Half-Blood Prince delayed until July 17th, 2009
Warner Brothers has just announced that Half-Blood Prince will be delayed. The film will instead be released on July 17th, 2009. From the press release:In making the announcement, Mr. Horn stated, “Our reasons for shifting ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers’ strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films—changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”

Press Release:
BURBANK, CA, August 14, 2008 – Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that it has moved back the release date of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. The sixth installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise will now open day-and-date domestically and in the major international markets on July 17, 2009. The announcement was made by Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros.
In making the announcement, Mr.
Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, confirmed, “The release date change does not alter the production schedule for this or future Harry Potter films. Post-production on ‘Half-Blood Prince’ was completed on time, and the studio’s release plans for the two-part ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ will not be affected by this change. We know Harry Potter fans are eagerly anticipating seeing the final chapters unfold onscreen. In fact, the good news for them is that the gap will now be shortened between ‘Half-Blood Prince’ and the first part of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’”
Commenting on the release date change for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” David Heyman, the producer of all the Harry Potter films, offered, “When Jeff Robinov explained the rationale behind moving the release date of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ to July 2009, it was immediately apparent that this offered us the potential to reach the widest possible audience. I am extremely proud of this latest film and of the work of David Yates and our incomparable cast; I believe we have developed and pushed the series further still. We are all looking forward to sharing it with Harry Potter fans around the world, even if we have to wait just a bit longer.”
David Yates, the director of both “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and who will also helm “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” added, “It has been a joy to work on ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.’ Dan, Rupert and Emma and all our returning young cast continue to blossom, and our new cast members bring fresh color and life to Hogwarts. Even as we put the finishing touches on this latest film, we are already beginning preparations on the final two films—we start filming in February—and I am excited to bring this remarkable series to the exciting and moving conclusion its loyal fans deserve.”
In “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Heyday Films production, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” David Yates, who directed last year’s summer blockbuster “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” returns to direct “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” David Heyman and David Barron are the producers, with Lionel Wigram serving as executive producer. Steve Kloves wrote the screenplay, based on the book by J.K. Rowling.
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are reprising their roles as young wizards Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The film also stars Jim Broadbent, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Timothy Spall, David Thewlis and Julie Walters. The cast also features David Bradley, Jessie Cave, Frank Dillane, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, Helen McCrory, Natalia Tena, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Bonnie Wright.
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I think this has a lot to do with the Dark Night success. They know they won't be able to sell as many tickets so they're moving to 2009. However, they could still release it in February. HP movies are so much better when it's cold outside.
They did this for money, they said so themselves. *astards. *sulking majorly* GRRR.

i would curse, but it's not allowed in the comments on mugglenet
I can't believe it!!!! Maybe they are thinking that it's too much competition with Twilight and Dark knight coming out so close...this is making me want to stop being a harry potter fan. .. but I love harry potter so much. they probably messed something up in the movie. well since us fans have to wait so long just for the movie, it better be good. First the trailer is out late by hella months. then WB doesn't release any clips or pictures other than the trailer. Lastly, they perspone (however you spell it) the movie for another year later. omg. I at least wanted to be in high school when this movie comes out but now I'm going to be in college. :..[ Kinda funny that I first started being a fan when i was 8 years old and in fourth grade and now I'm 16, a junior. At least with the twilight series, we don't have to wait forever until our hearts burst out and people stop loving harry potter. sorry I'm just a bit disappointed. Now I have nothing to look forward to this year except twilight. twilight is going to be good though, it's just that i was expecting to dress up in my harry potter t shirts and scarf and my book and go to the movies to wait in line for three hours and then finally get let in on the first day it comes out and have a good seat with my pizza and icecream and candies and my tissues for my tears. . . hmmm... shouldn't have said that last part. hahaha. BTW, I don't think that petitions will change WB's mind. they aren't gonna change the date and I know that for sure. It was a decision well thought out and already sent in the media, no way they are going to take it back now.
i have to say that Andrew's video made me laugh after this terrible incident. Look on the brightside guys we still....theres....what about...wait theres nothing to look forward to...:P
It's marketing by WB in order to get as much of the spot light for the movie that it can. Why do I say that? Because the "Twilight" movie is going to be released around the same time (some places say Nov. 12th others say Dec. 12th) but either way, it's competition for HBP - REGARDLESS what any of us say here, the Twilight series HAS gotten huge. WB knows this, they aren't stupid, they see the chaos that ensued a couple of weeks ago with the release of the last book in the Twilight series. They don't want their movie on HBP to compete with Twilight's first movie. Way around that - release the movie 8 months afterward. End of story. The greatest of dark human emotions - greed. And no, they (WB) really don't care what we think about this latest decision.
i haven't seen any post gather comments so fast since last year when the last book came out right before the movie. and this really sucks.
this is soo stupid i like proably all of you has made plans for a midnight showing of this movie. im soo pissed right now. IT HAS TO BE A JOKE!! pray that there is an update saying this is false.

I'm still waiting for MN to post 'April fools'!! :(
Harry Potter and the Deathly Heaven's Gate! Someone with stroke saw the final cut (maybe JKR) and had a fit. HPB probably needs a major reshooting and a total re-editing. Hopefully, Yates will get the boot on Deathly Hallows and good riddance. I sat though Order of the Phoenix wondering how my contacts got so dirty and asking why the director was in such a rush to get me out of the theater. I saw the teaser for HBP and thought: here we go again.
*Raises eyebrows* Yes, we are all very disappointed with Warner Brothers, and we are all very upset at this news. But what upsets me even more is seeing so many uses of veiled profanity, and non-veiled profanity, on a site that is visited by young children, and should be family-friendly. Come on people. Your language is crass and rude. There is a better way to express yourself. Don't write something you'll regret.
argh! I'm just so mad right now! They're done filming right?? They've given us the teaser trailer! and now they're doing this to us? I would have been ok if they delayed it 'til december or something..but JULY?! I'm so pissed off! And they dare to say that "In fact, the good news for them is that the gap will now be shortened between ‘Half-Blood Prince’ and the first part of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’”" That's not good news! Yes, we are waiting for the two last movies, but we can handle the waiting because you havn't finished filming it! It only makes matters worse because you, W.B., have released the teaser trailer and many many photo's! COME ON! SAY THAT THIS IS A JOKE!
hopefully they will do a countdown for tales of beedle the bard. i dont think the petitions will change WB's mind:they were prepared for this. i think if you are mad at WB than you whould sign a petition saying "i hate WB" becuz that will at least make them feel bad about releasing FALSE INFORMATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe this has happened! For a second I thought it was April Fools Day. I can't believe they'd dare to delay a HP movie for SO long when SO many millions of fanatics are anticipating it's release! This SUCKS! It was due out in December in Australia and I already had two viewings completely planned (including a trip to the other side of the country to see it at IMAX). GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! I wish I could say that I'd boycott the movie ... but there's no way I'm going to miss out on seeing it no matter how p*ssed off I am. Everyone please go and sign the petition. It probably won't make any difference, but at least they'll know how angry they've made all the fans.
Hahaha...that youtube clip!! You guys definetly eased by pain =].
