New details: JKR considered suicide
“Mid-twenties life circumstances were poor and I really plummeted,” said Rowling. “The thing that made me go for help . . . was probably my daughter. She was something that earthed me, grounded me, and I thought, this isn’t right, this can’t be right, she cannot grow up with me in this state.”

"We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking 'I'm a little bit miserable',"

amandapadfoot and dracosaurus, i agree completely! that is exactly how i feel, and i can definatly relate...... i and so many people i know have thought of suicide because of the depression. but over the years i have realized no matter what it is not the way, jo is one of the best examples of that. and depression hurts a lot, but friends and family(mostly friends for me) are the best way to help it, cuz no matter what you have your best friends to help you through the rough times ahead. which i think because of jo's depression, she was able to send a message through the harry potter series, not that its more important than her being ok. i'm just glad she pulled through with her daughter as a focus point to what is great in life. thats what i did when ever i had those thoughts, i thought of all the people i love and care about and the ones who love and care about me. also, i thought about making a difference in the world. and then i think about jo, how she has made a difference in the world and not just through the series.......... so now i am making my way through each day step by step. and wait....... wait for the moment to shine and prove evry one wrong.
OMG!!!!!! Thank God she didn't kill herself. I wouldn't be sitting here holding the Deathly Hallows if she did now, would I? Bless you JK Rowling and Emerson!!
hahaha hagridsbigpoop i love that name i start laughing every time i read it....oh jeez!!!!!
You are an inspiration, Jo. God bless
Taylor_the_girl_who_knows _ur_cell_Emmy: would you people stop saying stuff like "oh my god thank god Jo didn't kill herself or we wouldn't have Harry Potter" I love Harry Potter but for gods sake, its a fictional book series. Do you really think Jo cared about our entertainment when she was feeling that bad about herself. Get over yourselves people. Jo is a human being, she wasn't put on this earth to entertain us. Yes. her writting is a huge talent and the world is better because of it, but seriously, its incredibly selfish of you people. All you're thinking about is a world without Harry Potter, not about poor Jo and how she was feeling. You selfish people drive me crazy. For anyone out there suffernig from depression please have some of my love xxxx my advice to you guys is to talk to a professional and stay strong and postivie. Confide in a family member or close friend, Eat lots of healthy food (fruit & veg) and excercise more (anything that gets your heart pumping like running or dancing), Keep busy and stay positive. Everything will be ok... xxxx love Kerrie.
Hey feelingwitchy, don't get so upset!
Hey feelingwitchy don't get so upset. some people just really like the books.
Wow. Imagine how the world would be different. We wouldn't be able to have the books or anything. I feel horrible for her and I am very thankful that she realized that she needed help in time to save her own life.
to feelingwitchy and other people who agree: if you paid attention, some of the people are saying "thank goodness she got through it, otherwise i could never have gotten through whatever" because the hp books help a lot of people through tough times. i can totally relate to those people, although i've never gone through anything all that bad, i've had bad days when all i want to do is read hp over and over. so these people aren't necessarily being selfish.
I totally agree with WordNerd014. Feelingwitchy and everyone else like them need to realize that these people aren't necissarily being selfish.
wow ... i can't believe she would actually admit it. And it's not like other people here admitting it by posting there depressed and considering suicide because we don't exactly know you. She is so inspirational! and as for everyone else here who has considered suicide ... it's not the answer, you should fight your depression and i know this sounds cliche but truly there are amazing and wonderful things in this world and people who care, you don't need to go down that road.
i totally agree w/ kerrman, but a little bit w/ wordnerd too. not everyone is being selffish(although some definatly are). like me, i definatly wouldnt be where i am today....... with out harry potter i would not be as stable and sane as i am now, and that may sound like an exageration, but it is far from it. and i think from time to time that that is probably jo feels....... but i am not being selfish, i think that even w/ out the series i would be looking up to jo right now just as i am, cuz she would most likely do all the charitable things she does now. and that is why each passing moment i grow more respect for her, cuz even if she didnt have the series(which is a fat chance, cuz i mean look at how creative she is) jo would still be out there, already won the war w/ depression as harry did w/ voldemort and the not-understandingness of his past. which i think is how she related to most things in her book(big battle that was completely hard to deal w/).
IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT TO ALL FANS OF THE HP SERIES AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SIRIUS BLACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!oh by the way, there is this great website that is totally harry pottertized, but very into sirius black, well actually its a sirius black fan club site. any way they are really cool, they have poetry contest art contest, and sooooo much more. or you can just submit it with a comment saying how you thought it up. its great and they have a chat room and email to different members, and it doesnt cost anything to join. look me up if you check out the site, i am using this same username(of course!). altho i did just join yesterday. any way it is an amazing website that i hope all of you who havent seen it, check it out!
oops, forgot to put name of website....... its immeritus.org, sorry about my stupdity everyone. -humble apologies, allison broyes. oh and this DOESNT mean that it is better than mugglenet or anything, just thought that people who really feel strongly connected to sirius should check it out. and thats all i have to say
WordNerd014: The comments I was talking about are the people who said 'thank God she got through it or there'd have been no harry potter' there were a couple of comments like that. I realise that the Harry Potter books have helped a lot of people and made them happier (myself definitley included in that category) but seriously at the end of the day....its a fictional book series about witches and wizards. Its like you guys are like comparing it to the Holy Bible or something. Don't get me wrong I love Harry Potter, i love fantasy books and films and tv shows that let me escape from reality but at the end of the day its FICTION. Jo is a talented writer, but she's still a human being with feelings. Have a bit more respect for her and the horrible situation she was in, it has nothing to do with her writing and the HP books. She was a broke, single divorced mother living off benifits. That is such a terrible situation to be in and has absolutley nothing to do with us enjoying the HP books. If Harry Potter had never been written we would all be obsessed with something else like Twilight. Again, just to make my point clear Jo's depression has nothing to do with us enjoying the books.
Would anyone believe that I actually started crying while reading this story? That is such a sad, yet inspirational, story. I hope others will follow her example and strong will.
Thanks for the compliment, i_loverz_HP. I like my name too...and to think it all started as an inside joke here on MuggleNet a couple of years ogo.... ;)
Makes me admire her even more which I didn't think possible :). I'm so glad she speaks openly about all the matters that she does it's so important and such an eye opener. Thanks Jessica and Jo's GP can you imagine what a loss it would be (to her family and friends but also to the world) if she'd commited suicide - I shudder at the thought. Jo's smarter and stronger than that though she survived that phase of her life and now she's an inspiration to all of us. Love you Jo
Contrary to some things I have heard, I don't think that her contemplating sucide makes her a bad person. Sure it is a horrible thing to do, to even consider taking your own life, but I believe that the fact that she was able to overcome this and go on to be as succesful as she is now should make her even more of an inspiration than she previouly was. That kind of depression is really serious and having the courage and strenght to seek help and work through this should make her a role model and inspiration to all.
