Half-Blood Prince delayed until July 17th, 2009
Warner Brothers has just announced that Half-Blood Prince will be delayed. The film will instead be released on July 17th, 2009. From the press release:In making the announcement, Mr. Horn stated, “Our reasons for shifting ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers’ strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films—changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”

Press Release:
BURBANK, CA, August 14, 2008 – Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that it has moved back the release date of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. The sixth installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise will now open day-and-date domestically and in the major international markets on July 17, 2009. The announcement was made by Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros.
In making the announcement, Mr.
Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, confirmed, “The release date change does not alter the production schedule for this or future Harry Potter films. Post-production on ‘Half-Blood Prince’ was completed on time, and the studio’s release plans for the two-part ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ will not be affected by this change. We know Harry Potter fans are eagerly anticipating seeing the final chapters unfold onscreen. In fact, the good news for them is that the gap will now be shortened between ‘Half-Blood Prince’ and the first part of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’”
Commenting on the release date change for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” David Heyman, the producer of all the Harry Potter films, offered, “When Jeff Robinov explained the rationale behind moving the release date of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ to July 2009, it was immediately apparent that this offered us the potential to reach the widest possible audience. I am extremely proud of this latest film and of the work of David Yates and our incomparable cast; I believe we have developed and pushed the series further still. We are all looking forward to sharing it with Harry Potter fans around the world, even if we have to wait just a bit longer.”
David Yates, the director of both “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and who will also helm “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” added, “It has been a joy to work on ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.’ Dan, Rupert and Emma and all our returning young cast continue to blossom, and our new cast members bring fresh color and life to Hogwarts. Even as we put the finishing touches on this latest film, we are already beginning preparations on the final two films—we start filming in February—and I am excited to bring this remarkable series to the exciting and moving conclusion its loyal fans deserve.”
In “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Heyday Films production, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” David Yates, who directed last year’s summer blockbuster “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” returns to direct “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” David Heyman and David Barron are the producers, with Lionel Wigram serving as executive producer. Steve Kloves wrote the screenplay, based on the book by J.K. Rowling.
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are reprising their roles as young wizards Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The film also stars Jim Broadbent, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Timothy Spall, David Thewlis and Julie Walters. The cast also features David Bradley, Jessie Cave, Frank Dillane, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, Helen McCrory, Natalia Tena, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Bonnie Wright.
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I'm signing all the petitions, joining all the groups on facebook and yahoo and such. I suggest everyone else does the same. Its the absolute least we can do. Haha we will not go down without a fight. sorry for the strong words, as you can see I'm a tad upset.
I AM SO ANGRY I CANT EVEN BREATHE. I AM CRYING, I HAVE BEEN CRYING FOR A WHILE NOW. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO SAY. THIS SUCKS. I AM SOOOOOO ANGRY.
pffft. Sorry, but I don't think the boycott will work. Kinda like denying a starving man a delicious and plentiful banquet. The fans may be able to boycott for a few days, but you all know you'll be in that cinema at some point watching HBP.
Read between the lines: Either the movie needs work, or the economy is in the tubes and WB is afraid of not making a killing. They do not care about how many fans get MAD because all those "mad" fans will STILL go and see the movie in July anyways. Lastly, it is their product, and they can release it whenever they want to - they signed no contracts with the fans. Public outcry, fans, friends don't matter. Just the fact that the wallets will open just the same, or moreso, in July. It's a business, and they think with their shareholders alone. Who is REALLY alienated among the fans? We are MAD yes, DISRESPECTED and BUMMED OUT, but alienated to the point that we won't see it? No. I know, because I'm a sucker for HP too and I'll still go see it.

I wrote this very angry comment to Warner Bros. Enjoy: What. The. Hell. You CAN'T move the Harry Potter movie. That's false advertising! We have been waiting for over a year for it to come out and you even put out the teaser trailer. Saying it would be released in November. NOVEMBER. NOBODY is at all pleased with this outcome. There are enough Harry Potter fans that we could all BOYCOTT the rest of your movies if we wanted to and it would make a huge difference. You shouldn't be worried about money, because this is HARRY POTTER. You would make enough money by the November release anyway. If you think you're benefiting from the release date change, then you are severely mistaken. If anything, it is detrimental to your company and your consumers. Harry Potter already outstrips nearly all of your other movies. It would even it was released. More people would go see Harry Potter during a dew ICE AGE more than people see any other movie any other regular day. This is a MUCH bigger deal than you think it is. If you know anything about the film industry and the fandom, you will reconsider this DIRE mistake. Then again, if you knew anything, you wouldn't have made this mistake in the first place. Who cares about making a tiny bit more money. You're already filthy rich, you pigs.
screw u, wb.
this is the worst decision that they could have made. Honestly, the time of year might hurt other movies, but this is a HARRY POTTER movie for goodness sakes. everyone is going to watch it no matter if the temperature is 50 degrees or 102. this is just ridiculous. its a horrible decision. Making people wait this long is only going to create controversy.
lol @ boycotting. You will hurt youre local movie theatre more then WB, and if youre already going to see another movie you make absolutely no difference at all.
This is the dumbest thing I've heard in my whole life. can we say GREED?! the movie was ready. do they really think fewer people would go in november than would go NEXT JULY?! Yeah right. I'm seriously considering not going at all to see it in theaters at all. I don't think this movie will be worth the wait...
We have to make as big as an impact as we can boycott as many of these as you can http://en.wikipedia.org/w iki/List_of_assets_owned_ by_Time_Warner
No no nononono! This ruins everything! My birthday a week before November 21st! I already had my entire party planned! NO! Please tell me that this is just some sick joke by Warner Bros. *cries*
My heart hurts. I hate them--they're obviously just being greedy and should have made it a summer release in the first place if money was their intention. I'm so angry. It's the only thing I ever look forward to whenever I go back to school... *sniffle*

im crying...i think im going to bury myself and refuse to come out until they change the date back...EVERYBODY BURY THEMSELVES AND REFUSE TO COME OUT UNTIL THE DATE IS CHANGED
dobbys_friend--I agree with you. Now that I think about it, all along it seems that they were going to delay it. I mean, it was so weird that we didn't get ANYTHING the whole summer--barely any pictures, acting interviews, etc--and now it seems that they were holding back everything for a reason. Remember, the Nov. release date was made YEARS ago if I remember correctly--before the 5th movie and 7th book. A lot changes in a few years. And the gap between the 6th and 7th movie WAS going to be extremely long. I'm sure they didn't want to lose the fanbase during that two year gap. I can't wait to hear what Mugglecast has to say about this *hint hint*
Sign It if you haven't Already. http://www.petitionspot.c om/petitions/harrypotter6 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok I know my sn is GrangerLaughs but I SURE AS HELL AM NOT LAUGHING RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am livid!!!!!!! UGHHH! this was the ONLY thing i had to look forward to now. and UGHHHH *insert cuss wordss* I could avada kedavra! i'm so pissed. why did they have to go and do this. "there's sure to be lots of disappointing fans" oh believe me. that is the understatement of the CENTURY.
I'm so ticked! This is frikkin retarted! I can't believe this! "Windows of oppertunity?" Try a time where they're not gonna have to compete with Twilight being in theaters because they KNOW they're not gonna win. I love Harry Potter, and I'm particularly upset about this. Ugh. *shakes head in dissaproval* This is a sad, sad day.
shhh darn u WB wait im so lost this is about more money because WAKE UP IF THE WORLD WAS ENDING HARRY POTTER WOULD STILL MAKE A FREAKING FORTUNE IF WE WERE BEING BOMBED WE WOULD GO SEE HARRY POTTER BECAUSE WE WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE IT ONCE BEOFRE WE WERE KILLED IF THE MOVIE TEATHER GOT BOMBED AND fudge U HEYMAN i thought you were better than that i am so pissed WE SHOULD BOYCOTT opening weekend so that WB will lose money for revenge
AAAAHHHH! That makes me so ANGRY! WTF
What the crap are they thinking? This is idiculous! They're just looking for a good excuse with the writer's strike......filming has been done for a while people!!!! Can we all go to WB and protest?
BTW someone needs to update the counter for movie......its almost depressing to look at it cause it still says 98 days.... I HATE WB RIGHT NOW!!!!! OMG FREAKING BASTARDs FROM HELL!!!!!! THE MOVIE IS GONNA LEAK ANYWAYS SO NO ONE WILL EFFING GO WATCH IT!!!! THATS WHAT HAPPENs for being EFFING GREDDY BASTARDS!!!
We have to make a big impact go to wikipedia and look up "List of assets owned by Time Warner" then boycott as much of that as possible!!!!
lol guys, I haven't seen a news post get this many comments since the release of DH. This is incredible...I'm still fuming.
11 months. 11 long and endless months. WHY must they torment us so?! All the filiming is done! Like they need anymore money! This sucks. =_(
no way no way cant be im not waiting almost a year for it to come out wen it was meant to come out in 3 months! wb are stupid and pathetic i hate them harry potter and the half blood prince was the main thing i was looking forward to this year, now its outta the picture, 08 sux ass.
fudge fudge fudge fudge I AM OUTRAGED!!!! THIS IS A fudge STUPID ASS FUCKED UP PIECE OF shhh!!! fudge YOU WARNER BROS!!!!
CALL AND COMPLAIN: 818-954-1919 Also could some one pass on the link to the Facebook group?
Well this sucks. Maybe this is why it took so long to get a teaser trailer. Maybe they planned this all along....I guess I can take the widget off of my myspace page. I think it's crap to sit on this for 11 months more. I mean it's HARRY POTTER. It would make money no matter WHEN it's released. Is WB afraid they're going to go broke after the series is over? Is that why they're prolonging this? To make more money for a longet period of time? Ridiculous.....
Some people is not dissapointed, and they are crazy...IF WB PUSHED BACK HBP, THERES NOTHING THAT STOP THEM OF ALSO PUSHING BACK DH PART 1...AND 2
Ok guys, I registered for an account here just so I could comment on this issue. First of all forget about the online petitions. Online petitions never have and never will change anything, they are basically ignored by the world at large. No, the only way WB is going to release just how big a mistake they've made is by hitting them in their wallets. Now I don't mean a boycott because lets face it, we're all going to see this movie regardless. I know this, you know this, and most importantly WB knows this...thats why they've decided to make this move. So what I propose is this...don't go watch the movie in theaters...instead watch a bootleg copy online, trust me they will be available, maybe even before the release date since the movie is already done. I don't normally support piracy but this is only REAL weapon against WB for pulling off this incredibly greedy and stupid move. If enough of us choose to do this instead of watching in theaters they WILL see the error of their way.
We have to make a big impact go to wikipedia and look up "List of assets owned by Time Warner" then boycott as much of that as possible!!!!
Do you know what will be the worst? If this kills the HP franchise. I mean obviously pretty much everyone commenting here is pretty hardcore. But what about 'normal' fans? They've had to wait a year and a half for a movie without any book. Will they be over it? I don't want them to be over it *freaks out* OMGIHATEYOUWB
BOOOOOO BOOO! Man, we were so close too. Im so mad!
I wrote to those three Warner Bros people, something like this: "Warner Bros is making a mistake and must already be starting to feel it. Do you know how angry you are making your paying fans? I am not going to the cinema, I will borrow the DVD from some friend and that's it. I am also going to avoid all other WB movies for the rest of the year, and rest assured I will try and convince my friends to do the same."
im too weak to boycott. hp and the movies have me in a stranglehold
THEY DON'T NEED NO MORE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PUT IT BACK NOV. 21ST OR I AIN'T GOING TO WATCH IT AT ALL!!!

I saw this in the RGN news wire and thought it couldn't be true. I came here to check it out and... well it wasn't pretty. This news is so totally ridiculous that i actually thought to myself, is it April 1??? I signed that petition. I have gone past outraged into numb but i will say this - if they do not undo this decision, i refuse to see this film in theatres. The only reason they are doing it is to make more money and i refuse to support such a ridiculous notion. I am so dissapointed in you WB. How completely and entirely selfish. The worst bit is that the move is FINISHED! As THE Harry Potter website i figured that the WB would check out our responces to this news. I think everyone should respond telling them exactly what we feel.
Well, darn, this sucks. *sobs* Psh, they just don't want to compete with Twilight after Eclipse outsold Deathly Hallows.
Warner Brothers, do not be surprised if someone burns down your studio. I feel like I have no reason to live. Just kidding. But seriously, I am so FU**ING PISSED right now. Something is not right with this picture. They wait over a year to release the biggest film of the EVER after it has been filmed.
OMFG!!! HOW CAN THEY DO THIS! THIS IS THE WORST POSSIBLE THING TO EVER HAPPEN!!!!! ARGGGGGGG! TOTALLY RUINED MY ENTIRE YEAR!!!!!!! So now i'm going to go all hp emo and cast sectumsempra on myself in peace while I cry!!!!! :'(
Has anyone put together some kind of "Email WB" plan? We need to flood their inbox, voicemail, mailbox, doorstep, whatever and let them know that we DEMAND they release the movie on-time, as scheduled in November. See they, think just because "The Dark Knight" did phenomenally they can put Harry off to the side... what they've forgotten is that WE kept them afloat when all their other movies were bombing... they just want some guarantee that they'll have a profitable 2009 the greedy sods.... BOYCOTT!!! PETITION!!! I say we support nothing WB related until they succumb to our demands!! They're nothing without consumers!!!
GUYS, THE ONLY REASON THEY'VE POSTPONED IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF MONETARY REASONS, IT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE SCARED TWILIGHT WILL BEAT THEM AND STEAL THE CROWDS AWAY! THE MONEY IS JUST AN EXCUSE!! WB ARE COWARDS!!!!!!
I AM SOOOO NOT HAPY ABOUT THIS!!! It totally messes with my fall, something I planned AROUND the HBP release date!
It may not do any good but I am writing to them all expressing my extreme displeasure and anger, and informing them that I will not be attending the midnight premier as I had planned and will boycott the movies opening weekend despite seeing every one opening day. I join everyone else though in their anger of doing this just for money
I don't believe for a second their reason for the delay. They grossly underestimate the very bad PR this will cause. Let's boycott WB merchandise - don't buy Harry Potter or any other WB merchandise!! And if WB sticks to the delayed release date, then let's boycott the opening!! By then, we will have waited 11 months, we can wait a bit longer to make our disgust known!!! (And yes, I've never seen so many posts go up so fast either!! Are you LISTENING WB??????)
