Potter leaves NYT Best-Seller List for First Time in a Decade
Potter leaves NYT Best-Seller List for First Time in a Decade Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone originally appeared on the New York Times Bestseller list back in December of 1998. The impact of Potter's popularity led the NYT to creating two new lists so other titles could make the list other than Jo's stories.

Now, almost ten years later, the May 11th edition of The Sunday New York Times will be free of any Potter novel. Check out the NYT's Book Blog for more.

Once JK Rowling's Potter Encyclopedia is released, we're sure Potter will make a comeback. Thanks to Pruneau for the tip!

Posted by angelina_johnson92 May 1st 2008

I can't believe that it's been 10 years! It sucks that they're taking it out. But Harry Potter isn't over yet. It will NEVER die out!

Posted by heronxobsessed74 May 1st 2008

I want to cry. Harry Potter is dying ... it's happening. It had to eventually, but so soon?! Before the movies are even all out?! This is soo depressing!

Posted by ferret_go_bounce May 1st 2008

This is a travesty :(

Posted by secrets_and_magic May 1st 2008

:( This is so sad. It hit me this would happen the night DH was released (I was depressed for weeks but then I chose not to think of it again and spent my time at Mugglenet to forget and concentrate on the Harry Potter that still existed. This is bringing back great, sad and horrible memories. :(

Posted by HPtears101 May 1st 2008

What in the world. That's not right.

Posted by GivrHellPeeves May 1st 2008

Hello, Me and a group of people are trying to get the word out that May 23 is Harry Potter day were people wear their Harry Potter stuff so were contacting anyone possible to help spred the word thank you.

Posted by alex_c98 May 1st 2008

This made me really sad when I got home... but then I read the comments on that article (after one bad comment) and everyone was saying such amazing things that I couldn't help but smile. This is THE fandom of all fandoms, really. We're the lucky ones who can say we were there when it all happened. And it's not over till it's over and we're all committed enough to the fandom for it not to die out on us. Not to mention, there's still the next generation to get hooked on the books... :)

Posted by Alas_Earwax May 1st 2008

wow.. I didn't even know it was on there the whole time..but now I'm sad to know it's gone :(

Posted by hotterpotter2000 May 1st 2008

OMG good job J.K! Ten years...that's an achievement. And yes, long live Harry Potter! and J.K as well! =p Btw, read the article thing, the first comment was from this guy named Peter who said that the Harry Potter series sucked and that children only read it because of hype! And if children didn't read Harry Potter, they would go back to video games. What a narrow minded looser!

Posted by Ginny May 1st 2008

nooooo! saad saaad SAD moment! I cant beleive hpow people forget so fast how extremely amazing these books are! ten years... wow... that a lot... tiassa, you made my day... well, night actually xD... LONG LIVE HP!

Posted by sillyme May 1st 2008

ok thats really sad! wtf just put it on, its bestseller no matter what some stupid list says!!!!!!!! haha. its still on my best (seller) list! but all good things must come to an end. we @ mugglenet will continue to celebrate this fabulous phenomenon whether or not its on some stupid list.

Posted by d0bbyr0cksmys0cks May 1st 2008

huh, weird, i thought i would be the only one who would have their heart broken about HP not being on the NYT BSL, but i'm not. =/. you know, i think that's why i love our fandom for what it is. another fandom would be like "meh, we had a good run." but us? we, like... mourn. lol. it's odd, but it's lovely. hmmmm, it's weird that this is announced a day before/the day of the 10 (?) year anniversary of the battle of hogwarts. it's like living the weekend july 21st all over again, but sadder. now that's odd. but on a happier note, 10 years on the NYT BSL? damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! that's quite an achievement Harry/Jo! so CONGRATS! xD WOOT! WOOT! and also, lennyseberet, i get SERIOUSLY annoyed at that too. HP FTW!

Posted by Emma_Granger_Rulz May 1st 2008

Posted by Emi_5 May 2nd 2008

wow...thats shocking!!! this is sad...oh my gosh!!! i just cant believe it!!! it kind of makes you realize that the series is really over... ON ANOTHER NOTE.....CHEER UP LADS!!! HARRY AND JO WILL BE ON IT AGAIN WHEN THE ENCYCLOPEDIA COMES OUT!!!!!!!!!

Posted by harry_potterdude May 2nd 2008

I was hit hard by this news.... how can such a good series end? but once the Harry Potter encyclopdia comes out, Jo will be back on top!

Posted by member_of_SPEW May 2nd 2008

This is kind of sad, but I'm not really surprised ... From what I understand of it, the NYT Bestseller list is just based on what books are SOLD, not what people like the best. And now that most everybody who wants one has their own copy of DH, of course other things are going to make the list - I'm kind of surprised it hadn't been off already. It makes me happy that we've made ourselves a record that's not likely to be broken any time soon. : )

Posted by REMiHEARTSRUPERT May 2nd 2008

Ah too bad welp nopw we have the encyclopedia to look foward too!

Posted by tjd8591 May 2nd 2008

That sucks... everyone go out and buy twelve copies of each book so he can make it back on the list. lol

Posted by kooldude10694 May 2nd 2008

this sucks. i was at borders today and saw hp copies in more places around the store. maybe they were trying to get it back onto the list.

Posted by Mattuk May 3rd 2008

Wow, over reactions or what? Sure, its dropped out but with 3 films coming out and the 'pedia' maybe coming, there'll be plenty more apperances by them in the lists yet. Once the Warner hype machine gets into gear it'll kick sales back up again. But come on...10 years is a hell of a long time in anything. Some sports men and womens careers sometimes dont last that long. To suddenly say its the end and its doom and gloom. Thats just a tad over the top. People should just look at the accomplishment that a series, despite all the idiots trying to shut it down, say its evil, say it promotes witch craft, managed to last as long as it did.

Posted by Rose37 May 3rd 2008

Thank you Mattuk 3 for those kind thoughtful, words of what I have been trying to say to everyone for the last 20 hours!!!

Posted by Mathilde May 3rd 2008

I am glad the hype is dying down, personally. The Harry Potter series has had its run, and it's high time that some other authors got the recognition they deserve. I actually haven't been very upset since the 'Potter' series ended; rather, I'm kind of happy that the world's still turning. This is just an indication that Harry Potter, like everything else, cannot remain popular forever... It was fun while it lasted. At least now we can enjoy the books and movies without the hype which, for some, anyway, made liking the books a bit of a hassle (this is not true of me, but I knew some people with this opinion). Okay, I'm through... :D

Posted by hermyweasley105150 May 3rd 2008

hey everyone on may 23 its harry potter day so in remembrance of everything harry and the other witches and wizards have done for us wear your harry potter stuff or anything like cloaks, robes, etc. Tell everyone thank you

Posted by Moaning_Myrtle May 3rd 2008

oh no! That's terrible X( I hope the books will go back on the list soon! AHHH ~Myrtle~

Posted by roomof_requirement May 3rd 2008

hey...ten years is a really looooong time...! Its still sad though, I guess :(...but this ISN'T (nooooooooooooooo) the end of Harry Potter...definitely not...

Posted by Spirit May 4th 2008

Wow, an entire DECADE? I didn't even know that. There is nothing to be sad about. That's a tremendous achievement that 99% of authors/aspiring authors can only dream of.
