Potter leaves NYT Best-Seller List for First Time in a Decade
Potter leaves NYT Best-Seller List for First Time in a Decade Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone originally appeared on the New York Times Bestseller list back in December of 1998. The impact of Potter's popularity led the NYT to creating two new lists so other titles could make the list other than Jo's stories.

Now, almost ten years later, the May 11th edition of The Sunday New York Times will be free of any Potter novel. Check out the NYT's Book Blog for more.

Once JK Rowling's Potter Encyclopedia is released, we're sure Potter will make a comeback. Thanks to Pruneau for the tip!

Posted by HpAlwaysN4ever May 1st 2008

That is so sad. It's amazing that it was on the best seller's list for 10 years though!

Posted by kpo9876 May 1st 2008

What? That is so sad. I can't believe that it was on there for 10 years. That part is pretty cool, and it should be an achievement.

Posted by slugclubgirl77 May 1st 2008

WHAAAAAT?! ok harry potter is deffinately the BEST BOOK out there...and i'm almost 100 percent sureee it will make it backk on the listt

Posted by Mira May 1st 2008

Just another example of the beginning of the end of a Harry Potter era... *sigh* So sad. At least I was able to grow up living through it all.

Posted by xmugglecastismylifex May 1st 2008

Ohmygod, that is SO DEPRESSING. *cries* Soon we will see it closed, The final chapter exposed, It

Posted by Kaitlynnn May 1st 2008

well. that's a little more than slightly depressing. :/ now i'm sad. sigh.

Posted by lennyseberet May 1st 2008

It really is sad, and i feel like the series *is* beginning to slip away now that all of the books are out but- and no one yell at me- the books have held their place for ten years and its time to make room for the young'uns. This is a tad random, but is anyone else seriously annoyed that the media keeps referring to Twilight as the next Harry Potter? I am a fan of both series', but they are completely different! To compare Twilight and Harry Potter just because they're both fantasty is to compare... the Pearl and Jane Eyre just because they're both classics. :P

Posted by chommy May 1st 2008

May 11th!!!! That's my birthday!

Posted by ALe_Av May 1st 2008

thats so sad :'(

Posted by rebel_hermionex7 May 1st 2008

How sad. *cries*. But we've had ten good years, and as long as we still love the books it won't matter what best-seller list they're on. And I get anooyed at the whole Twilight thing, too, lennyseberet.

Posted by WendyPotter May 1st 2008

THIS IS BAAAAAAD. :( Its a bad start; if the books start falling now, imagine in a couple of years... :S

Posted by slugclubgirl77 May 1st 2008

my birthdayy is todayy! yeaaa will anyway... i love the twilight series but i don't think its the new potter ...i mean no book (in my opinion) will ever match up to potter. i dont think this is the end of the harry potter era we still have the movies and the theme park...its still kind of depressing though =[

Posted by grednforge May 1st 2008

wow. that's kinda sad. that's really sad. It's like it's really over now.

Posted by merlins_pants May 1st 2008

oooh this is so depressing! But I know that Harry Potter will never slip away. It has made too much of an impact on too many lives. Once the encyclopdia comes out, I think it will be back to the way it should be. and the NYT best seller list will always only be the NYT best seller list. Harry Potter is legendary, and just because it isnt selling as much, doesnt mean its loved any less =)

Posted by pizzapple May 1st 2008

waaaaa i miss my harry potter!! it'll never die, guys! don't you worry :D

Posted by UK_Wildcat May 1st 2008

Okay, this is wonderful. I was Already depressed having been in the last track practice of the season and listening to all the seniors make speachs about how well we've done and all that...and I come home and read this. WONDERFUL day. :(

Posted by animagus_padfoot May 1st 2008

This is so sad but i guess it had to happen at some point. But everyone should go out and buy one of the Harry Potter books again in the next week so that it is up there again.

Posted by felixfelicis888 May 1st 2008

wow. what a long run!!!! thats very impressive. i would love for them to announce the total # of books sold. that would be impressive as well. HP is for life! it never dies!

Posted by ginmo May 1st 2008

I'm surprised that Deathly Hallows isn't still up on the list... but then again, people weren't as patient like the rest of us when it came to waiting for the series to end. A lot of fans gave up reading the series around book 4. I've heard that a lot from people I've talk to. They say stuff like "Yeah, I read up until book 3 or book 4 and just stopped." OR, it could be that every single person already owns them lol. Especially with the earlier books.

Posted by _petrificustotalus_ May 1st 2008

...Wow. It's really over. I'm going through withdrawal again. D: The books lived a long, glory-filled reign, but of course they'd quietly disappear from sight at some point... Knowing that doesn't make it any easier to accept this. I'm glad to have been a part of the Potter Generation, and I'm going to read the books to my kids someday. :) They're a fantastic, fantastic series, and they deserve literary immortality. On the Twlight-HP thing... I *love* both series, but HP will always be first in my heart... first because it's better, but second because it's a series I've grown up with and can never get tired of. I think one of the reasons that Twilight has been embraced as it has is that a chunk of mourning Potter fans have been looking for a new series to turn to.

Posted by tiassa May 1st 2008

twilight has yet to achieve 1/7 of a 1/7 of what Harry Potter has achieved. Whatever you think of the book you got to admit to that. It's succses is comparably VERY small and only in the USA. It has also won a lot less awards(even if it had less time to do so) and with very good reason. I live outside the USA and it took about 3 years after PS came out for the pottermania to hit here. although it doesnt has as many readers as in other places everyone here heard about it. If you say Twilight here to someone you'll get a blank face. Artemis Fowl is more heard of here then that(and if you knew how many people have heard of that one here you would have known what it means about twilight)

Posted by hpninjaskills May 1st 2008

AWWW, SAD! :(

Posted by SlytherinBabe May 1st 2008

how could they do this! gosh it make me so angry because that means that Harry Potter is one step closer to whats the word, disappearance? of course us devoted fans will read them to our kids and grandkids but i dunno. I still can't grasp that its over. Well Harry Potter will forever be in my heart so it will never die.

Posted by brunetteginny May 1st 2008

this is very sad. fandom lives on though!!!!! Hurry up with the scottish book jo and get back on there!!!!

Posted by TheDogStar12 May 1st 2008

That is really depressing. :( For the first time in a decade? :( Wow.

Posted by 2obsessed4u May 1st 2008

At first glance, this could be pretty bumming. But, the fact that we're commenting on it proves that this fandom, and the series' era (as the NYTimes calls it) is far from over! Just because people aren't buying the books at the moment doesn't mean that people don't remember them and aren't interested in them anymore. It just means that everyone has a copy that they will read and treasure, and pass on to their children. So why all the sad faces, guys? 10 years on the bestseller list is a darn good run.

Posted by hpfreak13 May 1st 2008

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Bah that ruined my day. Well also the fact that today is the 10th Anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts (Fred, Lupin, Tonks, Snape, Colin.....*sob*). I've already had commermorative services. The books WILL BE BACK, I TELL YOU!!!! Let's all go buy another HP and the Philosophers Stone so that it gets back on :D

Posted by hpintwense06 May 1st 2008

I was actually just looking at the USA Today's list of Best Sellers, and I couldn't even find Harry Potter. I mean yeah, it is sad that it's not on there anymore, but that doesn't mean it can't make a comeback. Plus - we all already have all the books anyways, and that is what matters.

Posted by hpwiz812 May 1st 2008

WHAT??? BLASPHEMY I SAY! BLASPHEMY!!!! still, 10 years is a pretty long time....

Posted by Jalien May 1st 2008

Oh, that's sad. ... but tiassa's comment made me feel better. ^^ It is an achievement afterall, and it doesn't need to be on a book list to live on forever.

Posted by SCPGOH_ad24 May 1st 2008

Has amazing as a decade is..this is really a sad moment.
