WB responds (a bit) to HBP delay: "We Love Our Fans"
The LA Times has a new article up highlighting how upset fans are at Warner Brother's decision to push back the release of Half-Blood Prince to July 17th, 2009. They spoke with WB president Alan Horn (pictured left) about the matter, who tried to come up with more reasoning:Warner currently is riding high with "The Dark Knight," the Batman film that also stars Bale. The grim super-hero movie has taken in $452 million in the U.S. since its July 18 release, making it the second-highest grossing film ever.
To some degree, that success motivated Warner to shift "Half-Blood Prince," Horn said. The film will now hit theaters the same midsummer weekend that "Dark Knight" was released this year. Horn said the young, core Potter audience would be out of school and give the film a longer theatrical life. It will now open opposite Universal's special-effects comedy "Land of the Lost," which stars Will Ferrell. But Horn said there was nothing next year compared to this summer's especially dense slate of big-budget releases.
The article wrapped up with this quote from Horn: "We would never do anything to hurt one of the movies or the series. We love our fans."

That is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous! He basically just said, "Oh, the Dark Knight earned so much money on this one weekend, so let's release Harry Potter on that weekend so we can hope to earn as much." They have ruined the Harry Potter tradition that has gone on for five movies now-- July then November then July releases. Why? All because they are GREEDY! They know they can do whatever they want, and here they have shown exactly that. I'm e-mailing the bloody bastard and giving him a piece of my mind. I'm also boycotting the film. I won't go see it on opening night. The films are getting worse anyway, and they have nothing on the book--so forget it! You can keep your stinking movie, WB.
I am so disappointed in Warner Brothers for their decision to hold the movie back longer. What in the world does The Dark Knight have to do with this movie?????? And kids in school???? HELLLOOOO!!! Someone obviously does not know harry potter fans and has greatly underestimated us. This is all about them making more money not about what is good for the audience. Is there a petition?! We were down to litterally a couple of months before the movie came out. Now you have to push back movie 7 as well!!! I mean come on WB Have more faith in HP fans you KNOW you would make a ton of money on this movie regardless of when it comes out.
This is what WB is really saying " F*&K YOU HP FANS!!. Money is way more important than you." This is what I say, "Twilight is now my new favorite. I will go in December and see this film and take my daughter and all her friends with me to see it. If it's as good as I think it will be we will go and see it more than once. In July, I will not be going to see HBP. I will obtain a bootleg version on the net. You will get none of my money. Besides it's mostly Harry, Ron and Ginny in this one. Hardly any of Hermione so I don't think I'll be missing much. So F@*K you WB you can go and F*!K yourself for all I care." HBP and GoF were my least favorites of all the books anyways. I mean look at the major scenes from the book that will be cut from the film anyways. WB s.u.c.k.s. Wow I feel so much better now that I've put this down into words. :) Have a nice day.
I'm so FRUSTRATED ! My summer vacation is almost finished and school will begin soon. I can't believe I will have to wait next summer 2009 to watch this movie...after another long year of school !! GRRRRR !
I am absolutely gutted! I have written a feedback comment on WB's website, I have commented on the BBC website about this, I want to know if there is also a petition because this is just disgraceful behaviour on their part! Its alright for him HES SEEN IT!!!! why not RUB OUR FACES IN IT!!! They are treating us abominably and I want justice! Anything with WB on it for the next 9 months can go whistle which means I won't get to see Dark knight but at the moment I really do NOT care!! Theres got to be something we can to to make as much noise as possible!
I will not be going to see any Warner Bros movies until this issue is dealt with. If Harry Potter Fans unite world wide and boycott WB movies they will have no choice but to listen to us.
aww.. well isn't that just.. the biggest load of BS i've ever heard! We love our fans? More like we made a crappy movie and we don't want to release it until we think we can make the most money off of it! Wow this is so incredibly irritating! I don't think WB realizes the mistake they've just made. They've pissed off a HUGE fanbase. I mean they've been promising the release to be November 21st which was like less than a 100 days away, now they suddenly decide they need a whole nother year? This is just so unheard of! I mean July 2009? Something must have gone terribly wrong to push it back THAT far. Well, whatever it is, they darn well better fix it! They won't even give a straight answer as to why they made this drastic decision! First it was due to the writers' strike and now they're supposedly thinking of the fans or whatever. Oh that is just such a lie. Something went wrong and they should at least admit it!
WB...You love us, huh? Well, the last time I checked when you love and appreciate someone you don't knife them in the heart like this. I love the books and want to see the movie, but I can't and won't give WB my money now!
I dont have a clue as to what The Dark Knight has to do with Harry Potter. Both movies have very different fans. I certainly dont agree with waiting to bring this movie out. I am a HUGE HP fan, and i cant understand how even JK can go along with this and upset her fans this badly. Sadly we can make all the noise and complaints we want but it wont change their mind....they see dollar signs as most will go see it anyways. This is just as bad as them splitting up HP 7....very disappointing and i will not be going to anymore HP movies.
THEY MOVED THE TWILIGHT RELEASE DATE UP TO NOVEMBER 21ST WHERE HBP SHOULD BE! OMG its like it's official now. *cries*
THEY MOVED THE TWILIGHT RELEASE DATE UP TO NOVEMBER 21ST WHERE HBP SHOULD BE! OMG its like it's official now. *cries*
CALLING ALL HARRY POTTER FANS OF ALL AGES: BOYCOTT WARNER BROTHERS MOVIES ONLINE PETITIONS WILL NOT HELP AS MUCH AS REFUSING TO GIVE THEM ANOTHER DIME OF OUR MONEY UNTIL THEY REVISIT THEIR DECISION!!! SPREAD THE WORD TO ALL HP FANS: BOYCOTT WARNER BROTHERS!!!
no kidding; some way to show us how much you love us. we were prepared to wait a year and a half for the movie (since the last one), but now it'll be a larger than two-year gap between the movies! i mean come on. seriously. they don't give a darn about us, they just want to make as much money as possible. as IF they weren't going to make millions with it coming out in november.. greedy.
We need to speak out as much as possible. This guy is a moron and David Heyman was a fool. They have just endangered the series they so care about. I will not go to this movie I have sent emails to WB and they sent me a survey to get 15% off their online videos. They are unbelievable. We need to boycott Twilight.. and any other movie WB makes.
AHEM!!! best way to hurt them?? BOYCOTT THEIR MOVIES! HIT THEM WHERE IT HURTS. I'VE ALREADY POSTED ON myspace.com a call to boycott them for this. if every harry potter fan joins in we will get their attention
I totally agree hermie1958! Boycott all WB movies!!!!!
the truth is, good movies make lots of money. the highest grossing Potter films are the ones that are the best made regardless of when they are released...massive ticket sales are the result of more people and more repeat comers. Batman is doing so well because it is a great great movie with a compelling backstory (RIP Heath Ledger). Everyone, don't go see it, wait for the DVD and have one person buy it and burn it for everyone you know.
i am NOT A WARNER BROTHERS FAN i am a HARRY POTTER FAN, theres a huge differnce.
SPREAD THE WORD: BOYCOTT WARNER BROTHERS!! ROFL IF HARRY CAN DO WHAT HE DID WE CAN TAKE ON WARNER BROTHERS BY REFUSING TO GIVE THEM MORE OF OUR MONEY! BOYCOTT WARNER BROTHERS
Well, I haven't read all 450+ posts, so this may have already been mentioned. The reason "Dark Knight" had such a huge opening (even though it has been critically acclaimed) in July was due, in large part, to the Heath Ledger factor. I didn't have a real interest in the movie, but did feel like this would be my last opportunity to see his work on the "big screen". Saying that HBP would likely have a greater opening in July (than November as planned) based on the "Dark Knight" results is ludicrous...like comparing apples to oranges. TOTALLY different situation (and "Dark Night" was NOT a "family tent pole release"). Yes, children are out of school in the summer, but they are also out of school a lot around Thanksgiving and Christmas! Everyone who has said this is a money decision is right ON THE MONEY. I don't believe for a minute that the movie's quality would be compromised if it were released in November (because of the writer's strike issue)...it was essentially "in the can", wasn't it? Very disappointing!
WB, That is great that you love the fans and all, but can you prove that you love the fans. SHOW DON'T TELL AND ACTIONS, SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS!!!
Hey, it was good watching your movies on the big screen, WB. Thanks for revealing your true colors. I'm afraid that I'll now have to simply watch them online, because you're not getting another dime from me until you switch back the release date. Until then: kiss my ass, Warner Brothers.
WB has shown their true colors all they care about is money. We care about the fans my white butt you care. All corporate companies care about is money. We are just lambs to the slaughter to them. Thanks a lot wb for ruining my november. I hope you burn in hell mr horn.
Why can't this just be a nightmare! Somebody wake me up! Please! Ugh! I freakin hate WB!!!!
fudge YOU MR HORN. YOU BETRAYED ALL YOUR LOYAL HP FANS.
They love their fans? Then release it on time. Making people wait will only make people not want to see it at all. The film is done, it is ready to roll, play it. Leaking it to IMAX before it goes to theaters will drop sales as well. Sounds like to me they know nothing of sales or movie releases. Though if it were me, I will only do the teaser and them release it a day early Batman was good, but it wont sell forever.
Did anyone hear that they moved the release of Twilight to the HBP's former release date?!?!
so basically they just want to make more money!!!! ughghghgugghg
SPREAD THE WORD: BOYCOTT WARNER BROTHERS!! ROFL IF HARRY CAN DO WHAT HE DID WE CAN TAKE ON WARNER BROTHERS BY REFUSING TO GIVE THEM MORE OF OUR MONEY! BOYCOTT WARNER BROTHERS --------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- --------------- Yes!! listen to arwyn!! I SUPPORT YOU ARWYN!! I'LL BOYCOTT WARNER BROTHERS!!
Wanna get back at the WB !!!! Watch the youtube video !!! And join the rest of us !!!!!!!! Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=SoznaQhUpbM
apparently, the Twilight movie,I believe has taken the original spot that Harry Potter had in November..so those fans can see their movie 3 weeks earlier..but WE have to wait 11 months? How is that fair?
So, today is the obviously the worst day of the summer for us Potter fans. Even worse than the wait for the HBP teaser trailer, which I have to say for me, was worth the wait ! Today, is also the day the WB sunk lower than low. Today, Warner Brothers has basically called us a bunch of Idiots to our faces !!! They have basically said we are such stupid fangirls/fanboys that we will flock to a movie no matter when then decide to release it . They've said we'll move HBP back to JULY,so our already billion dollar company can make even more money. And OH! This will work because you know those kids that love the series, the characters, the plot, and the author whole- heartdly will come no matter when its released !!!! (And Ive even heard from a friend, there doing this to make room for the Dark Knight so it can continue to earn the big bucks, through November and maybe earn more than Titanic, but thats just a rumor !) To me, this is UNFORGIVEABLE !!!!!!!!!!
The movie is done, finished, post production has been completed as scheduled. Thats what makes this even more annoying... the movie is COMPLETELY done, yet their sitting on it for 9 months. They're not editing it, fixing it, buffing it up, nothing. The movie they have now is the same thing we"ll be watching nearly a year from now. That is most disturbing part !! So because of blatant attempt by WB to make us look like fools,I purpose we as fans show the WB we are not pushovers and hit them where it hurts !!! The box office !!!!I will sign these petition floating around, even though we all know from years of experience this will go nowhere. So I say we dont see the movie !!! Before you turn a deaf ear!!! Please hear me out !!!!! Because I know all of us as Potter fans will still go and see the movie , but I purpose not one fan but a ticket for opening night of the movie !!!!! We Have, i believe 355 more days whats one more ???? That means no midnight releases and NO FRIDAY SHOWS AT ALL !!!!! Because if you think about it opening night is one of the most important nights of opening weekend !!! We would be proving a point to the WB that we, the fans and customer, should have a say in the movies !!!!
there just gonna lose some fans that dont read the books cuz there was no cliff hanger but with dumble dore dieing and that big battle that would have held there attention for a year! but now they screwed themselves not only r they loseing fans there getting hell from us and they missed the oprotunity to make the sixth a cliff hanger greta job1!
The way to get what you want in this situation is to not send a bunch of emails, letters, or make a bunch of phone calls that are profanity laced. That just makes HP fans look immature in general. The way to get things done is to voice your complaints in well thought out, reasonable terms. Seriously, no one is going to read a letter that starts with "Dear a******s". But if you write in a calm, collected manner about your dissapointment, they might actually go past the salutation. The other thing that needs to be done is to stick to your guns. Don't gripe now about them changing the release date, but still go on opening weekend come July. Don't complain about how you hate them now and go see The Dark Knight in 24 hours. Boycotts only work if people stick to them, not forget them because you REALLY want to see the movie opeing weekend. So if you say you are not going to the movie, don't go. If you say you aren't going opening weekend or week, don't go. Their money comes from our wallets. If we don't go and spend our money on their product, they're going to finally realize what a huge mistake they made. It only works if we do what we are threatening to do. Money talks. Make them listen. Go see another movie that weekend so HP doesn't get the top slot. A list of WB movies coming out between now and July 2009 (for those of you wanting to boycott WB entirely): Star Wars: the Clone Wars, Nights in Rodanthe, RocknRolla, Body of Lies, Changeling, Four Christmases, Ninja Assassin, 17 Again, Watchmen, This Side of the Truth, Observe and Report, Whiteout, Terminator Salvation: the Future Begins. More to come, I'm sure.
"Warner currently is riding high with "The Dark Knight,"...." WB should then decide to only produce movies and release them in the summer.. Apparently they can only market for 1 season in the year. That's Talent!!! I mean g'eez WB this is the real world not $$$ Summer camp for spoiled rich movie execs... Dark Knight was a success because it was a follow up on a great movie, and it was released when it was supposed to....even though a great actor died, nothing was pushed back.. no marketing issues..etc.etc.. Dela ying to make yourself rich is not respected by fans.. sorry.. In WB's HP... Harry dies by the Greedy movie execs.... L2 "Tell the Truth!" WB. We see through your parseltongue. If the movie isn't ready tell us already. Next time stick to TV.. let the real studios take the big-boy's jobs.
This is a ploy all about trying to make the buck...heck...come on now...this is not DARK KNIGHT this is HARRY POTTER...geeze...they aren't here to please anyone except their own pockets..
They don't love their fans or they wouldn't do this...they are a crock of crap!!!
okay guys i posted a few posts back... this unite idea is great and i think we should unite to watch it a week later. Just so they wont break records for opening night and etc... i am not going to miss watching it in the cinemas for some of you who are suggesting to wait til it comes out on DVD... I AM WATCHING THIS IN IMAX 3D but instead of watching it atleast twice which i usually did with the other movies... i will only be content with watching it once... it's not like the movies are as complex as the books that i'll need to watch them twice to 'get it'... i just watch i twice to make the movies break records and to enjoy being part of the fandom... but this fan will enjoy watching it a week later with the other fans... WE MUST DO THIS TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING TO THE LAST TWO MOVIES.. TO SHOW THEM HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO LISTEN TO THE FANS. I am becoming less an less of a fan... I am feeling fooled.
This is what I wrote to WB: Dear Warner Bros. I am a 54 year old mom from Minnesota. I am also a huge fan of "Harry Potter" as are my kids and all of their 17 to 21 year old friends. I think you are making a HUGE mistake by postponing the movie. First of all, I think people will lose interest with that much time to wait. Secondly, I, along with everyone I know intend to follow the lead of the Mugglenet members by boycotting all WB movies. To advertise that the movie will be out in Nov. and then postpone it because of marketing advantages/more income is irritating a much larger audience than I think you may have anticipated. The FANS that you refer to in your press release are Harry Potter fans and not WB fans and have no loyalty to your company. Remember, the age range that grew up with Happy Potter are going to be the group of people that would be making WB profitable over the next 20 years. Do you really want to alienate this large audience? Waiting until July gives all of a lot of time to "seethe". I hope you change your mind on this decision.
okay, i'm still mad but the hate is rather gone... i just feel bad for this guy and his army of screwups that support him... they'll never know happiness anyway, if all they care about is money, poor people. I just gotta say, I love our fandom for sticking together when we have to... truly you guys are special.
This is SO all about about Twilight. I always thought WB was insane to have HBP premiere so close to Twilight's. Why would they want another "rival" book adaptation to steal the HBP movie's thunder within a couple of weeks of being out? Longer theatrical life, indeed... makes sense to me, BUT I too am frustrated that I have to wait. And the whole "we love our fans" BS is so laughable. Gimme a break.
WTF!!!! u know i logged on to mugglenet a bit later in the week to see lots of new news!! not this!! not something so darn ridculous!! love the fans?? bull shhh!! im beyond pissed!! i expected to see like more pix or a theatricle trailer release date so we no have a teaser trailer for a film that comes out in: 11 months and 2 days!! u think WB would have more common sense than this!! i believe GOF came out in nov. but HBP cant cuz sum ppl have skool THEY HAVE WEEKENDS!!! i wanna fight this!! have it put back or atleast sooner than this!! >='[
I'm so pissed off about WB doing this, July 17th?? really how stupid are they! they've already made us wait a year for it, now they're goin for 2! they should no that us fans would go see HP if it were to come out in Nov. Why wouldnt we? seriously? Ohh thats right, they're just worried about cash'n in on us! Do they really need anymore money! Thats all this is about is effin money! Its redicilous! and Fucked up. How are they going to release the trailers, & new pics from the movie, but then put it on the back burner until like a year from now??! No i'm more the pissed off about this, im boycotting watching HP when it comes out in thearters if it comes out in July 17th 2009. i'm gonna find petitions, and make more of them, i'm going to write to WB's head people. I'm going to cause a huge commotion. I'm going to do anything in my will power to try and stop this. They should no punish us. If they stay with the release date of July17,09 then im Boycotting from seeing ANY WB movies in the thearters from here on out. You guys will hear from me again. I am not going to just sit here, and do nothing, while they tease us with HP stuff, and no release. FU WB! you DO NOT love your fans, look at what your doing to us. You've achived in royally PISSING US OFF.
http://www.hbpnojuly.blog spot.com/
lol.. lets just 'swede' it (from Be Kind Rewind) in 90 days, release it on Nov. 21st and launch it off MuggleNet :P Sorry back to seriousness..
BOYCOTT WARNER BROTHERS!!! IF WE AS HARRY POTTER FANS STICK TOGETHER THEN THEY WILL HAVE NO CHOICE!!! DON'T GIVE WARNER BROTHERS ANOTHER DIME UNTIL THEY REVISIT THEIR DECISION!! BOYCOTT WB!!
"We love our fans." Hahaha. That's a good one.
they don't love us, they love fat wallets.
GIVE [Warner Bros] HELL FOR US PEEVES!!!!!!! Because they seriously deserve it. The move itself is not the worst part. The worst part is that there motivations are so clearly money related. They basically said 'Dark Knight made lots of money then, harry potter will too!' its such a huge decision and it was made in such a nonchalant way it is truly shocking and cruel.
