Alivan's redwood wand sale for military families
Alivan's redwood wand sale for military families Alivan's, one of our longtime sponsors, will be donating five dollars from every Redwood wand sold to the American Red Cross. The money will be used for the purchase of phone cards for our military and their families. All you have to do to contribute is to purchase either Redwood wand versions (petite - regular) and Alivan's will handle the rest.

These phone cards are a huge need right now and they are extremely important to all of these families. 100 percent of the money raised goes directly to this cause and helps keep military families in touch!

Its just a company trying to play on the emotive image of the poor soldiers stuck in a horrible war zone, and using our emotions to make money out of us while giving a small amount of their profit away to the charity, in order to make more profit in the long run with the advertising and positive brand image, not to mention people buying wands that they wouldn't otherwise have bought. Personally, I'd rather give the entire cost of a wand to charity, than give only $5 with a purchase. Bah Humbug! Although it is a nice thought, I'm sure.

Posted by felixfelicis888 May 29th 2008

Alivan's is a great company and this is a great cause. Nice looking wand too! Maybe I'll get one.

I am a military family(my brother is a Marine) so this is good and I hope a lot a people help in this project.

Posted by niffler80 May 29th 2008

My husband is overseas right now! I must say that the thought is super, I'm very grateful for the good wishes sent by this charity effort. Now if we could just get the military to cooperate... Did you know they reprimand groups of soldiers who have collectively spent "too much time" on the phone with their families by simply turning off their accessible phones for several days?

Posted by tiassa May 30th 2008

this is a good cause and Ben made a post, so I'm happy

This is wonderful. When my father was overseas, in Afghanistan, the support and phone cards my family received was of great help and deep appreciation.

Posted by BlacksFell May 30th 2008

Hmm...I think i'll proabably get one. This sounds cool

Posted by Mattrixed May 30th 2008

What do you mean by "our military"? NOT EVERYONE WHO VISITS MUGGLENET IS AMERICAN. darn Jingoists.

Posted by Rose37 May 30th 2008

Why is it so big to be first with commentting on a topic? Why is it so big to be the top ten commentting on a topic? How far will people go to say that their comment (#?)? I just thought to ask, that is all!!! Anyways, I have cousins who are in the militry, but I am not about to send my money though the internet. I already send care packs to the soldiers! Also I already have two wands and finally I again am sorry for my aditude on this website. Now I see what you mean and alala that was so mean on what you said in your comment!!! I am soooooooooo sorry!!!

Posted by MagicMaker222 May 30th 2008

My Dad is in Iraq

Posted by MagicMaker222 May 30th 2008

so I can understand how important phone cards can be. But I think they should put the money toward care packages too. Dad told me it's 120 degrees over there right now. I wish I could sent all our troops water bottles and things to keep them cool in that blistering heat. Whoever it was complaining about how it's only $5 a wand, but hey every little bit helps support our troops!

Posted by rowi May 30th 2008

I really don't think that this is a great cause at all! Firstly, why -- it there was'nt this mega-stupid war going on, the soldiers could talk to their family members directly. With all that billions over billions of dollars that war has cost the US people already, is there not enough money left to pay the soldiers decently??? And secondly: Redwood of all kinds of wood! Doesn't this company know, that the Redwoods in California are killed off faster than they can grow? That there is only a tiny practional part left? When do men become sensible?

Posted by MagicMaker222 May 30th 2008

Oh ok ROWI- SAVE THE TREES BUT WHO CARES ABOUT THE SOLIDERS WHO WERE JUST TOSSED INTO A WAR THE WAS PROVOKED? Yes ofcourse they get paid and so do the contractors who got work from the war. Phone cards are expensive. I see you have never bought one and used it for overseas or out of the country calls. It's not cheap and like i said before every little bit helps.

Posted by Bamir May 30th 2008

Why would anyone donate money for a basic need that should be provided to the service personnel free of charge by the US military? Even forgetting the questionable legality of the war if the US cannot provide its forces with the ability to contact their worried families at home then maybe they can't afford to be fighting it at all. The arrogance, ignorance and incompetence of the US administration never ceases to amaze me.

Posted by HPALI May 30th 2008

Can't they just use skype.....and WTF phone cards are not expensive in anyway...I can buy 3 for

Posted by HPALI May 30th 2008

carrying on last comment....I can buy 3 for

Posted by HPALI May 30th 2008

look above....i know why this isn't working.....cont.... 8 pounds which give 15 pounds of credit allowing me to call the middle east for a few hours......this service should be provided for free by the government.......honestly donations for phone cards???

Posted by MagicMaker222 May 30th 2008

Ok yall look

Posted by MagicMaker222 May 30th 2008

Phone cards that are international with several hundred minutes on them are $50 a piece at Wal-Mart. They are used up pretty fast if they are used often. Why do some of you think this is not a good cause? It's just as some of the other things that have fund raisers. Yea I know that it's not fighting AIDS or helping raise breast cancer awareness but it is helping people to keep in better touch with families they may never see again.Don't talk about the U.S government like it's some sort of game and they are purposely trying to keep our troops form talking to there families. At all military basis in Iraq, etc. There are phones, computers, and the internet so any solider can contact there family thru email and things like that. But what you don't understand is that there are lines to wait in to use those things. Phone cards help people who have satellite phones talk cheaper and it doesn't charge the people who's house they call.

Posted by the_shrieking_snack May 30th 2008

@: rowi: That is one of the funniest things i've ever read. "Save the Redwoods!" The only people who care about Redwoods are Ewoks. The American troops fighting for our freedom are SO much more important then a downed Redwood........I mean, seriously, what has a Redwood ever done to make your life better?

Posted by HPALI May 30th 2008

darn i really didn't understand how expensive international calling cards are in the US.....In the UK they are very cheap.....I guess the UK is just better!! LOL...

Posted by MagicMaker222 May 30th 2008

well HPALI send me some phone cards so i send them to my Dad! lol But seriously there probably more expensive here because it'll actually over seas. In the U.K it's not overseas...maybe thats why i dunno

Posted by Rose37 May 30th 2008

Wait a moment here. I know this is off topic and I am sorry, but I want to make something care for some one who had posted earlyer. HPALI did you just say that THE UK IS BETTER THAN THE US, BECAUSE THE US IS WAY WAY WAY BETTER THAN THE UK!!!

Posted by rowi May 30th 2008

@the_shrieking_snack, are you in earnest? Do you really mean this freedom-fighting-c...?If so I do pity you most sincerely ... You know, your soldiers are only fighting in order to fill the wallet of Mr. Cheney, and to get the oil hidden in the desert sand in order to fill the wallet of Mr. Bush also. Pity that didn't work out as planned; and as a result we have the petrol prizes you can observe at every filling station. -- Concerning Redwood trees, they were there hundreds of years before us all, and in a matter of a few years mankind is able to destroy them all. Of course, they are not able to shoot human beings for you, whomever your paranoia might think worth of shooting ...

Posted by muggleborn23 May 30th 2008

wow, that's a really good cause. it's great that Alivan's is doing this :)

Posted by the_shrieking_snack May 30th 2008

@rowi: (in earnest) Do you realize that 7 years ago, some terrorists hijacked two planes and flew them into the World Trade Center buildings in New York City, killing HUNDREDS of innocent people and destroying HUNDREDS of families because they hate America? Not to mention a plane full of innocent people hijacked and crashed into a Pennsylvania field, and another hijacked plane flown into the Pentagon, killing LOTS of innocent people, every hear of that story? Maybe, possibly? Also, if you didn't notice, "those people" (aka American troops) are over fighting in foreign land so some tyrant doesn't come over to America and send you to a concentration-camp and make you work until you die. I will pray for your soul since i have a shrewd idea where its headed...sorry Mugglenet for the off-topicness. I'll stop trying to reason with brickwalls.

Posted by HPALI May 30th 2008

Rowi i agree with you about the trees, I mean comments like, "what has a Redwood ever done to make your life better?" from the_shrieking_snack is outrageous.....Why does nobody care about the environment any more.....without trees there would be no you or me...XD mugglenet Rocks

Posted by the_shrieking_snack May 30th 2008

its like caring more about your tv and couch than your mom or dad! but, wait, i forgot, its your "enviorment."

Posted by rowi May 30th 2008

@the_shrieking_snack, (thanks for the brickwall). Just tell me one more thing: Who is the better for it, after all that senseless killing in WTC and the planes, when 3000 more american soldiers are sacrificed in the iraq war? Whom does all the bloodshed among the iraq civil population avail. Are there any human lives to be regained? Was even any culprit punished by that featherbrained action, solely designed to fill the pockets of certain people. How long are you going to believe that bloodcurdling lies?
