Dame Maggie Smith battling cancer
Dame Maggie Smith battling cancer The Telegraph reported today that Dame Maggie Smith (Prof. McGonagall) is fighting a private battle with breast cancer. "She is dealing with it in her typically brave and understated way," says a friend of hers. "She has had a tumour removed and subsequently completed a course of chemotherapy. This was precautionary and the prognosis looks good. The last thing she wants to do is to make a fuss about it."

The article continues, stating that "the 73-year-old Oscar winner insisted on going ahead with filming her role as Minerva McGonagall in the latest installment of the Harry Potter series last month even as she was undergoing radiation therapy."

Our hearts go out to Maggie and her family. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Oh man! darn Maggie...my uncle passed away from cancer...it's not pretty, but at least her prognosis looks good. Doubt she reads to, but best wishes to her and her family...I can't wait to see her in the seventh movie ---"Charge!" She does McG justice.

noo! maggie is so wonderful, that's terrible! but it will most likely get better..right? breast cancer is very treatable; I've had family members get it 4 times, but everyone's still here! wish you a 'get well soon'!!

Oh My Gosh! That sucks! I am so sorry for her, and I wish that she gets better ASAP. This isn't just because I want her to act more, but she is a real person. Good Luck with getting better!

We will all be sending good thoughts and energy her way! What a great actress, not only for her work in the Harry Potter series, but for all of her work. She has always been one of my favorites.

Posted by coolmama Mar 18th 2008

She was not named a 'Dame' because she wilts under pressure. You go, Maggie! She is a magnificant actress in whatever role she has approached and this real life demon will suffer the same fate as the bogart in the cupboard. I totally understand her desire to remain private. I just hope she knows we appreciate her past, present and future courage. God bless her.

Posted by honeydukes0209 Mar 18th 2008

A TRUE Gryffindor...I know the whole fandom will be sending out their best wishes to her! I really hope she gets well soon!

Posted by phoenixknight Mar 18th 2008

She's a very determined person, God bless her and i wish her a speedy recovery. It wouldn't be the same with a different McGonagall for the final 2 Potters. Especially that she doesn't do much in DH. I know she'll be ok. EXCUSE ME GUYS, but what illness did Richard Harris (the original Dumbledore) have when he was filming the 2nd (and his last) Potter movie? I know it was a kind of cancer too, not breast cancer of course... can anyone please tell me? i'd appreciate that.

Wow! She's so brave! To go on taping, without even telling the public what she was going through!!! Maybe thats why her voice seemed kind of odd during that courtyard seen in OOTP with Trealawney! Hmmmm...... Get better soon Maggie!!!! You're my favorite!
