Steve Kloves talks Deathly Hallows split
Steve Kloves talks Deathly Hallows split Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves today sent an email to the Baltimore Sun, shedding light on his thoughts of the Deathly Hallows split announced yesterday:

"Years ago," he writes, "we briefly — and seriously — considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited — almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I’d finished — that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn’t take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I’m sure some will think we’re crazy.

I guess I like the idea... but I heard that they will release part 1 and part 2 of the flim 6 months apart!!!!!

Posted by performingmonkey Mar 13th 2008

This is gonna be just like Kill Bill which was one big 4 hour movie split into two volumes. There is now NO excuse for them to treat the story badly! Now the Ministry sequence will definitely be in. It surely would have been cut completely if it was just a normal movie, Kreacher would have just had the locket, Umbridge wouldn't have featured. Now they can do things like a Regulus flashback, shots of Voldemort's travels that Harry has visions of. They can get the actors who played James and Lily in Ootp (even though we never saw her!!) and recreate the Godric's Hollow attack. They can make the end battle of Hogwarts HUGE.

Posted by mik1of3 Mar 13th 2008

Hooray! Now we'll get to see ALL the characters, and some new ones, in two big, long movies!! BUT..I would have much preferred it be one long movie, with an intermission as sporadically discussed on the podcasts. It would have been the proper sendoff for the movies, I think. I don't think anyone, not even those who have seen only the movies and never read the books, would have let that deter them. Those who were worried about the younger movie watchers? I really, really, don't think Deathly Hallows will be for kids. If done true to the book, then I think it very likely to get at LEAST a PG13 rating, if not a R. It's just too violent and bloody. (I'm saying that as a 42 year old mother, not as a twentysomething adult.) Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to BOTH movies.

Posted by SerenaWronski Mar 13th 2008

In a way, yes... It will be like on big movie. But the structure of it will be like the book. It will have two definate arcs. There are basically 6 acts to the book and a good movie has 3 acts. act 1- Harry is saved from home, they go to the wedding then ACT 2 begins when the tri disapparates and start ont heir own adventure of figuring out how to find the horcruxes. They they get to their ultimate low point- ron's gone, harry's wand is broken, they don't have any leads and they almost just died. ACT 3 would be when Ron returns, after Harry and Hermione's ultimate low. Then we build to a climax with the issue of the locket and the sword- ron destroys the locket, the audience comes dowm from the climax and another climax begins to build as the trio is captured. Act 4- (aka, beginning of movie 2) trio is in captivity, they find out where the next horcrux is essentially and escape. THey go to Bill's and ACT 5 begins when Harry decides to strike a deal with the Goblin and they go to Gringotts. They eventually destroy another Horcrux, they go to Hogwarts, find the one there, dispose... the battle is going on and ACT 6 begins at Harry's lowest point when he realizes he must die. Then we build to the ultimate climax of ALL 8 movies and Voldemort is defeated and the audience is slowly eased down from that high to the epilogue. THe end. I think it's perfect for 2 movies. There is a definate and very nice story arc for each movie. It really won't be like they chopped 1 movie in half... each movie will have its proper arc and build along with climax, let down, low point and mid point action. It's perfect for two movies.

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Mar 13th 2008

mil1of3- if its rated R I woulnt get to see it!! Ill be 15! And I know for sure that my mother isn't gonna let me go!! *growls* When I was little and I went to some library or something they said that books can be more violent then movies some times cause your immagination gets carried away with its self sometimes. Maybe this will apply to DH.

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 13th 2008

Now, if only they'll announce that they're bringing John Williams back for the 7th film....PLEASE...

Posted by rob1007 Mar 13th 2008

mik1of3! im 11! i wont be able 2 see it! ill only be 14 when it comes out! im not scared of it!

Posted by Godric_83 Mar 13th 2008

yay top 20. can't wait for dh to come out. i like the split i think we will benefit from it.

Posted by MUHAHAHA Mar 13th 2008

most of us will be of age when it comes out, at least i will be 19 & 20...

Posted by kreacher888 Mar 13th 2008

dear mr kloves. i respect you decision for making 2 movies. and i also appriate, as im sure everyone who loves harry potter does, the fact that you and "the group" are dedicated to making great films. but there are a few downfalls in your plan. by making the movie premeres 6 months apart, that is half a year, is a poor move. if both movies are to be shot simulainiusly then i dont understand why they cant be released together with an intermission or even a day inbetween. it would be tasteful for you and the rest of "the group" to explain your reasoning further and reconsiders the release dates of your masterpeices.

Posted by Shirley_hpf Mar 13th 2008

It

Posted by angelina_johnson92 Mar 13th 2008

I hate Yates, but Kloves does a great job condensing the book into the film.

Posted by cuppajoe Mar 13th 2008

People need to give David Yates a break. It's a daunting task adapting books to the big screen, and people need to see them for what they are: CONDENSED versions. He's the best HP director since Alfonso. Atleast visually he is similar. You can't perfectly adapt a novel to a film.

Posted by Glitterfrost Mar 13th 2008

I'll be 17/18 when it arrives, depending on when in November it's released. The six month wait in between will be torture, but it'll all be worth it... :D

Posted by Shirley_hpf Mar 13th 2008

This site hates me. =( Here I am, typing a comment, and when I post it there is only one word. =.=" *second try* It's really funny that almost everyone here seems to like the fact that they are splitting the film. I am a moderator on the Dutch Harry Potter Forum, and a lot of people there are not zo happy about it. ^^" As for me, I think I am in the middle. I realy don't know what to think right now, don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing. I'll just wait and see, I can't really say anyting about it until I have seen both films.

Posted by purplgirl123 Mar 13th 2008

GO BALTIMORE!

Posted by hpninjaskills Mar 13th 2008

I hate this guy. :[ He puts too much of Hermione in and not enough Ron! GRR.

Posted by slugclubgirl77 Mar 13th 2008

omg. could you imagine the 4th movie as split into two films?!? that would prob. just confuse evryone. i cannot wait until these movies are realeased [=

Posted by warlocksandmuggwumps Mar 13th 2008

i would like it if they put a lot from the books in the films, yes, but i do not think that splitting it was the wisest of choices. i personally thinks it sucks... anyway, do you think they will include the, uh, Dobby scene in the movie? (and yes, i was trying there not to ruin it for peoples... just in case...) i doubt it. and i doubt about Fleur and Bill's wedding to... :~{ bill is, and there is no other word for it, cool. anyway, i don't like that they are splitting it. :~{ have they learned nothing from horcruxes? there are somethings you are not supposed to split! somethings are just supposed to stay whole!!! yeah... i didn't like the 4th movie. it made me rather mad. (they cut out so much stuff...) and i do realize you can't keep everything that was in a book in a movie, but i mean, really... they could have done better then that... seriously...

Posted by CROOKSHANKS99 Mar 13th 2008

i couldnt think of the 4th movie split

Posted by rooon Mar 13th 2008

Thanks!!! : )

Posted by july21tillhp7 Mar 13th 2008

lol thats coulda been cool if the 4th was split

Posted by K_nighty_K_night Mar 13th 2008

I must say i'm debating with myself whether this is a good idea. On the one hand, I do agree that a book as epic as the DH cannot be defined with one condensed movie (not to mention if they do just a really long movie, how long will my bladder hold...). On the other hand, the OCD part of me says, "NO NO NO! Seven years, seven books...SEVEN MOVIES!" It does make me wonder though where they would cut the movie into two parts. I would think the battle at Malfoy manor would be a good "ending" for the first part.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 13th 2008

Yes, some DO think he's crazy ... but I'm not one of them. And thank you, "OCD" person, for FINALLY explaining why on Earth people care if the number of books doesn't match up with the numbers of movies ... I completely sympathize, if THAT'S why you're all so bothered.

Posted by seventhsoul Mar 13th 2008

yeah, it's kind of crazy but I guess it's good, there's no way they would have been able to fit in all the wacko stuff that happens in that book! although I shall not spoil -- there's a lot of stuff that needs to be fully explained, definitely

Posted by Azalea Mar 13th 2008

I am happy because I know now that The Prince's Tale will be shown in its entirety and be done justice.

Posted by KaitlinM Mar 13th 2008

remi, i wasnt going to say anything, but then i saw from a later post that ur only 11 or 12 --- its prob not the best idea to post ur email on an open forum like this, there r lots of creepers out there. it was a nice idea, but now absolutely anyone can send you anything

Posted by ajwz24 Mar 13th 2008

The producers are "thinking about the fans", huh... well, since they are thinking about us, how about when we go see part 1, that ticket is good for a seat to see part 2.... I think this is bad and its just all of them trying to squeeze as much money out of us fans, as they can. The 2 part theory is great... but why now? GoF should have been 2 films, OotP should have been 2 films... this is just about the money. I am not happy.

Posted by reconrider Mar 13th 2008

the day i saw GOF, i let it be known to everyone around me that it would have been WAY better if they had split it in two.... i felt the same about OOTP.... in fact, any book after 3 should be split into two parts... anything less is just way too much in one movie.... too many things were cut out.... big parts of the story were cut out and are now nearly impossible to put into the next movies... such as the weasly wizard wheezes shop, it was started using Harry's winnings from the triwizard tournament... nowhere in GOF or OOTP did they discuss that... I'm almost going to guarantee that the joke shop wont be in the 6th movie,.... and if it is, it will be explained away in some ridiculous way, or just ignored all together....

Posted by luckyz21 Mar 13th 2008

I like the idea of splitting the series into three more films (Half Blood, and the finale split), but I don't think Yates is the right choice to have directed the majority of the films. He gets four of eight, that's all this guy needs- a bigger ego. Now he can brush off Coloumbus, Cuaron, and Newell. He "directed the Harry Potter films." He already was cutting so much out in the movies. Ugh! Just a rushed decision by Warner Bros to make quick cash by keeping Yates. At least they could have waited to see if the sixth movie was good. Glad for final threee films, but not director. I think DH Part 1 should end with the christmas graveyard scene at Godric's Hollow.

Posted by wickedwitch16 Mar 13th 2008

mhmhmhmhmmm the person with the arc thing - thats a really good idea. and youve got the arcs in just the right places, too! good thinking skills=) thankfully im already 17 and dont have to worry if theyre rated R. that would make me pretty happy, though!

Posted by KaitlinM Mar 13th 2008

wow, i only skimmed that post cuase it was kinda long, but after someone else mentioned the arc post, i looked it over and it made lots of sense! that would be a wonderful way to split up the movies. i especially like ending with their capture ---cliffhanger!! (except of course we all know what happens--in that scene and in the book---Harry lives!! yeah!!) however, this is also a obviously a move by the studio to get as much money from fan audiences in their last shot as possible.

Posted by alexxx Mar 13th 2008

dude im fence sitting (in the middle, my history teacher said it today :]) about this whole thing. and i completely hate how they leave out so much i the movies, like S.P.E.W.? like where is that at! they leave out so much! maybe with the whole 2 parts thing they wont leave out as much, but if they do ima be so mad. theyre making this huge deal out of the split movie and if its disappointing, im probably gonna have to kick someone. thats the last harry potter movie, and thats it. there is no more new harry potter anything. they better work out how theyre gonna make it! and make it gooooood :D and the whole 6 months in between thing! whatta load of shenanigans! they need to have the same dates out, cause ima be at the theatre 3 hours early waiting and ima see one right after the other! as im sure all you lovely harry potter fans will :] iloveyouguys

Posted by halfbloodprincess96 Mar 13th 2008

ggrrrrr.. lucky already seventeens. i just asked my dad if he would let me see it if it was rated r and he said he would have to go see it first *just to make sure harry and hermione don't do anything* or something like that. he was distracted on the phone at the time. but still, lucky already seventeens, im eleven and my dad still thinks im like five or something. i saw chucky when i was six and that wasn't scary to me. i laughed through alot of it. he MADE me watch and r rated movie with him a couple of months ago and that one was one i DEFINITELY did not need to see (city of angels) i mean, it was a good movie, but it got a little nasty in some parts. blech. it was nasty. well, gotta go . bye peopleos. ---- Samantha

Posted by xLuna_Lovegoodx Mar 13th 2008

I think the fourth movie could have been awsome split in two. In my opionion, GoF was good, but it could have been better had they not had to leave some of the stuff out. And even though it will be bummer to have to wait for both DH movies, I think its a good idea, since unlike the other movies, there isn't really anything you can just leave out. You have to cover ever Horcrux, and almost every detail (a.k.a- Harry's vision's about Voldemort looking for the Elder Wand) is important to the effect of the story. So even though it will be super hard to wait, I'm actually kind of glad that they decided to split it. -xLuna_Lovegoodx-

Posted by lola_lola Mar 13th 2008

Yaaaaay, finally, they shoud've done this to GoF and OOtP, that way they could've included more from the books and not cut so much out... I'm happy, although the movies will never be able to do justice to the books.

Posted by LGirl_89 Mar 13th 2008

yep its great but why wait another year? why not show it the same year? but like 3 months later? but still good decision it would have been awful if they left all that stuff out.

Posted by trueligth Mar 13th 2008

Good!! I know its to much work and the actors and staff need a break I only hope the last movie came as soon as posible. Because to wait longer it is not "natural".

Posted by wtfomghaxx0rz Mar 13th 2008

Lol, that would've been obnoxiously embarassing if GOF was split in two. It would've been horrible. Adding 2 hours to an already weak plot? Not only would it be long and a good 1 1/2 hours of it completely unnecessary, it would've been boring and dragged on forever like LotR. I see nothing in book 4's plot that would even give them the thought to split it in 2. Deathly Hallows is a good idea though! And the 6 month difference is extremely logical and I'd rather have that than an intermission. It'd be nice the the DVDs will be sold as one, though, so there's still 7 DVDs. Maybe I'll wait 6 months after DVD7.i is released and see if they'll sell DVD7.i and DVD7.ii together in a special DVD sale.
