The LA Times has a new article up highlighting how upset fans are at Warner Brother's decision to push back the release of Half-Blood Prince to July 17th, 2009. They spoke with WB president Alan Horn (pictured left) about the matter, who tried to come up with more reasoning:
Warner currently is riding high with "The Dark Knight," the Batman film that also stars Bale. The grim super-hero movie has taken in $452 million in the U.S. since its July 18 release, making it the second-highest grossing film ever.
To some degree, that success motivated Warner to shift "Half-Blood Prince," Horn said. The film will now hit theaters the same midsummer weekend that "Dark Knight" was released this year. Horn said the young, core Potter audience would be out of school and give the film a longer theatrical life. It will now open opposite Universal's special-effects comedy "Land of the Lost," which stars Will Ferrell. But Horn said there was nothing next year compared to this summer's especially dense slate of big-budget releases.
The article wrapped up with this quote from Horn: "We would never do anything to hurt one of the movies or the series. We love our fans."

Out of all the choices that they have made for HP, this is the worst one.
HBP would make the same amount of money if it was released at any freaking day of the year.
I really hate WB (even thought Dark Knight was fantastic).
Why cant Harry Potter be made with New Line Cinema (LOTR) or Disney (Narnia). I have enjoyed the films immensely. They are well done and they win award of honour like Oscars and SAG awards and not Peoples Choice and Nickelodeon Blimps. Even HP film becomes a disappointment to all of its fans. I mean, OotP just sucked. I wanted more, I tell, you MORE! Finally when I give in and say "By the looks of it, HBP looks like it can beat the other five (My order goes PoA, GoF, OotP, CoS. PS/SS), WB delays the release. If WB Loves their fans, they should have done justice to the books a LONG time ago with giving us a freaking three hour movie for each film like LOTR and Narnia have with Extended Editions of each film and more bonus material. I mean, what WB gives us is just pure crap!
I am disgusted. I would Boycot WB if I didnt love HP so much.

Clearly you do not "love your fans" as you claim. You love only their money. Not the person they are or they love of the Harry Potter series..but the bills and the coins that they fork out to pay you with each and every visit to the theatre.
If you loved your fans, you wouldnt make them wait for a movie that they were promised to see in November, only to then rip it from them three months before release.
Harry Potter fans unfortunately will go and see your movie and youll still get your money to buy your mansions and parties. And the hard working people who just want to spend a night at the theatre immersed in a story that they love will wait, I just hope that they dont wait patiently.
To me, this is just more proof that the decision to break Deathly Hallows into two movies instead of one was for the same reason.....money!

I have no doubt that Heath Ledgers passing helped The Dark Knight. I had planned on seeing it anyway, so his death had no bearing on it, but for the casual fan Im sure it did. The July release date had NOTHING to do with how well this movie did. And it wont have a bearing on HBP, either.

Due to WBs incredibly stupid, insensitive and greed-driven decision to push back the release date of HBP, I have decided to boycott the movie, in a way. I hereby "solemnly swear" to pay for the stupidest, NON-WB, crap-fest of a movie playing next July, and then sneak into a HBP theater. WB will not recieve a penny from me.

In case they didnt notice, they are hurting everyone now!! The fans, the series itself... If they released it in november, kids would be out of school for thanksgiving!!! Most schools have vacation time around the xmas holidays too, plus time in feb. or march. And easter vacation! There are plenty of options to take if theyre worried about kids being in school!!!!! The writers strike in no way could have effected them at all. Its a freakin book, so all the writers do is shrink the story so its 2 hours or so, and add in a few cheesy lines to attact the teens. They love the fans money!!! Dont believe this bs theyre giving us.

Its obvious they are just trying to make more money, the Harry Potter Series has been keeping WB afloat for years now, and they are scared to release them too early and loose the goose of the golden eggs. No, WB, you DO NOT love your fans. You only care about the money. If you loved your fans, who buy movie tickets that pay YOUR salary, then you would not delay the release of HBP until July of next year.
WB is not going to respond to emotional pleas from the fans. Since WB was honest enough to admit that its all about the money, then hit them where it hurts. Dont go see any WB movies in the theatres. Dont buy the DVDs. If you want to watch a WB movie, get it from your local library, where you dont pay anything for it.
And, Ill say it again, were all still going to watch HBP when it is released, including me. Just DO NOT GO DURING OPENING WEEKEND. The theaters have to pay the largest percentage of ticket sales to the movie studio during opening weekend, and that percentage decreases with every subsequent week. The longer you wait to see the movie, the less money the theaters have to pay to the movie studio. Were not going to be able to change the release date for HBP. But, if we boycott opening weekend, WB might think twice if they want to decide to delay the release of DH in the future.

I cant believe they chose to respond to this backlash with yet more talk of this being a business decison, yes, that it what there about but there insane if they think Potter 6 is going to do anything remotely what TDK did. First off, it just doesnt have all the diciding elements. Secondly just because other studios dont have the blockbusters doesnt mean people will go see this. Off the top of my head, I can think of T4, Transformers 2, Watchmen, Wolverine, and the new Star Trek movie, add Potter and you have a typical summer of blockbusters, this move takes away 300 mil from 2008 and just adds 300 mil to 2009, I dont get why it matters, and I hope someone gets fired when they find out the pissed off enough fans on top of the movie making about what it usually does, OotP was a fluke in terms of blockbuster, it made 2 mil more then Gobet but it didnt sell more tickets, the giant core of a Potter movie comes from the Potter fans, and it doesnt matter when the movie is released. And I cant believe how many fans actually thought the DH being spilt into two was for the fans to get the best possible story, for those niaeve enough to believe that in the first place, here is the evidence it was ony done to put 300 mil of our money into there greedy bosses hands.

The only reason why Dark Knight did as well as it did was because of Heath Ledger. NOT because it was in the summer. Did it not occur to W.B. in their greed induced delirium that the reason people went to see Dark Knight en masse was because it was an excellent film? And think about it, people! I know the vast majority of you hate the Order of the Phoenix film, but the reviews for it were (generally) much better than for the first four! Why did we all go to see it? Because the reviews were great. And as far as Dark Knight goes, Heath Ledger died at the end of this film. He was said to have gotten very dark due to his performance. Who wouldnt want to see that? Despite being erroneous, people were chanting that it was the film that killed Ledger! Everyone was nuts to see it, and it delivered pretty darn well. I know well end up giving W.B. what they want- more money. But I wish that we could, as a group, boycott the film. Dont give them what they want, stay away from theatres. If we can wait until July of 09 for the movie, cant we wait a couple months longer to rent or buy the DVD? And you all know very well that despite W.B.s claim that it wont have an effect on the last two films, I think we can be very sure it will. So lets wait even longer, boycott the darned film.

Its not even about making more money in the summer as they say! What they really mean is this: The Dark Knight made them so much money THIS year.. they want to push HBP next year to make more money in the next fiscal year since they dont have a blockbuster lined up and next years gross will look "pitiful" compared to this years after Dark Knight and Harry Potter in the same year. But it is disgraceful that they would do this a mere THREE months before the release date... when people have planned things around it and anticipating it for already over a year. What I think is even more disgraceful is that they no doubt were toying with the idea for a while, hence the lack of major advertisements, a late teaser trailer, etc. and were just waiting to see how much Dark Knight would bring in before pulling the plug on Potter. So them wanting to wait ill next year is one thing, but pushing it ALL the way back to July... thats another!!! Why not sooner! They claim cause the market is better for the younger fans in the Summer but guess what... if they did their research right.. most of the die hard Harry Potter fans are in their teens, 20s, and even 30s as the first book itself came out in what 1997ish? That means if you were 10 when you read it.. then you would be in your 20s now! So WB is just alienating their main marketing demographic cause we will see it anytime regardless of time place but we dont want to wait another whole year practically!! It is outrageous! Why sit on a COMPLETED film for 11 months and risk it getting pirated just to boost your earnings for the next fiscal year... way to go WB... you managed to miss off thousands of people in a matter of moments and if you really loved your fans... you would have thought about letting us down sooner and being honest all along then throwing this at us a mere three months before the release. way to go...

Horns move makes no sense. Because The Dark Knight is so successful, hes going to space out the next Harry Potter movie because its a guaranteed success? Hes worried that hell have a strong fiscal 2008 but fall short in 2009. Maybe a smart move for WBs stockholders but without loyal audiences, Warner Brothers wouldnt have anything to give their stockholders. Horn and Warner Brothers should focus on making better films instead of manipulating the numbers and manipulating their audiences/customers in the process. If I knew there was a chance that my seeing the latest Batman movie would delay the next Harry Potter film, I would have waited for Batman to come out on DVD or skipped it all together. Knowing this kind of blatent disregard for the movie goer is going to be the standard business practice for Warner Brothers will give me no option but to boycott future Warner Brother films.

It all comes down to money at the end of the day. They know Potter will bring in the money and next year they have nothing that will bring that in, so moving this film is simply for that reason. I hate the fact that they dress it up as any number of excuses. The film is finished so nothing can be added to it. Its a simple matter of more money, which is why theyre splitting the final into 2 films. I hate the Potter movies for the way they have butchered the plot, characters (especially Ron) and made it so nothing can happen without Hermione being heroic while Ron is made to look a coward. OOTP infuriated me by having Hermionie introduce Luna, not even bothering to explain how she even knows her. I almost wish the films start to bomb just so it bites WB in the backside, but theres no chance of that happening.

ok first of all its all about the benjamins....and probably tax purposes, they already have their blockbuster this year so they dont want to avoid even more taxes with more profits.
So the solution is to not go watch the movie at the theater...do not rent the movie, since this money all gets back to the studio anyway.
Do, steal this movie off the internet or by any other means necessary.
Get a group of 100 people together that would all seperately buy the movie and buy it once and burn it for everyone else....better yet, one person buy a copy burn it 10,000 times and leave it on the doorstep of everyone who lives around you.

It wont make a difference how many petitions people sign. It just adds to the publicity and WB know that people will be angry now, but come release time anticipation will be at a fever pitch based on the delay. Say one thing about WB but they know how to market their films. The Dark Knight campaigne was flawless and Heaths death only added to it. They would probably even use the peititions as hype, stating that the delay caused the "Biggest online release the film campagine" or something.

Thousands of new HP fans arent going to spring out of thin air by then. I cannot imagine anyone thinking, "Oh, I wasnt going to watch the movie in November, but now that its coming out next year, I think I will. " Duh! 2. WB cannot be as stupid as to believe that a release date has anything to do with the success of a film. As many posters have pointed out, Heath Ledger and his performance played a huge role in the success of DK, furthered by movie reviews and word-of-mouth. A stellar performance by any HP actor is hardly going to drive up ticket sales for HP movies. The fan base of the HP franchise has already been established. Something else is going on. Or theyve been confunded. In which case I hope that they walk into a wall or something.

This was a really stupid move on WBs part. Not only is the greed so obvious that even the teenyboppers can figure it out, but the WB is alienating the exact audience theyre counting on to see the film! Havent they figured it out yet? Yes, the books are phenomenal; thats obvious. But the films themselves appeal to a certain age group that is quickly outgrowing the "adoration" phase of their lives. By the time this one is released, about 25 percent of their audience will lost their infatuation for the franchise and decide for themselves that its not worth spending the money for a ticket! Note to WB: Corporate greed will come back to haunt you. Economic times are tougher now than they were in previous years. Audiences will remember this little stunt youve pulled. Suggestion: View the film, "The Big One" by Michael Moore. It explains everything about corporate greed. WB, you rank right up there with Walmart in my book!

Of course its about money. WB are a business and money is what allows them to greenlight more films in their yearly budget. It sucks but had they not actually set a release date there wouldnt even be an uproar. Maybe they expect the value of the US dollar to have recovered some by next year too.

Im upset that theyre doing this mostly for money; it seems to me that the people who are going to see Harry Potter are going to see it no matter what, so I dont think changing the date is going to get them more money anyway. But to be honest, this kind of works out better for me because I wasnt going to be able to see it at midnight or on that Friday on a school night and on a football game day :(. But he was hopeful a Royal premiere would still go ahead this year.

Well, Im certainly in agreement with everyone else here. What makes me even angrier is that they attempted to place blame on the previous writers strike, which is totally out of line as the film is now in post-production. Its extremely obvious that this is just WBs excuse to have a "Dark Knight"-type film for next summer. The dont even have the decency to release it on a different week than "Dark Knight"! Sheesh. And whats even more ridiculous; they didnt even bother to inform their OWN various branches about this change until, like, today. So theres still misinformation being printed that the film is coming out in November. Bets are the trailer attached to "Clone Wars" today still touts the November release! Psh. Like they said, theyre doing it because they think itll make more money if its released during the summer. We need to make sure that doesnt happen. Its gonna take a lot of willpower, but I think Ill make sure NOT to see it in the theater. We should all do that. If we can wait the 8 months were being forced unwillingly to wait, we can wait an extra 4 months til its released on DVD. You know the 7th movie isnt gonna be released when they said (december 09, right?)... I hope they dont make much money on it. Selfish greedy bastards.

I think Alan Horn is full of BS!! If WB truly LOVED the fans, they would have taken our opinion into account, but they arent doing that nor do I see them ever doing that. All they care about is money. Do they honestly think that HBP is gonna do as well as Dark Knight?? When has ANY HP movie done that well???? And what they arent taking into account is the non-readers. There are a LOT of non-readers that go to the movies. Their interest in the movies are probably going to go down because there hasnt been anything new within two years. And the fact that the gap between HBP and DH being shorter is crap because the gap between those two was shorter when HBP was going to be released in November than the gap now between OotP and HBP. These are factors that WB is NOT taking into account, and those two could possibly affect the box office success of HBP, since thats clearly all they care about....

how sad that the people who think imax is still releasing in november are incorrect. i wouldnt mind so much if that were the case as we always see it first in imax.. but its been pushed back to july also from everything im reading, including the statement from imax.. learn how to read perhaps. oh well. not really. im so so so so so so disappointed. was really looking forward to november, and july is. oh wait, almost a full year away. im getting older people, too quickly, and what if some of us get hit by a bus in february or march? jerk offs. wb sucks.

So, yesterday is the obviously the worst day of the summer for us Potter fans.
Even worse than the wait for the HBP teaser trailer, which I have to say for me, was worth the wait !
Today, is also the day the WB sunk lower than low.
Today Warner Brothers has basically called us a bunch of Idiots to our faces !!! They have basically said we are such stupid fangirls/fanboys that we will flock to a movie no matter when then decide to release.
They said well give a press release to them that basically tells ays we are movie the Harry Potter movie back til July ,so our already billion dollar company can make even more money. And OH! This will work because you know those kids that love the series, the characters, the plot, and the author whole- heartdly will come no matter when its released !!!!
(And Ive even heard from a friend, there doing this to make room for the Dark Knight so it can continue to earn the big bucks, through November and maybe earn more than Titanic, but thats just a rumor !)
To me, this is UNFORGIVEABLE !!!!!!!!!!
The movie is done, finished, post production has been completed as scheduled. Thats what makes this even more annoying... the movie is COMPLETELY done, yet their sitting on it for 9 months. Theyre not editing it, fixing it, buffing it up, nothing. The movie they have now is the same thing we"ll be watching nearly a year from now. That is most disturbing part !!
So because of blatant attempt by WB to make us look like fools,I purpose we as fans show the WB we are not pushovers and hit them where it hurts !!! The box office !!!!

I would just like to say that Alan Horn is FULL OF CRAP!!!!!! WB is in charge of distributing The Dark Knight and Harry Potter...they are the ones who decided that The Dark Knight and Harry Potter would be released the same year, and now they are going back on their decision. This is the biggest mistake they could make and they are going to realize that soon enough!!!!! Whats wrong with making almost $1 billion dollars in one year? Thats what would happen if Harry Potter was still coming out in November. Plus, Nov. 21st is during the Thanksgiving holiday when kids are out of school...sp everyone is gonna have time to see it!!!!! Holidays are always a good time to make money...they should know this. Obviously they arent smart enough for their jobs and they need someone like me to do it for them!!!!!! If you are going to make these decisions at least do it early on and stick to it - not after you have released the international dates (as well as a trailer with the Nov 21st promotion attached). I am seriously wondering what kind of decision making process is being used there.

That is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous! He basically just said, "Oh, the Dark Knight earned so much money on this one weekend, so lets release Harry Potter on that weekend so we can hope to earn as much." They have ruined the Harry Potter tradition that has gone on for five movies now-- July then November then July releases. Why? All because they are GREEDY! They know they can do whatever they want, and here they have shown exactly that. Im e-mailing the bloody bastard and giving him a piece of my mind.
Im also boycotting the film. I wont go see it on opening night. The films are getting worse anyway, and they have nothing on the book--so forget it! You can keep your stinking movie, WB.

I am so disappointed in Warner Brothers for their decision to hold the movie back longer. What in the world does The Dark Knight have to do with this movie?????? And kids in school???? HELLLOOOO!!! Someone obviously does not know harry potter fans and has greatly underestimated us. This is all about them making more money not about what is good for the audience. Is there a petition?! We were down to litterally a couple of months before the movie came out. Now you have to push back movie 7 as well!!! I mean come on WB Have more faith in HP fans you KNOW you would make a ton of money on this movie regardless of when it comes out.

I will go in December and see this film and take my daughter and all her friends with me to see it. If its as good as I think it will be we will go and see it more than once. In July, I will not be going to see HBP. I will obtain a bootleg version on the net. You will get none of my money. Besides its mostly Harry, Ron and Ginny in this one. Hardly any of Hermione so I dont think Ill be missing much. So F@*K you WB you can go and F*!K yourself for all I care." HBP and GoF were my least favorites of all the books anyways. I mean look at the major scenes from the book that will be cut from the film anyways. WB s.u.c.k.s. Wow I feel so much better now that Ive put this down into words. :) Have a nice day.

Im so FRUSTRATED ! My summer vacation is almost finished and school will begin soon. I cant believe I will have to wait next summer 2009 to watch this movie...after another long year of school !!

I am absolutely gutted! I have written a feedback comment on WBs website, I have commented on the BBC website about this, I want to know if there is also a petition because this is just disgraceful behaviour on their part! Its alright for him HES SEEN IT!!!! why not RUB OUR FACES IN IT!!! They are treating us abominably and I want justice! Anything with WB on it for the next 9 months can go whistle which means I wont get to see Dark knight but at the moment I really do NOT care!! Theres got to be something we can to to make as much noise as possible!

aww.. well isnt that just.. the biggest load of BS ive ever heard! We love our fans? More like we made a crappy movie and we dont want to release it until we think we can make the most money off of it! Wow this is so incredibly irritating! I dont think WB realizes the mistake theyve just made. Theyve pissed off a HUGE fanbase. I mean theyve been promising the release to be November 21st which was like less than a 100 days away, now they suddenly decide they need a whole nother year? This is just so unheard of! I mean July 2009? Something must have gone terribly wrong to push it back THAT far. Well, whatever it is, they darn well better fix it! They wont even give a straight answer as to why they made this drastic decision! First it was due to the writers strike and now theyre supposedly thinking of the fans or whatever. Oh that is just such a lie. Something went wrong and they should at least admit it!

I dont have a clue as to what The Dark Knight has to do with Harry Potter. Both movies have very different fans. I certainly dont agree with waiting to bring this movie out. I am a HUGE HP fan, and i cant understand how even JK can go along with this and upset her fans this badly. Sadly we can make all the noise and complaints we want but it wont change their mind....they see dollar signs as most will go see it anyways. This is just as bad as them splitting up HP 7....very disappointing and i will not be going to anymore HP movies.

no kidding; some way to show us how much you love us. we were prepared to wait a year and a half for the movie (since the last one), but now itll be a larger than two-year gap between the movies! i mean come on. seriously. they dont give a darn about us, they just want to make as much money as possible. as IF they werent going to make millions with it coming out in november.. greedy.

We need to speak out as much as possible. This guy is a moron and David Heyman was a fool. They have just endangered the series they so care about. I will not go to this movie I have sent emails to WB and they sent me a survey to get 15% off their online videos. They are unbelievable. We need to boycott Twilight.. and any other movie WB makes.
