Warner Brothers has just announced that Half-Blood Prince will be delayed. The film will instead be released on July 17th, 2009. From the press release:
In making the announcement, Mr. Horn stated, “Our reasons for shifting ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers’ strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films—changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”

Here I was, daydreaming of how much fun it would be to go see HBP right at the end of my next semester at college and use it to wind down a little. But now I have to wait until the summer! I am in full anger mode, I already had tickets to go to Europe for the British and French premiere.
** what doesnt make sense is that Christmas movies also break box offices. Plus Harry Potter already has probably the largest fan base who would go and see it even if it was released in the middle of October or some random month. Plus 11 months is kind of rediculous, so much has changed.

HBP strikes me as a better summer movie than a winter movie anyway. Just as DH will make a better winter movie. So while the last four movies were probably all released in the wrong season, the next two will have a better fit between the time of their release and the tone of the film.
And it just works out that the very last film, with its Paschal themes, should work well as a spring release.
I have plenty to do for the next 11 months, so this is no big deal for me.

I am emailing like probably thousands to complain to you. And while I understand you are simply doing your job I as a movie goer must make my voice heard. I think it is disgusting that Warner Brothers are delaying the release of a FINISHED film for over 10 months, TO LINE THEIR OWN POCKETS. Because thats what it is about, it was all their in the press release.
The problem is that by releasing it 11 months later they are seriously alienating the majority of the audience who go to see the potter films. And potentionally thus reducing your profits. Why does a multi million dollar company need to worry that they wont make as much money in 2009. Hey because its not like they dont make enough anyway right?

Scandal, there is obviously something going on here, something wrong with the film!
And not once in that statement was JK Rowling mentioned at all, I wander how she feels! What we need is something really powerful to send to the studios and hope for the best, absolutely appalled!

Like they werent going to make a ton of money off it already.
Lets just delay it and hope that the anticipation will make more people go see the movie and spend more money, rather than keeping their fanbase happy and releasing it this year.

Everyone needs to READ the press release, as a few people have already stated. They will not be using the near YEAR before the new release to make it a better film. They plainly said they are putting the final touches on it now and it is just about finished.
With that being said, they may as well have come out and said flat out "HEY, WE WANT THAT EXTRA FEW MILLION BECAUSE OUR EXECS ONLY HAVE THREE MANSIONS AND 10 CARS, THATS NOT NEARLY ENOUGH." Because this makes it more than obvious that is the only reason for this. Yet they try and sugar coat it by saying "the widest audience possible."
I really wish there *was* some way for the fans to strike back, but nothing will work. The only thing that would would be for a HUGE number of people to not go see the film and/or get pirated versions, but that will never happen. As they know very well that the fans will go see it anyway. Sadly they are right. So they will continue to screw us for their own gain because they dont care one bit.

I am a big fan and I felt the fifth movie was the worst movie ever. It steered so far away from the books. All u guys said "what a cool movie" etc, etc... Dumbasses!!! I cannot believe they didnt choose another director! They could have called back Alfonso: he even said that he would like to make the final book. Oh God! I just hate the director! I hate WB!!!!! They cant even give us a great reason!!! I believe that my views on this matter reflect that of the two primary ones amongst Harry Potter fans. They are prolonging the release eight months, that is eight months that the film will just sit, doing nothing. Is that really sensible? Their motive just does not seem sensible enough to support their actions. Do they honestly think the time of the movies release will affect its audience this late in the game? Its the second to last movie (if you count DH parts I and II as one entity) and the fans are more loyal than ever as we struggle to keep the fandom alive. There are die hard fans, like myself and everyone responding to this comment, who will go to the midnight release and see the movie no matter the time! Having DH Part I immediately after HBP (one or two months, if Im correct) just doesnt compare to have a reasonable wait between OOTP and HBP with a reasonable wait between HBP and DH Part I. As I stated before, their reason for prolonging this movie an astonishing eight months just does not make it reasonable. WB is making a foolish and selfish move, in my opinion, as the withhold the film from their loyal and diehard fans just for the possibility (no matter how small) of increasing their profits, despite by how little.

how hard is it to write a harry potter movie.
i would have written the script for free during the writers strike if it meant the movie would be released earlier.
it doesnt take much to write a script thats basic plot has already been created in the books.

I am very upset about this. When I first read the news, I was utterly shocked and thought I misread it and they were talking about Deathly Hallows or something....alas, I did not misread.
It does seem very, very selfish for them to push it back that long and although I *can* wait till July, I *really* dont want to. My mother and I were driving home before I read the news and we drove past the movie theatre. I said, "I guess the next time Ill be in this theatre is in November when I see Half Blood Prince!" Then I get home...I guess I jinxed it. -_-

You have very recently announced that the HBP movie release date has been movie to July 17th and in doing so alienated an extremely large and significant portion of the fanbase. Harry Potter fans are very loyal and determined fans and we WILL see that movie no matter when it is released. We would all go see it opening day even if that was Christmas! The fanbase is VERY displeased with you, if you do not believe me ( or the hundreds of other emails you are likely receiving ) then go and check the comments on sites like Mugglenet.com about this decision at this link, http://www.mugglenet.com/ app/news/show/1810. It is not the release date that made OOTP high grossing, it was the growing fanbase and increased interest in the films as they grow more mature and the fact that OOTP came out near Deathly Hallows so the fans were in a frenzy. Fans such as myself have been counting down to the November release for an extended period of time and some are talking of strikes and rallies now that this has been announced. I urge Warner Brothers to reconsider this release date, and if they do not want to revert to the original date, then at least make it something more reasonable like December. I for one, am not going to see this movie as many times if it comes out in the summer when I am busy and gone on vacations. Please reconsider this date, you are not building suspense, you are building rage.

This is absolutely ridiculous...they have already finished filming the movie, and its not as if they can go back and film additional scenes to "correct" their supposed "mistakes" (ahem). Do you know how much money that would cost, not to mention change the schedules of everyone involved in the production?
The addition of or changes to visual effects will only cost more money, and so the most they would be able to do to the film in post production (which they are clearly in now) and SHOULD be nearing completion) is edit the darn thing....which does NOT by any means take eleven months to do.
And I dont care what WB itself or its supporters have to say on the matter...there is no reason whatsoever that the film is being pushed back so far except for financial gain on the companys part. A few months is perfectly acceptable, but eleven months? Come on, WB...are you kidding? Were not that dense; we see through your reasoning.

Its very eas for Warner Bros to postpone it since they have already seen the complete and final version. The movie was finished completely on July 29 but now its just going to rot for a year. I cant believe it!!!! Maybe they are thinking that its too much competition with Twilight and Dark knight coming out so close...this is making me want to stop being a harry potter fan. .. but I love harry potter so much. they probably messed something up in the movie. well since us fans have to wait so long just for the movie, it better be good. BTW, I dont think that petitions will change WBs mind. they arent gonna change the date and I know that for sure. Its marketing by WB in order to get as much of the spot light for the movie that it can. Why do I say that? Because the "Twilight" movie is going to be released around the same time (some places say Nov. 12th others say Dec. 12th) but either way, its competition for HBP - REGARDLESS what any of us say here, the Twilight series HAS gotten huge. WB knows this, they arent stupid, they see the chaos that ensued a couple of weeks ago with the release of the last book in the Twilight series. They dont want their movie on HBP to compete with Twilights first movie. Way around that - release the movie 8 months afterward. End of story. The greatest of dark human emotions - greed. And no, they (WB) really dont care what we think about this latest decision.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Heavens Gate! Someone with stroke saw the final cut (maybe JKR) and had a fit. HPB probably needs a major reshooting and a total re-editing. Hopefully, Yates will get the boot on Deathly Hallows and good riddance. I sat though Order of the Phoenix wondering how my contacts got so dirty and asking why the director was in such a rush to get me out of the theater. I saw the teaser for HBP and thought: here we go again.

I cant believe theyd dare to delay a HP movie for SO long when SO many millions of fanatics are anticipating its release! This SUCKS! It was due out in December in Australia and I already had two viewings completely planned (including a trip to the other side of the country to see it at IMAX). GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! The Dark Knight already made so much money this year that they dont need Harry Potter (their usual money maker) to bring in the cash. If WB think they are going to make mroe money by waiting until the summer, they are delusional. If they wait until July I wont pay a cent. Ill find some other way to see it. Theyre not going to drag me along for the ride.
I dont think the whole summer-movies-make-more-m oney should even count as a valid excuse because everyone is already going to see the movie anyway. The Harry Potter movies make an unbelievable amount of money in theaters REGARDLESS of when the movie is released! Not to mention that... come on, EIGHT months? They pushed it back EIGHT months further? Seriously, WB cant expect us to believe that they need eight more months to finish the movie when theyve already been done filming for, like, 2 months. How could the movie take 14 months to edit? What can you possibly do with 14 months?
Personally I think (and hope) this ploy will backfire in WBs face. I think they are pissing off a dedicated fan base and that they will lose some respect for it. Clearly... I mean, look at the responses this story has gotten!!!! Just to spite them Im very much thinking about not paying a cent if its not released until July. Here is the deal, I am not shocked at the fact that they changed the date.
What I am shocked at is how they are openly admitting that this is a MONEY decision to take advantage of us fans. While saying I wont see it is a over statement I will say I wont see this 4 times like I did with OotP.
There is absolutely no reason for this move, I hope it bombs on them, seriously I do, this is a disguating greedy act, the movie finied filming 6 months ago, so we know it isnt a time issue.
Really, we should blame Batman, the success of it not only makes them want another summer blockbuster next year but it means they dont need Harry Potter to meet there expectations for the year as TDK covered what both Batman Begins and HBP will.
First they told us that we get two DH movies for story purposes, and now they think that putting this in the summer is going to get them more money, PoA didnt do too well in he summer did it?
I can not suport a company and a project that has openy admited that its sole existance is for the money, Ill see it once and Im done.

I see many people feel that this is possibly a joke being played by the wonderful people at MuggleNet. Sadly I have looked at the Warner Bros site and it is announced there as well. It is indeed a very sad thing to have made this change, especially when at last report the film is actually complete. I would have found it more understanding if they needed the extra time to complete post-production. Sadly it proves that Warner Bros is more about making money than keeping the fans happy. But as they point out...less of a space between HBP and DH releases.
I wonder if WB realizes that not only are they affecting the fans, but also other businesses, because I would assume that now EA Games must delay the release of their game as to not spoil the movie.

I agree with jedi_anegram! Show them how many harry potter fans are upset by this by boycotting every WB movie between now and July 17th...then lets show them how much money they missed out on by making that the biggest release ever!

I think WB has gotten caught up in all the online talk of a competition between "Half-Blood Prince" and the "Twilight" movie with release dates so close. They are waiting until July so they dont have to compete with another franchise with a large fandom. WB are a bunch of wusses! Harry Potter can hold its own without moving the release date!

I think I am going to cry. Weve already waited over a year and now theyre saying were going to have to wait two years in total (now only 11 more months, but still...)! Ive been anticipating this movie ever since the last one ended. You cant run a teaser trailer then decide suddenly to go back on your word. Im not an expert, but I believe the writers strike would have had an effect on the holiday market as well...I could see them reasonably pushing it back to Christmas, but July of 2009 is way too far away. Bad choice, Warner Bros.

I almost went on the tour to New York in November. The one with the play and opening night of HBP. Im kind of glad I didnt sing up now... Ill just go to NYC with my friends to catch the play and will download HBP next summer... I live in a country where that is still legal :) Stupid, greedy WB.

You guys going to be even more pissed when you have to wait almost 2 years to get you DH part 1 and 2 on one dvd, since its a story decision only and that the concern was that most people wouldnt sit through a 4 hour movie, I see no reason why we shouldnt get part 1 and 2 on one dvd, except for that one thing WB cares about and thats money, we will get part 1 and 2 seperatley and then when the sales die down, they will release them as 1.
Jo is a sell out for even allowing that to happen. Just like she is by letting WB say the reason this move is happening is to make 2 million dollars more then they would have in November.

I am so upset right now! I can hardly stand it. Has anyone from mugglenet postee a response to this yet? I have scanned through some ot the posts, but not all 432 of them. If WB wants to take advantage of the "special" weekend, why not push the first installment of DH? this this simply wrong, and will dramatically hurt the entire HP enterprises. Dragging the movies out so far after the final book, is not the smart thing to do. DH will get a huge boost with the opening of the Harry Potter world at Universal Studios! I dont know who is doing their decision making, but this was not done by a genius of economics, or the "arts" How long do they thing the trio or other actors are going to hand around to complete this huge project? Then they will really have nothing on their hands when they start loosing the cast. Replacing Dumbledore squeeked by because of circumstance. But fans will turn on them for taking advantage of our JK and HP loyalties. they never really got it, it was always the books! The movies were a wonder additon and distraction while we waited for the next book! I love the actors, all of them, but that is the truth.

This just shows the stupidity of the WB. The last book and movie came out over a year ago. Many people think that the Harry Potter phenomenon is already over. They could still catch the tail end of the hype if they released the movie in November. However, if these reports are true, the next movie will come out two years after the last big Harry Potter releases. Cant the WB see that theyre digging their own grave?

GEEZ! My initial reaction was, "No way. This has to be a joke." At first, I deluded myself into thinking it was April first and mugglenet was making a little joke. Then I snapped back to reality and almost cried.
If they had to postpone it, couldnt they have made it around christmas time? My family goes to the movies the day after christmas every year! I mean, think: All the little children are out of school, a lot of people arent working, its just as good as summer!
UGH! I was looking forward to that! If it werent for the fact I get to go to Chicago, this would be the worst year of my life! If theyd released the movie when they said they would, it mightve been on DVD for my birthday! UGH!!!! I love getting HP stuff for my birthday! I am very, very upset.

If you think Mugglenet or Leaky is going to take a firm stance against this then you guys are blind, they are puppets of WB.
They will tell you on the Podcast that although they are disapointed, they see exactly what WB is talking about and think its the right thing.
I wouldnt expect to see either site try and pressure WB into changing there mind, after all, both sites have huge HP fandom and instead of trying to get there own site to reach the fans, they use MN and LC as the platform to you, and with trips to the sets on the line, dont expect either site to try and hurt that relationship, they rather compromise with us then them, Wish I was getting paid a grand to work on these sites but no I gotta work hard for my money.
