Scholastic Reveals Sorcerer's Stone Anniversary Edition Digg the cover | Share on Facebook

This September marks the 10th anniversary of when Sorcerer's Stone was first released in the United States, and Scholastic is ready to celebrate! This morning they announced the Special Anniversary Edition which features a beautiful new cover illustrated by Mary GrandPre and "exclusive bonus material from J.K. Rowling."

There is a great quote from GrandPre in the press release as well:
“It's a real treat for me to get another chance to visually bring Harry back to his fans in not only a new scene, but in a new light. Going back to draw the first cover for the anniversary edition was an opportunity for me to show another side of Harry... a vulnerable side. Having come to know and love Harry the way we all have, after experiencing the whole series, I think we can appreciate him even more on an emotional level.”

The book will be released on September 23rd and will cost $30. Read the full press release at the link below!

UPDATE: Check out the back cover art right here on Scholastic's site. It depicts Hagrid making his way up to Hogwarts Castle via boat.

Press Release:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Special Anniversary Edition to be Released on

September 23, 2008 by Scholastic

Book Features Special Material by J.K. Rowling

And New Art by Mary Grandpré

New York, NY (May 20, 2008) -- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first book in J.K. Rowling’s phenomenally best-selling series, will be released in a special anniversary edition on September 23, 2008. The book, published by Scholastic, will feature exclusive bonus material from J.K. Rowling as well as new cover art and a four-color frontispiece by Mary Grandpré.

The special anniversary cover of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Scholastic/Arthur A. Levine; $30.00) depicts 11-year-old Harry looking into the Mirror of Erised, which Harry comes across in his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and learns that the mirror shows you what you most desire.

“It's a real treat for me to get another chance to visually bring Harry back to his fans in not only a new scene, but in a new light,” said American illustrator of the Harry Potter books, Mary Grandpré. “Going back to draw the first cover for the anniversary edition was an opportunity for me to show another side of Harry... a vulnerable side. Having come to know and love Harry the way we all have, after experiencing the whole series, I think we can appreciate him even more on an emotional level.”

Published in the United States in September 1998, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was praised by The New York Times as “… as funny, moving and impressive as the story behind the writing. [J.K. Rowling] had wizardry inside, and has soared beyond her modest muggle surroundings to achieve something quite special.” There are currently 28 million copies of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in print in the U.S. alone, and 375million copies of the seven books in the Harry Potter series have sold worldwide in 65 languages.

As awesome as that is. The orginals are always better no matter what.

Posted by peroxwhy_gen May 20th 2008

I'd love to have one! I wonder if they all will get their 10 year editions, or will Harry have been mostly forgotten then?

Posted by DUI_King May 20th 2008

Glad to see Scholastic still has ways of cashing in on HP. Just think, in 5 years they will have the 15th anniversary edition... ooohh i need that 1 as well lol. Nah im content with my first edition original copy.

Posted by narglelvr May 20th 2008

I can't wait to buy one. Things like this always make me happy because it is living proof that Harry will not be forgotten.

Posted by the_shrieking_snack May 20th 2008

This is highly devious! i want one now...What's with the "Aw, i'm English"? can't the English get the book??

Posted by BellatrixPotterandMyself May 20th 2008

The whole English thing is because we cannot buy the American editions here in the UK.

Posted by BlackKat May 20th 2008

Awww, I love it :)

Posted by Oriana May 20th 2008

Ebay.com and Amazon.com :)

Posted by Mully May 20th 2008

Is there a uk edition ten year anniversary book coming out??? I'm Irish but I'm going to Boston in October and I might get one.

Posted by the_shrieking_snack May 20th 2008

Ok, thank you, BellatrixPotterandMyself. Hmm...that doesn't seem fair at all....you should try eBay though... :)

Posted by tirno_alyanorno May 20th 2008

Is it just me, or ha anyone else noticed the lack of a scar?

Posted by mlc872 May 20th 2008

Why can't you buy the US book in the UK? I am in Florida and I purchased all the UK books through Amazon.co.uk with no problems so why can't you order the US ones from Amazon.com? Weird. Anyway, I love the new cover I wonder if the UK publisher is going to make a new edition also?

Posted by tgreenfield88 May 20th 2008

wow.....this is amazing!!! i hope they redo the covers for each of the books!

Posted by soof May 20th 2008

Aww, I love that cover. I hope she goes back and redoes all of them.

Posted by novuscrepusculum May 20th 2008

Bonus material? Imagine if it's a new chapter? It would be interesting to see some of the original book openings or something their as well - weren't their quite a few?

Posted by ashleyyosaurus May 20th 2008

Ooh, and Grandpr

Posted by namara87 May 20th 2008

That's cool, can't wait to get it. People outside the U.S...just go to Amazon.com I bought all the U.K. books through amazon.co.uk

Posted by bEtHyBoP13 May 20th 2008

The cover art is lovely!

Posted by Ameeface May 20th 2008

'Special material' had better be available in the UK, it's forserious not fair if we miss out ;/

Posted by sammi_2006 May 20th 2008

The cover art is amazing! I can't wait to see if they decide to re-draw all of the other covers as well. I can definately see the vulnerable side of Harry that Mary Grandpre is talking about. She did a wonderful job.

Posted by angelina_johnson92 May 20th 2008

Wow, the cover is really nice. I can't believe that it's been ten years! I was like almost 6 when it came out here in the U.S. Time really flies. To me, the new cover kind of reminds me that even though the series had ended, it doesn't mean that it's gonna over. Harry Potter will live on forever!!!!!!!! Woop Woop!

Posted by nigalef May 20th 2008

To the guy who noticed the missing scar, i think we're supposed to assume it's under his hair that's covering his forehead

Posted by DeathlyH May 20th 2008

I'm buying that! That is sooo awesomely sexy 11-year-old Harry. DH cover Harry and PoA movie Harry are the hottest though.

Posted by SlytherinBabe May 20th 2008

OMG i cannot wait!!!!SQUEE!!!!!!!!! The cover is awesome and a new scene? GREAT! I'm soo exicted! gawd so many things are happening AFTER the summer-i don't know how I'm going to make it! CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by jaimeh May 20th 2008

$30? Too steep for me. And to the person who commented.... 11 year old children are NOT sexy. That is just sick.

Posted by igpx7 May 20th 2008

is this going to be hard cover? or softcover?

Posted by DeathlyH May 20th 2008

No....Harry is sexy. HARRY. JAMES. POTTER. IS. SEXY.

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever May 20th 2008

Im waiting for the special edition 1-7 boxed set with corresponding covers ;)

Posted by kreacher888 May 20th 2008

definetly not a fan of the cover.....

Posted by Rose37 May 20th 2008

The book that started it all!!! Great idea!!! Let us now do this for all of the books in the series, please and thank you!!!

Posted by MagicMaker222 May 20th 2008

Should be interesting to say the least!

Posted by chommy May 20th 2008

$30!? Who'd pay that much for a book we already have that only has a new cover and some bonus!? I'd lower the cost.

Posted by soof May 20th 2008

Lol DeathlyH.

Posted by hpintwense06 May 20th 2008

Wow, that's really cool! I like the new artwork, and I can't wait to see what the bonus material from Jo will be?!?! Perhaps I'll buy it... yeah $30 is kind of steep even for a book, and what with gas prices being so high... but September being so far off, maybe I'll just save some money til then. =]

Posted by ashurlito May 20th 2008

darn it i live in canada and we get the english editions! darn IT! WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE ABOUT THE AMERICANS! cant they make an english one?

Posted by breedkneazles May 20th 2008

His scar is definitely there, if you use the magnifying glass on the scholastic site you can see the bottom part of it right square between his eyebrows in the reflection.

Posted by Kimstar060404 May 20th 2008

Seriously? $30 is expensive for a new cover and bonus material?! $10 set aside in June, July and August, plus $5 for tax the beginning half of September will get you the book. Also, the rising price of petrol could be a valid reason for what seems like a higher than usual cost. I personally think it will be well worth it.

Posted by Xanat May 20th 2008

I really love the work Mary GrandPre has done with Harry Potter, and this new cover is no exception. Who wouldn't want this for their collection? I'm totally getting it and 30 dollars is really not that big of a deal, especially since the official listing is usually higher than big chain stores like Barnes and Noble/Borders will actually sell if for. Books are expensive...thats just how it is.

Posted by SCPGOH_ad24 May 20th 2008

ten years....wow. The new cover looks great, I love Mary GrandPre's work in our beloved series.

Posted by BlacksFell May 20th 2008

Dude, that's awesome! I can't wait!

Posted by Esodes08 May 20th 2008

Four words: I love Mary GrandPre.

Posted by gryffindor_gal_714 May 20th 2008

I like this cover a lot, more than the original. I want it really bad!!! Can't wait tilll September:)

Posted by Abergoat May 20th 2008

I like it. The cover now looks more like the later American editions, and less random. Though the UK covers are still better.

Posted by honeydukes0209 May 20th 2008

It's so refreshing to see some new pics...my copies are about to fall apart...so yes, an excuse to get some new books! ^^
