WB responds (a bit) to HBP delay: "We Love Our Fans"
The LA Times has a new article up highlighting how upset fans are at Warner Brother's decision to push back the release of Half-Blood Prince to July 17th, 2009. They spoke with WB president Alan Horn (pictured left) about the matter, who tried to come up with more reasoning:Warner currently is riding high with "The Dark Knight," the Batman film that also stars Bale. The grim super-hero movie has taken in $452 million in the U.S. since its July 18 release, making it the second-highest grossing film ever.
To some degree, that success motivated Warner to shift "Half-Blood Prince," Horn said. The film will now hit theaters the same midsummer weekend that "Dark Knight" was released this year. Horn said the young, core Potter audience would be out of school and give the film a longer theatrical life. It will now open opposite Universal's special-effects comedy "Land of the Lost," which stars Will Ferrell. But Horn said there was nothing next year compared to this summer's especially dense slate of big-budget releases.
The article wrapped up with this quote from Horn: "We would never do anything to hurt one of the movies or the series. We love our fans."

No matter what they say, WB cares nothing about the fans. I mean really, if they did, they'd keep it for November. Plus they wouldn't be thinking entirely about money, which was clearing the President of WB's excuse.
I can't beleive they said "we would never do anything to upset our fans". Well, I'm upset!
Once again I'll state how their blatant money grubbing just sickens me! And it really, really burns me how he tacked on that "we love the fans" placating line at the end. I can almost feel the patronizing pat on the head that surely accompanies that crap. You sir, love money. It is the only consideration for this and you can barely conceal your greedy grin when you try to address the outraged fans. The worst part is that we won't boycott WB because we can't resist seeing the movie!!!! And they know it! That only enboldens them to do whatever the hell they want as long as it means more money to them. Love the fans? Ha!! More like "screw the fans, we can do what we want"!!!

Dear Mr. Horn; Clearly you do not "love your fans" as you claim. You love only their money. Not the person they are or they love of the Harry Potter series..but the bills and the coins that they fork out to pay you with each and every visit to the theatre. If you loved your fans, you wouldn't make them wait for a movie that they were promised to see in November, only to then rip it from them three months before release. Harry Potter fans unfortunately will go and see your movie and you'll still get your money to buy your mansions and parties. And the hard working people who just want to spend a night at the theatre immersed in a story that they love will wait, I just hope that they don't wait patiently. To me, this is just more proof that the decision to break Deathly Hallows into two movies instead of one was for the same reason.....money!

Could it be that one of the reasons Dark Knight did so well is because of Heath Ledger's passing? And that people really enjoyed the movie? I don't think the release date in July had as much a part in bringing the money as WB thinks it did... MHO.
Hopefully if we all keep emailing and calling the WB about this, as well as signing the petitions in sheer numbers, they'll change their tune. Keep up the push to get the movie back to when it's supposed to be released, November 21!

This truly sucks. Greed wins again. The exec's know nothing of the HP fan base. It doesn't matter when the film is released the fans will line up and spend millions no matter what. They are simply sandbagging profits to ensure returns to their shareholders in 09. The US economy sucks and they are putting money in the bank for 09.

I had planned on seeing it anyway, so his death had no bearing on it, but for the casual fan I'm sure it did. The July release date had NOTHING to do with how well this movie did. And it won't have a bearing on HBP, either.
