Posted by PottyforPotter Mar 14th 2008

I don't believe this. Yates shouldn't have cut out so much in OotP! All those good bts like Weasley is Our King and SPEW and... argh. I really wanted to see Weasley is our King. Darn.. and didn't they say HBP was going to be more of a teenage-romantic-comedy thing? Please, don't spoil HP movie people! the movies are bad enough as it is... I really hope they cast Scrimgeour... PLEASE PLEASE DON'T CUT OUT TOO MUCH! And the Harry potter movies have officially lost its meaning by having 8 films instead of 7... Isn't that the entire reason Jo made it 7 books? This is bittersweet news to me... -Potty p.s. hi Cara and Sarah!

Posted by KalicoKat Mar 15th 2008

Ok has anyone read the comments at the end of the orignal article? Some douche had the nerve to post ideas of ways to cut the plots to make it one movie. The ideas the poster proposes are absolutely ridiculous. Hearing them makes me even happier that this decision was made. I just wonder how they are going to fill in the plot holes they created with cutting so much out of 5 and most likely 6. Flashbacks?

Posted by SiriusBlack2005 Mar 15th 2008

Well, I'm happy with the split. This means more details from the book will be added to the movie. However, let Yates to "direct" again? C'mon... OOTP was the weakest Potter movie ever.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 15th 2008

Complainers about cuts from the fifth movie ... the longest book means the most details, which are EXACTLY what get cut from the movie. It almost makes sense that OOTP was the shortest one.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 15th 2008

(sigh) And upon reading more comments, I have YET ANOTHER REMINDER! Won't mention any names, but DAVID YATES DOES NOT MAKE THE CUTS. After all the people who are reminding all commenters of this, I still saw someone say, "I don't like David Yates because he left out some of the scenes from OOTP that I would have liked to see." It's infuriating! Listen to everyone else, too. They might actually have something interesting to say!

Posted by Zebra Mar 15th 2008

2 movies yes. Yates directing the rest of the series... NOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I hated OOTP.

Posted by warlocksandmuggwumps Mar 15th 2008

omg, how ironic, i didn't even realize i posted right under you pheonixmandc. anyway, i am very disappointed they are doing this but i don't feel like screaming about it on here right now. (again...)

Posted by warlocksandmuggwumps Mar 15th 2008

i don't really hate David Yates directing it or anything because even though they cut out a lot from the fifth movie it wasn't that bad, at least it was a lot better then the fourth movie which kinda pretty much sucked. but i do think that if they were going to split a movie it should have been the fifth one, because that is the longest of the books. i kinda think they really just want to drag this out for as long as possible, i mean they're making more money, aren't they... maybe it will end p being a good thing and we will finally get the kind of movie that the Harry Potter series deserves to get. but i kinda doubt that... anyway, who knows... but i still don't think they should split, i think it was a bad choice. :~{

Posted by Gryffindor_Rawr Mar 15th 2008

OMG

Posted by Gryffindor_Rawr Mar 15th 2008

I am soo totally syked for the split! I dont want to say goodbye to Harry yet. I'm not ready to stop feeling so connected to something that has been a huge part of my life for nine years now. Though I think this is just another way for them to make money, I'm really glad they have decided to split the final movie. They really do need to do it justice, which they havent done since the second movie. I am not so happy about Yates directing, as Ootp was a complete and utter shambles. I hated it, and before Dathly Hallows was released it was by far my favourite book. I cant seem to see why they would have made the longest book the shortest film! If any film needed to be split, I personally think it should have been Gof because it had so much action. I think they should put the split just after Harry and Hermione disapparete from Godrics Hollow into the darkness. It should end with them twisting in the air into the darkness and a howl heard from Voldemort as everything goes dark. But I think the whole Malfoy Manor idea is good as well. I'm not too fussed, just super exctied for the split!

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 15th 2008

Please, people, BELIEVE them when they say it's not about the money ... they're doing this to make us happy and extend the magic (no pun intended)! Sadly, no one seems to be recieving it the way they expected. Half of you seem incredibly mad about two more hours of Harry Potter ... which I don't understand, but okay. Whatever. Anyway. This leaves us more than three whole years to say goodbye to Harry's world! And, of course, the reminder I put and the end of every post on this comment forum and which people apparently never read: DAVID YATES DOESN'T MAKE THE CUTS. Don't formulate your opinion of him based on the cuts, be it good or bad.

Posted by hermyweasley105150 Mar 15th 2008

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO They cant its not fair one comes out in November 2010 the other in may 2011 there to far apart its not fair they cant we will forget what happens in the first by the time the second one comes out

GR88888888888888888888888 888888888!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! omg i love this!!! itll be great imma see each part a billion times and immma own each part too!!!!!!!

Posted by hermyweasley105150 Mar 16th 2008

Thank you Slytherin15 finally someone understands the thing about this is if they split it in half they will have to leave it off on a cliff hanger. This is a make it or brake it time if they keep it together i think people will like it better. They should make it a 5 hour or more movie like titanic i mean their filming it together they should keep it together. People know harry potter is a long book the other movies have been long they should be expecting it to be long. The only way they can do it is to make it perfect theres no margen for mistakes its the last book and movie(s) and if it is a plop then the harry potter series will be remembered as a plop because this is the most important book and movie(s). I hope for harry potter 6 they put the "I love you Hermione" part that Ron said in the movie. They better put the kiss between Ron and Hermione, and the epilogue in the 7 movie or im not going to watch it cause those are the best parts and without it it would ruin the movie. I think i can live with it being split but if its not good look out cause it wont be pretty.

Posted by phoenixknight Mar 16th 2008

AIN'T THAT INTERESTING? IT'S BEEN 10 YEARS OF THE HP BOOKS (1997-2007) AND NOW IT'LL BE 10 YEARS OF THE HP MOVIES (2001-2011) THAT'S COOL! And i agree with u heronxobsessed74, these hp fans are so FICKLE! At first, they wanted a long-ass harry potter movie, now WB is doing them a FAVOR and they throw it back at their face. How UNGRATEFUL!

Posted by hermyweasley105150 Mar 16th 2008

I dont want david yates to direct the deathly hallows the five movie was butchered to death they left out every thing and it was my least favorite i loved the third one. I mean they almost had all the stuff in there but the fifth one was bad. I mean they left out Quidditch QUIDDITCH RRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOCCCCCCC CCKKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSSS!!! !!!!! and Hermione kissing Ron on the cheek were was that i mean the best part of the movie they took out all the best parts of the movie if any book should have been split it should have been book five cause its the longest. I think they should have got Alfonso Cuaron to direct book seven cause he did the best job ever on movie three. You can see the relationships between the characters and he really brought out the plot and all the details I watch that movie every day. In book five there was a lot of chemestry between the characters but in the movie they cut it out and they cut out most of the details and the important parts if i was'nt such a huge harry potter fan i would have gotten the movie so i think if they got a new directer the movies would be alot better. But I have a det to harry so im going to welcome the next three movies with open arms.

Posted by phoenixknight Mar 16th 2008

well you're in luck hermyweasley105150! Yates is going to include Quidditch in the next one HBP. so that should make u happy...

Posted by Susan14 Mar 17th 2008

David Yates didn't direct GoF, Mike Newell did. Don't blame him for the lack of SPEW.

Posted by hermyweasley105150 Mar 17th 2008

Im just comming around I will try to welcome the film with open arms but I took a poll at school and 23 out of 150 students say it should not be split they should make it long like gone with the wind
