Half-Blood Prince delayed until July 17th, 2009
Half-Blood Prince delayed until July 17th, 2009 Warner Brothers has just announced that Half-Blood Prince will be delayed. The film will instead be released on July 17th, 2009. From the press release:

In making the announcement, Mr. Horn stated, “Our reasons for shifting ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers’ strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films—changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”

Press Release:
BURBANK, CA, August 14, 2008 – Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that it has moved back the release date of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. The sixth installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise will now open day-and-date domestically and in the major international markets on July 17, 2009. The announcement was made by Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros.

Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, confirmed, “The release date change does not alter the production schedule for this or future Harry Potter films. Post-production on ‘Half-Blood Prince’ was completed on time, and the studio’s release plans for the two-part ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ will not be affected by this change. We know Harry Potter fans are eagerly anticipating seeing the final chapters unfold onscreen. In fact, the good news for them is that the gap will now be shortened between ‘Half-Blood Prince’ and the first part of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’”

Commenting on the release date change for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” David Heyman, the producer of all the Harry Potter films, offered, “When Jeff Robinov explained the rationale behind moving the release date of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ to July 2009, it was immediately apparent that this offered us the potential to reach the widest possible audience. I am extremely proud of this latest film and of the work of David Yates and our incomparable cast; I believe we have developed and pushed the series further still. We are all looking forward to sharing it with Harry Potter fans around the world, even if we have to wait just a bit longer.”

David Yates, the director of both “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and who will also helm “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” added, “It has been a joy to work on ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.’ Dan, Rupert and Emma and all our returning young cast continue to blossom, and our new cast members bring fresh color and life to Hogwarts. Even as we put the finishing touches on this latest film, we are already beginning preparations on the final two films—we start filming in February—and I am excited to bring this remarkable series to the exciting and moving conclusion its loyal fans deserve.”

In “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Heyday Films production, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” David Yates, who directed last year’s summer blockbuster “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” returns to direct “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” David Heyman and David Barron are the producers, with Lionel Wigram serving as executive producer. Steve Kloves wrote the screenplay, based on the book by J.K. Rowling.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are reprising their roles as young wizards Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The film also stars Jim Broadbent, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Timothy Spall, David Thewlis and Julie Walters. The cast also features David Bradley, Jessie Cave, Frank Dillane, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, Helen McCrory, Natalia Tena, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Bonnie Wright.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I stil can't comprehend this bullsh*t!!! i mean seriously 11 months!!! i'm so sick right now. And the new pictures look so good too. it just makes things even worse. I mean the unbreakable vow scene is in there and so much other stuff, but it just makes me sick because we have to wait a WHOLE YEAR to see it!!

Posted by crispyo Aug 15th 2008

it's still painful looking at the word "July 17th, 2009" and then only a few posts under seeing all the release dates they had for november.. WWHHYYYYYYY YYYYY??????????????????

Posted by marisa4231 Aug 15th 2008

This is a huge slap in the face! They have garantied November 21 as a relise date for over a YEAR. A YEAR and suddenly someone says lets keep it to July 17! And the same day someone came up with that idea the day it was done. WB is makeing the biggest mistake ever. I laugh at the fact how stupid they are, and there strtegy wow! So they think the summer will make more money? Previouse records show that the Movie Prisinor of askaban wich was relised in the summer made the least out of all the other movies. This makes no sence. You would think a multi million dollor companie wont be the stupid, that they would actually get there facts right. I think the real reason that they are doing this is eas 1) They have made enough money with the Dark Night 2) They have no other films coming out in the summer 3) they are scared to comete with Twilight 4) They are dum fags that dont know a think about marketing eather way i nearly cried when i heard this new, I screamed, I pulled my hair almost out of my skull AND I AM SO F*CKEN PISSED AT THEM here is a link to a petition that i think every single person that doesnt agree with this STUPID CHANGE OF DATE should signe it takes 2 minouts and its free come on STAND UP http://www.petition spot.com/petitions/harryp otter6

Posted by jakesever Aug 15th 2008

And to think we all had WB's back when they split the last book into 2 movies. "No, they aren't doing it for money, they just want to make it the best it can be." Well...looks like we can all call BS on that now. And if they think they are going to somehow make more money by making us wait an extra 8 months...then they are idiots. If the movie is completely finished as of now, someone from within the company is going to sneak a copy out before July, and it will be bootlegged all over the internet. Good going WB, you have officially lost all my respect.

Posted by marisa4231 Aug 15th 2008

I am still hoping hoping at the distant thought that this might just be a joke, that they might just be doing this to get hype up to get some attention im hoping for the best! BUT THIS STILL SUCKS A$$

The producers actually "think" (they can think? huh-hu!) that delaying the movie would be getting more audience? That's the reason??? I hate Warner Bros for today and for 8 months, I hate David Heyman, I hate David Yates, and if Jo, the person that talks about the equalities between children at the every book release doesn't make any rejection, I'll be hating her too (sorry Jo!). That's how the "capitalist" world rules us people, get used to it. And they even make the writers strike as a reason for this delay - what a stupid thing is it? The strike has been over for months! Aaand, HBP production had begun "before" the strike and now HBP is "ready" actually, they don't deny it. I hope lots of fans that write on this site mails back to Warner Bros about their rights as an audience and this idiotic plan of delaying, and I hope same fans won't be going to the movie in it's first week. Really pity job WB and David Heyman does...

Posted by Kid_A Aug 15th 2008

Guys, are there any website or blog that we can sign in order to protest this delay decision and push the movie back to November 2008? I mean, I'm still very angry at the news and I feel myself as I "have to" do something about it. Please neither you stop protesting this!

i am in total shock. this reeks of a hoax, but tragically my gut tells me its for real. this is ridiculous. this will alienate so many fans. i predict (and hope) that considering it's finished and just lying around at wb that someone manages to leak it onto the internet and we'll all watch it for free and boycott them in the cinemas. that'll learn em!

I DON'T HAVE THE WORDS TO FULLY EXPRESS HOW EFFIN PISSED I AM! WB, YOU HAVE LOST SOOOO MUCH OF MY RESPECT! YOU'RE EFFIN STUPID. I HOPE VOLDERMORT KILLS YOUR PARENTS....

Posted by ekspresis Aug 15th 2008

great....I can't believe that this made me so sad.

Posted by lovermadly Aug 15th 2008

So, I asked my friend Jake about this whole thing because he runs a movie theater &he made some calls... From what he told me, this whole thing about the writer's strike is just a cover story... What's really going down is that DreamWorks paid off WB to push back the release. Madagascar 2 comes out two weeks before HBP was supposed to... They are both IMAX films, meaning that Mad2 would only get two weeks in the IMAX. DreamWorks apparently has signed some huge contract with IMAX, so that is where all of their money comes from now... WB being the money grubbing jerks they are, took the pay off &are now pushing back the movie... :( This is all so sad.

Posted by Luinwe Aug 15th 2008

How DARE They even THINK ABOUT IT LET ALONE ACTUALLY DO IT!!!!!! tHIS IS WRONG.... REALLY-REALLY WRONG.... i'VE WAITED ALMOST A YEAR TO SEE IT NOW TURNS OUT THAT I HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER YEAR!!!!?!?! THATS SIMPLY NOT FAIR, this is murder....

Posted by GIngERnuTs_RoX Aug 15th 2008

And to think i was angry because we were getting it in Decemeber, Australia better get it July 17th with everyone else or I may just commit genocide grrrrrrr :|

Posted by shortpower24 Aug 15th 2008

Am I the only person happy about this? I was so relieved when I saw that it was pushed back to summer. The reason is that I'm at college in the middle of nowhere with no movie theater in town, and no car. I was not looking forward to making arangements for someone to pick me up and drive me an hour and a half home to go to a theater for opening night on a school night. Now, I'll be able to relax and enjoy the midnight release at my favorite movie theater. I can see how having a longer wait can be upsetting, but I'm also glad that the whole thing won't be over so soon anymore. I couldn't wait for DH, but after I finished it, I was so sad it was over, and thought I'd have gladly waited a few extra years between books so it didn't have to end so soon.

Posted by Hermowninny Aug 15th 2008

Wow, no way! I seriously thought it was some sort of joke--guess not. Well... at least it'll be a nice graduation gift for me.

Posted by Spirit Aug 15th 2008

Um, WB, this makes no sense. I'm pretty sure the HBP movie would make PLENTY of movie on the original release date.... And if you're worried about it not making enough, you could have scheduled the opening day for... you know... something like... THANKSGIVING DAY.... Those movies make so much! And OotP didn't make that much money because it was released during the summer... it made that much money because the HP fandom steadily grows, and because it was the WEEK BEFORE the Pottercocalypse. It was HP SUMMER. Morons.

Posted by libster Aug 15th 2008

wtf. i am so pissed right now. it was bad enough having to wait for 3 months let alone almost another year. this is friggin gay as man.

Posted by novuscrepusculum Aug 15th 2008

Stupid, stupid WB. They should have just announced the release date for July when they started, instead of putting is as November when they knew they wouldn't make money. Now they're going to have THOUSANDS of angry fans giving them furious feedback, loads of petitions demanding the release date, and even boycotting. If I was Yates or Heyman, I'd be pissed. Your work is finished, and it has to sit in studios for another year? If someone leaks it onto a pirate copy (which wouldn't surpise me really) I think most people would watch itthen instead of waiting until July. Besides, let's face it: If WB had marketed this film properly like TDK or to a lesser extent Goblet Of Fire, then it could make lots of money still.

Posted by FredWeasley553 Aug 15th 2008

except instead of fudge, its the actual word. mugglenet changed it, obviously

Posted by EmmelineRiddle Aug 15th 2008

I'm absolutly crushed. My 21st Birthday is on the 24th Nov this year, and my boyfriend was taking me to see the big premiere-red-carpet jazz in London for my present! I'm too down to even be angry...

Posted by artemis_26 Aug 15th 2008

the worst thing... I always check mugglenet when I get to work. THis was the first thing I read online this morning. I so needed a box of tissues. I'm just glad my coworker understands my "Harry Potter issues".

WB i have 1 question. WHY IN THE HOLY HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT? IT'S NOT LIKE WE'RE GOING TO LIKE IT ANY LESS BY SEEING IT IN NOVEMBER!!! HELLO WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! I wonder if there is enough of a negative responce they'll change it back.

Posted by BaybeeBethy Aug 15th 2008

Well done, WB, you managed to upset about half the population in one day! You must be SO proud! Have a cheese stick on me! I hope you choke on it.

Posted by novuscrepusculum Aug 15th 2008

LOL. I just had a thought. EA are gonna be pissed at WB, they just released their second trailer for the HBP game. They're going to have to push back their release as well no.
