Rowling pens Potter prequel to benefit charity
Rowling pens Potter prequel to benefit charity Reuters is reporting this evening that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has written an 800-word outline of a prequel to the series that will be auctioned off for charity on June 10 in London by Waterstones. This is the charity we told you about a few weeks ago.

The article goes to say that:

"The outline, which ends with the line 'From the prequel I am not working on -- but that was fun!' is one of 13 story outlines written for the auction by famed authors including new Bond writer Sebastian Faulks and Nobel laureate Doris Lessing."

The money raised will go to charities English PEN and Dyslexia Action.

AARRRGGHH!!!! I WANT IT NOW!! But if this is the story that Jo is writing that I heard about on MuggleCast, it will be available to the public in some time.

Posted by _Kettleburn_ May 28th 2008

Wait- so what exactly is it? Just an outline of what happened before the night of Lily and James's death? Perhaps the Severus/Lily story? Even as an outline, that would be a great thing to put on her site!

Posted by chaibabachai May 28th 2008

I hope whoever buys it will post it for everyone to be able to read. they would have the ORIGINAL copy so it wouldn't really hurt. or maybe JK can eventually publish this outline and Beedle the Bard for the general public to buy. doesn't have to be fancy or anything, just PLEASE LET US READ IT ALREADY!!

Posted by merrymarge May 28th 2008

Is it the outline that will be auctioned off or a book? Will this take the place of the encyclopedia she is supposed to be writing? It's funny how she said that she was thru with Harry and yet she isn't. I would like the Prequel and Beetle the Bard and the encyclopedia, and anything else that she wants to write. Go, Jo, go!

Posted by DeathlyHallows007 May 28th 2008

after the auction, the book will go up on the bloomsbury site on june 11th. Its gonna be available for the public to buy in august. soo excited!!!!!!

Posted by sillyme May 28th 2008

Posted by malteselover May 28th 2008

Posted by Jill_the_Impossible May 28th 2008

ooo! i cant wait to read this! i love how she's so involved with charities. jo is my hero.

Posted by shikonari May 28th 2008

While I'm happy with JKR writing more about Harry Potter... Didn't she say somewhere on her site that she would NEVER write a prequel? Something about HP =/= Star Wars? Or am I crazy?

Posted by DarkSoul May 28th 2008

well it says right there that shes not working on a prequel... she just wrote an outline of the would-be prequel for charity

Posted by DeathlyH May 28th 2008

OMG. This is EPIC. About as epic as the new Indiana Jones. No wait- this is even more epic. OMG JO PUBLISH IT IN AMERICA NAO!!!!!!

Posted by peroxwhy_gen May 28th 2008

It'd be nice to see it, like the Black Family Tree. Perhaps it'll wind up in the Encyclopedia.

Posted by DeathlyH May 28th 2008

More proof that JKR is God is right in this article.

Posted by SCPGOH_ad24 May 28th 2008

oh what a teaser that is! my dream would be to have a prequel...I would give so much to have JK Rowling write James and Lilys story

Posted by kristine_london May 28th 2008

Gah!! It's going to be auctioned again?!? Oh wellserr, I really hope someone worthy gets it...(Ahem, Amazon) But a prequel??!?! That's just awesome!

Posted by LoonyLuna127 May 28th 2008

SWEET! I just wish there was a way to read it...

Posted by randomchat May 28th 2008

Holy crap! Yes, I want to read about it!

Posted by MUHAHAHA May 28th 2008

i hope it's on the Maurauders.

Posted by PinkPixie16 May 28th 2008

I'm soooo excited!!! OMG!!!! This is just AMAZING...it's almost like an eight book...except not really!!!!!

Posted by DeathlyH May 28th 2008

I hope it's about Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Posted by alex_c98 May 28th 2008

Marauders!?!?!?! If only I could get my hands on that....

Posted by DeathlyH May 28th 2008

I'd pay a hefty sum for dat.

Posted by TheDogStar12 May 28th 2008

At first I thought she meant she wrote an 800-word prequel right on the postcard and it confused me greatly. XD I wanna see the outline though. Marauders, please? XD

Posted by hpintwense06 May 28th 2008

Whoa - a PREQUEL?? OMG! That's soooo awesome! =] And we can get it! We who cannot afford to bid on & buy something that expensive.... if i'm not mistaken... we get to buy it on those post card things later this summer! I'M PUMPED!

Posted by honeydukes0209 May 28th 2008

A prequel!! I hope the fans get to read it...Augh! So excited!

Posted by DUI_King May 28th 2008

this makes me think that shes considering writing a harry potter prequel, (note how she coyly ends the outline with the prequel i'm NOT writing..) it'd be very much like her to be doing just that. she doesn't need money, she just enjoys writing, however adamant she has been about not continuing in the HP world. I hope i'm right. oh and i need that outline... MOAR!!

Posted by sgarime1 May 28th 2008

I'm excited to read this pre-quil! Looking forward to it.

Posted by Rose37 May 28th 2008

So that means her book will be about before the series even started. In my opinion, J.K. Rowling should have written the big space lifted in the end of book seven. The 19 years later really is too long!!! What happen in between?

Posted by Cypresswhisker May 29th 2008

OMG YES!

Posted by frogoat May 29th 2008

Well, that's another thing I'll probably never be able to read, but I'm so happy she did it for charity. Genius! Sheer, wonderful genius!

Posted by AnyaMarcos May 29th 2008

Neat! I'll bet she ends up writing one. A prequel, that is. Note that she calls it "the outline to the prequel she is not working on". Not the prequel she is not going to write. She worded it so that she can still write prequels... she's just not working on one right now. It would be silly for her NOT to write at least one book set in the Marauders' Era, and right up to before Harry's parents die. She's got plenty of story left to tell.

Posted by tiassa May 29th 2008

nedless to say, but: I WANT IT!

Posted by almightytallestvoldy May 29th 2008

You know what? As more time goes on, the more JK makes me HATE charities. >_< . . . I used to be for them (and technically still am I suppose), but she keeps writing things exclusively for them, and it's going to drive me mad. Are WE ever going to be able to read this? And the Tales of Beedle the Bard? etc. Or are the loyal fans who have been reading these books and watching these movies, who aren't billionaires just not good enough for her? o_O

Posted by Kamion May 29th 2008

Rowling by now so mindset to control her created universe that she no longer write for the general millionswide public but for the happy and wealthy few? I always thought the period between ch 1 and ch 2 of Philosophers Stone was the most irreal part of the whole story: unless you believe that child abuse for ten years going unnoticed by the schoolnurse is standard. So elaborating that part is the last I was waiting for. stop fidling around in the name of charity, lady, and start the real work you keep dangling around, meaning your Encyclopedia.

Posted by Kamion May 29th 2008

@almightytallestvoldy 'E ar, 'Ear!

Posted by Noodles May 29th 2008

Does anyone even care anymore? It's not like we're benefitting or losing from this... It's just a bunch of stuff that's happening and won't make any changes in our lives... It's kinda silly Rowling giving everything to charity. Why bother calling it Harry Potter at all? No real fan is ever going to get to read it. May as well call it "Prologue of Generic Boy Wizard" or something... Ah well.

Posted by Sally7 May 29th 2008

people, people, people...why should she not give anything to charity? As a matter of fact, this prequel thing will be posted online after the auction. As in, WE get to read it too.

Posted by OhWicked1 May 29th 2008

By all means, Jo, keep on giving to charities! But . . . we poor fans are withering away without any new Potter. My opinion? She's going to realize how much she misses HP, cave, and write a full-length prequel after all. She won't be able to resist . . .
