Full coverage: JKR on Richard & Judy
Full coverage: JKR on Richard & Judy JK Rowling's live interview on the UK afternoon talk show Richard & Judy has just concluded. Although the presenters lacked any in-depth knowledge of the series, if you're anything like me, you'll love Jo even more after watching it.

You can find full coverage of the interview below:

Video: here, thanks to Nick.

Transcript: here.

Screencaps: here, thanks to Natalie.
Here are some of the key points mentioned:

- She is well into writing Book 7 now.

- Although she still has the final chapter of Book 7 stored away in a safe, it has been altered slightly: Two more people have kicked the can while another has gotten a reprieve.

- Jo originally wrote this chapter in 1990. By doing so, she says some people have found her to be arrogant as she didn't have a publisher at the time.

- It was suggested to her that she would have good reason to kill Harry off in Book 7 so that no one could write sequels to the book when she's finished.

- She concedes having "boxed herself in" by writing certain minor plot details in earlier books, which now means she has to spend a great deal of time explaining or tying up.

- For the first three books, she says she was in denial about her success and fame "like a rabbit caught in headlights." Although she found them "cool," she says it was also peculiar to see casual references to Harry Potter in the press.

- Her daughter Jessica has dealt magnificently with the effects her mother's fame has had on her, such as kids at school pestering her for the title of upcoming books.

- Richard suggested dating was tricky because some people might only show an interest in her because of her wealth, but she said it was being a single mother that made it hard.

- If she saw a Boggart, she would see what Mrs. Weasley saw in Book 5: her children deceased.

TBH I liked the interview, and with the Queens Party as well this week we have had a lot from her which is kool. I did expect to hear that main chars kick the bucket, I am expecting it to be Ron and Hermione. Leave HP so totally alone that he has nothing to loose, that would make a truely awesome fight to the death between V and H. I think that she will sell some of the rights to HP so others can make follow on stories, like SW. Truely great stories always manage to stay on the shelves in some way.

Posted by HermioneFAN Jun 27th 2006

Last night I saw that she announced two people wold die at the least on the news.

Posted by crazyperson Jun 27th 2006

Oh GREAT. Now we have to listen to a whole year's worth of people speculating, speculating, speculating about who the two casualties are going to be. Thanks, Jo. Seriously, these bits and pieces of vague information are going to do us all in before the book gets published. We'll all be dead of suspense, and no one will be left to buy the books! LOL!

Posted by moonaperuna Jun 27th 2006

I honestly don't care who dies, gets married or has a pregnancy abortion during Book 7. The entire darn series, Snape has been my ultimate favorite character, and the only thing I care about is that I am really, really, REALLY hoping he is the one who gets the reprieve. I suppose all of us devoted fans know the theory that Dumbledore was severely weakened and was begging to be killed. I know logically that banking all of my hope on that theory (which is just a tad far-fetched, yet still possible) isn't a good idea, but I am IN LOVE with Snape and so very much want for him to be an honourable man. I was devastated when he killed Dumbledore. If Jo ruins Severus Snape for me, I think I shall stay in bed for an entire week during the summer after reading the book, and just stare up at the ceiling in despair.

Harry cant die! *cries* *watches interview intently*

Posted by broadwayybabe Jun 27th 2006

"Two died that I didn't intend to die" does that mean theres 3 now?? NO!!!!! (but yay for jo because shes my hero lol)

Posted by FirelightSpirit Jun 27th 2006

Hi guys, I think it's best to bear in mind everything Jo has said in the past about the Prophecy, you know, all that stuff about 'neither can live while the other survives'. She's said that she and Madam Trelawney worded that very carefully and I think it indicates that one of them WILL survive. We also know that it's definitely going to be Harry who squares up to Voldemort so one of them is going to die. I don't think it will be Harry. Can't explain why, I just think there's too much to keep him alive, like his friends etc. As for who else could die, there's any amount of choice; Snape is a distinct possibility, though he could be the one who got the reprieve, Draco, Lucius, Bellatrix, Neville, one of the Weasleys, Mad Eye. Basically it could be anybody. I think more than two characters die anyway, I think she just meant two MORE die on top of those who already have. Don't forget too that she didn't SAY that it was a reprieve from death, it could be a reprieve from something else. I also think we're going to see someone get the Dementor's Kiss in this book too. Again, don't know why, but I'm just rambling here!

Posted by zachattack Jun 27th 2006

yes!! Harry Potter was on the news this morning!!!! woot!!!! lol and they said that the book might come out next year......????????

Posted by severin Jun 27th 2006

I knew it! Snape's going to die! And the other death will be Voldemort. The character who gets the 'reprieve' is Harry. Snape is the one who has orchestrated everything, intending to do away with anyone around him who might interfere with his ultimate goal - to be the greatest wizard of them all. And he will almost succeed, if not for Harry's magical luck. I think JK originally intended for Snape to prevail, over Harry & Voldemort's deaths. But because the series has taken on such popularity, especially for the boy wizard, she has second thoughts about killing Harry off - thus the reprieve. -submitted by Severus

Posted by kimyswirls Jun 27th 2006

She'll be killing off two characters... I felt cold after knowing this. The suspense is killing me... I hope she won't kill Harry. I don't know how everyone will take it. Maybe if she does kill him, the public will force her to bring Harry miraculously back to life just like Sherlock Holmes... Oh, I can't wait any longer!

Posted by HermioneFAN Jun 27th 2006

As sad as it is Harry will die. JKR has been pointing to it for ages now.

Posted by Peskipiksi_Pesternomi Jun 27th 2006

Yay! J K rowling is amazing and yet so down to earth! Can't w8 for book 7, by the sounds of it its gonna be bigger and better and darker! Woohoo!

Posted by Potterfanatic Jun 27th 2006

u ppl are talking about who she brought back to life i think by this she means like someone she was PLANNING to kill not someone already dead !! so sorry but i really dont think its dumbledore or sirus as much as i would like it to be !

Posted by rnbwgrl Jun 27th 2006

jkr said in an interview ages ago that she wouldnt kill harry ron or hermione. i still don't think she would kill them off. I also think its more likely for the "goodies" to be killed off than the "baddies" (apart from voldemort) because so far none of the order of the phoenix (that we've seen) have used the killing curse on any death eater. theyve just captured them and sent them off to azkaban. but the death eaters kill whoever they can. i don't expect anybody from the order will start killing anytime soon even if they do want revenge.

Posted by Lynn Jun 27th 2006

I love Jo',she is so amazing! Though the kids on the show annoyed me=( They should've chosen older fans who had actually read all the books, and could ask some new and interesting questions.Instead of dull, boring ones,we all heard before!!

Posted by Mrs_Spartz Jun 27th 2006

She is possibly my (excuse the English, but ti's the only way I can express myself) my mostest favoritest person in the world.

Posted by marsisbrighttonight Jun 27th 2006

as much as i want them to, dumbledore and sirius arent going to come back alive/be still alive. jo made it pretty clear that dumbledore was dead from the white tomb, funeral, portrait, and fawkes song. also im pretty sure jo means that someone who she was GOING to kill actually isnt going to die, not that theyre going to come back alive. im like 99% sure harry wont die because it would kinda defeat the purpose of the story, wouldnt it? he does all of that stuff and sacrifices a lot, destroys voldy and does a bunch of good stuff, and then he ends up dying as a consequence. that kind of says theres no point in doing good to the world because in the end youll die...i really dont want hermione or ron to die, because i would be soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo(a million more o's) sad! if they both died then became ghosts and had ghost children then i would be ok with that! ;) and ginny cant die either! she has to marry harry and have children with him!!! sadly i think in the end all the marauders will be dead, including LUPIN! nooooooooooooooo. Posted by broadwayybabe 2 hours ago "Two died that I didn't intend to die" does that mean theres 3 now?? NO!!!!! (but yay for jo because shes my hero lol) no, i think more than 3 are going to die.

Posted by hprocks Jun 27th 2006

The interview was excellent! R&J weren't totally clueless about HP, since Judy said she wants Harry to marry Ginny and Ron to marry Hermione. I thought the kids asked good questions, even though nobody bothered to ask when Book 7 is coming out. I wonder which two characters are going to die?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I hope it's Snape, but JKR seemed upset when she killed these two people. I don't think she would be too upset about killing Snape! My favorite question- Q-How did you think of all the rules for Quidditch A-I'm not sure, actually...they all came to me in about half an hour. I think i saw a Bludger flying at my ex-boyfriend's head!

Posted by rmz890 Jun 27th 2006

Guys, reprieve isn't bringing back from the dead. According to www.m-w.com: 1 : to delay the punishment of (as a condemned prisoner) 2 : to give relief or deliverance to for a time Maybe Wormtail? Draco?

Posted by theREALginny88 Jun 27th 2006

that was a fairly great interview, I just wish their had been better questions. I just love Jo. All I hope for is a happy ending and that would be for harry, ginny, hermione, and ron to LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate it when people want Haryy to die. Good must triumph over evil. I also think it would be cool if the trio ended the series together, just the way they started it!

Posted by e_e_Black Jun 27th 2006

OK, here's a few observations post-interview. 1. She never said Harry would die, but she understands killing off a main character. Like killing Scarlet at the end of Gone with the Wind so no one would write that horrible sequel. 2. While two new ones will die and one gets a reprieve, that doesn't mean ONLY two will die. Just there are two NEW bodies and one person who would have been one isn't one. 3. She only kills major characters. So first you have to decide who qualifies as major. The trio? Yes. Hagrid? Yes. McGonagall, Snape, Lupin, Moody? Yes. Malfoy (father and son)? Yes. Dobbie? Yes. Bill and Charlie? Maybe. Mr. or Mrs. Weasley? Yes. Aunt Petunia? Yes. Fleur and Viktor? Probably not. More that I am not even thinking of like Tonks and Luna? Yes. See, the list of possible MAJOR characters to die is big. Oh, and she is talking about people she had and hadn't planned on killing whose statu changes. So Voldemort dying is outside of this minus-2, plus-1 equation. So we're looking at least at Voldie (he hates it when I call him that) plus two new MAJOR charaters dying. 4. JKR has hinted previously that neither Ron nor Neville will die (assuming Neville becomes the teacher). 5. Will Harry die? I don't think so. In fact, I think the trio and Ginny are safe. Why is Harry safe? JKR is a fabulous writer, but I think she understands that her fans would not invest seven books and countless years of their lives to watch him die. Besides (and this is the reason I think Ron, Ginny and Hermoine are safe) no one will go to the movie to watch any four of them die. I mean don't even make the seventh movie. 6. So, who dies? Buy the book next year. I mean I have my suspicions. In addition to Voldie, you can pick two of the following: Snape, Draco, Lucious, Hagrid and Mr. Weasley. Personally I think Draco is the one with the reprieve. 7. We may never know who DIDN'T get the axe. After all, in the middle of a bloodbath, the one among many who did not die isn't easy to spot....

Posted by r4v3ncl4w Jun 27th 2006

FirelightSpirit, I agree--the prophecy seems to suggest one can and probably will survive. I doesn't mean both can't die, but I don't see why Harry has to. Too much is invested in his character--and remember the Auror thing? It's been set up since OotP. I think he has to become an Auror. So, for deaths, look at the pattern: Cedric, Sirius, and Dumbledore. Hmm ... does Cedric count? I think we're looking at a mentor, like Hagrid. I reeeeally do not want Hermione to die, but of the trio, she seems most likely--she keeps on imparting all that knowledge. Other than that, I'm looking at Snape or one of the Weasleys--perhaps Arthur or Bill or a twin. Not sure about Ginny.

Posted by e_e_Black Jun 27th 2006

Oh, and please don't let either of the twins die. Fred and George are my favorite non-trio characters. I laugh every time they are around. To me that would be more sad than Hagrid dying.

Posted by Harrys_gurl Jun 27th 2006

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DON'T WANT HARRY TO DIE! IF HE DOES, I'LL BE DEPRESSED FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by r4v3ncl4w Jun 27th 2006

I haven't watched this interview yet, but I truly loved how she wasn't taking the crap Katie Couric was trying to pass off as questions in her interview last year about HBP.

Posted by CrazyInferi Jun 27th 2006

cool, i just saw pretty much the same thing in the paper, but it didnt say all of that. i think that if harry died it would be the ultimate plot twist, and i personally would not hate her. i also think that many more than two ppl will die, but its two of the main chharacters. i think one will be snape, and the other either harry or someone else. so ya...................

Posted by MaybieCrazie147 Jun 27th 2006

did anyone beside me see the article in the chicago tribune? it made me mad that that was all we got out of another interview and sad that more people are gonna die. any guesses?

Posted by halleedwards Jun 27th 2006

more deaths...interesting. they had this thing on the Today show that kind of summarized the interview, but they were playing up the whole HARRY"S GONNA DIE!!! thing. Like we haven't speculated about that before. This may sound weird, but JKR totally looks like Phoebe on Friends. Not in a bad way or anything, but still. It's cool.

Posted by Harrys_gurl Jun 27th 2006

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HARRY CAN'T DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WAS DEPRESSED ENOUGH WHEN THAT CETAIN PERSON IN BOOK SIX DIED! (didn't want 2 spoil it 4 those who didn't read it) BUT SERIOUSLY, I DON'T THINK I COULD TAKE IT, I'D HAVE TO GET THERAPY OR SOMETHING!!!!!!!

Posted by harryetmoi Jun 27th 2006

I think it was really annoying the way R&J never shut up! don't they realise that it is JKR we want to listen to, not them! we can hear them every week if we really wanted to! rant over - It was good!

Posted by ginnyx3harry Jun 27th 2006

omggg she better not kill off harry or a swear im burning all my books

Posted by amy4dan1327 Jun 27th 2006

J.K. Rowling is totally awesome!!! She was great on Richard and Judy!!! She gave us some "points" about what to expect in book 7 especially the two that get kicked off.... die and one that has got a reprieve!!! And she said she might kill off harry so no one would right sequels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that would be sooooo terrible i have no idea what to think!!!!!!!!!!! oh well buti love harry so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by LunaLovegoodRoxx23 Jun 27th 2006

MUGGLENET MUST UPDATE SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by lil_redhead Jun 27th 2006

i can't bare it, i nearly cried, i think now that its harry and voldemort that have met the chopping block. i have to go...

Posted by Harrys_gurl Jun 27th 2006

*sob* I feel sick just thinking about Harry dieing!

Posted by Harrys_gurl Jun 27th 2006

ok, going with what FirelightSpirit said, if it's true that one of them will live, it's obviously going to be Harry cuz if he died and Voldemort took over the world, the whole series would be stupid and pointless. lol, i feel much better now, but I STILL DON'T WANT HARRY TO DIE! *bursts into tears and begins hugging Harry Potter doll while violently shivering*

Posted by Kadaj Jun 27th 2006

This news that JKR will be killing two more characters has even made it on the news. They're covering the story on CNN!

Posted by Harrys_gurl Jun 27th 2006

And if Harry does die, *I begin to throw up* it will ruin the next Harry Potter movies for me because I'll just be sitting there thinking how poor Harry is going to die so young.....WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Jacaranda_Wand Jun 27th 2006

nyleetch2, I agree that it would be horrible for Harry, at the tender age of 17, to want to die because Voldemort is dead and he feels his sole purpose is done. I meant more that Jo, as a writer, might choose to have him, a character in her carefully plotter series, die to save those about whom he cares most. I can never see Harry choosing to die, but I can see him choosing to save others in a way that risks (and possibly ends) his life. I think that at least 3 characters will die, maybe more. I think that Harry is most at risk given that Voldemort hates him most, he has the riskiest tasks to face and he is brave to the border of foolhardy.nyleetch2, I agree that it would be horrible for Harry, at the tender age of 17, to WANT to die because Voldemort is dead, he feels his sole purpose is gone, and his misses his dead loved ones. I meant more that Jo, as a writer, might choose to have him, a character (whose life she has written full of tragedy) in her carefully-plotted series, die to save those about whom he cares most, because her plot (and who knows what the plot will do in the 7th book) and his character demand it. I can never see Harry choosing to die, but I can see him choosing to save others in a way that risks (and possibly ends) his life. I think that at least 3 good characters will die, maybe more. I think that Harry is most at risk given that Voldemort hates him most, he has the riskiest tasks to face and he is brave to the border of foolhardy. I just wanted it to be clear that I don’t want Harry to die, and I certainly don’t think that he should. What I do think is that IF Jo has decided to have one of the trio die in the final book, she will choose Harry.

Posted by Jadore_lui Jun 27th 2006

I think it is wrong that everyone is compaining that she has killed off two characters. I think she should kill as many characters as she needs, it will make the book far more amazing.

Posted by e_e_Black Jun 27th 2006

Book Seven Title: Harry Potter and the Brimming Graveyard

Posted by Jacaranda_Wand Jun 27th 2006

All that said...I don't think that she actually WILL kill off any of the trio. For some reason I have always been convinced that part of Ron and Hermione's role is to live to tell the tale. I see them both as ones to pick up the pieces and rebuild. They are part of the rebirth. And Harry...I think that Jo has said that he suffered enough. I think that she will kill off characters to make us really feel the evil and the fear, but I think that the trio will live. (And Ginny too- to marry Harry and make a big family like he never had!) Maybe that’s just wishful thinking. (ps-sorry for the glitch on the last post)

Posted by zachattack Jun 27th 2006

yeah, i thought it was great but im not two happy about harry potter might die but its ok i get it that she doesnt wont other writters right sequals so harry potter so im ok....

Posted by mighty Jun 27th 2006

Here's Book 7, as I see it: Harry doesn't return to Hogwarts. The war begins. OotP is busy as hell with all the fighting. One of the Weasleys dies (hmmm...the crystal ball is so foggy that I can't make out which one). Ron and Hermione get closer. Ginny tries to stay away, but she and Harry can't suppress their feelings, so she does everything in her power to help/be near him. Dumbledore's ghost helps them all. Harry DOES become an Auror, trained by Tonks. :D Harry FINALLY kills Snape, who had a big fat crush on Lilly when they were in school (hey, she was just being nice to the poor kid, but she fell in love with James). Snape never forgave her and has been taking it out on Harry ever since (Harry Potter, you rotter, who looks SOOO much like James. A flurry of battles and horcruxes and AUNTIE EM! AUNTIE EM! IT'S A TWISTER! and turns, and before you know it, Harry and Voldemort have killed each other. Harry has sacrificed himself to save the world. Ron and Hermione get married and name the first child Harry (Harriet?). Ok Jo, how many did I get right? What do you mean you won't grade this until next July?!

Posted by William Jun 27th 2006

The interview was OK. The only info I got was that 2 characters are going to die that she did not expect to in the original ending and 1 reprieval. I'm really worried for a couple of characters, especially a few in the first book. I think it may be Hagrid and Hermione. Hope I am wrong. I doesn't matter who it is, I will still be upset. JKR is still the best, no matter who dies in the series. I also agree there could have been some better questions.

Posted by englandrox Jun 27th 2006

I don't like the comment earlier that the two exta dead could be twins....note to JK : DON'T KILL F & G!!! I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!THEY ARE TOO FUNNY TO DIE

Posted by apwbdumbledore Jun 27th 2006

Something tells me, that the two persons killed are going to be either Ginny and Harry or Ron and Hermione...

Posted by baruchgershom Jun 27th 2006

Interestingly, she says that there were two who die at the end that she did not plan to kill. That suggests that others die, too. I believe it will be Snape and Voldemort, among others.
