New details: JKR considered suicide
New details: JKR considered suicide New details have emerged from the interview an Edinburgh University student conducted with JK Rowling in which she openly discussed the depression she dealt with earlier in her life.

“Mid-twenties life circumstances were poor and I really plummeted,” said Rowling. “The thing that made me go for help . . . was probably my daughter. She was something that earthed me, grounded me, and I thought, this isn’t right, this can’t be right, she cannot grow up with me in this state.”

...

"We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking 'I'm a little bit miserable',"

I'm glad she got help! And hey, it's normal to go through these thoughts! I'm really proud of her, and she's accomplished sooo much after going through all this. Plus, I remember talking on her documentary about this, and how it became the inspiration for the dementors. I love how she takes the worst times, and puts them into timeless creativity. Yay Jo!

thank God miss rowling is all right!!!!!

Posted by KristiofSlytherin Mar 24th 2008

I admire her for telling her story. I think it is very inspiring of her. She is an example of fighting through even the darkest of times to get to the light at the end. She found her happiness.

Posted by Fawkesdog Mar 24th 2008

if she had commited suicide some people probably would've too. Harry Potter was one of the only things that got some people through that kind of time in their lives. kind of me too.

Posted by Helter_Skelter Mar 24th 2008

Ha! I submitted this piece of news... But seriously, I'm glad that she feels comfortable reflecting on that rut in her life.

Posted by chommy Mar 24th 2008

@Bow_to_death: Thank you! Everytime I tell ANYONE I'm depressed or something, they just laugh and say I'm stupid or something and then they're telling everyone how stupid I am because I have suicidal thoughts and that I'm always depressed. You're the first person who actually tried to make me feel better, instead of bringing me down some more.

Posted by Kairicka Mar 24th 2008

That's so sad! I'm so glad she had the incentive to turn her life around. I admire her even more!

Posted by loonyxlunaxlovegood Mar 24th 2008

Oh, wow. Jo is amazing. I'm doing a report on her and just finished reading about her during that time, and it really is a miracle she pushed through it. I mean, absolute strangers hated her. The thought of her hurting that much just makes you want to go back in time and give her the biggest hug the world has ever known.

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 24th 2008

not surprised with this news at all, I always thought she was a bit odd from her interviews. She's an extremely intense, serious person in general. She does not seem like a fun loving, easy going person at all. I've also noticed that she has a short temper. Anyway thats not the point, I'm glad that she overcame the horrible experience though and got her life back on track. I hope she is happy now with her family. Well done Jo for getting through it! On the subject of suicide in my opinion taking your own life is a very stupid, shelfish thing to do. Even though I realise that a person must be feeling so desperate and at rock-bottom to consider doing that, its terrible that those people do not bother to think about the poor people they are leaving behind. I've heard such tragic stories of young teens committing suicide and my heart breaks for their poor parents who have lost their children. So I think it was very wise of Jo to stay stong for her daughter, because no matter how bad we are feeling we have to think about other people too and how our actions would affect them. There is always something to live for if you have even one person who you love.

Posted by lovely_bellatrix Mar 24th 2008

Way to go Jo. You are such a true inspiration. You have left your mark on the world and encourage others to do the same.

Posted by alexxx Mar 24th 2008

To all the people here struggling with depression, I'm sending you all air hugs and kisses, and I'm praying for you.

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 24th 2008

Chommy: I am so sorry to hear that you are depressed. My advise to you is to confide in a family member or very close friend and explain whats going on for you but my first choice of advice is for you to maybe talk to a counseller/therapist. It may sound scary and drastic but if you are feeling bad all the time (which i don't know if you are or not, i'm just guessing) that would really be the best option. Its only one hour a week and its a space where you can just let everything go, express what what your feeling and whats going on in your life. It really helped me in the past in my early teens when i started a new school and hit puberty. seeing a therapist really helped me gain confidence and helped me grow emotionally and thought me to stop thinking so much and so negatively about things. Because of it, I stopped annalysing everything and just started living life more. Another piece of advice though (as a friend): I would not go around telling lots of people you are depressed (e.g. in school) as a lot of people will see this as attention-seeking, that is why they are calling you stupid. They think you are seeking attention and not actually depressed. Its awfully mean of them but sadly thats the kind of world we live in. I hope this has helped and i hope you decide to talk to someone. All the best! Kerrie :)

mmmm... this story has a high gossip magazine contence....It's not much of news anyway, because it is common knowledge and almost a trademark of JKR that she hit rockbottom when returning from a failed Portugese marriage. Considering suicide is such situation is not the same as being suicidal, probably 95% of all people at such a stage think: "When i finish my life all suffer is gone..... but who the heck is gonna take care of my.... child/cat/dog/geranium/wh at ever needs attention....." and goes on living. Even whenever she did not have a daughter, she most likely had an other valuable link to life, how small it may have been to prevent considering becomming commiting.

Posted by mrsfredw Mar 24th 2008

My friend actually sent this article to me and i was not surprised that Jo had been depressed. She went through a lot of tough times, proving even more why she is such a hero in so many people's, including my own, eyes. No matter how hard life can be at the moment, don't throw away what you will have. Like Jo was grounded by jessica, don't forget the ones around you who love you no matter what. thank you to my friend for not wanting me to sink into that low and thank you jo for your inspiration that even if i do, i can make it out

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 24th 2008

Chommy: I just read your first post, please please please do not consider suicide. There is nothing to be gained from it, you will only devestate those who love you. As i said in my last post, therapy does help. If you are really feeling this low, get a family member or close friend to bring to you a professional as soon as possilbe, I promise that it can only be a positive thing. It will not make things worse, only better. I don't know what your family situation is or what big things are going on for you are the moment but i know that suicude will not help, it would devestate me for one, not to mention your family and friends. A therapist appointment is on a phone-call away so do not be afraid, they are there to help you and listen, not to judge. Its only one hour a week and it could make you feel so much better. Please reply when you get this ok.

Posted by adriandoher Mar 24th 2008

thank God she overcame her depression and was able to have strenght to keep insisting, because if not she maybe wouldnt have had her books published, and her whole life changed. I'm so gratefull she found help and i think this inspires other depressed people that their life can also change, and you never know what life can bring to you! she didnt atleast!

GOOD FOR U JO!! at one time a couple of years ago i had my first really bad anxiety attack and i was scared of scuicide. well, i was scared of everything and i mean that. i wouldn't eat lunch at school all year because i was afraid one of the more annoying boys in my class had poisoned it and i am not afraid to say that. but, the point is, with things and conditions like that, therapy does help alot. i was only nine at the time(im 11 now) and i was so freaked out and paranoid that i could not go on with daily activities as i usually would have. i went to the therapy for a while and after a couple of months i drew a rainbow with a pot of gold at the end and the therapist explained to me that all of my fears were just like the pot of gold, fake. and that is really what took care of it. so anybody that is considering scuicide *fake coughs chommy* just remember that life will get better and that i am living, breathing proof that therapy does work extremely well. good luck to anyone who has second thoughts about life and i advise therapy or praying. don't leave us for some stupid reason samantha

Posted by NicoleM Mar 24th 2008

My mom went through the exact situation as Jo. My mom lost both her parents when she was very young, and she told me (after I told her about what Jo said) that what made her get through those thoughts was me and my sister. She realized too that she couldn't leave us. I really have to write to her and tell her how much this means to me that she talks about her depression. It isn't always easy, because some people don't believe you. My mother knew she needed to get help and the people around her kept saying "your okay..your fine...you look fine!"

Posted by halfbloodprincess96 Mar 24th 2008

hey everybody, above when it said samantha, that is my name the computer didn't space right.

for anyone who is extremely depressed, the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention program has a 24-hour hotline, and are online at: www.yellowribbon.org I think almost everyone, at a really low point in their lives, contemplates suicide, or at least has the experience of feeling nearly worthless. just remember that everyone in this world is here for a reason... I think Jo is a great inspiration for us all -- she was an 'ordinary' person who suffered through depression and struggled financially, but her success was phenomenal. It just goes to show that no matter how meaningless or depressing you think your life is, you are someone who can and will contribute to society, in ways small or large. Of course this is small consolation for someone suffering depression, but going through with suicide will hurt yourself and society far more than living through your problems and overcoming them.

Posted by Slytherin15 Mar 24th 2008

woa emerson posted something! Thanks Jessica for saving Jo's life! NOO SUICIDE IS NEVER THE ANSWER FOR YOUR PROBLEMS!!!

Posted by alastormoody Mar 24th 2008

wow... can you imagen what it would be like if she did...

Posted by ryroandhobo Mar 24th 2008

ZOMG. IMAGINE A WORLD W/O HARRY POTTER. i think that it's horrible she thought to do suicide. no wonder she's trying to help others out there by charity and stuff. she's brilliant! and yes, we really need to thank her daughter!

Posted by dark_nymph Mar 24th 2008

Wow. Yet another reason to admire Jo. I had the same problem in my mid-teens, not very long ago. I was struggling accademically and socially, and it seemed like the harder I tried to get my life together the more it fell apart. Eventually, I started going to therapy and was briefly on anti-depressants. Admitting I had a problem was probably the hardest part for me, since most people see me as a happy and fun-loving person who never lets the world get the best of me. But it was worth it, and I would encourage, no, I DEMAND that anyone who is in a similar situation to talk to an adult they trust. Jo has once again proven to be a wonderful example for us all.

Posted by Moaning_Myrtle Mar 24th 2008

Poor Jo! I'm glad she got help, though. It is so sad and shocking that she was once in such a horrible position in life-- with a child and such depression. I'm glad she's okay now :) ~Myrtle~

Posted by Get_sirius Mar 24th 2008

JKR is my ROLE MODLE shes been through everything and lived through it to produce the best book series in the world!!

Posted by Boogie_Shoes Mar 24th 2008

I'm glad she's so open about stuff like this. I've struggled with depression for a good chunk of my young life...and it sucks that even in this day and age, there's so much stigma surrounding it. When people like Jo talk about their own struggles, it just feels good to those of us who have been there. She's such a hugely influential person, just saying "i was depressed and i got help and look at me now", is a lot. I swear every time I think she couldn't possibly become more admirable to me, she turns around and does or says something else, and I'm like wow. She's so amazing. Jo, you rock my world.

Posted by dracosaurus13 Mar 25th 2008

.. you know, just looking at some of these comments kinda hints at what kind of fans some of you really are. honestly reading that was awfully strange and pitiful. i mean come on, after just finding out that she's struggled with and contemplated suicide, all some of you guys have to say is 'oh thank goodness, i'm so glad she didn't because then we would never would've had harry potter!' are you guys aware of how selfish and ignorant you seem by expressing that? you guys are basically implying that if you didn't have the harry potter series to gain from all of this then otherwise you wouldn't even give a shhh. you wouldn't even be 'thankful' in the first place. i understand that yea, it's a weird thought and all, but is that the only thing you really care about, seriously? that's so low. the least you could do is be a little more grateful. the world doesn't exactly revolve around your lives. i'm sorry that some people's lives aren't as glamorous as yours. and it's people like jo that truly epitomize the definition of success, not to mention what it truly means to be a gryffindor. and chommy, don't let the thoughts consume you. life can be a girl, but just keep in mind once you take that step, there's never going back. we never really get to grasp the finality of it all until it's too late. just keep your head up, whoever you are. but really, it's a wonder how our society hasn't managed to crumble yet. :p

Posted by Mintorateoishii Mar 25th 2008

What I find inspiring is the fact that she's not embarrassed by it, or more importantly, was never embarrassed by it (even when she was depressed). It may sound silly to be embarrassed by a medical condition, but if you actually have depression, you know that people do treat you differently and feel awkward around you. Depression really epitomizes traits that people don't like, like self-pity, lack of enthusiasm, and pessimism, so it's easy to feel ashamed about being so unlikable. The fact that she's speaking so openly about this might inspire a lot of people to stop feeling so embarrassed themselves and to seek help. As someone who's depressed herself, I'm not surprised that she's contemplated suicide. Those kinds of thoughts can sneak in when you're having your worst bouts of depression. In any case, I'm very glad she sought help, and she's inspired me to want to look into CBT as well. It's very refreshing to know there can be a light at the end of the tunnel.

wot the bluddy hell!!!! omg omg !!! hu'd have thot? YAAAAY FOR HER DAUGHTER!!! thank gosh she didnt! imagine the world without harry potter....i mean i wudnt be angry right now cus they dnt hav mugglcast out yet!!! >=(

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 25th 2008

Oh, Jo, we love you so much. Seriously - what an inspiration. She's so strong and she managed to make it through such a dark period in her life - and now look at her! :) Am I the only one who thinks that Jo Rowling is a lot like Lily Potter? (not the suicide part, of course, but how strong she is).

Posted by SlytherinBabe Mar 25th 2008

OMG this is such a scary thought. If Jo would've killed herself are lives would've been drasticly different. A life without Harry Potter? are u kidding me?! Thank goodness for Jo's daughter. i hate to think what would've happened if it hadnt been for Jessica.Gosh now my stomach is in knots just thinking about it. WE LOVE YOU JO!!!!!!!!

Posted by fleur_delacour Mar 25th 2008

I really do admire Jo for the strength she had to overcome depression but i think u ppl ought to realize that many ppl go through depression and get over it.. we just don't noe about all those ppl coz the media doesn't interfere in their life

Posted by kerrman2004 Mar 25th 2008

would you people stop saying 'oh my god thank god jo didn't kill herself or our lives woudl be so different without Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter but for gods sake, its a fictional book series. Do you really think Jo cared about our entertainment when she was feeling that bad about herself. Get over yourselves people. Jo is a human being, she wasn't put on this earth to entertain us. Yes. her writting is a huge talent and the world is better because of it, but seriously its incredibly shelfish of you people. All your thinking about is a world without Harry Potter, not Jo!

Posted by Susan14 Mar 25th 2008

I'm not surprised. In interviews she always seems so sad. Her expression, motions, and overall personality all spoke of a hard life that was filled with depression. Poor woman. It reminds me of Deathly Hallows when Harry stood in front of his parents grave, and almost wished he was under the cold snow (or something like that) with them. When I read that line, it felt like I was hearing Rowling speak that in reference to something she has felt in her life. It was eerie.

Posted by Kareen Mar 25th 2008

I agree with dracosaurus13... you guys are so completely insensitive! To only be glad that she's still alive so that you get to read the books is one of the most selfish things I've ever heard! You should be happy that she's still there for her kids and that she found happiness! And personally, I think this is a lame reason for more people to look up to her. Average everyday people deal with the same situation and worse situations and contemplate suicide but manage to pull through it somehow without the help of anyone else or the sudden fame that made everything easier. The main reason why its such a big deal is because she's famous. Both me and my mom have depression and so do hundreds of thousands of others, but you don't see people making a big deal over them for overcoming it, its because they aren't well known or famous.

Posted by meant2be_a_marauder Mar 25th 2008

I can understand how you felt Jo..I battled suicide too. Alhamdulillah it's better now but then it felt like a Dementor was by my side constantly. It's terrible. I'm glad Jo's opening up about it and that she didn't give in! Jo you really are an inspiration for the people out there who are contemplating suicide... Umm..I know it's a little gross for me to point out..but it's a kind of a coincidence that Jo looks like she's mimicking slitting her throat in the picture..

Posted by HBP_HagridsBigPoop_ Mar 25th 2008

Whoa. I'm EXTREMELY glad that Jo didn't succumb to her depression--good for you, Jo! I mean, where would we all be without her? I'm so glad she pulled through. And for anyone else out there battling depression and suicidal thoughts, just know that all of us on MuggleNet are here for you and you deserve MUCH better than suicide. Let's let JK Rowling be an inspiration to us all!

Posted by anglone01 Mar 25th 2008

ok that is so private. why does the whole world have to know?!?!??!?!?! unless she is going to attempt to help others it was totally pointless to say that!

Posted by i_loverz_HP Mar 25th 2008

i just love harry potter fictional or not hes my hero. i know other people who have gone through this that aren't famous.. i mean i dont have to find someone famous to be my inspiration on over coming suicide alot of other people can do it i just look at her for writing harry potter cuz its so amazing!!!!!!

Posted by str8_up_lee Mar 25th 2008

okaii im not giving her props on this one... its stupid! the reason that ppl commit suicide or go emo is becuz they feel like they get no attention or something and tey thhink they have a hard life.. the emo bit is cuz they want some attention in there finally... thsi si too gay man!!! and pplsu y the FUCKKK would u tell that to teh public... thats personal man!!!!

Posted by Winky_911 Mar 25th 2008

I think it is wonderful that Jo has shared so much of her personal story, and her struggles, with her fans. I love Harry Potter, but I love Jo as well. Knowing what she struggled through, and how her perseverance was rewarded, helps remind me that I never know what is right around the corner!!

Posted by HBP_HagridsBigPoop_ Mar 25th 2008

str8_up_lee, not all cases of suicide are for attention. There are some people who are "emo" just to get attention, but others are truly depressed. I don't think it's right of you to accuse JKR of just wanting attention. And I also think that it is not such a bad thing for her to tell the public, because she could be helping others who are currently battling depression. If you know that there are other people out there that went through what you're going through (especially someone as amazing as JKR) then it's likely to help. And i_loverz_HP, I didn't mean that JKR should be everybody's inspiration, I just meant that because everyone knows of her she COULD be an inspiration to those currently suffering from depression. And like you said, of course she's an inspiration because of her books! I don't know what we'd do without them.
