Character death odds, from the online experts
USA Today wanted to know which characters the "experts" thought were going to die in Book 7, so they asked me and Melissa from TLC to give some odds. Here's what we said. Even though they called us separately, notice the similarity of the numbers we provided.
For those of you in the Chicago area, ABC 7 may be broadcasting tonight a recorded interview where I go a little more in-depth than just pulling some numbers out of my butt, but I'm not sure exactly when it will air. As soon as I know, you'll know.

Wow that is really cool how they are really close!
Can anyone cap it?
sweet.
Hey that's cool 3rd post???
interesting
im surprised Draco isnt on the list.
Cosmic!! Go Emerson! top 10?
I've vote waaaaaay higher on Snape dying. If he does turn out to be "good" in the end, can we honestly see anything else besides a heroic, self sacrificing death where we all still hate him (including Harry, of course) but realize that he has been good all along?
i dont know about minerva, i would miss her, shes brilliant. and i think there is a full possibility that ron and hermionie could die, its possible they die in a fight, their deaths could be used to weaken harry's morale for example. and where are ppl like draco and the other weasleys, i really thing mrs weasley is for the chop.
Yeah, Voldy's definately gonna die. Harry's pretty high on the list too. Personally, I think that Ron and Hermione will survive, and I think Snape will too. For Snape, he'll be just about to be captured by one of the Order before he gives them this vital evidence just in time that proves that he's a good guy. One of the Weasleys is doomed, I mean, it's very unlikely that a family of eight will survive a huge wizarding war with no casulties.
i'm scared to read the seventh book. itll be way sad. ill cry more than i did in the sixth ;_;
seventh book will be sad. i hope its voldy:-)
Melissa and Emerson make good points, but why didn't they get asked about more main characters? Hagrid, Lupin, and all the other Weasleys, just to name a few?
i agree with shawry. can someone please record the thing?
I agree with Isil_Helyanwe about the Weasleys, I don't think there's a very good chance that all of them will last ='(
thats cool. the 7th book is going to be sad if hp, hg, or rw die. i hope voldermort dies though. I'm thought that Draco would be on that list, too.
Well...me myself would think it'd be better for Vol-He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named AND Harry to die! "Priori Incantatem" mean anything to anybody?! And I think Hermione got the reprieve just 'cause I think it'd be cool to see where she ends up in life. (All those grades...and ends up working at a muggle diner.)
Wow that is sweet i hope its voldemort cause i hate that guy!!!! But the 7th book is going to be sad i bet its going to be even more sad then the sixth...... i was really sad when dumbledore died.......the 2 people i really wont to die is Voldemort & Snape cause Snape and Voldemort are likely to die but maybe Harry might die two cause Jo said that she didnt wont other writters to copy her idea..im surprised that Draco isnt on there i would of thought he would die cause he is all evil and all. Well i hope the right people die and im so sad that the 7th book is the last...(cry,cry)
Harry won't die. remember when jk said that she would finish the 7th book by telling about what the 3 did with the rest of their lives? just a thought. if any one besides snape or voldy dies, i will cry. im still sad about sirius.:-(
SOME ONE BETTER CAP it lol im still sad about sirius also but if harry dies i wont be able to get threw it :(
Oh my gosh! That's the coolest! My newspaper would never do something like that... Yeah, I hope someone in the Chicago area can record that so we can see.
i wana live in chicago. my friend lives there. ill call her and ask her to cap it
JKR said on the talk show that she changed the ending to have two characters die. That does not rule out that there could be more deaths that she had originally planned before. Also she said that they were dealing with pure evil so that means these two characters were good guys. So there could be even more deaths for the bad guys (Bellatrix,Lucius,Wormtail,Voldemort). I agree with Asherford in that if Snape is good he has to prove it with some big sacrifice because he has done a lot of bad. Plus i think the Weasley's have had enough near death experiences hopefully they all will be safe. I also think that Harry will make a sacrifice for his loved ones just like his parents, Dumbledore, and Sirius.
I agree with bucke71. This is shoddy journalism from USA Today. The statement wasn't that she is planning to kill two characters...It was that she is planning on killing two characters that she didn't initially intend to have die. That's quite a different story. Some of the arguments provided by the "experts" are rather weak, as well. Take, for instance, the second expert's comment on McGonagall..."She's strong"? How does that inhibit Rowling from having her killed if she thinks it would benefit the story? Dumbledore just died, didn't he? It's silly to not differentiate the writing process from the character attributes. It's story-intrinsic analysis when they should be thinking extrinsically.
Voldemort's dead. Mrs. Weasley worries too much about others, and she'll likely go. If Hermione goes, I think Ron has to go with her, but who knows. Ginny could live on w/o Harry, but they could both go. Snape's probly going to go out either way, unless he uses some cool intelect to sneak out. But anyways, my guess is Harry got the reprieve and Mrs. Weasley and Ron are the ones that'll go that she didn't intend to kill originally.
but it could be minor character, like u no whos people. it could be draco or his dad. of course, it could also be tonks or lupin. what if lupin turns into a werewolf and kills tonks? or something like that.
Cool, Emerson! You're a HP expert! :) That's so awesome that they asked you're opinion. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you and Melissa are probably right about Voldemort dying. LOL Obviously he's going to die! I think Snape might die by sacrficing himself for Harry. There's no way Hermione will die. She's the love interest. And in that case, Ron can't be killed off either. I think that Draco was probably the character who got the reprieve. He still has some good in him. But I don't know who it could be. JKR certainly knows how to keep her fans occupied while waiting for her books, that's for sure.
I think I'd like to see Neville go out in a blaze of glory(well not "like" but that would be a good death), living up to his parents. Perhaps even avenging them in a showdown with Bellatrix.
maybe peter petigrew will save harry from vol- u- know- who. he still owes harry a life debt. remember?
i agree completely about whos gonna die and stuff!
Very true, and very likely. Love the statistics.
Even though this is highly unlikely, I think Voldemort wont die completely in the 7th book because JK Rowling said one character she was planning would die throughout the whole series will now stay alive. As i said...very unlikely but possible.
Wow. I love the internet. I love that the internet can take two teenagers and show the world that they can be experts at something, such as Harry Potter. It's so great. I mean before the internet, kids wouldnt get this kind of respect from USA Today. Anyway. I pretty much agree with their stats, but I would've liked to see a few more people on the chart. I can see one of the Weasley's going, which would be horrible but maybe neccesary? I can see Percy dying actually, fighting for the good side and making right his betrayal of his family in earlier books. And I can definetly see Neville dying, as much as I hate that. He's a great character, and one that might proove himself as a brave Gryffindor by dying for the cause. Well, only time will tell.
i agree with _xlaura. we have always wondered why and how neville got placed in griffindor. it woiuld make sense. he was pretty brave in Ootp, but he needed to prove himself.
Wow thats so cool... but i have 2 disagree with Emerson on the Professor McGonagall comment, i think ill be quite upset if she died. i loved her in OOTP especially when shes with Umbridge, those scenes had me laughing each time lol.
interesting by michael_xxx10 Really? Please explain why.
I like the stats. But did anyone notice that the paper says that McGonagall is the Deputy Headmistress. Wouldn't she be the Headmistress now?
whats there to explain dinky_diddy_kins?
Come on Emerson? 0% on McGonagall? I think it's probably a little higher. I loveMcGonagall personally. I could see JKR killing her off (although I would be really upset!)
Remember what Lupin said in PoA? He didn't think Harry dying would be a good way to repay his parents' sacrifice, even *if* he was referring to Harry's carelessness in that instance. They died so he could *live.* he's The Boy who *Lived.* I suppose sacrificing himself for the good of the rest of the world would be a worthy cause, but I don't think he *needs* to die. rupertrox - Don't say such things! That would be unbearably tragic.
I have been trying to figure this out...and it is a really simple question........what was the connection between Harry and Voldemort in the 3rd book....I know the first was Prof. Quirrel..2nd was Tom Riddle...4th was the graveyard scene....etc.
wow they don't think anyone except voldemort will die. i think harry will...or rather hope he'll die in the process of killing voldemort, where he dies as well. i think ron'll die and probably snape. this is the last book! there will be many deaths!!! or so i hope, because i think it'll make a really good dramatic ending...i know, cynical but what the heck :P
tough to figure out...but more could be dying then just two, right? also...what about Hagrid???? (my vote: 50% odds of death)
Harry's going to die, as much as i hate to say it. or type it. Dumbledore's triumphant face says it all. Harry and Voldy share the same blood, so if one of them dies, then maybe both of them die. also, " - neither can live while the other survives..." said the prophecy. Say Harry was killed by Voldemort. from his point of view, the other would survive. so according to the prophecy, both of them would die. I also hope Bellatrix and Lucius die. i hate them. It's going to be soooo hard reading the last chapter, and the last page.
I know he already died, but what if Dumbledore was bad? I know it's pretty much the craziest twist ever, but hey! In order to be a hp sleuth you've gotta think outside the lines!
siriusluver - Pettigrew escaped to return to Voldemort and Trelawney made her second prophecy--the one about the return of Voldemort. Also, people just thought Sirius Black was a follower of Voldemort and was trying to get to Harry. I quite like McGonagall--I would have sort of a hard time with her dying. Besides, everyone knows Hermione *is* McGonagall.
Here's my theory about the 7th book: I believe that since Voldemart transfered some of his magic(i.e able to speak paseltongue) into Harry the night he gave harry the scar, Harry must die as well. If Voldemart died, and Harry was still alive, wouldn't a piece of Voldemart's spirit reside in Harry? If so, then Voldemart could some how come back through Harry, so then Harry would have to die in order for Voldemart to die completely. This might be the better route, because if he stayed alive, than everyone will wonder what his future's like, if he get's married, has children, remains friends with Ron and Hermione. Since JK said that she won't do another Harry Potter book, then it would seem rushed if she told about Harry's future in the 7th book in one chapter. That would be bad. So, I think Harry will die in the next book. Maybe Snape too.
McGonagall can't die! Neither can Ron, or Hermione, or Harry, or........ well, the point is, I kind of agree with them- but only because to me, people that I really don't want to die is my theory of who's going to go. So basically, if it's my opinion that they shouldn't kick the can, then they won't- they can't! Well, they shouldn't!
i didn't say he needs to die. i said he wouldnt die, r4v3ncl4w! it would be too sad! here's my theory's~ peter pettigrew might die to save harry.(he owes harry a life debt, remember) Lupin could turn into a werewolf and injure or kill tonks harry shouldnt die because jk had said that she would finish the books saying what the 3 did with their lives. hence 3. these are just ideas, of course
Personally, I think that Ron has a very high possibility of dying... As much as it would kill me to watch beautiful Rupert die... But think about it. He's shown that he would sacrifice himself to help Harry. And we know he'd die for Hermione's sake by this point. And I think Snape will die... If he's a traitor (which I'm not really believing... I'm a supporter of he DID kill Dumbledore.. but on his orders...) he'll be killed. Traitors never live... whether they're a traitor to the good or the evil. Which is why Pettigrew will die. But yeah... Snape+Traitor====Death by Harry. And if he's good... he'll help Harry and probably be killed by Voldemort. So yeah not good odds for our beloved Snape. Gah. I don't even want to think about the next book. Bleh. Haha I wish that Hermione would die(not trying to sound horrible here...) because she annoys me and it would make a good story. But none of the signs point to her dying. But yeah. This is totally long but I was just writing who I think will die next book. I'm thinking... Ron, Voldemort, Snape, Pettigrew, Lupin, Draco Malfoy, maybe Lucius, and Hagrid. Yeah large death toll... but it has to happen.
